Who is This Book For????

Confessions of a So-Called Middle Child by Maria T. Lemon brought up a bunch of questions for me. First being is the designated age grouping correct? It is labeled as a book for 8-12 year olds or grades 3-7. I think that it the subject matter covered is too mature for the average 8-10 year old. I don't feel that hacking into other people/organizations' computers is really what I would want a child to learn about. Nor, do I feel that Charlie C. Cooper's actions when she loses her best friend at school are anything I would want my grandchildren (9 and 12) exposed to.
Charlie (the main character of the book) is a 12 year old girl who, as a social worker I would say, is a troubled child. She is angry, reacts to events without really thinking of consequences, associates with other computer hackers and is more concerned about what she is wearing rather than how she is interacting with her family and others. She has been kicked out of her last school. Her family has moved to another town to give her a fresh start and yes, she is a middle child.....but that is not what this book addresses. Rather it is a journey of this girl from a troubled child to a caring person who perhaps learns what is should be important in life.
I read the whole book and wasn't bored. I was focusing on this girl journey. I am not sure that the targeted age group are really going to see that part of the story, but rather will be interested in what she designs to wear, how rude she is to adults and all the members of her family, and her actions and reactions. I really did not like this character on the whole. But occasionally I glimpsed a little girl who loved her father, who desperately wanted to have friends and who seems to be a bright, curious child.
This isn't an adult book and it really isn't a book for children under 12.....and it isn't written in a style that would draw the teen reader although that is probably the group who would understand the real meaning of the storyline.

Perfect for ages 10-12 and up

I got this for my 7th grade daughter in hopes of luring her away from the vampy vampires or sugary looovvvveee stories. This book has been compared to Harriet the Spy and I'd say that's pretty fair. I'm using it as a learning tool for our 12 year old who thinks she's so cute when she backchats a teacher or insults her friends. I think it gives a more harsh point of view but some kids don't respond to coddling. I enjoyed the book myself. The writing style is for YA but it has just enough real life situations that lead into serious discussions. The tone is light and funny in some parts, it's just really well put together story that doesn't paint all kids as pweshush snowflakes. Recommended for 10 year to young /mid teens

This is masterful writing

I'm a "shrink" (as Maria refers to us). I literally laughed out loud (seriously, I scared my dog Vinny) at how she described the shrink she visited in elementary school. Priceless!
I've written a bunch of parenting and psych. books, and I have to confess; If I could write like Maria Lennon, I'd rule the world. Or at a minimum I'd have sold WAY MORE books! I'm seriously professionally, could use some couch-time myself jealous. Maria... I don't know where you learned to write this way (genetics, warped childhood, self-medication or all of the above), but I'm way impressed. You are a funny, funny and gifted writer.
Fellow readers... if you are looking for a hysterical read with page turning power and an uplifting message -- this is the book for you. Buy it now! You will be happy you did.
