The public is learning more about genetics than ever before—witness recent news stories about analyzing one’s genome to predict the possibility of genetic disease, for example—and there is a real need for accurate, accessible information about these conditions. This new encyclopedia from Greenwood provides a good overview of the subject. The author, a professor of educational leadership and a medical writer, begins with three overview essays that explain basic genetics, proteomics, and the human genome. The main body of the work has 18 long entries on special topics (Aging and genetics, Embryology, Genetic counseling) and 355 shorter entries covering individual genetic diseases and diseases that have genetic components. Entries are arranged alphabetically, with appropriate see also references (important, since many of these conditions have more than one name). The entries for diseases include the prevalence of the disorder, other names of the condition, information about its discovery, a definition, the genetic cause, treatment, and sources for further reading. The author notes that these diseases usually have no cure, so the treatment information covers symptomatic relief. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams supplement the text, and many entries offer fact boxes with information about the discoverer of the disease or a person who has it. A resource list and an index complete the work. The reading level is high school and above. The author acknowledges the usefulness of the Genetics Home Reference website(http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov) and libraries will do well to bookmark that site for more information. This is an excellent resource for school, public, and consumer-health libraries, offering a very accessible presentation of complex material. --Barbara Bibel

Review
"Encyclopedia of Human Genetics and Disease has some qualities that could recommend it for a less specialized audience that would appreciate placement of the genetics topics in a broader context and could benefit from the genetics primers and special topic overviews." - Reference Reviews

"This is an excellent resource for school, public, and consumer health libraries, offering a very accessible presentation of complex material." - Booklist

"This resource is a quick guide that will be of particular use for high school students beginning a research paper, but may also be useful to early undergraduates looking for basic information on a particular genetic disease. . . . The entries will not overwhelm a student new to the topic, but they also provide additional resources as a gateway to more in-depth information if a student wishes to go further." - ARBA

Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol, by Ann Dowsett Johnston

In Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol, award-winning journalist Anne Dowsett Johnston combines in-depth research with her own personal story of recovery, and delivers a groundbreaking examination of a shocking yet little recognized epidemic threatening society today: the precipitous rise in risky drinking among women and girls.

With the feminist revolution, women have closed the gender gap in their professional and educational lives. They have also achieved equality with men in more troubling areas as well. In the U.S. alone, the rates of alcohol abuse among women have skyrocketed in the past decade. DUIs, “drunkorexia” (choosing to limit eating to consume greater quantities of alcohol), and health problems connected to drinking are all rising—a problem exacerbated by the alcohol industry itself.

Battling for women’s dollars and leisure time, corporations have developed marketing strategies and products targeted exclusively to women. Equally alarming is a recent CDC report showing a sharp rise in binge drinking, putting women and girls at further risk.

As she brilliantly weaves in-depth research, interviews with leading researchers, and the moving story of her own struggle with alcohol abuse, Johnston illuminates this startling epidemic, dissecting the psychological, social, and industry factors that have contributed to its rise, and exploring its long-lasting impact on our society and individual lives.

Veteran journalist Johnston combines her powerful personal story with strong reporting to show that alcohol harms women even more than men. She grew up with a mother who was an alcoholic and a father who became one in retirement, and she wound up in rehab herself. Johnston includes many examples of alcohol wreaking havoc on women’s lives, including a mom driving drunk who crashes and kills her child passengers, and a high-school class president and prom queen who died of alcohol poisoning. Women are more likely than men to binge drink, which increases their risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and sexually transmitted diseases. Johnston convincingly argues that alcohol is the new tobacco, and, as such, needs a similar public-health response. Just as Virginia Slims boosted cigarettes’ appeal to women, products such as Bethenny Frankel’s Skinnygirl Cocktails and Fergie’s low-calorie, fruit-flavored vodka—Voli—make booze seem alluring. Also cause for concern: drunkorexia (also known as drinking without dining) and fetal alcohol syndrome (the leading developmental disorder in the world). A powerful case for drinking water, not wine. --Karen Springen

Review
“In this comprehensively researched and insightful book, Ann Dowsett Johnston chronicles her own destructive dance with alcohol, her recovery and explores disturbing trends in contemporary women’s relationship to alcohol. A crucially important book for anyone interested in women’s health and addiction issues.” (Susan Juby, author of Nice Recovery)

“Drink is a gift to women, to parents, and to all who want to understand the experience of alcoholism. The writing is gripping and vivid, the voice personal, the research exacting, the stories revealing if sometimes heartbreaking, the conclusions essential. A triumphant life, a triumphant book.” (Gabor Maté M.D., author of In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction)

“A game-changing look at one of our culture’s hidden problems . . . honest, brave and inspirational.” (Margaret Trudeau, author of Changing My Mind)

“A powerful and important book about the increase in alcoholism and binge-drinking among women, and about our willful blindness to the damages of drinking in our culture.” (Susan Cheever, author of My Name Is Bill: Bill Wilson-His Life, and the Creation of Alcoholics Anonymous)

“wallop of a book… full of riveting candor…Johnston brings the weight of her journalism and academic experience to build a convincing case that women are increasingly succumbing to the dark side of alcohol” (Washington Post)

From the Back Cover

Over the past few decades, the feminist revolution has had enormous ramifications. Women outnumber their male counterparts in postsecondary education in most of the developed world, and they are about to do the same in the workplace. But what has not been fully documented or explored is that while women have gained equality in many arenas, they also have begun to close the gender gap in terms of alcohol abuse. In the United States alone, more than twenty-three thousand women die from heavy drinking each year. Binge drinking and so-called drunkorexia are on the rise, contributing exponentially to an array of health conditions and cancers.

Combining in-depth research with her own personal story of recovery, Ann Dowsett Johnston delivers a groundbreaking examination of a shocking yet little-recognized epidemic threatening society today, what preeminent researcher Sharon Wilsnack believes is a "global epidemic" of women's drinking.

