Obermayer was one of those who earned a combat star without ever coming close enough to a battlefront to hear or see booming guns. From school, from basic training, and later from Europe, Obermayer wrote home with vivid descriptions of life in the Army. Reflective and observant, he recorded his views of both French and German reactions to the American occupation force, race relations among enlisted men, and the problems of supplying the troops as they crossed Europe after the Normandy invasion. One of the few people alive today to have seen Hermann Goering, Rudolf Hess, and other leaders of Third Reich, Obermayer wrote compellingly about the Nazis on trial at Nuremberg, describing Goering’s leadership qualities when stripped of the symbols of rank. A Jew himself, Obermayer explained his reactions at the trials when he witnessed the first documentary confirmation that six million Jews had been killed in the Holocaust. He knew and wrote about the official U.S. Army hangman at Nuremberg. Readers will find in Obermayer’s letters and connective commentary a welcome tendency to look for what went on beneath the surface, a challenging view of how his experiences cast light on today’s politics and issues, and an engrossingly human story of war behind the lines.

This superior World War II memoir consists largely of material from Obermayer's wartime letters. Obermayer, from an affluent Jewish family in Philadelphia, was drafted in 1943 and sent straight into the Army Specialized Training Program. When the program was abolished, he was trained as an airborne combat engineer, then reassigned to the job of maintaining the gasoline pipelines laid across France and protecting them from pilferage and outright sabotage--by the French, for whom his letters have more than a few scathing remarks. He ended his military career in a rapidly shrinking judge advocate general's office, in time to see and be impressed by Hermann Goring at the Nuremburg trials. After briefly attending the University of Geneva, he sailed home to a postwar career as a journalist and editor, after having survived the army hierarchy, lousy accommodations, incompetent officers, and Napoleon's famous fifth element, mud. Herman J. Obermayer was born and raised in Philadelphia. After a successful career as a journalist and as the editor-publisher of two daily newspapers, he enjoyed a second career as a newspaper management consultant in countries emerging from communism. He lives in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife of fifty years.

I wish all Americans would read this book!

I cannot praise Mr. Obermayer too highly. So much of what we think we know we learn from the media these days--and so much of what we think we know about World War II and 'the greatest generation'-- is so much hogwash. When we get discouraged at how things are going in Iraq or elsewhere these days, it is fascinating to learn how people--and our soldiers--really thought about things during the last years of "the good war." He is (and was--as a young man) a wonderful writer.

True Report of Army Life in WWII

Mr. Obermayer's book is an excellent read. The chapters feature a summary and then copies of Mr. Obermayer's letters to his family during World War II.

What makes Mr. Obermayer's story interesting is that he was a young man who didn't like the Army, but did his best to serve his country.

Every since the movie "Saving Private Ryan," and the book "The Greatest Generation," the public has viewed WWII veterans as people who were on a crusade. "Soldiering for Freedom" brings back the facts of 1940 military life we've forgotten. He describes:

* The hurry up and wait so common to military operations.

* The dependence on rumors for information and the concurrent frustration of not knowing what's happening.

* The forming and training and then re-forming and retraining. He goes through a dizzying number of programs and units: college based technical training, Combat Engineer battalion, Airborne Engineer battalion, a medic in a Fuel line detachment, and legal clerk.

* The senseless and unfair rules: officer only facilities of higher quality than the enlisted men were provided, censor ship of his mail, working for officers and noncommissioned officers who had less intellegent and/or education than him, etc.

* The resentment and lack of support from liberated French people for the war effort.

This is a part of the Army and the war that use to be shown in the television show "Sergeant Bilko" or the "Sad Sack" comic books--Civilians with an uneasy alliance to military life who often spent their time in uniform doing the best with what little the Army gave them.

Must read for all ages

This book is not only an excellent history lesson on WWII but it is a fascinating account of values applicable today such as family unity, education and patriotism. I am impressed at Mr. Obermayer's attention to detail, his astute observations for a young soldier at that time and especially at his commitment to daily letter writing to his parents. I have shared his writings with my children in hopes that they will adopt the same diligence when they leave the nest. There is much to enjoy and learn by reading "Soldiering for Freedom".

