Testimony: The Legacy of Schindler's List and the USC Shoah Foundation, by Steven Spielberg, The Shoah Foundation

This illustrated, large-format book, Testimony: The Legacy of Schindler’s List and the USC Shoah Foundation—A 20th Anniversary Commemoration combines, for the first time, the behind-the-scenes story of the making of Schindler’s List with the history of the remarkable organization inspired by that landmark film. Steven Spielberg’s encounters with Holocaust survivors who visited the set and personally told him their stories set him on a quest to collect and preserve survivor testimony for generations to come. In 1994, he established the Shoah Foundation, and in the following four years nearly 52,000 eyewitness interviews were video recorded in 56 countries and 32 languages. This commemorative book relates how the foundation accomplished this feat through a worldwide network of dedicated people, pioneering interview methods, and state-of-the art technologies.

A special 140-page section tells the riveting story of the film in photos, script excerpts, and the words of the cast and crew, including Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and Spielberg. Drawing from the Universal Pictures archives and exclusive interviews, here are details on Spielberg’s struggle to bring Oskar Schindler’s story from novel to script to screen, the casting, cinematography, and especially what happened during the difficult shoot in Poland in 1993—on locations where actual events of the Holocaust occurred.

Partnered with the University of Southern California since 2006, the USC Shoah Foundation has broadened its mission and now collects and preserves testimonies from other genocides, including those in Armenia, Cambodia, and Rwanda, while expanding its educational outreach, especially to young people. Its Visual History Archive—digitized, fully searchable, and hyperlinked to the minute—has become the largest digital collection of its kind in the world.  As Spielberg writes in his introduction, “I believe the work of the USC Shoah Foundation is the most important legacy of Schindler’s List.”

Review
An informative coffee table book for film buffs and those interested in Jewish history. (Kirkus)

From the Back Cover

Schindler's List was a success by any Hollywood measure and far surpassed all expectations for a black-and-white film about the Holocaust. Released in 1993, it won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, and is ranked ninth in the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest American Movies. But its legacy is a far more enduring one. As director Steven Spielberg says, "The film was to be the prelude to the most important work of my life." Spielberg's encounters with Holocaust survivors who came to the filmmakers' location in Poland and told him their stories set him on a mission to collect and preserve survivor testimonies so that these eyewitnesses could become teachers of humanity for generations to come. This twentieth-anniversary commemorative book presents, for the first time, the behind-the-scenes stories of the making of Schindler's List and the creation of the Shoah Foundation, the remarkable organization that Spielberg established twenty years ago.

Drawing from the Universal Pictures archives and exclusive interviews, Part One portrays the filmmaking in dramatic black-and-white photographs that echo the film's acclaimed cinematography; in excerpts from the script and the Thomas Keneally novel; and in the words of the cast and crew, including Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and Spielberg.

Part Two relates how the Shoah Foundation, in its first four years, raced against time to videotape nearly 52,000 testimonies in 56 countries and 32 languages, while Holocaust survivors and witnesses were still alive to be interviewed. The book also describes in fascinating detail how this worldwide network of dedicated people used pioneering methods and state-of-the-art technologies to collect, index, and preserve the video recordings. With its Visual History Archive digitized, fully searchable, and hyperlinked to the minute, the foundation then developed countless ways to share the testimonies with the world, especially young people. Since joining the University of Southern California in 2006 and renamed the USC Shoah Foundation—The Institute for Visual History and Education, it expanded its educational initiatives as well as its mission, which is now collecting and preserving testimonies from the Armenian, Cambodian, and Rwandan genocides, as well as the Nanjing Massacre.

The ultimate lesson of Schindler's List, and of the USC Shoah Foundation story, is rooted in the deeds of Oskar Schindler, who never planned on becoming a household name for heroism but acted out of his humanity to protect his Jewish workers. As Spielberg writes in his introduction, "One person can change the world, and that person is you."

We've visited Schindler's factory & museum in Krakow plus Auschwitz, These are real places and real people were murdered in the Holocaust, this book keeps it all alive for us. I totally endorse any type of realism that ensures "Never Again".