Dowsett Johnston's authority comes from a place of experience. Eight years ago she was an award-winning senior journalist with Canada's major newsweekly magazine Maclean's and popular on the speaking circuit. She seemed to have it all when she was named vice principal of McGill University. In private, the high-functioning professional knew she was wrestling with a demon that had undone her own mother: alcohol addiction. Dowsett Johnston took a very private exit from her professional life and went to rehab. She reentered professional life in 2010, winning the prestigious Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy, charged with examining the closing gender gap in the world of risky drinking. Sober now for five years, she retells her struggles with brutal honesty, affording us an unprecedented look at women and drinking that is both moving and enlightening.

Dowsett Johnston dissects the psychological, social, and workplace factors that have contributed to this crisis, exploring their far-reaching impact on society at large and individual lives, including her own. Comprehensive and emotionally riveting, Drink is sure to become a modern classic on the topic of women and drinking, much as Andrew Solomon's The Noonday Demon was for depression. Drink is a brave and powerful story beautifully told and an important investigation into an epidemic that we can no longer afford to ignore.

The Devastating Truth: DRINK
By J.E. Ocean
DRINK, The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol by Ann Dowsett Johnston, could be the most controversial book of our age. Startling in its clarity, Johnston shines a halogen light on a subject that few people seem willing to talk about. DRINK, in the short of it, is about the frightening rise of alcoholism among women and the way alcohol affects them, their lives, their families and how it has already begun affecting the next generation. This issue is not a sleeping giant, but a ravenous, insatiable coyote, greedy as the grave.

Johnston's careful brushstrokes of her own personal battle with alcoholism, paint a painful and terrifying picture of what is going on all over the civilized world. She blends candid interviews from alcoholic women in all walks of life, along with some eye opening, keep-you-up-at- night facts from the marketing aspect.

In this book, you will see a woman you know, probably a lot of them. You may, as I did, see yourself. I believe the adage, the truth will set you free. Find out what drives women to alcoholism and the marketing campaigns that target them. It is possible to be informed and make changes. The rise of alcoholism in women promises to be one of the most devastating to ever plague the civilized world and if you don't believe me, get a copy and see for yourself. I can't recommend this book enough.

Very interesting book
By Amazon Customer
"Drink" is written by a woman who is currently in recovery, but this isn't just another memoir about an alcoholic. Instead, the author uses her personal experiences as a context for this well-researched look at how the rate of alcohol abuse among women is steadily increasing, especially in the United States. In addition to interviews with experts and researchers who shed light on why so many women are turning to alcohol, this book also points the finger at manufacturers who are directly targeting women in many new alcohol marketing campaigns. It's an interesting read for anyone who is interested in women's health issues.

"Draw a line down the middle"
By amazonbuyer
"Drink" is a very thorough memoir of not only Johnston's relationship with alcohol, but more specifically the relationship women in our culture have with alcohol.

What I liked about "Drink":
1. Ann Dowsett Johnston's excellent command of the English language
2. Johnston's voice and tone in "Drink"
3. The fact that the book was not a complete recounting of every sordid moment
4. "Drink" wasn't just about Johnston

At heart mankind has the tendency to be fairly pre-occupied with self-interests and so a memoir can often blow up grievances with others and have gratuitous undertones when recounting the ugly experiences in our lives, especially one that deals with addictions. Ms. Johnston not only fought this tendency, but lifted her memoir to a higher level. She researched the trajectory of drinking over the past 60 years. Studies and surveys don't always tell the entire story, but they certainly do reveal a lot more than anecdotal evidence. Especially when the people behind the studies and surveys are trying to understand not just prove a certain perspective. The sources Johnston went to were clearly trying to be honest and scientific in their research approach. As a result I learned more than I expected.

What I learned:
1. People who tend toward alcoholism have fewer D2 receptors (a type of dopamine receptor) and need to drink more to get the pleasure alcohol brings
2. The advice about drinking a glass of red wine every day is not necessarily healthy advice for women because there are so many links between alcohol and many cancers, but especially breast and colorectal
3. Because women have more body fat and fat contains little water alcohol won't get as diluted as it does in a man's body
4. Women also have less dehydrogenase (metabolizing enzyme) which helps break down and eliminate alcohol
5. Most frightening to me, given the alcohol consumption habits of modern teens: binge drinking can adversely affect brain growth in frontal brain regions, specifically the pre-frontal cortex (logic and reasoning)

One chapter I found very interesting directly addressed how adult alcohol consumption affects and influences children. Children who see their parents drink to excess are more likely to do the same, but even worse doctors have not quantified how much is too much when a woman is pregnant. There are just too many factors and some are not clear. When woman asks "Can I have a small glass of wine on rare occasions?", a doctor will say "yes", but what he does not always know is how each woman defines "rare" and and "small" along with many other individual physical and hereditary factors.

Many people who helped Johnston in her journey to the state she labels as *"recovering alcoholic", but the one I found most moving was her son Nicholas. One night as she was lamenting the end of a wonderful 14 year relationship her son told her to get a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. His next instructions were to write "gains" on one column and "losses" on the other. He instructed her to fill the columns with relationships she had gained or lost since becoming sober. On the loss side she had one and on the gain side she had so many. Alcoholism is closely tied to the loss of so many crucial human connections. We often put such emphasis on our life partners and so little on the many other "connections" that keep us whole in life. Johnston's son made her see that her perspective was warped and that the many relationships she had regained (including Nicholas himself) were as significant as the one she had lost.

This is a must read for educators, parents, and women themselves. Johnston is trying to sound the wake-up call to women in society at large. She is not being judgmental, she sees the collateral damage coming down the road if we don't stop reaching for the bottle each time we need to self medicate or celebrate.

*This is a great term and I agree with Johnston that it is much clearer than "alcoholic" alone.

