There’s a fine line between the living and the dead, and Marshall is determined to cross it in this gut-wrenching debut novel.

Ever since the car accident that killed his identical twin brother, Marshall Windsor has been consumed with guilt and crippled by the secrets of that fateful night. He has only one chance to make amends and set things right. He must find a thin space—a mythical point where the barrier between this world and the next is thin enough for a person to step through to the other side.

But when a new girl moves into the neighborhood, into the exact same house Marsh is sure holds a thin space, she may be the key—or the unraveling of all his secrets.

As they get closer to finding a thin space—and closer to each other—March must decide once and for all how far he’s willing to go to right the wrongs of the living…and the dead.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up–This is a spooky story of the highest order. Twins Austin and Marsh Windsor looked so much alike that they were sometimes mistaken for each other, even by their girlfriends and high school classmates. The night Austin was killed in a car accident, they were on a double date, and Marsh was driving. To deal with his grief, he looks for a “thin space”–a mythic doorway where the living and dead can temporarily pass through into the worlds they left behind. Thin spaces don't come about easily; the same soul must both quicken and die in the same spot in order for an entry spot to be created. A woman had promised to make a thin space with her death, but a new family moves into her house before Marsh can get in and investigate. He hits upon a plan to befriend the new teenage residents, Maddie and Sam. Marsh and Maddie go barefoot through hospital corridors and across snow-covered parking lots, trying to find an entrance to the world of the dead. Throughout the book, the pressures of school and family weigh realistically on the protagonist; his mother needs to be hugged and classes need to be attended, even as he is falling apart with guilt and secrets. It turns out Maddie has a secret of her own. The final plot twist will catch most readers by surprise, making a second reading almost mandatory, to look for missed clues. The story is atmospheric and chilling, with a few four letter words, a bit of romance, and a satisfying ending.–Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley School, Fort Worth, TXα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Consumed by guilt, Marshall blames himself for the death of his identical twin brother, Austin. After all, he was the one driving the night of the accident that killed his sibling. Since then Marshall has been obsessively searching for the place where he can find a “thin space”—a place where, according to Celtic legend, the wall between this world and the next is thinner and where the dead can come back and the living can enter the world of the dead. He hopes it is a place where he can finally fix things. Can he find it, though? Can Maddie, the new girl in school, possibly help him? And why does she want to find a thin space, too? Casella’s first novel is a sometimes slow-paced and uneasy mix of realistic fiction and the paranormal that never quite gels. Still, many readers will be drawn by the clever premise and surprising plot twists, and Casella’s use of the thin-space legend is original and intriguing. Grades 7-10. --Michael Cart

Review
"Sometimes you need a book that hurts so good, and Jody Casella's powerful, authentically told debut is one of those books. Thin Space carries you through the heart of what it means to love and lose, to regret and move forward...and won't set you down until long after its riveting finale." (Jennifer Castle author of Beginning of After and You Look Different in Real Life )

"An eerie yet ultimately hopeful exploration of grief, guilt, friendship and redemption, Thin Space captivated me from start to finish." (Colleen Clayton author of What Happens Next )

Taut and heartwrenching
By Tracy Barrett
You'd never know THIN SPACE is a debut novel. It's superbly written, with spare prose that describes characters in just a few strokes and delivers a fairly complicated plot with one big twist and several smaller ones clearly and effectively. There are paranormal elements, but it's really a story grounded in the universal human experiences of loss, identity, love, responsibility, and other themes that most people, like the book's main character, Marsh, first grapple with as teenagers.

Before the book starts, Marsh's twin, Austin, was killed in a car accident. Marsh's feelings of guilt seem to go even deeper than you would expect from the fact that Marsh was driving when the fatality occurred. He had done something "stupid" that somehow had a factor in Austin's death.

According to Celtic lore, a "thin space" is created when someone dies in the same place where s/he was born. Marsh is determined to locate such a space and find his brother. And do what? Explain? Right the wrong? We don't know, and it doesn't seem as if March does either. He's aided by new-girl-in-town Maddie, who has some secrets of her own.

When the twists and other secrets are revealed, readers get a D'oh! moment--"I should have seen this coming!" But you don't, even though they seem obvious once revealed because the groundwork has been so carefully and deftly laid.

The story doesn't wrap everything up in a neat bow, but the characters are left well on the road to healing.

Disclaimer: I know Jody Casella and have admired her writing for years. But I know a lot of authors and you won't see many five-star reviews from me here (trust me; I've read dozens more books than I've reviewed).

