The goal of this set is clearly indicated in the title: to highlight the voices of American Indians throughout history. Other than the preface, introduction, a “Chronology of American Indian History” from 1492 to 2000, and a brief introduction to each document, readers will find the set is made up exclusively of primary source documents. The 224 documents are organized chronologically, starting with a handful of undated creation stories and working up to the present day. The bulk of the documents come directly from the American Indian perspective. Although famous American Indians like Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull are represented, documents produced by lesser-known individuals add incredible depth to the volume, such as a letter written by Susan la Flesche Picotte, MD (the first American Indian woman to become a physician), requesting government resources to help the Omaha tribe she was serving. Among the documents written by non–American Indians are numerous captivity narratives, Jesuit missionary documents, and a host of treaties. A “Further Reading” section and an index are found in the second volume.These volumes provide a treasure trove of information for students of American Indian history. Using chronological rather than subject order—as well as a lack of guidance materials—allows the documents to speak for themselves but make the volumes appropriate for more specialized or academic collections. --Emily Compton-Dzak

Fascinating, Informative

I first consulted this collection as I was researching the lives of Tecumseh and Pushmataha (for a history paper), and the book proved invaluable for my research, with transcripts of their dueling speeches in Mississippi along with the context behind each speech. But as I was researching, I found myself procrastinating by reading through the other documents of the book, each of which tells a unique and fascinating story. I procrastinated for hours this way, with absolutely no regrets :) The editors have done an excellent job introducing each piece, and the whole collection proved to be not only a handy research tool, but also a genuine pleasure to read.