Confession: Looking Into the Eyes of God: Foreword by Jean Vanier, by Paul Farren

The sacrament of Confession is probably the most talked about sacraments in the Catholic Church. Some have declared the death of the sacrament, while others want to see a revival of the sacrament, believing for that to happen a greater emphasis needs to be placed on sin and hell.

This book explores the sacrament focusing on the two people who confess – God and the penitent. God is the primary confessor when he confesses his forgiveness for and trust in the one who is celebrating the sacrament. The gift of freedom, the existence of hell and the role of conscience are dealt with in the book while forgiveness and sin are discussed at length. The conclusion drawn about sin is that perhaps there are only two – the sin of Adam and Eve and the sin of the Innkeeper at Bethlehem.

Jean Vanier in his foreword to the book says :

Somewhere, along the line, in the history of the Church, people have become more centred upon obedience to laws than upon this relationship with love with a person, with Jesus: more centred upon justice than upon love. This book flows from an understanding of Confession as a meeting of love and as a renewal of friendship.

How that friendship is renewed in the sacrament is explored in the book using the Rite of Penance and St Peter in the gospel. This helps us to understand what happens in the sacrament and how best we can celebrate the sacrament.

Ultimately the book describes the sacrament of Reconciliation as God’s gift to us to express God’s humble forgiveness and his confidence in us and also the place where we take responsibility for our lives. As we humbly seek forgiveness through the priest we make eye contact with God and are overwhelmed with his compassion.

The Sacrament... and this book... are both gifts from God!
By lchris
I wish every Catholic who has ever approached the confessional with a sense of dread could read this book by Father Paul Farren, who is reported as having said that he wrote it because of his deep love for the Sacrament of Reconciliation – a love which he conveyed again and again, with such tenderness, throughout the pages of this incredibly helpful book.

With Father Farren’s most positive of approaches we learn to see that our impression of confession is a direct reflection of how we view God – that if we dread confession, it’s because we see God as a harsh judge who created hell and sends people there… when actually hell is the total absence of God, that God allows hell to exist because He gave us free will, and people go there by their own choice. We are led to see instead that God is the totally loving - always patiently waiting, always completely trusting us to find our way home - Father in the story of the prodigal son.

Father Farren’s insights and guidance show us that by getting in touch with the child that exists inside each of us, by learning to know who we are and whose we are, we will come before God with a yearning and eagerness to restore that feeling of being totally accepted, totally loved, and totally forgiven. Father Farren’s whole approach makes going to confession become a completely positive experience and reveals the Sacrament of Reconciliation to be the gift from God that it is.

And finally… this book is a gift from God! Thank you, Father Paul Farren, for following your heart and your desire for Catholics to “rediscover the joy of Confession.” A powerful must read!

As a event convert I was looking for a quick read to walk me through not just the mechanical "how" of reconciliation, or a checklist of sins to mark off and list out to my confessor, but a deeper look at the "why". This book is perfect. It makes me yearn for true freedom in Christ. It's inspired me to make regular confession am important aspect of my spiritual life -- every two months or so I flip through this book, as well as examine my conscience, in preparation for receiving this beautiful sacrament.

Love Thy Neighbor?

After years of wandering, Daisy Johnson hopes to settle in Turnabout, Texas, open a restaurant, perhaps find a husband. Of course, she'd envisioned a man who actually likes her. Not someone who offers a marriage of convenience to avoid scandal.

Turnabout is just a temporary stop for newspaper reporter Everett Fulton. Thanks to one pesky connecting door and a local gossip, he's suddenly married, but his dreams of leaving haven't changed. What Daisy wants—home, family, tenderness—he can't provide. Yet big-city plans are starting to pale beside small-town warmth….

About the Author
Winnie Griggs grew up in Louisiana in an area her friends considered the back of beyond. She and her siblings explored overgrown lots, cut jungle trails, built forts and camps, and looked for pirate ships on a nearby bayou.

She found her own Prince Charming wearing the guise of a rancher - his steed is a tractor and his kingdom a rural community where they’re still living out their own happily-ever-after.

Turnabout, Texas
April 1895

The ornery, splinter-ridden door refused to budge, no matter how hard she shoved. Or how hard she glared.

Daisy Johnson stood on the darkened sidewalk, glowering at the weathered barricade that stood between herself and her new home. She absently scratched a splinter from her thumb as she glanced down at the black-and-white dog sitting patiently at her heels. "Don't worry, Kip. I'm going to get us inside, one way or the other."

Kip gave her a supportive yip, then began scratching his side.

A noise from over to her left caught Daisy's attention. Down the street, a shadowy figure exited the livery and headed unsteadily down the sidewalk toward the hotel. Probably coming from one of the poker games the locals held there—an activity she was unfortunately all too familiar with.

Other than that, things were quiet. Which was fine by her. Kip was the only company she needed tonight.

Daisy spared a quick glance at the adjoining building, which housed the newspaper office, and thought briefly about knocking on the door to see if she could borrow something to use as a pry bar. But she discarded the thought almost before it had fully formed. Not only was the hour late, but from what she recalled about the man who owned the place, he was an uppity gent with a high-falutin accent of some sort. His attitude reminded her too much of her grandmother. Not the sort who would take kindly to being roused from sleep. Or someone she'd want to owe any favors.

Turning back to the stubbornly closed door, she jutted her chin out and tilted her hat back. No warped slab of lumber was going to get the better of her, not when she was so close to her goal.

Using her foot to shove aside one of the rotten boards she'd pried from across the door frame, Daisy jiggled the key and turned the knob again. There was just enough light coming from the glow of the nearby streetlamp to confirm the door wasn't locked. Which meant it was just stuck.

"If you think you can outornery me," she muttered at the door as she rolled up her sleeves, "then you better think again." With that, she took firmer hold of the knob, twisted it as far as it would go, and led with her shoulder as she rammed against the door. Kip stopped scratching and gave her a you-can-do-it bark.

The door held a moment longer, then scraped noisily open a few inches. Progress. But not enough. Kip might be able to squeeze through that opening, but not her.

