Hidden deep in the rugged Scottish Highlands lies the Highland Targe, an ancient relic guarded for centuries by clan MacAlpin. It is said the Targe can shield the heart of the Highlands from invaders and now, as part of his plan to crush the Scottish rebellion, the English king wants the Targe for himself...
Rowan MacGregor, orphaned niece to the chief of the MacAlpins and the rock her family depends upon, is worried. With the dwindling health of her aunt, the Guardian of the Targe, the protections that have kept the clan safe and prosperous are fading, and the new Guardian, one of her cousins, has yet to be chosen. Rowan wants nothing more than to see the clan protected again, but when it seems that will never happen, she despairs—even when a handsome and charming stranger comes to her aid.
Nicholas fitz Hugh is not what he seems. Half-English, half-Scottish, he turned his back on his Scottish heritage early in his life, giving his loyalty to England instead. Now he is a talented and cunning spy charged with finding and stealing the Highland Targe for his king.
But when Nicholas finds himself falling for the bonny Rowan and wanting to protect the family she holds so dear, he is forced to choose between his king’s will and his own: Will he betray his king and his mission? Or will he turn his back on the woman he has come to love?

"Laurin Wittig has a gift for writing fresh, romantic, passionate Scottish medievals. Highlander Betrayed is one of the most compelling medieval historical romances I have ever read. It has everything: romance, smooth writing, an unpredictable plot, and a wee bit of the paranormal. I loved it!" —New York Times bestselling author Colleen Gleason
"...a great love story, complete with betrayal and magic...a real page turner." —Linda Hays-Gibbs, The Romance Reviews, 5 Stars
About the Author
Laurin Wittig was marked by her Scottish heritage at birth, when her parents chose her uniquely spelled name from a plethora of Scottish family monikers. At ten, she attended her first MacGregor clan gathering and her first ceilidh, where she danced with the hereditary chieftain of the clan. At eleven, she visited Scotland, and it has fueled her imagination ever since. She studied anthropology at Brown University before launching a career in the computer industry. But as a voracious reader, it was only natural she would become a storyteller too. She penned her first book when her children were young, writing whenever they napped. Her novel The Devil of Kilmartin won the National Readers' Choice Award for short historical romance, and all of her books have appeared on the Amazon Top 100 Historical Romance and Top 100 Historical Fiction lists. Wittig lives in southeastern Virginia with her two children, her husband, and their rescue Eskie.

Action-packed, Mystical, and an All-Around Great Read
By Past Romance
This. Book. Was. Fantastic.
I consider myself a fan of this author and have read all of her previous work. HIGHLANDER BETRAYED is yet another in her long string of spellbinding reads. Laurin Wittig carefully weaves her tales of love and romance into a rich tapestry of adventure, bravery, legend and lore. I just love each and every one of them!
In this book, which is the first of the Guardians of the Targe triology, she transplants readers to the Scotland of 1307. England's King Edward wishes to crush the Scot's spirit by stealing the Highland Targe, a relic believed to act as a sheild protecting the Highlanders. He sends his best and most trusted spy, Nicholas Fitz Hugh, to retrieve or destroy the Targe. Half English and half Scot, and a man with a gift for playing a variety of roles, Nicholas seems a very likely choice. But how will he feel about channeling his inner Highlander and returning to the land and people that spurned him, the bastard son of a hated Sassanatch?
Nicholas assumes the role of a wandering Highlander seeking his way home and makes his way into Scotland and into the path of Rowan MacGregor. Pulling her to safety away from a collapsing wall gives him just the entrance he seeks to the inside of the clan's walls. The walls that likely hide the Targe within. Rowan herself could be an important tool he could use to gain the information he needs to complete the King's mission.
Rowan is startled by her reaction to the stranger. His touch is oddly comforting in her world that is rapidly spinning out of control (literally, you will see when you read the book!) Could he truly be a man for her? Can he be trusted? Why was he just outside their walls at just the right moment?
Nicholas is a fascinating hero. He starts out as the enemy, the spy who seeks to destroy Rowan and her clan all in exchange for power, wealth, and the glory of his king. But then he begins to remember his Highland heritage, and finds himself feeling at home for the first time in his life. His journey is touching and powerful. His struggle is best summed up by this passage, which is one of my favorites, from the book:
"Damned weakness. He hadn't been bothered by a conscience in a long time, only doing what was best for himself, and the king, which was, after all, in Nicholas's best interest. Even in this assignment he let the king dictate his conscience, or the withered thing that might have once been his conscience."
There's a mystical element to this book as well, as the reader follows the story of the Highland Targe and it's legend and powers. Normally, I'm not a big fan of paranormal elements, but this novel carefully mingles it into the tale in a way that it adds greater depth and emotion to the story instead of being just a sideshow. It's an integral part of the history, the culture, and the clan.
This is a very enjoyable Highland romance that will keep you up turning pages into the wee hours of the night and daydreaming the next day about a world of wee beasties, weans, plaids, magical stones, legendary powers....and men weilding claymores. :)

