From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-Walker and McKuen believe that real style comes from dressing to show the world the real you. This title is a mix of fashion advice and self-help that encourages readers to feel confident to express themselves through their clothing and accessories. The authors have divided fashion/style into five main groups-classic, natural, romantic, dramatic, and trend tracker. The quizzes and text help readers identify their Fashion Persona. While the advice is solid, readers may be disappointed by the dense text. Fashion is all about the visual, and the black-and-white illustrations do little to show readers what the Fashion Personas actually look like, and many girls may not have enough real-world experience to be able to visualize what the authors mean. Small sections on closet organization are good, as is the section on money and fashion. Overall, though, the presentation suffers from an unflattering design and a lack of color.-Elaine Baran Black, Georgia Public Library Service, Atlantaα(c) Copyright 2013. Good confidence builder for a middle-schooler
By M. Cross
This book is good at explaining fashion to young girls. I was worried it would pressure girls to fit one kind of mold but it is really nice about including the "natural" or " classic" fashion styles and not just outlandish or trendy. The illustrations are well drawn and help differentiate the styles.

Expressionista
By Kathy Lincoln
Expressionista is a wonderful book for young ladies between the ages of 8-12. As a teacher, mother, and aunt I can see how girls to young ladies struggle with their outer appearance matching with their inner being. So many "tweens" struggle with a poor self-image and strive for confidence. Our young ladies have doubts about being competent and reaching their personal goals to feel successful. Whether it is with family, friends, or at school many tweens and teens will pull back as they yearn for a sense to belong.
The book, Expressionista is a wonderful guide for young ladies self-discovery by finding their own "Persona" as their outer appearance will match their inner self. Fashion has always been a means to express one self and the remarkable advice that is offered in this book will give tips on body type, budget, styles, and trends for dressing.
It was a fun journey to learn the five main Fashion Personas. Whether a young lady is a Classic, Romantic, Dramatic, Natural, or a Trend Tracker you learn that everyone fits into one or several categories. One of my fifth graders told me that after she read the book that she can feel comfortable with her own taste and preferences with her clothing. My daughter is twenty-six years old and she also enjoyed the quiz, "What Kind of Shopper Are You?"
Expressionista is a great gift for tweens. It can provide an ideal connection between a grandmother and granddaughter, mother with daughter, aunt with nieces, or just between friends. After reading the book the girls will know who they are and will be able to stand in front of a mirror and smile with confidence by telling herself, "I will be true to myself."

Expressionista, How To Express Your True Self Through Fashion
By S.M. Patterson
I so enjoyed this book, Expressionista. I guess because I love to have fun with fashion. This book gives everyone permission to express themselves not only with clothing but to a style in decorating one's bedroom and for the type of gifts to receive. Now when my relatives and friends ask me what they can give me for a birthday gift, I have ideas of what will match my Persona.
I liked following the shopping and coordination tips as well as taking the Quiz: What is your bedroom's "Fashion Persona?" I understand that my Fashion Persona is my own unique identity as it relates to and is expressed through my personal fashion, style, and design! I love this idea as it all makes me feel good inside and others recognize something special about me. This journey in self-discovery to identify my personality was fun. I now know my personal sense of style and I am not afraid to show it. There are days that I feel like I am a Classic with a touch of Romantic. Then I love to track the new fads so am a Trend Tracker. On the weekends I become a Natural or Dramatic depending on my mood and which friends I will hang with for the day.
Now that I can recognize the Fashion Personas, I have a clearer understanding of others with their own expressed Persona for a better relationships with them. This book makes a great gift! The author, Jackie Walker, is a fashion consultant and coauthor of the book, I Don't Have a Thing to Wear.