Steeling herself, Daisy threw her shoulder into it one more time, grunting at the impact. With a last creak of protest, the door gave up its fight and opened wide enough to allow her to pass.

With a triumphant grin and a prickling of anticipation, Daisy retrieved her pack, tossed her bedroll up on her shoulder and met Kip's curious glance. "This is it, boy. We're home."

With a deep breath, Daisy took her first step inside the building, Kip at her heels. The room was mostly cloaked in shadows, illuminated only by what light filtered in from the streetlamp, and it took a few moments for her eyes to adjust.

As she surveyed what little she could see of the room, her grin disappeared. "Jehoshaphat!" She'd spent the night in abandoned barns that were cleaner and neater than this place.

Striding farther into the room, Daisy muttered a few unladylike epithets under her breath as she batted at cobwebs and felt things crunch beneath her boots that she wasn't ready to examine more closely.

She spied a lamp sitting on the counter and was relieved to find a bit of oil still in the base. It took several attempts, but she finally managed to get it lit and then took a closer look around.

She could hear Kip sniffling around, picking up goodness only knew what kind of scents. A couple of loud doggy sneezes confirmed that it was as dusty at his level as it was at hers.

She hadn't expected a servant-scrubbed palace, but hang it all, she'd hoped to find something in a little better condition than this. No wonder the previous owner had been so quick to gamble it away.

She started to close the outer door, then changed her mind. It wouldn't hurt to leave it open for a little while to help air out the place.

Daisy tromped across the room, ignoring the skittery scrambling sounds coming from just outside the circle of lamplight. Hopefully, whatever critters had taken up residence in here were on their way out. Still, she was glad for Kip's company.

The back room wasn't much better than the front. In the yellowish light of the lamp, she could see dust, debris and a smattering of rickety furniture scattered higgledy-piggledy across the space. Daisy kicked at an old sack lying in her path, then let out an explosive sneeze as a cloud of dust billowed up in her face.

Great! This was just pointy-fanged-rattlesnake perfect.

She fanned the air in front of her between sneezes. Why should the day end even a gnat-speck better than it had started?

Then she caught herself up short. Not that I'm complaining, mind You, Lord. I know You answered my prayers in a powerful way when You took Pa's weakness for gambling and turned it to good by providing me with the deed to this building. And I truly am mighty grateful. Besides, I do know there's nothing wrong with this place that a bit of honest sweat and elbow grease won't fix up just fine and dandy. You've done Your part, and now I aim to do mine.

Daisy looked around again. Make that a lot of elbow grease.

But that didn't scare her none. No, sir. The place was more than roomy enough for what she had in mind. She could already picture how it would look all cleaned up and put to rights. It would be so wonderful to have a place of her own, a place to set down roots and build a proper life. And to finally make some genuine friends of her very own.

And maybe, if she was very, very good, she could have a family of her very own one day, as well.

I know, Lord, baby steps. I asked for a family of my own, and instead, You gave me the seeds of one by providing a means for me to settle down in one place. I'm going to do my best to make myself an acceptable helpmeet in the eyes of some God-fearing man. I promise to look past appearance, manner and finances to see the heart of whoever You send my way.

Feeling focused and enthusiastic once more, Daisy went back to work. First order of business was to clear herself out a place to sleep. There was no way she could lie down in the midst of this gritty, grimy, cluttered mess, so if she was going to get a good night's rest, she'd best start cleaning.

She tested the soundness of a crate near the doorway, then set the lamp and bedroll down. Plopping her hat and pack beside them, she rolled up her sleeves. No time like the present to get started.

Everett Fulton forced his heavy eyelids open, peering blearily around his darkened room. The faint memory of his dream lingered a moment—childhood images of his home in England. Already it was fading, leaving him to wonder if the muffled clatter that had awakened him had been real or only part of his dream.

A moment later, another series of thuds answered the question.

Jerked to full awareness, he tossed off the covers and swiveled so that his feet hit the floor.

It sounded as if someone was rummaging around downstairs. If the not-so-stealthy intruder did any harm to his printing press…

Swiftly crossing the room, Everett paused only long enough to pull on a pair of pants and retrieve the iron poker that rested against the cold fireplace.

Just because he didn't own a gun didn't mean he couldn't defend himself.

Without bothering with a lamp, Everett stole down the stairs, carefully avoiding the fourth tread that had an annoying tendency to creak. His ears strained for some sign of just where his trespasser might be lurking.

He moved to the larger front room first, the room that housed his printing press and served as his office. A faint light filtered in from the large window that faced the street. His gaze went immediately to the bulky shadow that was his printing press. Most of the type was already laboriously set for this week's paper. He would have no compunction whatsoever in trouncing anyone who dared tamper with his work.

Everett's brow furrowed. All was quiet now, but he'd been certain the noise had come from down here. And everything seemed as he'd left it when he locked the doors and headed upstairs earlier.

Tightening his grip on the poker, he eased farther into the room. Taking a deep breath, he sprang around the corner of the press, his makeshift weapon raised. "Ha!"

But no thug crouched behind the machine's shadowy bulk.

Feeling foolish, he lowered his arm. Had he misjudged the direction the disturbance had come from? Everett turned to his desk, a sour smile tugging at his lips. If the intruder was after a cash box, he would be sadly disappointed.

Nothing.

He moved into the back room where he stored his blank paper and other supplies, but again, nothing.

Everett rubbed his neck, slowly exiting the room. Maybe he'd imagined the whole thing, after all.

Scriiittch.

He swung back around. It sounded as if something heavy were being dragged across the floor. He approached the far wall cautiously, then heard it again.

The noise was coming from the other side. Someone was in the adjoining building.

He frowned. The supposedly vacant adjoining building.

He'd never been inside, but understood the building didn't house anything more valuable than cobwebs and a jumble of rubbish and cast-off furnishings. What possible reason could someone have for rattling around in there in the middle of the night?