Great character story, but wish there was more paranormal aspects
By Christine
Real Rating: 3.5 Stars

The summary for this book sounded super intriguing and sounded like it would be bursting with paranormal happenings and elements. Unfortunately, THIN SPACE didn't deliver this as much as I would have liked. There were some great aspects of the novel that I loved, but there were also some things that fell flat for me.

Marsh has lost his other half and is living through a fog the months after his brother was killed in a car accident that he was the driver of. He walks around barefoot and just goes through the motions, not truly knowing what is going on around. He is sad, depressed, and absolutely desperate to find this mythical thin space that his old neighbor told him about. He believes it's the only way to fix things and to see his brother again.

The whole first half of the novel was Marsh post falling apart. It's obvious that he's hit rock bottom. He doesn't talk to anyone, no one talks to him. This section of the book is basically just Marsh thinking to himself. You really don't get any interaction with others. While this is critical to showing Marsh's downfall, it did get a bit irritating. I liked Marsh's voice but I wanted to get to know other characters, hear a dialogue, something. I got kind of tired of just being inside his head.

When the girl next door, Maddie, moved in, the novel picked up quite significantly. She was a happy go lucky, shy girl who brought some new dynamics to the scene. She got Marsh to talk and open up. She had a history of her own that slowly was unveiled. She wasn't perfect but I really liked how she added to the novel and woke up Marsh, so to speak. She took everything weird that Marsh said or did with a grain of salt and joined him in his search for a thin space. Like I said, this is when the novel finally picked up. They are now on a search, looking in strange places they think the thin space would be. They had deep conversations and it was enjoyable to read.

There is a big twist near the end. BIG. It'll make you go back and reread things. You'll be honestly sitting on your bed thinking for a good 30 minutes. After I finished, I was still thinking about the implications of this twist. I did see it coming, though. I had my suspicions here and there but I never expected that I would be right. It changes the novel completely and I liked what it did to my whole reading experience.

Overall, THIN SPACE is more of a character story about what it's like to lose the one person you thought you would be with the rest of your life, your brother, your twin. It was deep, emotional, and raw. I really liked watching Marsh learn to deal with this loss, cope, and find a way to move on and open up to someone else. I do wish there was more paranormal aspects of the novel, though. I think that would have added to the novel significantly and kept it more interesting. But this book will leave you thinking and rethinking everything you just read, you can count on that!

A Great First Book
By Peggy H
It's hard to believe this is Jody Casella's first published novel. Thin Space is a great read, a real page-turner. It's a little creepy, though in a good way. But mostly it's a heartfelt exploration of one boy's grief and his response to it. The author is so in touch with her characters that she brings them to life. I really cared what happened to them. I will read this book again, maybe several times, to explore all the nuances in this wonderful character study.

Christ and the Virgin: The Forgotten Purpose of Christianity, by Samael Aun Weor

The energy that liberates a human being from suffering is known around the world by many names, such as Christ, Osiris-Ra, Quetzalcoatl, Jupiter, Avalokitesvara, etc. That is, Christ is a force at the very foundation of existence, and which can emerge in a properly prepared individual. Such a pure, divine energy can only be born in us through an immaculate conception, that mysterious symbol present in every great mythological and religious tradition. Bringing the Christ into the world is the duty of the Virginal Mother. The ancient Christian tradition represented the Virgin Mother just as the Egyptians did: as a virtuous, chaste woman blessed with the sacred duty of giving birth to the savior of the world. Unfortunately, over the centuries, the public was not taught about the true importance or nature of the Divine Mother, or how to work with her. Now, with the knowledge written in this book, anyone can have the precious experience of talking to their own inner Divine Mother, and be prepared for the birth of Christ within, which is the beginning of the Direct Path to absolute liberation. Topics include: What are Christ and Christianity? What is the Aquarian Age? The essential foundation of all religions Prophecies coming true now Immaculate conceptions, both spiritual and physical