Loving recounting of the making of a monumental film and the subsequent creation of powerful force for good
By Lylelovesbooks
Testimony gives you an insiders look into the making of a great film and the non-profit organization that followed. Great to read Steven Spielberg's personal thoughts, motivations and emotions making Schindler's List. The behind the scenes feel of the first half provides new insights into the film itself. The second part of the book is a clear told story of building a world-wide organization whose cause is education in the on going battle to prevent genocides. You learn how the great gathering of testimonies around, fighting against time and resources was accomplished and how that effort is being put to use for the greater good of humanity. Lovely

From the Inside Flap
Marooned on a mountain, the Aldens survive a landslide and find a Native American secret.

About the Author
The Boxcar Children Series was created by Gertrude Chandler Warner, a teacher, when she realized that there were few, if any, books for children that were both easy and fun to read. She drew on her own experiences in writing the mysteries. As a child, she had spent hours watching trains near her home, and often dreamed about what it would be like to live in a caboose or freight car. In each story, she chose a special setting and introduced unpredictable, unusual or eccentric characters, to help highlight the Aldens’ independence and resourcefulness. Miss Warner lived in Putnam, Massachusetts until her death in 1979.

The Boxcar children embark on another adventure only to run into trouble and then mystery atop a New England mountaintop. The mystery comes in the form of the whereabouts of a long-lost treasure that they learn about from an old Indian woman who says her grandfather hid it. The story takes a touching twist when the children meet a young Indian boy who also is looking for the treasure that he thinks belongs to him as the last member of the tribe to possess the secret goods. You'll be surprised by who eventually finds the treasure and what happens to each of the characters.

Moving from rebel battlefields in West Africa to the closed doors of intelligence offices in London and Washington, this novel is at once a gripping thriller, a tensely plotted story full of memorable characters and breathtaking twists, and a masterful study of power and how it is wielded—a brilliant addition to the James Bond canon.

Review
“Solo never fails to keep the reader on the edge of his chair. . . . Boyd is a brilliant storyteller and the interwoven plots and surprises of Solo are often superior to Fleming’s own narrative stunts.” (The Daily Beast)

“A light, slick, sinuous adventure. . . . Though Boyd’s iteration of the character owes something to Graham Greene’s moral melancholy, Fleming’s Bond remains recognizable. So does the excellent pacing: Solo feels so quick that it could already be a movie.” (USA Today)

“Boyd has immersed himself in the character, the author and his oeuvre and come up with an adventure that’s triumphantly the equal of the great Bond adventures. . . . A brilliant imitation that’s occasionally superior to the prototype.” (Robert McCrum, The Guardian)

“Boyd brings back the real Bond, triumphantly. . . . A formidable literary achievement. . . . It succeeds wonderfully.” (The Daily Mail)

“A perfectly judged narrative tempo . . . . The action is expertly plotted. . . . Solo’s true literary craft lies in the subtlety of its correspondences and also the suspenseful quality that keeps us on our toes until the closing pages. Mission accomplished.” (The Financial Times)

“Breathtaking. . . . Boyd manages to enrich and refresh a character we thought we knew too well. . . . A terrific twisting thriller. . . . A tremendous Bond story.” (The Sunday Times)

“A compulsively readable thriller, replicating the cocktail of ingredients that got Fleming’s readers hooked and yet to let the cracks in the fantasy figure show through. A thoroughly rewarding, entertaining and ultimately thought provoking fix.” (GQ)

“More than half a century on, Boyd proves that there are plenty of pages left in 007’s passport. I doubt his creator could have done it better.” (Olen Steinhauer, The New York Times Book Review)

“An exhilarating tightrope of a tale that’s also just retro enough to conjure the original books. . . . Boyd adroitly captures the postcolonial atmosphere of West Africa with a Graham Greene-like eye for detail. . . . Boyd has rendered his Bond perfectly.” (Valerie Plame, O magazine)

“The prose of Boyd is frankly superior to that of Fleming. . . . A bloody good thriller. A triumph.” (The Observer)

“Solo includes faint echoes of Joseph Conrad, whose stories of adventure, intrigue and espionage are deeply infused with a sense of moral inquiry and consequence. . . . A Bond novel but also a Boyd one, with richer and deeper concerns coursing alongside the Flemingesque flourishes that should keep fans satisfied, as well.” (The Washington Post)

“William Boyd understands his man very well. . . . This is Bond done right.” (The Atlantic)

“Boyd’s prose is crisp and clean, and the story fairly ricochets through its twists and turns as Bond zips from London to Africa and on to the US. Fans of the original Fleming novels will find much to enjoy.” (The Irish Times)

Not bad but......
By Paul Rooney
This addition to the Bond series sees it taken back to 1969. Bond is sent to a west African country to assassinate a rebel leader. After some mis-adventures there the action moves to Washington DC where plot is unravelled.

