Making this Reader Smile!

I'm a Lynne Marshall fan, so I dove into "Making the Surgeon Smile" with high expectations, and I wasn't disappointed. New nurse Polly Seymour is a self-admitted "people pleaser," but she's no pushover. She's a refreshing, believable combination of strong and vulnerable.
When she encounters Dr. Johnny Griffin, the hot, hunky, and highly intimidating Director of NYC's Angel's Pediatric Hospital's Department of Orthopedics, she sees the same stand-offish boss the rest of the department fears and respects. She also sees a gorgeous man with an elusive, incredibly addictive smile. But Polly's determined to ignore the inappropriate attraction to her boss, and pierce this guy's tough exterior in an effort to improve the morale of the entire department.
Dr. Griffin's reserved nature stems from a past tragedy that took a huge personal toll. Yet he can't withstand Polly's relentless positivity--especially when he learns her life hasn't been all sunshine and roses either, but, unlike him, she's chosen not to let the tough times she's endured kill her sense of joy. He develops a healthy respect, and an uncomfortable attraction, to nurse Polly.
With the chemistry smoldering between these two, it's only a matter of time before smoke leads to fire. It's hard to say just who seduces who, but the scene had me fanning myself! The fallout is where things get REALLY interesting. Fate throws this odd couple a huge curveball. Can Johnny and Polly step up to the plate, put aside their pasts, and focus on the present...and future? Watching their journey is alternately heart-wrenching and heartwarming, but incredibly real. There's no fairy godmother or magic potion. These two earn their happy ending, and I was smiling through tears as I read it.

In Making The Surgeon Smile by Lynn Marshall Johnny Griffin is a talented surgeon who buries himself in his work. Loved by his patients, but not so much by his staff. At one time Johnny Griffin had everything. A beautiful wife he loved and adored and a baby on the way. And then the unthinkable happened 9/11. As a first responder he was there trying to help rescue his wife who was trapped in The World Trade Center. After more than a decade he has never moved on emotionally from his lost.
Polly Seymour knows how it feels to be unwanted since she lost her Mother at the young age of 6. She was shuffled from Aunt's and Uncle's homes and never felt truly loved. Then betrayed by her boyfriend, she sets her sights on NYC. A new state, a new job and away from gossip. Her first day on the job and she literally runs right into Johnny Griffin. This little burst of energy is just what Johnny needed to shake him back to life. She brings such joy and happiness to the hospital ward. While Polly try's to bring Joy all around her, she also stands up for herself and is by no means a pushover.
After one night of intense passion between these two, He is having regrets, he feels he is too old for her, he is her boss and part of him feels he is betraying his late wife. Not because of having sex but because of the feelings he is having for Polly. But soon this one night of passion brings a second chance of having a family.
I must admit my emotions were all over the place after ready this Amazing book by Lynne Marshall. I lost track of how many times I cried over this story. It just really grabbed at the heart strings. Just as you think both are getting a HEA something else happens. And I honestly can't decide which part made be cry the most 9/11, the hospital ER scene, the nightstand scene or The ending.
I did have one question about the story. What happened to Mr. Caldara?
The author was kind enough to send me a copy of this book, but I also purchased this book for my kindle. I highly recommend this book!

The Surgeon Smiled and So Did I!

Making the Surgeon Smile is another triumph for author Lynne Marshall. I was extremely happy to receive an advanced copy of this lovely little hardcover book. And what a gorgeous cover! The NYC setting was a wonderful read and caused many a smile as I ambled through familiar streets.
I've always enjoyed the emotional level Ms. Marshall reaches in her medical stories. Having worked in the hospital setting as an RN, and dated my share of doctors, I recognize the author's take on the forbidden work-related romance and the secrecy involved. There is nothing like a hospital grapevine for juicy news delivered in a flash. : )
This is a story of healing. Both main characters carry pain from the past. One has chosen to move forward putting a positive spin on everything that comes her way, and the other cannot get past the pain, so he has shut down emotionally. They both have much to learn on this journey.
There were times that I wanted to shake Johnny for his bad behavior, for his moodiness, for his coldness. But that's the sign of a good writer: one who can make me feel, one who can cause me to feel indignant, one who makes me stay the course because I know she will redeem the character by story end. The glimmers of the man Dr. John Griffin once was become apparent in the one area where he lets down his guard, and that is in patient care. He loves his patients.
Polly, although superficially sunny and bright, has a deep pain she carries, but has chosen to always look on the brighter side of life. There is a thread of strength that runs below the surface of her cheerfulness, and she knows not to give up on Johnny. She is the perfect person to help him to unwind, to let go of the pain, to move forward and create a new life. If only he can see that!
When these two finally get their HEA, it is well deserved and very satisfying. I gave the story five stars for the emotional component: for the author's ability to make me care.