In the framework of the German Research Foundation’s (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) funded "Rain Forest Savanna Contact" project (2003-2009) two abbreviated English versions of PhD theses are here published, one by J. Eisenberg on neotectonics and the other by M. Sangen on river sediments in rain forest-savanna transitional zones. Complementary articles are an introduction on geological history, by B. Kankeu et al. and a paper on environmental risks by M. Tchindjang et al., together these complete the results of this joint German-Cameroonian research project.

This book will be of interest to all concerned with ecosystems dynamics, tropical forests, savannas and related development problems of Third World countries, especially regional planners, ecologists, botanists, earth scientists and students of the Quaternary (e.g. LGM and Holocene ecosystem dynamics, Global Change). It will be valuable for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates as a reference for new research articles on the topic of long‐term geologic‐tectonic and Quaternary landscape evolution in an up‐to‐now not well explored marginal area of the Western Congo basin.

About the Author

Since almost 25 years Professor Dr. Jürgen Runge (*1962) has worked as a Physical Geographer and Environmentalist on the evolution of tropical landscapes, former and recent environmental changes and on questions related to tropical and subtropical land use in subsaharan semi-humid and humid regions in Africa. After basic studies in Geography, Geology, Soil Science and Botany at the Universities of Giessen and Göttingen, he regionally specialized on West and Central Africa as an assistant Professor at the University of Paderborn. Since the 1990’s extended field work and scientific expeditions on the Late Pleistocene climate and vegetation in the Congo basin and neighbouring areas were undertaken. In 2000 he was appointed as a full Professor for Physical Geography and Geoecology with regional focus on subsaharan Africa at Frankfurt University. In 2003 he set up the ‘Center for interdisciplinary research on Africa’ (Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Afrikaforschung, ZIAF, www.ziaf.uni-frankfurt.de) In 2005 he tooks over the editorship of ‘Palaeoecology of Africa’. Between 2007 and 2010 he worked as a project manager for the the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in the topic of sustainability of geological resources and good gouvernance in Central Africa.

Zahir Ra'if Quarishi, hereditary king of the gulf state of Maraban, leapt up from behind his desk when his younger brother, Akram, literally burst into his office.

'What has happened?' Zahir demanded urgently, straightening to his full six feet three inches of height, his lean powerful body tensing like the army officer he had been into immediate battle readiness.

His face unusually flushed, Akram came to an abrupt halt to execute a jerky bow as he belatedly recalled the niceties of court etiquette. 'My apologies for the interruption, Your Majesty—'

'I assume there's a good reason,' Zahir conceded, his rigidity easing as he read Akram's troubled expression and recognised that something of a more private and personal nature had precipitated his impulsive entry to one of the very few places in which Zahir could usually depend on receiving the peace he required to work.

Akram stiffened, embarrassment claiming his open good-natured face. 'I don't know how to tell you this—'

'Sit down and take a deep breath,' Zahir advised calmly, his innate natural assurance taking over as he settled his big frame down into an armchair in the corner of the room and rested his piercing dark-as-night eyes on the younger man while moving a graceful hand to urge him to sit down as well. 'There's nothing we can't discuss. I will never be as intimidating as our late father.'

At that reminder, Akram turned deadly pale, for their late and unlamented parent had been as much of a tyrant and a bully in the royal palace with his family as he was in his role as a ruler over what had once been one of the most backward countries in the Middle East. While Fareed the Magnificent, as he had insisted on being called, had been in power, Maraban's oil wealth had flowed only one way into the royal coffers while their people continued to live in the Dark Ages, denied education, modern technology and adequate medical support. It had been three years since Zahir took the throne and the changes he had immediately instigated still remained a massive undertaking. Angrily conscious that his brother worked just about every hour of the day in his determination to improve the lives of his subjects, Akram suddenly dreaded giving Zahir the news he had learned. Zahir never mentioned his first marriage. It was too controversial a topic, Akram acknowledged awkwardly. How could it not be? His brother had paid a high price for defying their late father and marrying a foreigner from a different culture. That he had done so for a woman clearly unworthy of his faith could only be an additional source of aggravation.