About the Author
The name Samael Aun Weor is Hebrew and is pronounced sam-ayel on vay-ohr. Samael Aun Weor wrote over sixty books, gave thousands of lectures, and formed the worldwide Gnostic Movement, whose members number in the millions. And yet, in spite of his wisdom and generosity towards mankind, he said: "Do not follow me. I am just a signpost. Reach your own Self-realization." His lifelong mission was to deliver to humanity the total and exact science to develop the complete human being, that mysterious and ancient wisdom long hidden in the bosom of every great religion.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
It is said that there are seven great religions and five thousand sects. We the Gnostics affirm that there is only one great religion, and that is the TRUTH. We firmly believe that only he who lives the Truth is profoundly religious. The Truth wants to know itself in each man. Jesus of Nazareth is a living embodiment of the TRUTH. Jesus incarnated the TRUTH. Whoever incarnates the TRUTH becomes free. Those who incarnated the Truth founded the great religions and the great mystery schools. Buddha, Hermes, Krishna, Quetzalcoatl, etc. incarnated the Truth, and all those who dissolve the I and erect the columns of the temple upon the living rock incarnate the Truth. There is no higher religion than the Truth. We should distinguish between religious forms and religious principles. It is necessary to know that the principles are living cosmic formulae. Religious forms are the different systems of teaching those principles. The great infinite universal cosmic religion assumes distinct forms according to the needs of each race and era. In this manner, religious forms have succeeded one another throughout millions of years. The successive string of the all religions that have existed in the world always reveals the same immutable principles of the Truth. Religion is an inherent property of life, as humidity is of water. A man could belong to no religion and yet be profoundly religious. Every person who is capable of experiencing the Truth is profoundly religious, even if he does not belong to any religion. Religion is the intimate relationship of the mind with the Truth. Only the religious man is truly revolutionary. Some philosophers say that religions have failed. We assure you that every religion has fulfilled its historic mission. Buddhism fulfilled its mission with the birth of merely one living Buddha. One Christified person justifies the existence of Christianity. One Imam well justifies the existence of the religion of Mohammed. All the great religions of the world have achieved their objectives through men who obtained their "religare”-in other words, who incarnated the Truth. Really, many are called, but few are chosen. This law has already been fulfilled in all the religions. There is no basis for assuring that religions failed in their mission to "religare” [reunite] man with the Truth. In all religions are perfect ones who succeeded in reuniting the soul or consciousness with God.

Short but Inspirational
By Shard
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was exactly the inspiration needed. One of my favorite passages was "It is vain for the Christ to be born in Bethlehem if he is not born in our hearts. Fruitless is his crucifixion, death, and resurrection in the holy land if he is not born, does not die, or resurrect in ourselves as well."
The book uncovers all the symbolisms of Christ and the Virgin Mary, and tries to get you to focus on what is most important about Christ. (See quote above)

Amazing!
By Truth Seeker
This is definitely a must read for those searching for spiritual truths. Samuel Aun Weor again with depth of wisdom, offers insights. He challenges one to reevaluate what we understand about Christ in our our lives on a more personal and individual basis. As with his other books, like Dream Yoga or Gnostic Psychology, to name only a few, this book is one to read and then reread as the depth can only be perceived through reading and meditation.

Asia hands will like this one.

Interesting historical novel set mostly in Malaya (now Malaysia) with some chapters in Cambridge, England, and Tibet, during the turbulent times of WWII, the ending of the British Empire, and Mao's China.

A gripping human drama which sheds light on a turbulent period of Malaysia's history. Highly recommended
By Poppy MacNeal
This is a superbly paced novel. The plot has clear direction and moves swiftly from joy to tragedy with minor detours through comedy and pathos. The characters are elegantly described and the relationships between them sing. Set against the backdrop of some of Malaysia's most traumatic periods, the writer maintains a find balance between historical narrative and fiction. The accuracy of the historical description never dominates but adds to the fascinating dynamics between the protagonists. Above all, the strength of the main characters shines through and will create a memory which lingers long after you have finished the novel.

This would make an excellent choice for a book club or reading group.

A must Read
By David E Hester
It was hard to put this down once you had started. I live in Malaysia and am familiar with some of the history. I found it more interesting in that it seemed to accurately to follow the historical timelines.
Also the female characters were such strong women.
Truly enjoyable.

About the Author
Abby Green worked for twelve years in the film industry. The glamour of four a.m. starts, dealing with precious egos, the mucky fields, driving rain...all became too much. After stumbling across a guide to writing romance, she took it as a sign and saw her way out, capitalising on her long-time love for romance books. Now she is very happy to sit in her nice warm house while others are out in the rain and muck! She lives and works in Dublin.

Andreas Xenakis didn't like the strength of the thrill of triumph that moved through him. It signified that this moment held more importance for him than he'd care to admit. Bitterly, he had to concede that perhaps it did. After all, practically within touching distance now was the woman who had all but cried rape for her own amusement, to protect her untarnished image in her father's eyes. She'd merited him a savage beating, losing his job, being blacklisted from every hotel in Europe and having to start over again on the other side of the world. Far away from anyone he'd known or who had known him.

She was still exquisite. More so. Andreas had found himself imagining that she couldn't possibly be as stunning as she'd been since he'd seen her five years ago. But she was. She was a woman now, not a teenager.

Her hair was so blonde it shone almost white under the soft lighting of a hundred chandeliers. It was pulled up into a high bun. She held herself with the same effortlessly regal bearing he'd first noticed in that glittering ballroom in Paris. His mouth compressed. She was a thoroughbred in the midst of lesser beings. He could see how women near her instinctively shut her out, as if sensing competition.

