About the Author
Charles Hood’s journeys have taken him from the high Arctic to Patagonia, Easter Island, and the South Pole. He has been a dishwasher, a ski instructor, and a nature guide in Africa.
His previous books include Bombing Ploesti and Río de Dios from Red Hen Press, as well as Xopilote Cantos and The Half-Life of Salt: Voices from the Enola Gay. He has been the recipient of a Fulbright fellowship, an Artist in Residency with the Center for Land Use Interpretation, and an Artists and Writers grant from the National Science Foundation. Charles Hood teaches photography and writing at Antelope Valley College, California.

Antarctica--Not

I really, really HATED this book. I'm a working and publishing poet who has spent time in Antarctica. I had hoped for a set of beautiful poems about the austere and vast beauty of the place, the white thunder of glaciers, the spouting whales off the coast, the ice that looks easy to traverse but is scarred with strastrugi and hidden crevasses.None of this is here. The poet concentrates on more populous places--McMurdo, science stations--and is too far inland to see much of the wildlife. He doesn't capture the craziness of the scientists and support staff, either. Plus, the poems are too prosy--there is no beauty in them to match the beauty of the place. Granted, the continent is so vast and overwhelming that it makes for a tough subject, but even so this is a mediocre collection. Give it a pass and go to Antarctica yourself.
