This revised and expanded edition of Workers in America (2004) aims to provide students, teachers, and anyone looking for general information about American labor history, and particularly the organized labor movement, a jumping-off point for their research. Although organized labor is currently on rocky footing in the U.S., its rich history is represented well in this two-volume set. Each volume has a full table of contents, and the second volume has a chronology and index. The chronology begins in 1607, when the first indentured servants were sent to North America, and ends in 2009 with the health-care-reform bill. Each entry includes suggested reading, and cross-referenced topics are noted by bolded words. Photographs and images are found throughout. Subjects vary widely, from simple terms such as Boycott and Dues to weighty topics like Religion and labor. There are entries for a number of important figures. Frances Coralie Perkins, secretary of labor under FDR and the first woman to serve as a cabinet member in the U.S., has a two-page treatment, and Eugene V. Debs is cross-referenced in almost 10 entries outside his own. Strikes, organizational histories, and government acts make up the bulk of the rest of the volumes. Although the goal of the set is to give general information, readers will find fascinating detail throughout. The two-page entry for Sabotage debates the origin of the term, for example. Did it start with the French rail strike where workers damaged the shoes (sabots) holding the rails together? Or with the angry machinists who threw their sabots into the machine works during the French Industrial Revolution? The world may never know.