His eyes moved over the curve of her cheek and jaw. The patrician line of her nose more than hinted at the blue-blooded heritage of her Italian ancestry, diluted only in part by her half English mother who had been related to royalty. Her skin was still pale and looked soft: as soft as a rose petal. Andreas's belly clenched hard to recall just how soft it had felt under his fingers.

He'd touched her reverently, as if she were an ethereal goddess, and he'd felt as if he was marking her, staining her purity with his touch. His hands were fists by his sides now as he thought of how she'd urged him on with breathy, sexy entreaties in his ear: 'Please.I want you to touch me, Andreas.' Only to turn on him almost in the same breath and accuse him of attacking her…

She turned then, to face towards him, and that low, simmering anger was eclipsed when blood rushed to his head and to his groin, making him simultaneously dizzy and hard.

He couldn't escape the impact of those huge, glittering bright blue eyes ringed with long dark lashes. But it was her mouth which drew his gaze and kept it. Sinfully lush and pink. Just waiting to be kissed…crushed under his. Andreas had to consciously will down the intense desire. He was fast being reduced to the instincts of an animal, and he hated her for having this effect on him. Still. For ever, mocked the small voice in his head.

No. Andreas rejected it fiercely. Not for ever. Just until he'd had her. Until they'd finished what she'd started when she'd upended his life so cruelly and comprehensively. Because she'd been curious and bored. Because she'd had the power. Because he'd been nothing.

Resolve firmed in Andreas's gut. He was far from nothing any more, and thanks to a cruel twist of circumstances Siena DePiero was reduced to lower than he'd ever been, rendering her exposed and vulnerable—to him.

Her blonde head dipped out of view momentarily and Andreas's insides contracted with something indefinable that went beyond where he wanted to investigate. He didn't like the fact that he was uncomfortably aware of other men's interest, of their gazes after her, covetous and even lascivious. It made him feel possessive and that was not welcome.

She'd had the gall to play with him once. Andreas desired her. That was all. His eyes caught sight of her bright blonde head again and he watched and waited as she drew ever closer to him in the crowd.

Siena DePiero was in the act of navigating through the crowd with a heavy tray, trying not to upend the contents over someone's feet, when a broad chest at her eye level stopped her from moving forward.

She looked up and had the impression of a very tall man, broad all the way through to his shoulders. A pristine tuxedo with a white bow-tie marked him out as slightly different. As Siena's mouth opened to say excuse me her gaze reached his face and her heart stopped.

He was no stranger.

Andreas Xenakis. Here.

The recognition was instantaneous. The knowledge was cataclysmic. It was as if mere minutes had passed since she'd last seen him, yet it had been five years. He looked bigger, darker, leaner.

She could instantly read the unmistakable light of cold hatred in his eyes and her insides contracted painfully. Of all the people to meet in this situation. No one would get more mileage out of it than Andreas Xenakis. And could she even blame him? a small voice mocked.

'Well, well, well.'

His voice was painfully familiar, immediately twisting her insides into a knot of tension. 'Fancy meeting you here.'

Siena could feel his eyes rake her up and down, taking in her server's uniform of white shirt, black tie and black trousers. The effect he had on her now was as devastating as it had been five years before. It was as if she had been plugged into an electrical socket and the current was running through her blood, making it hum, as disturbing and disconcerting as she remembered—especially in light of what had happened.

Her insides contracted even more painfully.

Dark slashing brows framed his incredible navy blue eyes. High cheekbones drew the eye down to a strong jaw. And his mouth…that beautiful sensuous mouth…was all at once sexy and mocking. He lifted one brow, clearly waiting for a response.

Struggling to retain some sense of composure, when she felt like a tiny boat being lashed on high seas, Siena managed to find her voice and said coolly, 'Mr Xenakis. How nice to see you again.'

His arched brow went higher and he let out a curt laugh. His voice wasn't so heavily accented any more. It had more of a mid-Atlantic twang. 'Even now you can make it sound as if you're greeting me at your own dinner party—not serving drinks to people you once woudn't deign to look in the eye.'

Siena flinched minutely. She didn't have to be psychic to recognise that the man who stood before her now was a much harder and more ruthless creature than the man she'd met in Paris. Xenakis's meteoric rise to become one of the world's most prominent hoteliers at the ridiculously young age of thirty had been well documented in the press.

'I'm flattered you remember me,' he drawled, 'After all we've met only once—as memorable as that meeting was.'