'Akram…?' Zahir prompted impatiently. 'I have a meeting in thirty minutes.'

'It's…her! That woman you married!' Akram recovered his tongue abruptly. 'She's out there in the streets of our capital city shaming you even as we speak!'

Zahir froze and frowned, his spectacular bone structure tightening beneath taut skin the colour of honey, his wide sensual mouth compressing hard. 'What the hell are you talking about?'

'Sapphire's here filming some television commercial for cosmetics!' Akram told him in fierce condemnation, resenting what he saw as an inexcusable insult to his elder brother.

Zahir's lean strong hands clenched into fists. 'Here?' he repeated in thunderous disbelief. 'Sapphire is filming here in Maraban?'

'Wakil told me,' his brother told him, referring to one of Zahir's former bodyguards. 'He couldn't believe his eyes when he recognised her! It's lucky that our father refused to announce your marriage to our people—I never thought we'd live to be grateful for that…'

Zahir was stunned at the idea that his ex-wife could have dared to set a single foot within the borders of his country. Rage and bitterness flamed through his taut powerful frame and he sprang restively upright again. He had tried not to be bitter, he had tried even harder to forget his failed marriage…only that was a little hard to do when your ex became an internationally famous supermodel, featuring in countless magazines and newspapers and even once in a giant advertising hoarding over Times Square. In truth a mere five years ago he had been a sitting duck of a target for a cunning schemer of Sapphire Marshall's ilk and that lowering awareness had left an indelible stain on his masculine ego. At twenty-five years of age he had, thanks to his father's oppression, still been a virgin, ignorant of the West and Western women, but although he hadn't had a clue he had at least tried to make his marriage work. His bride, on the other hand, had refused to make the smallest effort to sort out their problems. He had fought hard to keep a wife who didn't want to be his wife, indeed who couldn't even bear for him to touch her.

More fool him, he reflected with hard cynicism, for he was no longer an innocent when it came to women. The explanation for Sapphire's extraordinary behaviour had become clear as crystal to him once he shed his idealistic assumptions about his wife's honour: his bride had only married him because he was wealthy beyond avarice and a prince, not because she cared about him. Unpardonably, her goal in marrying him had simply been the rich pay-off that would follow their divorce. He had married a woman with all the heart of a cash register and she had, not only, ripped him off but also got away scot free while he had paid in spades. At that reflection, his even white teeth ground together, tiny gold flames igniting in his fierce eyes. If only he had been dealing with her in the present as a male who now knew the score, he would have known exactly how to handle her.

'I'm sorry, Zahir,' Akram muttered in the seething silence, ill at ease with the rare dark fury that had flared in his brother's face. 'I thought you had a right to know that she'd had the cheek to come here.'

'It's five years since I divorced her,' Zahir pointed out harshly, his lean strong face impassive. 'Why should I care what she does?'

'Because she's an embarrassment!' Akram rushed to declare. 'Imagine how you would feel if the media found out that she was once your wife! She must be shameless and without conscience to come to Maraban to make her stupid commercial!'

'This is all very emotive stuff, Akram,' Zahir countered, reluctantly touched by his brother's concern on his behalf. 'I'm grateful you told me but what do you expect me to do?'

'Throw her and her film crew out of Maraban!' his brother told him instantly.

'You are still young and impetuous, my brother,' Zahir replied drily. 'The paparazzi follow my ex-wife everywhere she goes. Try to picture the likely consequences of deporting a world-famous celebrity. Why would I want to create headlines to alert the world's media to a past that is more wisely left buried?'