This is not a bad story, better than Sebastian Faulks effort but I did enjoy Jefferey Deavers book which I would put on a par with this.

The positive for me is that Boyd has made the effort to write in the style of Ian Fleming, we have a Bond who is not a superman just good at his job. The plot itself is reasonable, a bit anti-American in my opinion or very cynical at least if taken against the back drop of recent world events.

The two main negatives for me are his first love interest. I won't mention why because others are to read the book but once its read I think it will be apparent. The second is Bond's use of one of the modern rap singers favourite words. This particular word is one of my favourites as well but I really don't see the need for Bond to be using it now after 50 plus years of not needing to.

All in all a good adventure, not great but some good escapisim and thats why I have read these books for forty years.

Boyd. William Boyd.
By Nick Brett
I am a fan of William Boyd's writing and was delighted to hear he had been selected as the writer for this important Bond novel. Which makes the actual result extra disappointing.

This is a book of three bits, Bond in London post a birthday celebration. Bond on a mission in Africa and Bond going solo in the US. It's a short book at just over 300 pages.

We have to remember this is about the Bond that Fleming gave us, not the film and not as depicted in the Gardiner or Benson books. Important to remember that Fleming's books were set a long time ago and did not have the pace of more modern thrillers. Having said that, Boyd commits two serious errors, he fails to get inside Bond's personality and, worse of all, he makes the book boring.

William Boyd is a brilliant writer and manages to make his characters incredibly vivid and real and he certainly knows how to move a plot. But here he fails to open up Bond as a person and almost makes him a hard drinking civil servant - no sense that he is a killer. And likewise he fails to make this a page turner or populate it with interesting characters. It's not an awful copy of Fleming's work but he fails to get to the essence of the fact that Fleming's books were actually exciting! The book has many flaws and inconsistencies and is a weak addition to the Bond heritage. I had so high hopes for this and am astonished at being so under-whelmed by this effort from such a talented author.

Tedious and Mundane
By M. MacLeod
If you're going to (allegedly) make a claim that your own writing is better than Ian Fleming's; then have the courage to retract your statement when your work fails to live up to the potential.

Solo is a James Bond adventure that will polarize fans. Some will hate to love it, or love to hate it. William Boyd was given the chance to take a beloved character and put him in a great concept and in a great adventure. Instead, Boyd creates a tedious Bond set out on a tedious mission he nor his government has no business getting involved in the first place. The actual reason for Bond going to Africa, which is explained toward the end of the book...if anyone gets that far...is kind of astonishing in an appalling way.

To be honest it left me thinking why bother? Other deals could have been made by better representatives. The idea of stopping a war seemed good on paper, but put into practice loses plausibility when it's enacted out on the pages.

Another aspect I absolutely loathed was Boyd's flagrant misuse of Bond's treatment of alcohol. Boyd has the gall to turn Bond into a full on alcoholic and I am not ok with this. Albeit there have been times where Bond has used alcohol as a crutch to keep his demons at bay, Fleming, Gardner, Benson, Faulks and even Deaver would always have Bond recover and come back to his senses. Whereas Boyd just sends his Bond right over the edge; simply because he can.

Shame on you and your arrogance William Boyd. You knew better.

It would be a great shame to let William Boyd continue on writing Bond novels. He has no grasp of the character, no idea of the world James Bond lives in. He has no business with this franchise at all. Hopefully and thankfully Solo was a one shot deal and we can all expect a much better author to take the reigns for a much much better outing.

The Wasteland Saga: Three Novels: Old Man and the Wasteland, The Savage Boy, The Road is a River, by Nick Cole

Nick Cole sends us on a suspenseful odyssey into the dark heart of post-apocalyptic America in this three-part adventure

Forty years after a devastating thermonuclear Armageddon, mankind has been reduced to sal-vaging the ruins of a broken world. In a style that's part Hemingway and part Cormac McCarthy's The Road, The Wasteland Saga chronicles the struggle of the Old Man, his granddaughter, and a mysterious boy as they try to survive the savage lands of this new American Dark Age.

