In the second installment of Rebecca West’s Saga of the Century trilogy, Rose Aubrey, her sisters, and her cousin stand on the brink of adulthood and a new era for women
They have put down their schoolbooks and put up their hair, but a talented musician and her kin ponder what being a young woman on one’s own will entail. Abandoned by their feckless father, Rose and her family must move beyond their comfortable drawing room to discover a world of kind patrons, music teachers, and concert hall acclaim, but also domestic strife, anti-Semitism, and social pressure to marry. Set before World War I, Rebecca West’s intimate, eloquent family portrait brings to life a time when women recognized their own voices and the joys of living off one’s own talents.

Review
“The whole ghostly . . . saga project . . . bears striking witness to what an extraordinary, and extraordinarily honest, writer Rebecca West was.” —The New York Times
About the Author
Dame Rebecca West (1892–1983) is one of the most critically acclaimed English novelists, journalists, and literary critics of the twentieth century. Uniquely wide-ranging in subject matter and breathtakingly intelligent in her ability to take on the oldest and knottiest problems of human relations, West was a thoroughly entertaining public intellectual. In her eleven novels, beginning with The Return of the Soldier, she explored topics including feminism, socialism, love, betrayal, and identity. West’s prolific journalistic works include her coverage of the Nuremberg trials for the New Yorker, published as A Train of Powder, and Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, her epic study of Yugoslavia. She had a son with H.G. Wells, and later married banker Henry Maxwell Andrews, continuing to write, and publish, until she died in London at age ninety.

A Worthy Sequel to the Fountain Overflows
By S. Parry
"This Real Night" by Rebecca West is a worthy sequel to "The Fountain Overflows." It may not be the masterpiece of its predecessor, but I am glad that I read it and will definitely read the third volume, "Cousin Rosamond." Although I suppose it could stand on its own as a novel, it really is meant to be read as part of the trilogy. It has the same great literary style and penetration of the family and the society just before WWI. Some paragraphs about inconsequential matters, often food, are remarkable in the manner they reveal character, setting and even the history of the times.
I strongly recommend "This Real Night."

'I saw the life of those days as a flagon of grey glass, filled with salt water, with collected tears'
By sally tarbox
The second of West's 'Cousin Rosamund' trilogy. Written as a stand-alone novel, although even better if you read its prequel ('The Fountain overflows') first.
Continuing the lives of the Aubrey family after the disappearance of their father; Mary and Rose are now at music college; brother Richard Quin is planning to go to university; disliked elder sister Cordelia is starting a new career. But the First World War is looming...
Probably the best fiction I've ever read, West can paint with words so that you feel you're there. The account of an awkward dinner party with family friend Mr Morpurgo and his hostile wife is supreme. And I love her description of self-righteous Cordelia on the eve of her wedding:
'Her new manner...she was still meek, but her meekness was pretentious. Though she was a lamb, it was one which had got itself embroidered on a church banner.'
Exquisitely written, I can't recommend it enough.

Too much the middle book of a trilogy
By Phred
Bottom Line First
The Real Night is Volume 2 of Rebecca Wests’ Saga of the Century. Dame Rebecca West continues to demonstrate brilliant writing. She can create lyrical moods, high drama and perfectly clear short descriptions. The Aubrey girls witness a near bar fight between the owner and a criminal threat where the reader can almost taste the tension sweat in the room. Later a nanny is called upon to keep her charges from being indiscrete is described have having an expression like she had just avoided spitting. The book is somewhat less than its parts. It is short and this is a good thing a good thing. The Real Night may work as a standalone but much will not be clear absent book one. I can recommend this book as part of the trilogy, but it is my least favorite of several titles by this under remembered writer.
At the end of The Fountain Over Flows the semi-impoverished Aubry family and their cousin have survived the financial incompetence of the now absent father, achieved some security in their respective future roles as pianists and their mother has revealed her plan to insure that they none would ever again experience extreme want for lack of money.
All except the younger brother have graduated school and have moved on to advanced studies or otherwise preparing for the working world. The brother, always referred to as Richard Quin is still everyone’s darling. He is at once above all of the family issues and demands and a possessor of better information about anything. He is a nearly mystical character but like all of the males in this the series not particularly deep or believable.
If Richard Quin remains eternally precocious; mother is at once too precious and oddly over matched in a world that does not depend on her cunning or her overbearing protections. Early in the book she is targeted by a debt collector. She knew the man from old when she knew the family had debts to collect. His presence in this book is an effort to scam her for money he has no right too. Several pages are spent trying to decide how much to give him without having to admit that they know he is attempting a scam.
The Fountain Overflows ends with surprising good fortune. The Real Night ends with the arrival of World War I. Death is present and heavily foretold.