Everett shrugged and moved back toward the stairs. Other than the annoyance of having his sleep disturbed, it wasn't any of his concern.

Then he stilled. Except that there might be a story in it. Something more newsworthy than births, deaths and barn raisings for a change. Since he was already awake, it couldn't hurt to check things out. His pulse accelerated at the idea of a real story, a chance to resume his role as reporter rather than mere transcriber and typesetter. It had been quite a while.

Everett hurried upstairs, donned a shirt and shoes, then padded lightly down again.

He still carried the poker. Not that he intended to use it unless he had need to defend himself.

He was a reporter, after all, not a confounded hero.

Stepping onto the plank sidewalk, Everett paused a moment to listen. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked and was answered by a second mutt. Four blocks away he could see light seeping from the windows of the livery. An ash-colored moth lazily circled the nearby streetlamp.

Other than that, everything was quiet. Enough light filtered down from the streetlamps and gauze-covered half moon that he could see the building next door easily.

He moved forward, studying the front of the run-down establishment. The boards that had barred the door were now lying on the sidewalk against the building, and the door itself gaped open.

He peered in, but it was too shadowy to make out anything but irregular shapes. However, he did notice a yellowish light emanating from the back room—the area where the sounds had come from.

Was it a squatter? Or a misguided thief?

Everett hesitated, listening to the scrapes and muffled grunts, torn between his reporter's instinct to find out the truth of the matter and the niggling voice that told him he'd be wise to arm himself with more than a poker before proceeding.

Besides, what if it was Gus Ferguson, the building's owner? Gus was a crotchety old hermit who kept to himself, except for the occasional trip to town to get supplies and indulge in a bit of drinking and poker playing. In the nine months Everett had resided in Turnabout, he'd never seen Gus look twice at the place, much less go inside. Why would the man choose this unlikely time to come here? Unless he'd decided to stop in after tonight's poker game.

Perhaps it would be best if he just quietly slipped away and forgot the whole thing.

Everett winced at the sound of falling crates. The sound of a woman crying out, however, had him through the door as if shot from a pistol. And was that a dog yapping?

He swallowed a yelp as he bumped his knee against the edge of a sagging counter. He kept going, though, albeit with somewhat impaired agility.

Charging into the back room, the first thing he spied was the rubble of storage shelves that had given way, dumping splintered lumber and unidentifiable contents in a dusty heap.

A grumbled humph drew his attention to a woman sitting on the floor, trying to pull her foot free of the mess.

"I'm okay, Kip. But as for this worm-ridden, rickety pile of junk, the only thing it's good for is kindling."

Everett recognized the voice before he got a good look at her face—it had a distinctive lilt to it and boasted a slight accent that he couldn't quite place, but was unmistakable.

Daisy Johnson. What in the world was the peddler's daughter doing here? She and her father had left town two weeks ago.

Miss Johnson looked up and recognized him at the same time. "Mr. Fulton. What're you doing in here?"

"Apparently rescuing a damsel in distress." Still concerned about her predicament, Everett crossed to her in long strides.

The dog seemed to take exception to his approach and assumed a stiff-legged, curled-lip stance in front of Miss Johnson.

"It's okay, Kip," she said, giving the dog a reassuring pat. Then she turned a frown on him. "I'm not a damsel. And I'm not in distress. My ankle just got caught under this mess, is all."

Did she even know what distress meant? "Let me give you a hand with that." Not bothering to wait for an answer, he heaved up on the piece her foot was trapped beneath, allowing her to free herself, all the while keeping a wary eye on the dog. And the dog returned his look, stare for stare.

Once she'd shifted her leg away from danger, he set the offending shelving back down. Then he knelt beside her, doing his best to ignore the dust and grime that surrounded him. "Allow me," he said, taking over the job of unlacing her boot.

"There's really no need," she protested, trying to push away his hands. "I can do that—"

He gave her his best don't-argue-with-me stare. "Be still, please. You're stirring up more dust, and I'd rather not succumb to a fit of sneezing."

She paused, an abashed look on her face.

Good. He'd gotten through to her for the moment. Time to drive his point home. "It's important to make certain you're not badly injured before you try to stand. Or would you prefer I ask Dr. Pratt to take a look at you?"

His words had the opposite effect of what he'd expected. She glared at him. "There's no need to be so snippy. And no, I do not prefer to have you bother the doc at this late hour over a few bruises."

Snippy? Didn't the girl recognize authority when she heard it? Clenching his jaw to contain his irritation, he gently slid the worn, dirty bit of footwear, including her stocking, off her foot. He studied her ankle, unhappy with what he saw. "It's already starting to swell and darken. It might be wise to have Dr. Pratt take a look at you, after all."

"Glory be!" She brushed his hands away and smoothed down her skirts. "It's nothing more than a bad bruise." She flexed her ankle to prove her point, but he noticed the wince she couldn't quite hide. "It'll be fine by morning," she insisted.

A perfect book!
By Irene's Book Reviews
This story will get your attention from the beginning. The characters have depth and you will instantly enjoy them. Daisy is new to town and meets the local newspaper man on her first night. Everett is surprised how quickly Daisy becomes a part of his day to day life. The two begin to share some fun moments together and start a friendship. When Everett's sister comes to town the dynamic of their relationship changes for the better.

I gave this book 5/5 stars. Although it is part of a series you do not have to read the others to enjoy this book. I thought the story line was well developed and it kept me interested. I enjoyed the characters as they were believable. You could actually see this story being true for some couple! I thought the characters changed a bit during the story and that made it even more believable. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quick romance to read.

I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Loved it!
By Faye
Daisy Johnson is tired of traveling here an there with her drunkard father, and decides to escape and put down roots in Turnabout, Texas.

Everett is a British gentleman, and newspaper reporter who settles for a time in Turnabout. He has skeletons in his closet, and he's itching to move back to the big city, he's just waiting for his big break. But when Daisy moves into the other side of his duplex, a connecting door, and the town's gossip might just change things between them...