With the words of the Old Man's most prized possession—a copy of Hemingway's classic The Old Man and the Sea—echoing across the wasteland, they journey into the unknown through three incredible tales of endurance and adventure in a land ravaged by destruction.

Compiled for the first time in print, The Wasteland Saga comprises Nick Cole's novels The Old Man and the Wasteland, The Savage Boy, and The Road is a River.

A strong, emotionally resonant post-apocalyptic trilogy
By TChris
The Wasteland Saga is a post-apocalyptic trilogy. The first and best of the novels, The Old Man and the Wasteland, follows a scavenger known as the Old Man as he takes a journey of redemption. Carrying a Hemingway novel and engaging in an internal monologue with the character Santiago from that novel, the Old Man is tested as he engages in conflicts with nature, with other people, and with himself. The second novel, The Savage Boy, focuses on a young man who is overcoming a disability while taking his own journey of self-discovery.

The third novel, The Road and the River, doesn't seem to have been separately published. It contains echoes of the first novel -- too many echoes, perhaps, as I was left with the feeling that I'd read this novel before. The Old Man is on a mission (rescuing people trapped in a Colorado bunker). He travels through the Wasteland. He talks to, and takes advice from, Santiago. He's introspective. He faces his fears. He perseveres. He learns to trust himself. Sacrifices are made. Good conquers evil.

The primary difference between the third novel and the first (apart from the fact that the Old Man is driving a tank instead of walking) is the addition of the Old Man's granddaughter as a traveling companion. She sees the world with the clarity of innocent eyes and helps focus the Old Man's conscience. Also joining the Old Man is the Savage Boy from the second novel. Like the granddaughter, the Savage Boy is an archetype of purity. That's good in the sense that he's admirable, but the complexity of his character that we saw in the second novel is missing here.

Perhaps due to the story's familiarity, the first half of The Road is a River lacks the intensity of the first two novels. The novel begins to build dramatic tension in the second half and it springs a surprise at the end of the Old Man's journey. The surprise isn't particularly convincing but it sets up a high-impact ending.

As was true of The Old Man and the Wasteland, the most memorable aspect of The Road is a River is the Old Man. Forty years after the bombs fell, he's forgetting the past. He can't remember what a feather duster is called, or the name of the canned stew he always made when he was a student. He wants to return to a past that no longer exists, not because he longs for its comforts (he can't imagine any home other than his little shack) but because he longs for its values. He wants life to have meaning. He wants people to have dignity. He wants people to care about each other, to behave unselfishly. He wants a better world for his granddaughter than the one into which she was born.

While not as emotionally affecting as the first novel, The Road is a River has some touching, resonant moments. Nick Cole has modeled his writing style in these novels after Hemingway, and emotional honesty was Hemingway's strength. The story could easily become maudlin, but honesty saves it. On the other hand, the "story of salvage" theme is reprised from the first novel so often that it becomes tiresome, and I could have lived without the epilog. Still, The Road is a River is a fitting end to a strong trilogy. Rating it separately, I would give The Road is a River 4 stars, while I would give The Wasteland Saga as a whole 4 1/2 stars.

Great read!
By bsd
Great series. It took me awhile to read all three books but that was by no means due to the books in any way. I just didn't find as much time as I wanted to read. The series was great overall. Without spoiling anything all I can say is WOW!!!! I was kept on the hook through the entire series. There were ever times where I thought how the heck were things going to tie together in some way but Nick always found a way.

Wow
By c grif
I regret not reading this story as soon as I purchased it. It is dark, depressing and full of challenges. If you want a fun, light, easy read, look somewhere else. Each book is better. One story is about an Old man, the next a Boy and then both are tied together for a great ending in the final story. If you are looking for a can't put down, good read, enjoy these stories!

