About the Author
Stephen Laws is a full-time novelist, born in Newcastle upon Tyne. Married, with three children, he lives and works in his birthplace. The author of 11 novels, numerous short stories, (collected in The Midnight Man) columnist, reviewer, film-festival interviewer, pianist and recipient of a number of awards, Stephen Laws recently wrote and starred in the short horror movie The Secret.

Good solid horror collection from Stephen Laws

Stephen Laws may not be as renowned as his contemporaries James Herbert or Graham Masterton but that is not to say his work as a horror writer is of any less importance. This is a very enjoyable collection of short horror stories; some are very good and a few are outstanding.
I particularly enjoyed:
"Black Cab" The faceless driver of a city centre cab connected or not with the mysterious disappearance of a number of young ladies enjoying nights of fun in Newcastle city centre.
"The Fractured Man" What if you were a tortured soul and a lonely misunderstood man in your youth...would you not return at some later stage for revenge against those who had mocked you?
"The Causeway" Hugh a somewhat berated and criticized partner to the loud and raucous Pauline finally decides his own destiny. He clamps handcuffs on her right wrist attaching Pauline to the steering wheel and waits for the incoming tide to decide her fate. A unexpected ending completes a lovely little tale.
"The Crawl" A couple driving home on the motorway become involved in an incident that leads to a very scary encounter with a "scarecrow" figure " I had the most alarming and intense image that a scarecrow figure was going to step out from the hard shoulder and lay a hand scythe across the windscreen" The scarecrow provides a very powerful and memorable image in this fast flowing and intense story.
I received a copy of The Midnight Man from Samhain publishing in exchange for an honest review and this is what I have written. A good solid collection of horror gems from a highly respected English horror author enjoys a 4 star recommendation from me!

Chilling!

Despite starting this book almost a month back, I had deliberately restrained myself from just gobbling the stories, and by allowing myself the opportunity to savour the bitter-sweet-pungent taste of these stories over several nights (and occasional midnights), I can state that by allowing this book to go out-of-print the Silver Salamander people have enabled bad money to drive out good money. These stories should sit at the top level of horror literature, and it doesn't matter whether you fail to typify them into one cupboard or another, or just appreciate them for their brilliant story-telling.
The contents of this book are: -
1) Introduction.
2) He Who Laughs: a sardonic view of humour & consequent popularity, and where it all may lead to.
3) Black Cab: take on an urban myth, combined with paranoia.
4) Man Beast: inversion of the legend of were-beasts.
5) The Song My Sister Sang: one of the most pitiless and grim combinations of childhood trauma and legend of 'sirens' that I have ever read.
6) Yesterday I Flew With The Birds: loss of innocence, and much-much more.
7) The Fractured Man: rise & fall of the mind of a tortured killer.
8) The Crawl: the ultimate scarecrow-cum-slasher story!
9) Deep Blue: what music can do to you.
10) Guilty Party: the ultimate werewolf story (reading of which in the "Mammoth Book of Werewolves" had set me searching for more of Stephen laws' works).
11) Gordy's A-Okay: a little sweet story of guilt & pain being overcome by hope.
12) The Secret: study of paranoia, or something much-much more horrifying?
13) Pot Luck: one of those short-shorts that bring a smile to your face that had become all cloudy.
14) Bleeding Dry: this story could have become a superior addition to the Pan Book of Horror, as well as to any anthology dealing with Dracula in this post-modern world.
15) Junk: a creepy, chilling story of urban horror becoming very-very gothic.
16) An informative 'End Notes' at the end, describing the genesis of these stories.
To sum it up I find it deeply disturbing that such superior story-tellers like Stephen Laws, Stephen Gallagher and Peter Crowther are not publishing stories, and the market is getting flooded by all sorts of "junk"! John Pelan seems to have disappeared, can someone else come up and try to revive the art of writing these chilling short stories by providing them with a haven?

An Excellent Horror Anthology from a Masterful Writer

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I just never get tired of short stories, especially those in the horror genre. Author Stephen Laws gives me many reasons to keep loving shorts in his latest anthology, THE MIDNIGHT MAN. Although some of these tales have been previously published, they are all full of terror and well-written. They are also chock-full of originality which, for me, is a huge plus. Basically, this is one solid collection that any horror fan will love.
There are many reasons to love this set of stories. They are diverse yet unyielding. They leave the reader with a sense of fulfillment, but many also chill to the very bone. Each one is carefully crafted and well thought out, with pure writing and elegant form. In short, this is one of the best horror anthologies on the market.
Laws does an excellent job of throwing terrifying scenarios at you with minimal prompting. THE MIDNIGHT MAN contains some truly horrific material, and I can honestly say I found myself cringing at certain things. This is a true testament to his writing, as I am a seasoned veteran to horror.
One of my favorite stories is "The Crawl". In this story, a man and a woman are stalked relentlessly by someone or something that wants them dead. I can't really divulge much more at the risk of giving anything away. But let's just say this is a cleverly-crafted piece that you'll definitely want to check out.
THE MIDNIGHT MAN is entertaining and scary, a collection I highly recommend adding to your library. Regardless of what kind of horror genre fan you are, I would wager there is something in here for you. The book is available now, so be sure and give it a look.