He mocked her. Siena felt like pointing out pedantically that it had actually been twice. After all, she'd seen him again the morning after that catastrophic night. But that memory was far too much to handle right now.

'Yes.' She glanced away for a minute, uncomfortable under that dark gaze. 'Of course I remember you.'

Suddenly it was too much. The tray of glasses started to wobble alarmingly in Siena's hands as the full magnitude of seeing him again hit her. Surprising her, Andreas took it competently out of her white-knuckled grasp and put it down on a nearby table before she could object.

Just then they were interrupted by Siena's boss, who was shooting none too subtle daggers at Siena while smiling obsequiously at Andreas.

'Mr Xenakis, is everything all right here? If my staff have been in any way remiss—'

'No.' His voice was abrupt, cold. He truly was Lord of all he surveyed now. Exuding power and confidence and that tangible sexual charisma.

Feeling a little dizzy, Siena tuned back in to Xenakis's voice, being directed to her boss.

'Everything is fine. I am acquainted with Miss—'

Siena cut in urgently before Xenakis could say her hated name, 'Mr Xenakis, like I said, it was nice to see you again. If you'll excuse me, though, I really should get back to work.'

Siena picked up the heavy tray again and, without looking at Andreas Xenakis or her boss, fled on very shaky legs.

Andreas followed the progress of the bright blonde head, inordinately annoyed with this small rotund man for interrupting them. He was saying now, in a toadying voice, 'I'm so sorry about that, Mr Xenakis. Our staff have the strictest instructions not to make conversation with any of the guests, but Miss Mancini is new—'

Andreas bit out coldly, 'I spoke to her, actually.' Then he realised something and looked at the man, 'You say her name is Mancini?'

'Yes,' her boss said absently, and then he smiled even more slimily, saying sotto voce to Andreas, 'Of course her looks are a bonus—she could be a model, if you ask me. I don't know what she's doing waitressing, but I can't complain. I've never had so many requests for her phone number.'

Andreas desisted from informing the man that she was waitressing because she was persona non grata in polite society across Europe. He pushed aside the fact of her name-change and felt something like rage building inside him. He fixed the manager with a look that would have felled many. 'I presume you do not give out her number, of course?'

The man immediately went puce and blustered, 'Well, I… Well, of course not, Mr Xenakis. I don't know what kind of a service you think I'm running here, but I can assure you—'

'Don't worry,' Andreas sliced in cuttingly. 'I will be assured once I've checked out your company thoroughly.'

With that he turned and walked in the direction he'd last seen Siena moving. He had something much more urgent to take his attention now: making sure Siena DePiero didn't disappear into thin air.

A couple of hours later Siena was walking quickly through the moonlit streets around Mayfair. She still hadn't fully processed that she'd seen Andreas Xenakis, here in London, where she'd come to hide and move on with her life. To her everlasting relief she hadn't bumped into him again, but she'd been horribly aware of his tall form and had endeavoured to make sure she stayed on the far side of the room at all times.

Now, as she walked and felt the blisters on her heels, she cursed herself for letting Andreas get to her like that. Yes, they had history. She winced inwardly. It wasn't a pretty history. She didn't want to be reminded of the blazing look of anger and betrayal on his face when she'd stood beside her father five years ago, holding her dress up over her chest, and agreed shakily: 'Yes, he attacked me, Papa. I couldn't stop him

Andreas had cut in angrily, his Greek accent thick. 'That's a downright lie. She was begging me—'

Her father had held up an imperious hand and cut Andreas off. He'd turned to face Siena and she'd looked up at him, terrified of his power to inflict punishment if he chose to believe Andreas.

He'd said quietly, 'He's lying, isn't he? You would never let a man like this touch you, would you? Because you know you're infinitely better than him.'

Struggling to hide her disgust and hatred, Siena had given the only answer she could. She'd nodded and felt sick. 'Yes, he's lying. I would never allow someone like him to touch me.'

Thinking of the unpalatable past made Siena feel trembly and light-headed. She didn't want to contemplate the very uncomfortable fact that he still had such a profound effect on her.

Once again, though, she marvelled at how far removed he was from the man who had once presided over servers in a hotel. In all honesty she was surprised he'd recognised her at all from his lofty position. She knew how easy it was to see only the hand that served you, not the person. Siena recalled her father's blistering anger when he'd berated her once for aiding a waiter who'd dropped a tray at one of his legendary parties. He'd hauled her into his offce and gripped her arm painfully.

'Don't you know who we are? You step over people like him. You do not stop to help them.'

Siena had bitten back the angry retort on her lips. Just like you stepped over your own illegitimate son in the street? Our own brother? That audacious comment alone would have merited her sister a severe beating. That was his preferred twisted form of torture—if Siena provoked him, Serena would be punished.