Great summary of current state of our literature
By B. Unger
This book is not for everyone. It's not a concise summary for board or exam review. Those looking for evidence-based sticks to beat their colleagues over the head with will also frequently be disappointed. Like much of science, the anesthesia literature is often incomplete and contradictory. Still, scientifically oriented anesthesiologists will be delighted. This book provides a great summary of the current state of our frequently noisey literature, ongoing studies that hopefully will make it clearer and where expert opinion, consensus statements and guidelines, fit into the whole conversation. I love checking this book for more insight into things that my colleagues and I disagree about. Frequently we're both "right." This book makes doing my job more fun. Enjoy!

Good for What it Claims to Be
By Amazon Customer
I usually write my own spells, but picked this one up for inspiration. It's been well worth it on that count. Some of the spells I liked so much that I will be using them myself. Granted most of the spells are the usual formulaic correspondence recipie type spell (use this ingredient on this phase of the moon, turn around 3 times while chanting this, etc.)that seem like they are straight out of Charmed's book of shadows. If that kind of thing works well for you, great. Others, though, are wonderfully creative - the type of spell that I have found work best.

Silver goes into some of the psychology of spellworking, like not assuming failure if it's taking longer than you expected for your desire to manifest and how to deal with it when your luck backslides a bit. That's helpful.

I was more than a little surprised to see the book attacked so badly for not being what it didn't claim to be. There is nothing on the cover or in the introduction to suggest that it is a book on advanced magical work or a treatise on the "true" meaning of Wicca (which, BTW, has as a many varieties as there are denominations of Christianity). It claims to be a spell book, and that is what it is.

My advice to anyone considering this book is that you can get something out of it if you want to. It's a real shame when people let their own bloated egos get in the way of finding the good in things.

Very helpful...
By Anne of Downers Grove
This little book is very helpful for bringing positive abundance in your life.

It's not a book that tells you: 'do these spells and you'll be RICH!' That's not what it's about at all. Rather, it's a book on getting your (financial) life into balance. Which is certainly not a bad thing! After all - it's difficult to focus on spiritual matters when you're constantly stressed over finances.

I suggest to the bashers that they actually READ the book instead just assuming what it's about. (Gee, what a concept!)

A helpful read
By Traci
Everyone could use a little abundance in their life and that's what Silver strives to show her readers. The book is written from a slew of spells and practical advice that she used when she was struggling with financial difficulties.

She has practical advice along with spiritual advice, so readers can begin to stop their debts, tackle existing debts and do something on a higher plane to help bring in money and pay off the debts that seem to hang over their heads.

Of course, if you're really that strapped for cash, you probably shouldn't be buying this book (especially not new). You'd be better off finding spells and other magical information online, or, buy the book used from the marketplace which would be the better idea. You won't regret it.

Jason Ryan snagged his cell phone from the kitchen table, then fumbled to answer before the caller hung up. The muscles in his jaw tightened as he checked the ID. Great. So the long lost prodigal had finally decided to check in.

He took the call, skipping any formalities with his best friend and business partner. "Where are you, Garrett?"

"Listen, I just have a minute. Some things have come up, and I…I need a few more days off."

"A few more days to do what?" Jason shoved the last file into his briefcase then slammed the lid shut. He didn't have time for more of Garrett's excuses. Not today.

"I can't tell you." His friend's voice faded in and out with the choppy connection.

"You can't or won't tell me? Come on, Garrett. I've put up with your excuses for weeks, and now you won't even answer my phone calls or respond to my emails. What am I supposed to do?"

"You don't understand—"

"No…" Jason let out a loud humph and started pacing the kitchen's mosaic tiled floor. "You're the one who doesn't understand, Garrett. I need you here. I just finished our final analysis of Simon's company and discovered another million dollars' worth of misappropriated funds. Do you realize how much work we have ahead of us?"

"I'm sorry, for everything, but I've gotten involved in something…something serious."

"Tell me what's wrong, and I'll help you fix it," he insisted, trying to reason with his friend.

"I don't think this can be fixed."

Jason rubbed the back of his neck. He could read the aggravation in his friend's voice, but he wasn't buying the excuses anymore. They might have become close friends over the past seven years, but even that didn't make up for Garrett's recent erratic behavior. Or the fact he'd been AWOL from his job the past two weeks. "Convince me why I shouldn't terminate you."

"Because I need you to trust me."