When Akram had finally departed, still incredulous that his brother had failed to express a desire for retribution, Zahir made several phone calls that would have astonished the younger man. It was a supreme irony but Zahir's coolly astute brain was perpetually at all-out war with the volatile passion of his temperament. While it made no logical sense whatsoever he wanted the chance to see Sapphire in the flesh again. Did that desire imply that he still had some lingering need for closure where she was concerned? Or was it simple and natural curiosity because he was currently facing the prospect of having to take another wife? Once, in a desperate search for a solution to his seemingly incurable problems with Sapphire, Zahir had read books about all sorts of strange subjects before he finally accepted that the simplest explanation of the apparently inexplicable was usually the closest to the truth. Since then events in his ex-wife's life had suggested that his sceptical convictions about her true character were spot-on. He had wed a gold-digging social climber with not an atom of true feeling for him. After all, he was well aware that Sapphire was now cosily ensconced in a live-in relationship with the award-winning Scottish wildlife photographer, Cameron McDonald. Presumably she wasn't having any difficulty bedding him… Zahir's dark eyes burned afresh like golden flames at that incendiary thought.

Saffy dutifully angled her hot face into the flow of air gushing from the wind machine so that her mane of blonde hair wafted back in a cloud over her shoulders. Not an atom of her growing irritation and discomfort showed on her flawless features. Saffy was never less than professional when she was working. But how many times had her make-up already needed retouched in the stifling heat? It was simply melting off her face. How many times had the set security had to interrupt filming to make the crowd of over-excited spectators back away to give her colleagues the space to work? Coming to Maraban to film the Desert Ice cosmetics commercial had been a foolish mistake. The support systems the film crew took for granted were non-existent.

'Give me that sexy look, Saffy…' Dylan, the photographer, urged pleadingly. 'What is wrong with you this week? You're not on form—'

And as if someone had zapped her with an electrified cattle prod, Saffy struggled to switch on the expression he wanted because she hated the fact that anyone should have noticed that anything was amiss with her mood. Inside her head, she fought to focus on the fantasy that never failed to ignite that much vaunted look of desire on her face. So ironic, she reflected momentarily, so very cruelly ironic that she should have to focus on what she had often dreamt of and never yet managed to experience in reality. But when she was working a shoot costing her clients thousands of pounds was not the time to allow all that old bad stuff to resurface. With the strong determination that was the backbone of her temperament, Saffy forced the distressing memories back down into her subconscious again and then mentally searched to extract the required familiar image: a man with jet-black hair down to his broad brown shoulders, a man who positively oozed raw animal magnetism from every pore with a lean powerfully naked body encased in warm gilded skin. In every image he would slowly turn his head to look at her, revealing fiercely stunning eyes of gold surrounded by black lashes so lush they acted like eye liner on a guy already so savagely masculine and passionate that at one glance he took her breath away. And all those wretched frustrating responses swam back through her taut body in a wave, her nipples beading below the scrap of silk she wore, her entire body dampening with shocking awareness.

'That's it…that's exactly it!' Dylan crooned in enthusiasm, leaping around her posed figure to take photos from different angles as she shifted position with languorous ease, that image inside her head like an indelible tattoo below her skin. 'Lower your lids a little more—we want to see that eye shadow…brilliant, sweetheart, now pout that gorgeous mouth…'

A couple of minutes passed before with a tiny jerk of displacement, Saffy returned to the present and was suddenly plunged back into the heat, the noise and the curious crowds, her huge bluer-than-blue eyes reflecting her discomfiture at the massive attention they were attracting. But Dylan had got the shots he wanted and he leapt around like a maniac punching the air with satisfaction. Her single-minded concentration on her role gone now, she looked out above the crowds and saw a vehicle parked at the height of a giant rolling ochre-coloured sand dune with a robed figure standing nearby holding something in his hand that glinted in the sun.

Zahir had his high-definition binoculars trained on his stunningly beautiful ex-wife. With her glorious mane of golden hair blowing back from her face like a sheet of gleaming silk and seated atop a pile of giant fake ice cubes, she would have looked spectacularly eye-catching by any standards. But in the beauty stakes, Sapphire occupied a category all of her own and the sight of her took Zahir's hot-blooded temper to new and dangerous heights. He was outraged that she was appearing in public in Maraban clad in only a couple of scraps of azure silk that displayed the surprisingly bountiful mounds of her breasts, the smooth skin of her now bejewelled midriff and the incredible svelte stretch of her very long and perfect legs.