Siena saw the bus stop in the distance and breathed a sigh of relief. Tomorrow she would have forgotten all about bad memories and running into Andreas Xenakis. Her insides lurched, mocking her assertion. For one second earlier, when she'd first seen Andreas, she'd imagined she was dreaming.

She'd never forgotten what she had done to that man by falsely accusing him. More often than she cared to admit she remembered that night and how, with just a look and a touch, he'd made her lose any sense of rationality and sanity. On some level, when she'd read about his stellar success in the newspapers, she'd been relieved; to see him flourishing far better than she would have ever expected assuaged some tiny part of the guilt she felt.

Resolutely Siena pushed down her incendiary thoughts. Familiar nagging anxiety took their place. She wondered now, as she approached the bus stop, if the two jobs she had would be enough to help her sister. But she knew with a leaden feeling that nothing short of a miracle could do that.

Siena had just arrived under the shelter of the bus stop when she noticed a sleek silver sports car pulling up alongside where she stood. Even before the electric window lowered on the passenger side Siena's heart-rate had increased.

The starkly handsome features of Andreas Xenakis looked out and Siena backed away instinctively. His presence was evidence that he wasn't about to let her off so easily. He wanted to torture her and make the most out of her changed circumstances. In a second he'd jumped out of the car and was lightly holding her elbow.

'Please.' He smiled urbanely, as if stopping to pick up women at bus stops resplendent in a tuxedo was entirely normal for him. 'Let me give you a lift.'

Siena was so tense she felt as if she might crack in two. Very aware of her ill-fitting thin denim jacket in the biting early spring breeze, and the fatigue that made her bones ache, she bit out, 'I'm fine, thank you. The bus will be along shortly.'

Andreas shook his head. He had that same incredulous expression that he'd worn when she'd spoken to him before. 'Are your co-workers aware you could probably have conversed with every foreign guest in that room in their own tongue?'

Hurt at this back-handed compliment, and his all too banal but accurate assessment of her misery Siena pulled her arm free. She acted instinctively, wanting to say something to prick his pride and hopefully push him away. 'I said I'm fine, thank you very much. I'm sure you have better things to do than follow me around like some besotted puppy dog.'

A Romance Junkie
By A Romance Junkie
I agree with most of the readers about this book- Romance is alive and doing well in this wonderful book. I'm not going to tell you the story because others already have but I want to say that I loved, loved, loved this book. Lately I've been reading books with little or no conflict- really how much sex can you have before it's a bore! This book has a wonderful story of misunderstanding and love. Two characters that could not live without each other, just wonderful. Every night I would read a little because I just didn't want to reach the end, I wanted this book to go on forever- alas it ended too soon. I gave this book five stars and recommend it highly.

Hot and angsty read
By Fiona
It's been a while since I read an Abby Green and I have several waiting on my overflowing TBR but I picked this one up when it was mentioned as having a virgin in a newspaper interview and was drawn in immediately. I love the world she creates and I love that we catch glimpses of people from her other books and in this case an upcoming book.

I loved the heroine Siena who is down but not out, rebuilding her life and that of her sister after an immensely privileged but abusive childhood. Five years ago Andreas was collateral damage, a young man Siena was so drawn to, she forget everything for those few moments until her father arrived.

Now Andreas is back for revenge for the way his life was ruined by her father in retaliation for touching his daughter, supposedly against her will. He has never forgotten her.

Siena too has never forgotten Andreas, the burden of guilt she feels for lying about what happened never resolved.

I loved how these two interacted. The sizzling chemistry between them is off the charts but there is more to it than just the smexy. This was a very emotional read and managed to get me all choked up so I gave it the five stars.

On Being Human, by Erich Fromm

Erich Fromm’s insightful work on the modern human condition, and how to break free of its bonds
In the 1960s, renowned social psychologist Erich Fromm argued that people were becoming increasingly alienated. No longer were we dynamic, constantly creative beings. Instead, he observed, we were becoming fixated on things like television, while the specter of nuclear war remained a consistent worry. On Being Human gathers several ofFromm’s writings on the “New Humanism” he proposed. In addition, the book presents a most interesting chapter on “Having” and “Being” according to Master Eckhart and Karl Marx that originally was written to be included in To Have or To Be?  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erich Fromm including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