Jason frowned. As far as he was concerned, trust wasn't one of his friend's fortes at the moment. "It's a woman, isn't it?"

"Yes. No. It's not what you think."

Jason felt the last thread of patience snap. Garrett's record with women was worse than his own. While a fourth date always seemed one date too close to commitment for Jason, Garrett rarely got past a second date before he was playing the field again.

"Come on, Garrett…tell me what's going on." Jason rummaged through the kitchen cabinet for a bottle of aspirin to take the edge off the headache that had been brewing all morning. "Your mother called me yesterday, worried sick because she hadn't heard from you in over a week. Plus, I'm covering for you at work, even though I can't even tell anyone where you are or what you're doing because I don't know myself."

"Like I said, I can't tell you. Not yet, anyway."

"Then at least tell me where you are?"

There was a slight pause on the line. Jason downed the tablets with a glass of tap water. He set the empty glass in the sink, still awaiting an answer. "Garrett?"

"I'm in Pacific Cove, but nothing is secure…not on-line…not this call…."

Garrett's voice faded away.

"Garrett? Can you hear me?"

Even though the small coastal town was only twenty miles from his father's cabin, he hadn't been to Pacific Cove for years. What in the world was Garrett doing there?

"The connection is…bad." Garrett's voice returned. "I'll call you again in a few days. I've got to go."

"Garrett, wait—" The line went dead.

Jason braced his hands against the sides of the kitchen sink and stared off into the distance at Mt. Hood shimmering in the morning sunlight. If Garrett was involved with a woman, why all the secrecy? Nothing made sense. He grabbed his car keys and briefcase and headed out the front door of his downtown Portland condo. Knowing Garrett, he was sitting at a beachside cafe eating crab cakes and oyster shooters with some girl he'd fallen for.

Some dire emergency. More like another one of Gar-rett's romantic liaisons. Or at least it had better be.

Four days later

Four-year-old Lauryn tugged on her mother's hand, her mouth drawn into a deep frown.

"What's wrong, sweetie?" Danielle Corbett followed her daughter's gaze past the foot-tall sandcastle wall they'd just finished. Another few minutes and the structure would completely disappear into the shoreline.

"Someone's out there."

Lauryn pointed to the swirling gray-blue waters of the Pacific Ocean dancing beneath the yellow sunlight that glistened off clusters of jagged rocks.

Something orange flashed in the water.

Danielle's gaze shifted to the right, and she squinted against the glare of the water. Another flash of color rose then disappeared. She scanned the deserted shoreline for help. Mr. Johnson walked his golden retriever most mornings. Reagan Garland jogged on the days he worked the night shift. Today, there was no one.

Grabbing Lauryn's hand, she ran toward her mother who had just finished gathering up their picnic supplies and handed her the beach bag. "Mom, there is a swimmer in distress. I need you to call 911 then take Lauryn with you up to the restaurant. Send someone for help, then wait for me there."

Not waiting for a response, Danielle hurried back into the surf, her tennis shoes soaking up the water and squishing beneath her sock-clad toes. Ignoring the Pacific Ocean's frigid temperature, she kept her focus on the figure as his head emerged gasping for air then vanished into the white foam.

A spray of water splashed her sun-chapped lips leaving behind its salty residue. Wiping the back of her hand against her mouth, Danielle trudged deeper into the ocean until she was only a few feet from the struggling body.

In an instant, he was gone.

Her toes barely touching the sandy bottom, Danielle searched the murky waters. Turning a full 360, her heart pounded frantically. Tufts of dark hair appeared at the surface. Diving into the water, she opened her eyes and aimed in the direction of the body. An eternity seemed to pass before the form appeared. This time he no longer struggled against the waves. An orange shirt hung off one shoulder. Heavy jeans hung like weights on his legs. Grabbing his shoulders, Danielle turned against the strengthening tide and headed for the surface.

Stay calm. Don'tpanic.

The emergency training course she'd taken last summer flashed before her. She took a deep breath and struggled to keep her head above the waves.

Pulling the man toward her, Danielle rested the back of his head against her chest. He lay limp in her arms. Please God, don't let me be too late. She checked the beach. It was empty.

One second at a time. One stroke at a time.

Pulling her free arm against the waves, Danielle pushed against the water until her feet touched the sand beneath her. The weight of the man grew heavy in her arms, but at least he wasn't fighting against her.