He watched the men involved in the shoot dart slavishly around Sapphire, offering her drinks and food and fussing with her hair and her face, and he wondered with vicious coarseness which of them had had the pleasure of her beautiful body. After all, she might live with Cameron McDonald, but the UK tabloids had, nonetheless, exposed the fact that she had had several affairs with other men. Clearly she was anything but a faithful lover. Of course, it was possible that Cameron and Sapphire enjoyed a civilly negotiated 'open' relationship, but Zahir was not impressed by that possibility or even by the concept of open relationships. He didn't sleep around, he had never slept around even when he finally had the freedom to make such choices. His ex-wife had to be a bit of a slut, he decided with dark brooding bitterness, his lean strong face set granite hard at the acknowledgement. He had married an embryo slut and, worst of all, she was a slut he still lusted after. At that final disturbing admission, Zahir ground his even white teeth while perspiration beaded his upper lip, his tall, powerful body furiously tense and aggressively aroused by his perusal of that perfect body and even more perfect face.

Sapphire, the one mistake he had ever made and the payback had been unforgettably brutal. He had endured indescribable punishment to keep her as his wife for even a year. She owed him, she definitely owed him for twelve months of unadulterated hell. Add in the millions she had received from him since the charade of their marriage finally ran aground in a divorce and he had every right to feel ill-done by, every right to still be aggrieved and hostile. She had used and abused him before walking away unharmed and considerably richer. Maybe it was finally payback time, Zahir reflected grimly, his adrenalin spiking at the idea. And bearing in mind that she and her film crew had chosen to come to Maraban and film without the permission of the relevant authority, she had put herself and her precious high-flying career in his power. And the very thought of Sapphire being in his power was the most seductive image that Zahir had indulged in for years. He lowered the binoculars, thinking fast, squashing the disconcerting logical objections already trying to assail him to persuade him to restrain his primal responses. It wouldn't be the same between them now, he reasoned angrily; he was not the same man. This time around he had the weapons to make her want him back.

That process of self-persuasion was incredibly seductive. Throughout his life Zahir had very rarely done what he wanted to do, for the necessity of always considering the needs of others had taken precedence. But why shouldn't he put his own desires first for once? He had already checked Sapphire's schedule and she was due to leave Maraban within hours, an awareness that merely made him all the more single-minded. Zahir made his plans there and then with ruthless cool and the same kind of fierce, almost suicidal resolution that had once persuaded him to take a foreign wife without first asking his despotic father's permission. As that reality and comparison briefly occurred to him he stubbornly suppressed the piercing shard of unease it awakened.

One of the best!

This is one of Lynne Graham's best - and I say that as an absolute NON-fan of sheikh stories (it makes me uncomfortable that the sheikh's are so westernized in character). Both characters are strong and their actions understandable in the context of the story. They come together again after a divorce that came about as the result of painful circumstances and their own emotional inexperience. These are characters you come to care about and we are brought through their new relationship understanding both their trepidation and desire to be together. The story is passionate and tender, a real break from the domineering male and push-over heroine who loses her ability to think because she so sexually enthralled to the hero. If I was trying to get someone interested in reading HP, this would be one of the few books I would suggest they read.

An enjoyable read!

Things were different in Maraban five years prior when Prince Zahir took a Westerner as his bride. His then wife, Sapphire, was made a virtual prisoner and hidden from public view. No-one outside of the royal family even knew they were married.

Sapphire learned on her wedding night that she had massive intimacy issues. Between that and Zahir's frequent and extended absences, their one-year marriage was never consummated. When he divorced her and sent her back to London, she felt betrayed and plain not good enough.

In the five years they spent apart, Zahir took the throne, and Sapphire became a well-respected model. Zahir hadn't been surprised, after all, she had taken millions of his dollars to make a name for herself. She hadn't been able to give herself to him, but now the papers had her living with one man, while being seen in the company of many others.

To be fair, Sapphire also read many reports of Zahir's exploits and understood the fault in their relationship had lain with her. She only learned about the trauma she suffered as a child after her return to London, and was almost ready to take the next step after much therapy and dealing with her issues.

When one of her photo shoot's location changes unexpectedly, she finds herself again in Maraban. Zahir is informed of her presence and uses a loophole to whisk her away for the weekend. He feels things were left unfinished and needs closure.