From Kirkus Reviews
Posthumous gathering of thoughts by the late socialist/humanist of The Art of Loving, The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness, etc. Fromm (1900-80), a German psychoanalyst who came to the US in 1934 and lectured at Columbia, Yale, Bennington, Michigan State, and NYU while publishing books on Western man facing his own alienation, wrote most of these formerly uncollected pieces, or delivered them off the cuff, during the 60's and 70's. Most of them circle around a common thought: alienation as a disease of modern man and the need for a humanist socialism ``as distinct from existing capitalism as from the falsification of socialism that Soviet communism calls itself.'' How can a call for ``a new humanism as a condition for one world'' (as one piece herein is entitled by the book's editor, Rainer Funk) be answered by that creature whom Fromm describes as so utterly alienated by his fixation on ``things'' and ``having'' and by his blind eye to ``being''? To locate some possible firm ground on which to begin building this new humanist/socialist, Fromm digs into unlikely places and finds a humanist bond between the concepts of man in Karl Marx and the treatises and sermons of the medieval German Catholic mystic Meister Eckhart. Both writers focused on poverty and ``having'' and ``being'' for their visions of man's social possibilities. Like Marx, Fromm says, ``Eckhart denounces the property structure of existence as the evil that stands in the way of man's freedom, his aliveness, his finding himself.'' Some of this reads like a period piece, hinging as it does on our postwar Big Bomb anxieties and on depression flooding from the cold war- -decades of bad feelings that still abound but are fading into new horrors. About the Author
Erich Fromm (1900–1980) was a bestselling psychoanalyst and social philosopher whose views about alienation, love, and sanity in society—discussed in his books such as Escape from Freedom, The Art of Loving, The Sane Society, and To Have or To Be?—helped shape the landscape of psychology in the mid-twentieth century. Fromm was born in Frankfurt, Germany, to Jewish parents, and studied at the universities of Frankfurt, Heidelberg (where in 1922 he earned his doctorate in sociology), and Munich. In the 1930s he was one of the most influential figures at the Frankfurt Institute of Social Research. In 1934, as the Nazis rose to power, he moved to the United States. He practiced psychoanalysis in both New York and Mexico City before moving to Switzerland in 1974, where he continued his work until his death.

Being Controversially Human
By A Customer
This is a collection of formerly unpublished works by Fromm. Please take my advice to read this only after you are familiar with Fromm. I made the mistake of reading it before I knew of Fromm's works. The essays contained serve to reinforce his studies and theories. Most who are reading this as their first Fromm book will find his essays insufficient. I was particularly at a loss regarding the Meister Eckhart and Karl Marx essays.

“What would I do in Mississippi?” I asked.

“What you want to and can.” He sat down again and turned toward me. “It’s all open. There’s a state to be made, and there’s a free hand for the fashioner. Half the available land hasn’t been claimed now, and there’s a new treaty afoot that’ll send the Chocktaws west of the river to give the state a vast new territory.” He clenched a hand. “That country must and will be settled, and it’s better that it be done by Southerners.”

Adventuring in Frontier Mississippi
By Theo Logos
`The Wild Yazoo' has the feel of a black and white romantic adventure movie from the 1940s with stars whose faces you recognize but can't quite recall their names. That is, it feels dated and out of step with contemporary tastes, and really isn't a classic, yet still has some class and tells a decent story. You probably wouldn't go out of your way to rent that movie, but you might spend an evening watching it on TV. That is the best way I can describe the impression this book made on me.

The book tells the story of a young man from Virginia who is forced to leave the Old Dominion in disgrace, and travel to Mississippi, a state that is still being carved out of the wilderness during the Andrew Jackson administration. He treks into the New Purchase, a wilderness area of the state that has just been acquired from the Choctaw Indians, and learns to survive and thrive frontier style. Throughout he has adventures on steamships, in the seedy alleys and bars of Natchez-Underhill, on bear and panther hunts, in camp meetings, on the Natchez Trace, and in pitched battles with cut-throats and horse thieves. All of his adventures seem to both commence and terminate with him sitting around a bar or a campfire drinking outrageous amounts of whiskey while he contentedly smokes and swaps tall tales with the exaggerated characters he meets on the frontier.

The greatest strength of this book is that Myers, the author, was a historian of the American frontier, who also wrote several non fiction histories. He brought his detailed knowledge of frontier Mississippi to this tale, and used it to successfully conjure the feel of that wide open and wild time. The details of the story are always vivid and ring true. Conversely, the book's greatest weakness is that many of Myers' characters never go beyond broad sketches and lack much depth.

If you are a fan of John Myers Myers writing (as I am), you will want to find and read this book - it certainly isn't his best effort, but it is far from his worst. If you are intrigued by the setting of the southwest frontier along the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers in the time of Andy Jackson, `The Wild Yazoo' should prove a highly satisfying read. If neither the author nor the subject's setting hold a particular appeal for you, consider this book a three star effort, and take it or leave it when you find it.