Danielle shivered, willing her body to keep swimming toward the shore, but even her training for this year's local triathlon hadn't prepared her for this. Underwater waves pushed against her legs. The sand sank beneath her feet making progress difficult. Ten more feet. She could see the edge of the water now. Five more feet.

Finally collapsing onto the wet sand, Danielle dragged the man far enough away from the incoming tide so that she could work unhindered. She looked to the deserted shoreline for help, worried that she didn't have time to wait for the paramedics to arrive, then gently shook his body. She felt for a pulse beneath his jawline and checked his breathing.

Nothing.

Danielle fought the alarm that rose in her chest as she placed the heel of her hand in the center of his chest and started chest compressions. A lock of dark hair rested against his forehead. Freckles scattered across his nose and cheeks. A small scar crossed his left eyebrow. He was somebody's son, brother, husband….

Lord, I need a miracle.

Danielle glanced up and drew out a labored sigh of relief at the man running toward her. Athletic build, dark blond hair… Pale blue eyes met hers a moment later as he knelt on the sand across from her.

"What happened?"

Danielle heard the urgency in his voice as she tried to catch her breath. Surely she was seeing things. Jason Ryan?

His gaze shifted from her face, to the body, then back to her again. "Danielle? Tell me what happened," he said, his expression full of questions.

There was no time to process the familiar features…or the ten years that had passed since she'd last seen him. "I pulled him out of the water. I've tried CPR, but he doesn't have a pulse, and he's not breathing." Danielle felt her own heart pounding inside her chest. "My mother called 911 and has gone to the restaurant to get help."

He caught her gaze, then grabbed her hands, turning them over palms up. Danielle felt the air rush out of her lungs. They were covered with blood. "I don't think he drowned, Danielle. He's been shot."

Jason fought the panic as he tried to process the blood on Danielle's hands…and the fact that he'd just found Garrett. But if there was any chance of saving his friend, they both were going to have to keep their focus.

Needing to find the source of the injury, he turned his friend on to his side where the blood had seeped onto the sand. Two holes punctuated his back, leaving dark circles of blood behind. No pulse. No heartbeat. A sickening feeling flooded through him. Garrett was dead.

"We can still save him." Sirens wailed in the distance as Danielle knelt in front of Garrett's lifeless body and began the chest compressions again.

"It's too late." Jason grabbed her hands a second time and pulled them against his chest. "There isn't anything you could have done to save him. There isn't anything anyone can do. He's already gone, Danielle."

Already gone.

How had this happened? He stared at the lifeless body of his friend, then stood up, his legs shaking at the realization. His last conversation with Garrett raced through his mind as he walked a few paces toward the sea trying to process what had just occurred.

"Jason?"

"I knew him." He turned back toward her, guilt pounding through him. "I came to Pacific Cove to find him. He's a friend…my business partner."

"I'm so sorry." Danielle looked up at him with those achingly familiar, big brown eyes. "I can't imagine losing someone this way."

"I didn't take him seriously when he told me he was in trouble." Jason knelt back down onto the sand across from her. "Now he's dead."

Danielle stood twenty yards from the body—dead and lying in a body bag—she'd pulled from the ocean. The early afternoon tide swept back and forth across the rocky shoreline, sand flowers fluttered in the wind and seagulls fought for scraps of food beside her, but she barely saw any of it. Instead, her arms were crossed tightly against her chest as she answered the barrage of questions from one of the police officers, while another officer talked to Jason. Where had she found the body? Had he been alive when she first saw him? Had there been any other witnesses at the scene?

Danielle shivered in the cold, trying to get her mind to focus, while absorbing the shock that a man was dead. Yes, she'd found him floating in the water. She thought he'd been alive when she pulled him out, but then they'd found the blood. There had been no heartbeat, no sign of breathing. And no, she hadn't seen anyone else on the beach at the time of the rescue except for Jason.

The officer tapped his pen against his notes. "One last question. Had you ever seen the victim before today?"

Danielle shook her head, wanting the interview to be over. Wishing she could erase the blank stare of the dead man's eyes looking back at her, the dark red stains on his back and the fact that her hands had been covered with his blood.

"Mrs. Corbett?"

