Torn between his desire to protect Freeman and his obligation to safeguard the Marines' reputation, Tierney must come to terms with the diminishment of his faith in a system he had once idealized.  Dubus's sole novel, The Lieutenant exposes the culture and politics of the United States military at the start of the Vietnam War, and reveals the common insecurities of the men whose lives were defined in its bounds. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Andre Dubus including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

Within its peacetime military genre, it tells the truth.

Within its peacetime military genre, this novel tells the truth about the young Marine Corps officer's life. He's under a senior Navy officer's command on an aircraft carrier stationed off Japan, when some enlisted men act pranks that can suggest homosexual associations. The Lieutenant is held responsible, as he remembers why he came to the Corps and what it means to him. Dubus has written many more successful books since this one, but this suggests some of his major themes.

Calls for reprinting
By A Customer
The book is a page-turner and a must read for old sailors and Marines. On every large ship you'll find the bullies and the bullied Dubus so eloquently describes in these pages. The book deserves to be reissued, especially in light of recent controversies concerning gays in the military.

Good Read!!
By zinger
This book is not an action thriller by any means but is a well wwritten account of a young officer placed in a postion of command. It is about the dilema he faces and how he deals with the command decisions he is forced to make. It also points out some of the problems of superior officers who are not working with their troops best intrest first but their own. I would recommend this book.