What a great book! I loved the characters and how they were brought together naturally by circumstances. One of my favorite characters was Abigail, Everett's sister who was spunky and enthusiastic.

Daisy and Everett had great dialogue together and I love how they came to appreciate each other.

Overall, this was such a fun book that really kept the pages turning. I loved every moment of it, I actually read this in one sitting! Highly recommend!

I received an ecopy of this book in return for an honest review. Thank you!

Stay Up With Me: Stories, by Tom Barbash

The stories in Tom Barbash's wondrous and evocative collection explore the myriad ways we try to connect with one another and with the sometimes cruel world around us. The newly single mother in "The Break" interferes in her son's love life over his Christmas vacation from college. The anxious young man in "Balloon Night" persists in hosting his and his wife's annual watch-the-Macy's-Thanksgiving-Day-Parade-floats-be-inflated party while trying to keep the myth of his marriage equally afloat. "Somebody's Son" tells the story of a young man guiltily conning an elderly couple out of their home in the Adirondacks, and the narrator in "The Women" watches his widowed father become the toast of Manhattan's midlife dating scene, as he struggles to find his own footing in life.

The characters in Stay Up with Me find new truths when the old ones have given out or shifted course. In the tradition of classic story writers like John Cheever and Tobias Wolff, Barbash laces his narratives with sharp humor, psychological acuity, and pathos, creating deeply resonant and engaging stories that pierce the heart and linger in the imagination.

From Booklist
Novelist and nonfiction writer Barbash’s piercing first story collection explores characters reacting to the chaos and consequences of their everyday lives, from fractured relationships to the loss of a loved one and instant regret. In “Balloon Night,” Timkin prepares to host his annual party even though his wife abruptly left him two nights ago. As friends and strangers arrive, Timkin tries frenetically to preserve his marriage’s façade rather than confront its demise. In “Her Words,” a teacher finds himself in an unusual situation when one of his students begins dating his son, who still lives with him. As the young couple’s relationship becomes more serious, the lines between teacher and student and between father and son become blurred. “The Women” finds Andrew struggling to come to terms with his mother’s death as his widowed father becomes a desirable commodity for the over-50 set. In “The Break,” a recently separated mother uneasily becomes reconciled to her son’s independence while getting used to her own new circumstances. Barbash’s 13 sharply eloquent tales are intricately shaded by his characters’ desires. --Leah Strauss

Review
“Barbash is a true craftsman who sweats over every sentence, and that artistry makes you want to read the next story… These characters…really aren’t like the rest of us, except–and this is the crucial part, this is why Barbash is worth reading–they hurt in precisely the same way we do…” (New York Times Book Review)

“These stories should come with a warning: They might undo you.” (The New York Times)

“Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint the thread that binds stories in a collection together, but in the case of STAY UP WITH ME it’s enough to say that each story is very, very good…Barbash seems drawn to characters…who are reeling from freshly broken families or relationships” (Entertainment Weekly)

“Fantastic…These Cheever-esque stories all show that Barbash has a sensitive ear towards the subtle ways that relationships are formed and altered, but he’s also not afraid to open a story with a car accident and watch the sparks fly.” (The Daily Beast)

“Barbash gives us a wise, infatuating collection that navigates the thorny passages of preoccupation more honestly than any recent fiction. With alarm and empathy, and often an irrepressible urge to laugh, we watch his characters dig their own graves and realize ‘what it feels like to be lost.’” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“The new collection of short stories from Barbash…explores the difficult nature of human connection, whether it’s a young couple holding a party amidst the struggles of their foundering marriage…or a young man having a rough time in the dating world, whose widowed father is having no problems finding love again.” (7x7 Magazine)

“Barbash makes a strong impression with his first collection of stories… he deploys a keen, incisive wit; consider ‘The Women,’ in which the narrator watches his widowed father connect on the midlife dating scene, even as his own love life fizzles.” (San Jose Mercury News)

“STAY UP WITH ME is a cohesive compilation of 13 distinct stories, all of which evoke the intricacies of human nature… Altogether, Barbash’s stories present a poignant cast of characters that will resonate with readers.” (Brooklyn Daily Edge)

“Stay Up With Me is a superb collection of stories-sophisticated, lyrical and moving, incisive in depicting the emotional connections between parents and children, husbands and wives, strangers and lovers. Tom Barbash is a blazingly good writer.” (Jess Walter, author of the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Ruins)

“Graceful. If Raymond Carver had lived in Manhattan he might have delivered stories like “The Break”…or “Balloon Night.” - Kirkus Reviews (Kirkus Reviews)

“Is there such a thing as the Great American Story Collection? Yes, and this is it.” (Justin Cronin, author of The Passage)

“This appealing collection reveals a supple writer who draws us in from the start of each new story, with none of the ‘collection fatigue’ one sometimes feels along the way from even the best practitioners of the genre. Highly recommended.” (Library Journal)

So worth staying up with this book!
By An Avid Reader
I am not a big short story reader, but if someone hands me a book and says Read this, I do, dutifully. Usually, I skim at least a few pages so I can pretend I read the whole thing. So it was going to be the same with Stay Up With Me. But by the third page I knew I was in the hands of not only an elegant writer but a really good storyteller, so I stopped skimming, started again, and read it cover to cover (I actually read one story twice, a few days apart, which I never do). I'm not a good reviewer, so I'll give you one line that I loved, which I think sums up how good a writer the author is:" ... You could see my father surrounded by an infield of swooning women." An infield! I loved that. And also this, a really great review by the NY Times that I found later: [...]
Here's what I can say - it seems like a quiet book, but in fact there's a lot of action - people doing things to themselves and others - but it's real, every day action. Not car chases, or gun fights, but the clash of reality against a character's deeper needs. It's mothers and sons, husbands and wives, and - in one of my favorite stories - two young people who are not quite strangers to each other, an icy road, too many drinks. I highly recommend.