"I'm sorry. No…I've never seen him before."

She barely heard the officer's instructions through her deafening thoughts. One of the officers would be in touch if they needed any more information. If she thought of anything else in the meantime, she needed to call the precinct. She gave him her contact information, then started walking away from the shoreline, wanting to get as far away as she could from the crime scene.

"Danielle?" Jason caught up to her. "Are you okay?"

"No, not really." Her clothes and shoes were soaked and she was shivering from the cold, but none of that seemed to matter. A man was dead.

"Do you need a ride home?"

She paused along the sandy trail leading toward the restaurant. She hadn't even stopped to think that far ahead.

"One of the paramedics let me use his phone to call my mom while he checked me out. I told her to take Lauryn home. If they were to see me soaking wet and shaken up like this, they'd both worry."

Besides that, the last thing she wanted was for either of them to have witnessed today's tragedy.

"Who's Lauryn?"

Danielle looked up into his turbulent blue eyes. She'd almost forgotten he didn't know. How much time had passed since the night she'd handed him her engagement ring back? Nine…ten years ago. It seemed like a lifetime. "A lot can change in ten years. Lauryn's my daughter."

"So you're married?"

She bent down and picked up a white sand dollar half-buried in the ground and started brushing off the sand. "Quinton died in a motorcycle accident two years ago."

"I'm sorry."

She let her thumb rub across the broken edge of the shell. Some days she felt the same way. Broken…defeated. Other days she felt as if she'd finally found her way. Today she wasn't sure where she stood. "It's something I'm learning to live with."

"Listen, let me go with you up to the restaurant so you can dry off and get something warm to drink, then I'll drive you home. You've got to be chilled to the bone. They have a fireplace in the dining room."

A shiver spread through her as he spoke, and she nodded. Late October meant the average temperature on the coast barely rose above sixty degrees. Being wet in the wind made the cold even worse.

She turned around to take one last look at the body before they headed toward the restaurant. Officers and paramedics finished working the scene, along with the medical examiner who had recently arrived. The reality of what had just transpired hit her like a winter storm beating against the Pacific's rugged coastline. When her knees buckled beneath her, Jason caught her and drew her into his arms.

She let him hold her for a moment. Her head rested against his chest as she breathed in the smell of salt and seaweed, finding an unexpected security in his presence. He had been that for her once. Years before she'd even met Quinton.

"I'm sorry." She stepped back, suddenly self-conscious of her display of emotion to a man she'd purposely forgotten. "I just don't think I've ever been so scared. Everything happened so fast…. I thought I could save him. I wanted so badly to save him."

"Hey, you don't have any reason to be sorry." He brushed away the tear sliding down her cheek with the back of his hand. "What you experienced today was traumatic."

An Exciting Read that will Keep You Guessing.
By Shirley Corder
Stolen Identity is a story about a widowed mother who gets caught up in a dangerous game when her identity is stolen. Danielle Corbit doesn't understand why someone would want to steal her identity. A single mother running a small business--nothing special, right? But after discovering a dead body on the Oregon coastline, she's attacked by a dangerous hacker who will stop at nothing to frame her. Only her former fiancé, Jason Ryan, is willing to help.

Years ago Danielle broke his heart, and Jason doesn't want to get involved with her again. Yet he cannot walk away from a woman in need. He'll do anything to protect her from their unseen adversary. But is there enough time to work together and untangle this twisted web of fraud and deception?

I loved every minute of this story. The suspense was enough to keep me reading and even wanting to pray for those involved, without keeping me awake at night. I loved the tense situations without the violence and gore we often read in modern novels. I enjoyed being able to like both the hero and heroine while realising that there was a tension between them that I didn't understand until later in the story.

I found the characters well developed and the story line good even though somewhat alarming when I realised how easily the situation can happen. It surely serves as a warning to us all to safeguard our identity as far as we can.

I bought this book after interviewing Lisa Harris on my website. The story sounded so good that I had to buy the book and read it. I wasn't disappointed. Thank you Lisa for a great read!

Second chance works
By Kindle Customer
I liked the storyline, the characters, and the absence of cursing. It shows a book can be good without sex and bravado that goes with it. The suspense is there and the author did a great job. I recommend this book. Enjoy.