A wonderful book from a great author, which puts a human face on the history of the settling of Mississippi. An exuberant adventure and a tugger at the heart strings, too. But then, John Myers Myers never disappoints.

Molly Gray never trusted Ben Fleiss, her best friend Wendy’s abusive husband. When Wendy’s broken body is found in a dumpster, Molly is devastated—and knows exactly who the killer is. But as viscerally as Molly hates Ben, she loves Ben and Wendy’s seven-year-old child, Naomi. While awaiting trial, Ben retains custody of his daughter, and Molly soon realizes the only way to keep Naomi safe is to stay as close to Ben as possible—even if it means consoling and flattering the man who murdered her friend.

Yglesias’s most suspenseful work, The Murderer Next Door is rich with startling twists and revelations hinged to uncanny psychological insight. This ebook features a new illustrated biography of Rafael Yglesias, including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

From Publishers Weekly
In a crime story based on an actual case, closet transvestite Ben Fliess murders his wife yet maintains custody of their daughter; narrator Molly Gray, a New York City lawyer and close family friend, ingratiates herself with Ben in order to save the child. "Smartly paced," said PW. "Yglesias's adroit plot climaxes in a totally unanticipated third-act heartstopper."

From Library Journal
Milly, born poor but raised by a wealthy woman, marries well and is a successful attorney. Wendy, her rich but plain best friend, marries Ben in a late bid for domestic happiness. Their daughter, Naomi, becomes the light of both Molly and Wendy's life, and strengthens their deep bond. When Ben murders Wendy, Molly is desperate to take Naomi from him. Driven past reasoning into the byways of sexual deviation, deceit, and violence, she sacrifices marriage, career, reputation, and almost her life trying first one ploy and then another to remain close to Naomi--including accepting Ben in a new way. Inspired by an actual murder in New York City (the Pikul case), where the novel is set, this is a compelling account of a strong woman crumbling under forces she cannot control. It will appeal to Turow and Wolfe readers. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 5/15/90.

One of the Worst!
By TL
This is, by far, one of the worst books I have ever read. The plot line is so illogical. Why a sharp, intelligent woman would be interested in leaving her husband for such a creep is not credible to me. I kept thinking the book would get better as I progressed, but it never did. Don't waste your time.

Retreat in daily life
By Carol Blank
Writer/editor Jim Manney describes himself as "a baseball fan from the Midwest with a mortgage, a family, two cars, and a full-time job," an ordinary guy who found the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola beneficial. He wrote this book, "to plant the idea in your mind that the Spiritual Exercises might be helpful for you, too."

So, this is not a step-by-step guide or detailed explanation; rather, it is one person's journey through this age-old form of prayer (Manney likens it in some ways to Navy Seal training). The resulting text describes the author's personal misgivings, challenges, and successes interwoven with information on the development of the Spiritual Exercises from their inception to the twenty-first century.

Manney chose to make the exercises as a "retreat in daily life," continuing his normal work and family routines but making time for daily spiritual reading and writing under the guidance of a spiritual director, with whom he met weekly. He gives a good explanation of other options, then shares his basic schedule over the seven months. He explains the relationship with his spiritual director, admitting that toward the end, when his "spiritual energy had leaked away like the helium seeping out of a party balloon...Dennis, my spiritual director, put his arm around me and helped me to the finish line."

Throughout the book Manney shares results, such as getting to know Jesus better, loving him more, and achieving an attitude of contemplation in action, "a kind of watchfulness, a sensitivity to the spiritual currents while I'm engaged in whatever I'm doing."

With all this inspiration, the author wisely provides a wealth of resources for those who want to take the next step.

Good Find
By Fred Ganssle
I read the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius before and tried to follow them, but quit in frustration finding them too difficult. Jim Manney put St. Ignatius' thinking into more modern terms by explaining who St. Ignatius' audience was and the practices of the time that he lived in, and then proposing how we might apply the principles to present day living. He so inspired me that I found an on-line retreat that I could follow and use in conjunction with his book. Between the two, I think I will be able to grow closer to God in thought and practice.

Jim Manney Writes Religious Ideas Like a Novel
By Amazon Customer
This book brings religious experiences down to earth and inspires without being "preachy" presenting ideas with pleasant clarity. Jim Manney has the gift of reducing complicated dogma into everyday reality. It is impossible to read this book without enriching one's life, reviewing theories and reshaping them into practical resolutions. If ever I lost this book, I would buy another if only to have it always as reference. St. Ignatius sees God in all things and events and explains how we can do the same and be happier human beings. Jim Manney translates the ideas of past centuries and makes them alive in our time.
