Comprehensive and engrossing

This book provides a comprehensive and engrossing introduction into the mysteries, glories and vulnerabilities of our oh-so-vital organ. The author's broad knowledge and elegantly cautious tone combine to inspire interest and trust in the reader. The opening chapter, on the history of early discoveries in cardiac physiology and in diagnostic methods is delightful. It prepares the reader to be all the more appreciative of the rest of the book. The organization of the subsequent chapters makes it easy for a layman like myself to learn about the heart and about heart disease in a systematic, satisfying way. The discussion of various breakthroughs manages to be exciting without being sensationalistic. The author remains throughout as much a humanist as a scientist - or, rather, he makes his science all the more credible and interesting that he views it as part and parcel of a great humanistic journey of self-discovery. This is a book which every household should have, as it answers a myriad questions with calm, caution and authority. It will save lives. I recommend it strongly.

How can a book about heart disease be enjoyable, creative and relevant?
This is the one!
Chapter by chapter the mysteries of the heart and heart disease unfold. The author takes you on a journey starting with the history of Cardiology, through the heart's functions, disorders, disease, treatments ,the prevention of heart disease and finally what the future holds.
The information is presented in a way for a layman like me to clearly understand. The medical terminology is decoded.
I have gained incredible knowledge by reading this book. The heart is everything.

A well written discussion of how hearts work, their diseases and malfunctions, and what the medical profession can durrently do about these problems. A non-medical person will understand this book, but it is not dumbed down.
