Many Blessings: A Tapestry of Accomplished African American Women by Sonnee Weedn, Ph.D. Ten years ago, Marin County psychologist, Dr. Sonnee Weedn, was asked to treat a young, urban, African American woman. Believing that as a white woman living in the reality of de facto segregation, she was not knowledgeable enough to treat this woman in psychotherapy, she set about to learn more about African American culture. This stimulated her thinking about African American women. What was it that allowed them to survive and thrive despite the double prejudice of racism and sexism. She wondered about the historical implications of the confluence of the Civil Rights Movement and the Women's Movement on this particular cohort of women, most who had come of age during law-enforced segregation. She traveled the country for three years, interviewing many African American women, some famous and others unknown except in their own particular circles of influence. She studied these women to determine what encouraged them to transcend discrimination and other obstacles they faced in order to rise up and claim their destinies as powerful and altruistic women. Ultimately, she chose thirty-one of the women she interviewed to represent the seven strengths she identified as having sustained them and allowed them to flourish. She believes that these seven strengths are the historical legacy of all African American women today, and encourages all women, regardless of ethnicity to learn from their example to increase their own resilience and determination.

Many Blessings
By George L. Mclaird
On the surface, Many Blessings: it is about African American women (Black female achievers and overachievers). But it is really a primer for girls and women who need a spark of inspiration for making their own dreams come true.
This would be a great book for parents to read to their children.
It is an affirmation for women where, even today, many are undervalued, disrespected, used and abused.
I have long believed when in the hands of a skilled writer, every person would have a story worth reading. Sonnee Weedn has done this for 31 women.
These stories allowed me to experience a variety of emotions; I've winced, smiled, cringed and have had tears come to my eyes.
For me, an older white man, this is a unique look inside the Black female experience in the USA.

Amazing
By Mia Vanderbilt
This book is amazing. It is a transformational and inspiring book. A journey from rock bottom to success, with each woman contributing to assisting and empowering other women. WELL DONE. When you purchase this book , buy 2. It is not a book you wish to loan out to your best friend or sister. It is one to be treasured and reread. The lessons of humanity are endless.

SENSITIVE TOUCH
By Howard C. Hughes
Having been brought up in the black church as a light-skinned young man, I have come to know the many subtle aspects of racism from all of its blatant angles, such as color, culture, and class. Being too dark for some and too light for others has been a heavy cross to bear for most of my life, no pun intended. Dr Weedn has successfully walked a sensitive tight rope through many of these psychological and emotional swamps that have decimated a culture over time, hundreds of years, since before the Mayflower. How each of the subjects interviewed has managed to survive this black Diaspora has deep roots in faith and spirituality. Several inspirational counterpoints have been addressed in Dr Weedn’s mosaic of African-American women such as faith, determination, strength, endurance, and love. Her book is a testament to what has not been addressed in school curriculums or historical folklore. This book was an undertaking that Dr Weedn was driven to do for a very important reason known only to her. Perhaps the movie “12 Years a Slave” and its three Oscars for Best Movie, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress (3/2/14) will represent a turning point in our society. If so, Dr Weedn can take some credit for being in-step with the “physio-psycho-socio-emotional” curve that has been slowly turning this country around. "Post racialism" is indeed a misnomer today but maybe not tomorrow if books like Dr Weedn's come into our public school curriculum. Dr. Howard Courtney Hughes