Helping parents and teachers recognise the needs of children who are the manipulators, the negotiators, the debaters, the competitors, the dare devils and the passive resisters of this world. What would it be like to have to parent Bart Simpson or Angelica Pickles? Every day, many parents and teachers struggle with challenging (and lovable) children who have wilful personalities. these are often kids who are stubborn, defiant, determined, free-spirited or just plain difficult. Yet while they may be hard work, they are often the movers and shakers of the future. Many of history's great achievers, political leaders and national figures were forceful children. How can parents and teachers learn to manage these kids, and help them to change and develop the positive life habits - including an awareness of others, dealing with anger, staying focused and forming true friendships - that they sorely need? In this book he helps parents and teachers recognise the needs of children who are the manipulators, the negotiators, the debaters, the competitors, the dare devils and the passive resisters of this world. He shows how parents can create change in the family and how teachers can create change in the classroom (so that these children do not dominate). Parents may have to live with their one headstrong child, but teachers often face dozens of them every day! So, to assist them, Andrew Fuller has also included a special supplement focusing on their particular needs.

the book is very interesting, but I guess I'm not ready now. My son is only 2 y/o it doesn't really revolve around how to raise a 2 y/o.

From free-range cowboy to down-home daddy!

When pilot Lisa Phillips was named coguardian of her niece she did everything by the book: clipped her wings, took cooking classes and settled down to be a stand-in mom. But she hadn't planned on playing house with her "frenemy"—freewheeling rodeo rider and good-time cowboy Brett Sullivan.

Sully stared down one-ton bulls on a daily basis, but a three-year-old girl struck terror into his heart. And so did the type A "Ice Queen" Lisa. She was too tempting…too dangerous. More than anything Sully wanted to melt her heart…and for the first time he wanted what he couldn't have—a real family with her and their little girl.

About the Author
Christine Wenger has worked in the criminal justice field for many years. She has a master's degree in probation & parole administration & sociology from Fordham University, but the knowledge gained from such studies certainly has not prepared her for what she loves to do--write romance!

A native central New Yorker, she enjoys watching bull riding & rodeo with her favorite cowboy, her husband Jim.

The door of the huge, white Victorian opened and Brett "Sully" Sullivan walked in, his cowboy boots making a dull thud on the gleaming hardwood floor.

Standing in the middle of the great room, he seemed to be larger than life, larger than the room. He held his black cowboy hat to one side, nervously turning it between his thumb and index finger.

Lisa Phillips hadn't seen Sully in three years, and time had been good to him. His pitch-black hair was cut short with haphazard peaks on the top, and it gave him a devil-may-care look that fit his personality. Without the boots and hat and in his gray suit and maroon tie, he looked more like a lawyer than the bull rider that he was.

"Where's Rose?" Sully asked, his turquoise-blue eyes full of concern.

"She's in her room. My parents and your parents are putting her to bed," Lisa answered, spooning sugar into her coffee.

He nodded then shifted on his feet. He seemed not to know whether to stay or go. He probably wanted to retreat back into his motor home instead of trying to make polite conversation with neighbors and relatives who were paying their respects.

Lisa would just like to fly to some place tropical. Some place where she could soak up the rays and water on a beach…and maybe stop crying.

"Is that coffee?" Sully finally asked.

"Yes. And it's hot and strong."

He pulled out a chair next to her and helped himself from the pot that someone had graciously put in front of her on a silver tray. She noticed that he drank his black—just like a tough cowboy should.

Lisa thought back to the day of Rose's christening. She and Sully were Rose's godparents and it had been a festive affair. No, it was a festive weekend—in direct contrast to today.

The evening of the christening, Rick and Carol, Sully's brother and her sister, had called a meeting with the two of them and asked them to be Rose's guardians in case something happened to them.

Lisa was stunned yet flattered that she had been chosen to see to Rose's upbringing.

Then the unthinkable happened.

Rick and Carol were gone now. Deceased. Their car had hydroplaned during a rainstorm and hit a bridge support. Rose was with them in the car, but she escaped without a scratch, safely belted into her car seat.

The realization that she'd never see her sister, Carol, again rocked her from her hair roots to her toes, and tears pooled in her eyes. When would she ever stop crying?

And Rose. She was an orphan now. And she and Sully were Rose's guardians.

"Sully?"

"Yeah?"

He turned to her. His blue eyes were red-rimmed and bloodshot. For a second, she felt sorry for the cowboy. Rick was his brother and her brother-in-law. She had loved Rick, too.

"Remember sitting here three years ago?" she asked. "Rick and Carol had us sign guardianship papers."

"Yeah."

"We're Rose's guardians now."

"I know." He pushed his cowboy hat back with a thumb. "I never thought in a million years that—"

"Me, either. I'm not cut out to be a mother."

"I'll be the worst father in the world."

"What was my sister thinking?"

"My brother must have been drunk."

Lisa took a sip of coffee. It was too strong, so she added more cream. "What do we do now?"

"Damned if I know."

Lisa kicked off her heels and shrugged out of her black blazer that matched her black skirt. Sighing, she thought how she hated the suit, which she reserved for funerals.

In the mirror on the wall she noticed that her pale blond hair had frizzed in the drizzling rain at the cemetery. Her face looked drained of all color despite the makeup she'd applied.

She was trying to hold her emotions together, but she felt another wave of tears threatening. All she wanted to do was to find the nearest bedroom, pull the comforter over her head and sleep. When she woke, she'd find that all of this had just been a nightmare.

Before they could talk anymore, the doorbell rang and more neighbors arrived, carrying casseroles and cakes. Lisa let the capable Mrs. Turner from across the street handle everything, bless her.

As if someone had turned up the volume on a TV talk show, the high-ceilinged room came alive with noise. Both sets of their parents, Gordon and Betsy Sullivan and Clyde and Melanie Phillips, were deep in discussion. It soon reached a crescendo.

