About the Author
Rafael Yglesias (b. 1954) is a master American storyteller whose career began with the publication of his first novel, Hide Fox, and All After, at seventeen. Through four decades Yglesias has produced numerous highly acclaimed novels, including Fearless, which was adapted into the film starring Jeff Bridges and Rosie Perez. He lives on New York City’s Upper East Side.

Interesting for Fans of This Author

I chose to read this first book from this author after becoming entranced with some of his more recent works; Dr. Neruda's Cure for Evil, and Fearless. Although the book drags at points, it is a true look into the psyche of a brilliant but lost adolescent who seeks to find his place in the world.
An autobiographical aspect is almost always present with this writer, and this first work is no exception. Ygelesias was only 15 when he penned this novel, and the bulk of the characters are teenagers. The protagonist's name RAUL suggests a kinship with his own Rafael, and the irony was not lost on me that RAUL's father is RAFAEL.
I look forward to seeing more work from Yglesias, since the time between novels has become too long.

An Inspirational read

At the time I read this I was 16, running my own theatre group, making my first film and failing at school with a Greek chorus of adults perpetually telling me why someone of such little experience could not do what I was doing. This book utterly captivated and seemed to understand exactly how a teenager, frustrated and impatient to express themselves, felt about almost everything. Witty, incisive, madly brilliant and brilliantly mad, Iglesias had started already at 16 to tap into exactly what it is like to feel like a freak of nature, destined for an artistic life if only the uninspiring environment would play ball. Faced with the usual classroom bully cliches, Raoul just flips his cloak and poses dramatically on the stage in the performance of his own life that is always playing in his head. A wonderful book that excited with its precocity and still does. We all look back at out first efforts and say like the Irish farmer asked for directions, 'well, I wouldn't start from here', but Iglesias has every reason to be proud of who he was when he wrote it and of how he described his experience. Juvenelia of the highest form.
