The RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight comprises three main aircraft - the Spitfire, the Lancaster and the Hurricane. The Lancaster played no part in the Battle of Britain and the Spitfire is the aeroplane many people most associate with the RAF during World War II, but the Hurricane is the hero that won the Battle of Britain. The RAF's first monoplane fighter aircraft, the Hurricane entered service before the Spitfire and was responsible for destroying more enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain than any other type. Around 60 per cent of claimed 'kills' fell to the guns of Hurricane pilots and the only Battle of Britain Victoria Cross, in fact the only VC awarded to a member of Fighter Command during the war, went to Flight Lieutenant Eric Nicolson of 249 Squadron. In a dogfight on 16 August 1940 Nicolson was badly wounded, his Hurricane damaged and engulfed in flames. While attempting to leave the cockpit, Nicolson spotted one of the enemy Messerschmitts ahead. He returned to the cockpit, which by now was a blazing inferno, and engaged the enemy. The stories of the Hurricane pilots form the basis of Brian Milton's riveting new book. Having tracked down the few surviving former Hurricane pilots who flew the aircraft during the Second World War, Brian has brought together a unique series of personal experiences from his 'Last Witnesses' to tell the story of what it was like to fly and fight in this iconic aircraft not only over the white cliffs of Dover during the Battle of Britain, but also during the Battle of France, the defence of Malta, in the intense heat of the North African desert, in the freezing temperatures of the Arctic wastes and in the suffocating humidity of the Far East. The Hurricane served in every theatre during the Second World War as a fighter, night fighter, ground attack aircraft and even on board ship guarding vital convoys. The fascinating first-hand accounts of these gallant pilots form not only a history of the aircraft, but also a tribute to the many friends they lost in combat.

The Last Hurricane Pilots Speak!

Brian Milton's HURRICANE, THE LAST WITNESSES is an informative, touching collection of reminiscences from pilots - British and otherwise - who flew the Hawker Hurricane in combat during World War II. Given that 2010 is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a sizeable portion of the book is devoted to BoB reminiscenes but other war theaters are covered as well.
Though it was superseded by the incomparable Spitfire, Sydney Camm's humpbacked fighter played a dominant role in early ETO air battles, accounted for the bulk of kills over Luftwaffe aircraft in the BoB and played substantial roles over the Med, in North Africa, the Far East, etc. Milton tracked down and interviewd 18 Hurri pilots. Ten flew in the Battle of France and/or the BoB. The remaining eight saw combat over Malta, the Western Desert, Dutch East Indies, etc. Readers will instantly recognize some of the pilots such as Billy Drake, Bob Doe, Peter Ayerst, Terence Kelly and Eric Brown. Others like Bill Swan, John Ellacombe, Tom Adams and Graham Skellum are little known, which makes their experiences even more valuable.
After a chapter introducing the 18 fliers, Milton briefly traces RAF history and development prior to WWII and then launches into the Battle of France, BoB, etc., interweaving individual pilot's accounts against the larger backdrop of war. Their sometimes lengthy reminiscences are brutally honest, sometimes caustic, sometimes humorous and inevitably self-effacing. No line-shooting here! Milton wisely lets the men have their full say, little editing being in evidence.
While reading HURRICANE, THE LAST WITNESSES is a treat, a touch of sadness permeates the book. Milton refers to each pilot as 'Last Witness so-and-so.' The reader begins to get a sense that these ARE the last of their breed. Once they 'go west' like their former compatriots Stanford Tuck, Frank Carey, Eric Lock, Douglas Bader, etc., the world will be a sadder place.
HURRICANE,THE LAST WITNESSES is, therefore, not only a lively, first-person account of WWII fighter combat but a tribute to those long-ago warriors who launched themselves and their trusty Hurricane mounts against the forces of evil. Recommended.

NB. One curious gaffe in the book - the chapter on the only Fighter Command VC of the war, James B. Nicolson, is entitled 'Eric Nicholson, VC.'

A fine story about a great aircraft and it's pilots.

The author has written a very enjoyable and insightful overview of Hurricane operations from the Battle of France in 1940, to it's last operations in Burma in 1945. Needless to say, the Hurricane was unjustly overshadowed by the more glamorous Spitfire.
I found the numerous accounts by the "last witnesses", illuminating, humorous at times, yet sadly melancholy given their advanced ages. The discussions and comments regarding Leigh-Mallory's & Bader's "Big Wing", vs. Keith Park's far more successful tactics in the Battle of Britain were quite pithy and convincing, at least to me.
Highly recommended for anyone with a serious interest in the Air War of 1939-1945
