Magic Marks the Spot (Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates Book 1), by Caroline Carlson

Pirates! Magic! Treasure! A gargoyle? Caroline Carlson's hilarious tween novel The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates #1: Magic Marks the Spot is perfect for fans of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events and Trenton Lee Stewart's Mysterious Benedict Society.

Hilary Westfield has always dreamed of being a pirate. She can tread water for thirty-seven minutes. She can tie a knot faster than a fleet of sailors, and she already owns a rather pointy sword.

There's only one problem: The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates refuses to let any girl join their ranks of scourges and scallywags.

But Hilary is not the kind of girl to take no for answer. To escape a life of petticoats and politeness at her stuffy finishing school, Hilary sets out in search of her own seaworthy adventure, where she gets swept up in a madcap quest involving a map without an X, a magical treasure that likely doesn't exist, a talking gargoyle, a crew of misfit scallywags, and the most treacherous—and unexpected—villain on the High Seas.

Written with uproarious wit and an inviting storyteller tone, the first book in Caroline Carlson's quirky seafaring series is a piratical tale like no other.

Pirate-iquette Tips: Brought to you by The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates and Caroline Carlson

PIRATE-IQUETTE TIP #1: “A good pirate doesn’t run away from nefarious scoundrels—she confronts them.”

PIRATE-IQUETTE TIP #2: A pirate simply can’t abandon her mates.

PIRATE-IQUETTE TIP #3: Pirates aren’t punctual. Most pirates arrive for treasure hunts and mutinies fashionably late.

PIRATE-IQUETTE TIP #4: Pirates keep their word. All others walk the plank.

PIRATE-IQUETTE TIP #5: Sword fighting is the same as waltzing—just with a more gruesome conclusion.

Gr 3-6–Hilary strives to be a pirate, but it's hard when the VNHLP (Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates) declines her application because of her gender. She's also the daughter of the Admiral of the Augusta Royal Navy, who is a sworn enemy of pirates, and she's been sent to a finishing school run by Miss Pimm where she is trapped in fainting, waltzing, and embroidery classes. Luckily, Hilary has her magic gargoyle to assist her in running away to the ship of the Terror of the Southlands, a polite pirate named Jasper Fletcher. Along with Jasper's ward, Charlie; Hilary's governess, Miss Greyson; and a boy she suspects is a spy, Hilary sails off on the Pigeon in search of magic buried by the Enchantress of Augusta. But there is something fishy going on in Augusta with magical items being stolen, Miss Pimm taking her girls to sea, and the admiral in hot pursuit of the Pigeon, unconcerned that his daughter is onboard. Will the magic fall into the wrong hands? Will Hilary and Charlie be able to rescue their friends from the dungeons into which they have been mistakenly tossed? In the end, no one is who they seem. In the magical world of Augusta, pirates grow beautiful flower gardens, letters mysteriously get to ships within hours, and the dungeons contain crocheted rugs. The narrative is interspersed with letters, forms, and quotes from the VNHLP handbook that make for entertaining reading, and the whole package is a silly, rollicking good time.–Clare A. From Booklist
Hilary Westfield wants desperately to become a pirate, but her admiral father disapproves and the piracy apprenticeship program accepts only boys. She is sent instead to Miss Pimm’s Finishing School, where classes include etiquette, embroidery, and fainting. Undeterred, she runs away and joins freelance pirate (and “Terror of the Southlands”) Jasper Fletcher and his crew in their quest to locate the lost magic of the Enchantress of the Northlands and turn it over to the people. Carlson’s debut, the first in the Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates series, delivers all the expected swashbuckling tropes—treasure maps, invisible ink, sword fights, and treacherous villains—and then cleverly upends them by adding a talking gargoyle, a governess determined to keep everything shipshape, and a truly terrible dad. Interspersed between chapters are humorous letters, guidebook extracts, and newspaper articles that offer alternative perspectives to the main narrative. Phillips’ pencil artwork includes a frontispiece, a Kingdom of Augusta map, and chapter headings. Give this to fans of Anna Fienberg’s Horrendo’s Curse (2002), another gender-bending pirate yarn. Grades 4-7. --Kay Weisman

Such fun
By Amazon Customer
I chose this book with my 8 year old grandson in mind. He has read several Harry Potters so I figured this would be right up his alley. He just couldn't get into the story and so I read it myself. I can sort of see why the 8 year old boy didn't get into it. There is a vocabulary that may not be familiar to him. The language of "higher society" and finishing school for young ladies is probably just not something he can relate to. I would expect this book might appeal to older girls.

I loved it. The book is just so funny I could not put it down. Much of the humor may be a little subtle for young people. The story is rather straight forward, easy to follow and well written. Hilary wants to go to sea as a pirate, something that is obviously unheard for young ladies. Her father a famous Navy Admiral pays very little attention to his daughter leaving her to the caer of a governess and boarding school.

Hilary has a mind of her own, challenging her governess to keep up with her activities. She doesn't give up easily when she has a plan, and creatively thinks up ways to move forward. Her magic gargoyle helps a lot. I love the characters of the governess, Miss Pimm (of Miss Pimm's Finishing School for Delicate Ladies), Claire, Hilary's roommate and Miss Pimm's helper Philomena and of course the ambitious, Hilary herself. But I adore the characters of the pirates, and of course the Gargoyle who is Hilary's companion, helper and magic protector. I wished I could pick up the gargoyle and scratch him behind the ears. The characters are the wonderful driving force of this novel, the dialogue is great and the settings are wonderful. One of my favorite parts of the book are the letters, posters, and other papers. I laughed out loud at the application to go to sea, and the various letters.

Hilary has much to learn that they did not teach at finishing school. But it turns out that sword fighting is rather like waltzing with a more gruesome outcome. She also learns that treading water for 37 minutes is much easier than sword fighting up and down the deck of the ship. She learns who she should trust and who to watch out for. She sees a number of people in a different light, including her governess, Miss Pimm and her father.

This book is a much simpler story than the Harry Potter books, but it is very entertaining and a quick read. I loved it.

Pirates and Gargoyles and Treasure Hunts, Oh my!
By Miss Bonnie
After recently being denied admittance to The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates simply because she's a girl, Hilary is now being forced into attending Miss Pimm's Finishing School for Delicate Ladies. Not that she has any desire to become a Delicate Lady. She can tread water for 37 minutes, can tie a knot that cannot be undone and hates dresses because dresses make climbing ship's rigging next to impossible.

While Hilary is quite the vibrant character on her own, her gargoyle side-kick provided the comic relief when the story veered too far into weighty territory. The weighty territory mostly involved the odd choice in bad guy, which was a bit of a shock and surprise, however it was handled well. While the story was only occasionally serious, the remaining characters were still just as lighthearted making this a perfect read for young kids. In addition to the story there are between chapter snippets of letters, newspaper articles and other assorted information that was a charming addition.

Magic Marks the Spot is an extremely cute Middle Grade novel that comes equipped with a super spunky heroine, entertaining pirates, magical gargoyles and treasure hunting adventures. While this works as a stand-alone novel with its solid wrap-up ending, it's actually a brand new start to a planned trilogy. Definitely looking forward to future mischief from Ms. Hilary!

Not only do I love this book, but I now want a pet gargoyle!
By Sunny in DC
This is a fantastic middle grade adventure perfect for girls and boys! It is hard not to love and root for our spunky main character, but when you throw in a very funny, talking gargolye into the story, it's hard not love this whole story! It's filled with action and intrigue and I can't wait for the sequel!