Highlander Betrayed
By Lindsey
When Highlander Betrayed begins we meet Nicholas, who is the Master Spy for King Edward of England. Obsessed with the need for power and superiority, the king tasks Nicholas with finding and stealing the Highland Targe, a relic which is said to protect the Highlands from attack. Tasked with Nicholas is Archie, another spy for the King, and together they set out to steal the Targe at all costs.
In the Highlands lives a clan who has the Targe in it's possession, and among the clan is Rowan, a young girl who has long grown to love the family who took her in after the unusual death of her parents. Soon she meets Nicholas, who seems to appear out of nowhere to save her and her cousin from an accident, and she begins to feel things for him that she has never felt before. But can she trust this stranger or will he prove to be a danger to all she and her clan hold dear? Will betrayal come for her or the King? And will she be strong enough to do all fate has in store for her to protect her clan?
This book was an interesting read for me. I love reading of the Highlands, and I was excited to see how the author would write about them. Personally, I thought this book started out slowly, and it was hard to get into the story. I was not particularly a fan of Nicholas, but once he met Rowen, I enjoyed reading about their romance, and then their trials and tribulations as a result of the King's quest for power.
The conflict in the story was written very well, and I enjoyed the family elements. However, I must say that at times I was very frustrated with Rowan's family and their attitude towards her for something that she had no control over. I wanted to reach through the pages and shake them for their behavior.
Overall, though slow in the beginning, I was pulled into the story and the last 3/4 of the book flew by. I was excited to see how the book would end, and now that I do know, I would definitely consider continuing the series with book 2.
Please note that I received this book for free through the Goodreads First Reads program, and this is my honest review of Laurin Wittig's book Highlander Betrayed.

Breathtaking Scottish adventure!
By Nicole Laverdure
Again, a beautiful Scottish medieval romance as I love them.
I fell in love with this book HIGHLANDER BETRAYED written by Laurin Wittig.
It is the first book of her Guardians of the Targe trilogy!
This is the first time that a read a book by this author and to my surprise,
I discovered that she is truly a storyteller that kept my interest until the end.
The Highland Targe is an ancient relic guarded for centuries by the MacAlpins.
I loved her characters, but mainly Rowan and Nicholas. Rowan is the niece of the chief of the MacAlpins and of her aunt, the Guardian of the Targe. Being loyal to her clan and to Scotland, Rowan will do everything to keep the Targe safe. Nicholas, of Scottish heritage, is instead loyal to England. Being a spy for the King of England, he receives a mission to retrieve the Targe at any costs. However, when he meets her, sparks will flare between the two! What will happen when he discovers the relic? Will Nicholas feel torn between his love for Rowan and his loyalty to the King? Will their love be strong enough to survive a treason and betrayal? Will the Targe be kept in the Highlands or England? You will have to read this book to discover the answers.
I loved her other characters Scotia, Jeannette, Kenneth.
Ms. Wittig is truly a great writer and a talented storyteller worth discovering. I love her style of writing!
She is an author of medieval romance full of tenderness, love and adventure. I devoured this book!
