The Joshua Stone was an easy read and was filled with lots of adventure. It was total fiction but read as if it was true.

A Novel look at time travel

Most mainstream Science Fiction stories about time travel gloss over the operating system of the travel by saying it is a) connected to exceeding the speed of light or b) A function of either passing through space or time warps or c) A method currently unknown and discovered later. James Barney centers his novel on gravity as a method of moving through time. A fascinating portion of the book is dedicated to going over gravitational factors, either of size of objects or distance of one from the other causing gain or lost time without regard to the time of the world near the event.
In 1959 a government lab working on a secret experiment in West Virginia goes awry. Several government scientists working there mysteriously disappear and in spite of all efforts do not reappear. The president, Dwight Eisenhower, finally orders the lab sealed shut and any records of its existence wiped out. Moving to the present day a series of strange events occur in the region of the lab when it becomes obvious that something has been taken out of it. Two government agents, Mike Califano and Ana Thorne are ordered to investigate these happenings and what they unearth will affect the way people think about both science and religion. They find a reference to 12 stones in the biblical book of Joshua that seemingly defied gravity and do not fall when left hanging in the air. Apparently 2 of these stones have been found in the lost lab and taken by Russian interests who intend to use them for their own criminal ends.
Mike and Ana begin a wide ranging investigation centered around the lost lab, what was taken, and the intentions of the Russians with regard to use of the material . Barney's style is fast and keeps the reader glued to the pages and fixed upon the wider concept of gravity than held prior to these events. It is obvious that Mike and Ana will be used again in future novels and I look forward to reading those books once they come out. A highly recommended book concerned with a subject that is out of the ordinary.

The Bible Book of Joshua Chapter Ten tells us that while Joshua was in battle with an enemy the day was going to end. Concerned that he would lose Joshua asked God to make the sun stand still and God did. In 1959 a group of scientists in West Virginia are trying to recreate what God did with time dilation. As always something goes horribly wrong and the lab is sealed. Now present day West Virginia all sorts of odd events are happening that seem to involve time in some manner. It is into this environment that Califano and Thorne are sent. Now they have to understand what happened back then to deal with what is happening now and stop a global catastrophe. Mr. Barney has given us a wonderful thriller as the whole world is in danger History and fiction blend together as the two agents are trying the mystery. "The Joshua Stone" is loaded with twists and turns that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. Mr. Barney has provided us with a very exciting book with clever characters that I hope come back in this very talented authors next book.