Sapphire is incensed when she sees Zahir again. Even more so when he tells her that he's confiscated her film and arranged with her employers for her to stay with him for two days. She knows he won't force himself on her, but he knows there's an attraction between them and uses it to get close to her. If only they'd known the repercussions from that weekend... well, they'd do it all over again.

Until I learned the background about the year-long unconsummated marriage, I thought things were a little too soap-opera-y, but it makes complete sense as you get further into the book. There were quite a few pangs of hurt felt when I read about their suffering, both during the first marriage, and their five-year separation. The story felt a tiny bit rushed at the end, but for the most part, I really enjoyed it.

a year long unconsummated marriage?

Lynne Graham does some over the top feather brain novels and this is one of them. From H's routine beatings from demented father because father is outraged Zahir married a western woman to h suffering from vaginismus. Graham's ridiculous foray into physco-therapy consisting of h having muscle relaxant injections, with dilator inserted whilst she is unconscious and sleeps overnights with said inserted dilators. Not to mention Grahams needs to spice up her obviously boring life by writing tacky step-father sexual abuse when h was only seven.

Zahir is a beautiful beautiful man/Hero but this novel is ridiculously tacky.

Sones returns to the Hollywood setting of her affecting verse novel One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies (2004) for this partially successful study in narrative unreliability.

Almost 16, Colette is not looking forward to summer, which she will spend babysitting her 7-year-old brother, Will, in San Luis Obispo, where their actress mother will be on location. In classically narcissistic fashion, their mother instantly hooks up with her co-star, so Colette spends even more time than she expected playing Hungry Hungry Totally Annoying Hippos with Will, who is credulity-stretchingly adorable (“your ath will be grath,” he mock-warns her). Things start looking up when gorgeous Connor, a motorcycle-riding local, bumps into Colette and Will at the farmers market. In seemingly no time, Colette and Connor have a hot-and-heavy flirtation going on around the babysitting. Sones again employs the verse form that has served her well in the past, the one- and occasionally two-page poems keeping pages flipping. Colette is “a big fat / liar” who spins fib after fib, only to contradict it at the very beginning of the next poem. It’s a technique that works well as the characters and plot are becoming established, but readers may find it wearing as what was a frothy romance turns into a cautionary tale, one that leaves Colette sadder, wiser and less interesting.

for him, she worries that her lies might destroy their relationship, especially because

to be perfectly honest... I LOVED THIS BOOK

I literaly just finished this book and at first I didn't believe anything she said and anyone who has read To Be Perfectly Honest knows exactly why. :) Even the seen where she meets her dream boy over again I thought was all just a big reinventing reality seen again. Cuz we all know she just loves lying like crazy it's just what she does. :) I loved Connar until the jerk had to go and do... all that... well maybe I shouldn't say but just u wait.

I ABSOLUTLY LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!and hopefully u will too. :) :) :)

Would I Lie?

I have a thing about unreliable narrators: I cannot get enough of them. And Colette is easily one of my favorites. Why? Because she's unreliable about being unreliable! She knows she's a big fat liar and then admits to her lies - or admits to the big ones anyway. You never know if she sneaks in a tiny lie and doesn't tell you about it because she admitted to all these other lies she told. So if she admits to the lies, what makes us think she would lie and not tell us about them. She's crafty. Maybe she admits to the big lies so she can sneak in little ones and we would be none the wiser.

I'm sorry. Did your head just explode?

Instead of spending the summer in Paris with friends as planned, her mother, a famous movie star, takes both her and her brother to a small town while she shoots her new movie. Facing a summer of boredom and babysitting Will, they soon meet Connor (a motorcycle-riding tiger-stripped-hair hunk of man meat) who might just make the summer bearable.

Honestly (ha!), I love Colette. I mean, I wouldn't want be her friend, but as a character I love her to pieces. She adores her younger brother, who has the cutest lisp ever and is far too observant for his young age, but also has that naivete about her that comes with adolescence and young love. She lies for the sake of lying, is proud of the lies she tells, and it doesn't seem to phase her when she does it. However, while perhaps not on such a grand scale, who among us hasn't lied about trivial things when we were teenagers?