"We can take the child," Betsy said. "We have more than enough room at our Palm Beach condo. Eighth floor. Great views."

"You can't raise Rose in a condo," Melanie argued. "We live in a child-friendly commune in Kentucky. She'll have a lot of children to play with."

"And to dig a new outhouse with at your commune," Gordon added.

"How dare you!" Melanie pointed a finger at him. Former army colonel or not, she wasn't going to tolerate that kind of slam against her parents from Sully's father.

Sully stood up from the table, oozing authority. "That's enough," he said firmly.

Lisa nodded. "I don't want Rose to hear her grandparents snapping at one another. Rose's guardians have already been decided, and Sully and I are them!"

"I don't want any fighting," Sully said. "And I'm sure that you already know about Carol and Rick's wishes."

A deep voice cut through the noise. "I'm sure that they know, too."

Everyone turned in the direction of a distinguished white-haired man in a three-piece suit.

"I'm Carol and Rick's lawyer, Glen Randolph. I'm so sorry to interrupt, but my clients, who were also my good friends, warned me that this would happen. So while everyone is still here, I'd like to meet with Rose's grandparents and Brett and Lisa." The lawyer looked around at the guests who had stopped their conversations to listen. "Let's adjourn to Rick's office."

The capable Mrs. Turner waved them away and called for the remaining guests to help themselves at the buffet table.

Little Rose's relatives followed the lawyer soundlessly, single file.

After they all took a seat, they looked at him expectedly.

"Like I said, I'm Glen Randolph, and I was a personal friend of Carol and Rick." He paused, making eye contact with each of them. He opened an accordion folder and pulled out a handful of typed papers. "As you know, they named Brett and Lisa as Rose's guardians, and—"

"Sully? Are you aware that my son lives in a motor home?" Gordon Sullivan interrupted. "He's a shiftless bull rider, for heaven's sake. He travels from one bull riding event to the next. What can he offer a three-year-old?"

Gordon's face was red, and Lisa thought he was going to have a heart attack. Although she wasn't a Sully fan, she didn't particularly like what Gordon was saying about him.

Oh, all right, she might as well admit that she thought the same thing about Sully.

Sully bit down on his lower lip. "Rick trusted me with his daughter. I won't let him down."

"And I won't let Carol down," Lisa added.

"How can you say that?" Her mother rolled her eyes. "You're just like Sully, Lisa. You can't stay in one place long enough to raise a child. You fly those diesel-guzzling biohazard planes all over creation. You pay good money for an apartment that you're never at. How do you expect to raise a three-year-old?"

I'm just like Sully?

No way!

"You two are going to make quite the couple," her father said.

"We're not a couple," Lisa stated.

"That's for sure," Sully added under his breath.

Sully tapped his fingers on Rick's desk. His large turquoise ring bobbed up and down. This was the same ring he had been wearing three years ago at Rose's christening. Lisa remembered it. Funny, she remembered a lot of things about him.

And even though she didn't care a fig about him, for some reason she looked for him on TV when the Professional Bull Riders events were on. He was riding hot lately and was near the top in the standings.

He couldn't ride and take care of Rose at the same time.

She couldn't fly and take care of Rose at the same time.

Lisa swallowed hard. She needed an income. She needed to fly. She was a pilot. That's what she did. That's what she was.

The lawyer continued, "I will be making surprise visits to ensure Rose is thriving under their care. This is as per the instructions of Carol and Rick. They have also left a generous stipend for the care of Rose, which I'll dispense monthly for her needs. Carol and Rick also requested that Rose be raised in this house and have left it to Lisa and Brett. It's paid in full. There is also a trust fund for Rose for when she either goes to college or turns twenty-one. They have also left a personal note for Lisa and Brett."

Mr. Randolph handed the letter to Lisa. "You might want to read it at a later date."

"Thank you," Lisa mumbled, looking at her name and Sully's written on the envelope in Carol's rolling script. Tears stung her eyes. She'd never be able to pick up the phone and talk to Carol again or hop a plane and visit whenever she needed a vacation or a "Rose fix."

"I know that this is probably overwhelming at this sad time," Mr. Randolph said. "But if Lisa and Sully decide that they cannot accept guardianship, or if they fail my evaluation, then Rose will be awarded to the grandparents. Six months with one pair, and then six months with the other."

The grandparents perked up, but Lisa was appalled. She had forgotten about the six-month split! That wasn't the answer, either. It would be too hard on Rose, too disruptive. Certainly everyone could see that!

Everyone except the grandparents. No doubt they were already mentally packing Rose's bags, certain that she and Sully would fail.

Great characters, sassy dialogue, engaging storyline
By Hope This Helps
Note: Stands alone read. 3rd in the Gold Buckle Cowboys series.

GOOD READ! Well written, appealing characters, feisty dialogue, great supporting cast, and a touching plot dealing with parental pressures, compromise, and adapting to life's changes.

THE STORY follows ultra-serious, urber-organized pilot, Aunt Lisa Phillips and adventurous, laid-back, rodeo bull rider Uncle Brett (Sully) Sullivan, as they care for their orphaned three-year old niece, Rose. As part of the guardianship agreement, these two feisty opposites are tasked with living in the same house to love and care for Rose. Their differences make for prickly arguments, tough compromises, and as they learn from each other a sweet romance develops.

OVERALL, engaging storyline about seeing someone through new eyes, and learning to love unconditionally and accept unconditional love in return. A sweet romance, but equally touching is the developing relationship between Rose and her loving guardians, Sully and Lisa.

GOLD BUCKLE COWBOYS SERIES includes The Cowboy Code, How to Lasso a Cowboy, and Lassoed into Marriage.

You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, L. L. Miller, R. C. Ryan, or L. Wilde. For sweet, funny, romances with great descriptive imagery and heart touching angst, try Susan Fox, Cara Colter, and E. Palfrey.
