Ben Aaronovitch writes tie-in novels and TV scripts, and wrote the screenplays for the Seventh Doctor episodes Battlefield and Remembrance of the Daleks. He is the author of a series of audio dramas based on TV's Blake's 7, as well as the acclaimed Rivers of London series. He also works as a bookseller.

A classic story with the classic Doctor Who monster

The only novelization of a transmitted episode to make it into the 50th anniversary collection. This is considered by many to be Sylvester McCoy's best story as the Doctor. The novelization was considered one of the best of its type as well, so it is no surprise that it was selected.
I never thought the episode Remembrance of the Daleks was as brilliant as everyone else. To me is seemed like a lot of repetitive action with no great dialogue, and the mysterious little girl was better in concept than execution on screen.
I feel the same way about the book, although it does expand on the inner life of the 7th Doctor and Ace and, more importantly, gives you a glimpse of the thought process behind the Dalek's behavior. I found the novelization to still be too much scene description, although this novelization does it better than most. If you liked this episode, you will love the book. If you are indifferent to the episode (or have never seen it) it is worth a read mostly because it fleshes out the relationship between the Doctor and Ace in a way that we didn't get to see on screen since their time was cut short.

A classic Who book, back in print!

Almost every serial from the original television run of Doctor Who was adapted into book form, many years ago. Most of these adaptations were hampered by simple writing and thin characterization, and failed to improve on the original TV stories. But "Remembrance of the Daleks" bucked that particular trend. In translating his TV script into book form, writer Ben Aaronovitch expanded and improved upon his story, adding considerable depth to his characters and pizzazz to his actions scenes. The result? Arguably, one of the best Who books ever written.
To put it another way...this book is really cool. It provides fascinating insight into how the Daleks think and fight, it explores the ancient history of Gallifrey (the Doctor's home planet), and it grounds the human characters with backstories involving World War II. The prose is brisk and full of fun details. And the fight scenes are both exciting and easy to follow. (See, it is possible to do "action" in a book!)
I suppose that a few aspects of the story have not aged well. The Doctor's ruthless campaign to destroy the Daleks is perhaps a little disturbing -- though I can understand why he would want to proactively attack the Daleks, after centuries of just reacting to their aggression. More problematic, to me, is the way the Doctor just pops in out of nowhere and starts bossing around the military, which strains credibility quite a bit.
Still, this story is great, albeit a little macho by Doctor Who standards. I'm glad it's finally been reprinted, since the original edition is a few decades old and hard to come by. Whether you're a fan of old Who or new, this is worth picking up...you'll learn a few new things about the Daleks, at the very least.

Daleks rise from the junkyard

The Doctor and Ace arrive on Earth in 1963, where the Doctor has unfinished business - left over from his stay in Shoreditch with his granddaughter Susan. He is setting a trap for the Daleks - but why are there more than one group of Daleks on 1960s Earth?
A great new start to the Seventh Doctor's second season sees the Doctor becoming far more complex and assured, and uses the English army and its scientific advisers to get to what he wants. But the two Dalek factions are rather more than he bargained for, and there are several more complicated factors in the story.
Ben Aaronovitch wrote this fabulous story for TV, and betters it with the novelisation. He expands considerably on the original story, establishing some elements that survived considerably beyond the book, and making a very readable addition to the Doctor Who range of books.
This is also the best Dalek story for a long time, and should be appreciated. Certainly worth you going out of your way to find!
