About the Author
Known as Brazil's first professional writer, Aluísio Tancredo Gonçalves de Azevedo (1857-1913) was the talented son of a Portuguese diplomat. Azevedo enrolled in Brazil's National School of Fine Arts and drew charactures for the newspapers of the day. But his father's sudden death in 1878 forced him to support his mother and family through his writing. While his first works were formulaic works written to guarantee his family's survival, he soon turned to works that analyzed society, from the degrading conditions of the tenements to the exploitations of slavery. His best works are O Cortiço (1890), Casa de Pensão (1884) and O Mulato (1881). Despite gaining a fair living from 1882 through 1895 from his writing, he suddenly retired from writing novels in 1895 to begin a diplomatic career, rising to become Brazil's consul in Asuncion, Paraguay. He died at his last post, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1913.

Wonderful book, BUT I gave 3 stars because it's MISSING 4 chapters!!

About this kindle edition:
Along the book I found around 6 typo erros in the book, simple change of one letters in a word that don't really harm the reading experience (if you are a native portuguese speaking). But, after finish the book, I looked for it on wikipedia, and there I discovered that there were some things that I did not read. Looking at the book index I found that it's missing chapter 13 to 16 (XIII to XVI). In a certain way it was a relief because during my reading I had to unsuccessfully go back to try to find how someone was killed and things like that. Waiting anxiously for the inclusion of the missing chapters!

Durante a leitura eu achei cerca de 6 erros de digitação, troca de uma letra por outra na palavra inteira, o que não prejudica muito a leitura. Porém, depois de terminar o livro, procurei no wikipedia e descobri que lá havia informações que eu não havia lido. Checando o índice do livro percebi que está faltando 4 capítulos(13 A 16 - XIII a XVI). De certa maneira foi um alívio porque ao longo da leitura eu tive que voltar para tentar achar como alguém morreu e coisas assim. Realmente espera que os capítulos sejam incluídos!

Como é bom viajar no tempo com estas literaturas de domínio público! Como é repulsivo o final deste livro, voluntariamente é claro. Final aliás que deixa meio no vácuo, uma sensação de que 'cortaram o rabo do cachorro'. Novamente proposital é claro.
O autor é claramente abolicionista. Eles consegue injetar ódio ao escravismo mostrando um episódio revoltante. O próprio debater sobre se escravismo é certo ou não já causa repulsa.
As bases de nosso país esviçeradas com muita habilidade.
Nâo tem como não amar este livro. Amor, ódio, traição, traição conjugal, inveja, egoismo, soberba, hipocrisia... tudo isso mexendo com os brios de quem quer que o leia suas páginas.