Sonya did an amazing job with the verse poetry. Each poem flows into the other perfectly and you don't notice that you're reading verse. Even the formatting and stanzas contribute to the feel of the story. The way your eyes dance across each word and each line enhances both the plot and your reading experience.

An engaging story, To Be Perfectly Honest grabs hold of you from the beginning and continues to suck you into Colette's lies with every page. The unreliable narration is the magnetism that makes this story what it is, that makes you wonder where exactly the lies began.

A Fast, Fun and Quirky Read

Colette doesn't know who her dad is, nor does her little brother Will. Their mother is a movie star who has a habit of falling for her co-star, getting completely wrapped up in them and then dumping the guy when filming is over. It's no wonder Colette has learned to lie when telling the truth would serve her better. In fact, she's not always able to tell where truth ends and lies begin.
When Mom cancels the trip to Paris she's been pumped about for months, a trip that's supposed to be an awesome time with her three best friends, and instead drags her and Will off to San Luis Obispo where her new film is being shot, Colette is seriously bummed. She knows she'll get stuck babysitting Will while Mom jumps into another affair and constantly breaks her promises. Colette loves her little brother who has an adorable lisp because of teeth he recently lost, but but the fact remains that she's been shafted and her three friends blame her for the cancellation.
Mom decides to drive there in her Prius as a sort of bonding/environmental statement. Colette's zoned out until this amazing guy on a motorcycle pulls along side the car and stares into her eyes. Her imagination goes into overdrive and she begins to fantasize that the mystery guy on the bike has connected with her in some mystical way.
When Connor, the mysterious bike rider, reappears at the hotel where Colette is staying, she's thrilled, but is certain he'll dump her in a heartbeat if he knows she's only fifteen and who her mom really is. This results in both Colette and Will cranking up the lie machine which sets them and Connor on a wild ride where everyone is lying so much and so often that the truth doesn't stand a chance until the very end of the story.
Told in verse with some fabulous whoppers inserted to help readers understand how Colette has learned to cope with the crazy world she lives in, this is a funny and ultimately touching read. It's a book teens and mature tweens who have a sense of humor or who like a quirky romance will really enjoy. It's worth adding to any public or school library collection where offering teen readers a bit of the offbeat is important.

Elsie Keim has a wonderful family, a roof over her head, and a place to lay her head at night. While all her needs are provided for, there is something her family cannot give her - a normal life. From an early age, she has been afflicted by a disease that will eventually rob her of the ability to see. The disease has progressed to the point where she no longer dreams of a good life or that of a typical Amish wife. Her family is prepared to care for her the rest of her life, but all Elsie wants is a life she can never have. Who would want a damaged woman, anyway?

Landon Troyer has his entire life mapped out and planned to the tiniest detail. He has saved money and worked very hard to buy his own house and land, and all he needs is a capable wife to be his help meet. The only problem lies in finding that one woman that will fit in with all of his plans. So when he meets Elsie, it seems that everything is finally falling into place for him. But when troubling facts come to light, will he be disappointed with the truth? Or is love really worth paying the price of your dreams?

This final conclusion to the Days of Redemption series by Shelley Shepard Gray was the perfect ending to a story fraught with the realities of life. The resolution of family secrets is no easy task, but the Keim family sticks together even through the hard times. No matter what they face, they look to God and each other to get them through the rough road of redemption, forgiveness, and grace. This novel by Gray is a shining example of what it means to be a family through the most difficult of circumstances, and what it means to be truly loved. I really enjoyed this novel and series, and will be recommending it to others.

Ten years ago, Doktah Palmer fitted Elsie Keim with glasses enabling her to see. However, she is stunned by her New Order Amish family's reaction to her wearing glasses; leaving her self-esteem gutted by how they behave towards her. Over the next decade out of misguided love they treat her like a child, which has driven Elsie to conceal how bad her vision has become.

Now her sister Viola (see Daybreak) and brother Roman (see Ray of Light) have met their mates while Elsie remains at home still the helpless invalid hiding how bad her keratoconus condition has left her; as she rejects her loved ones' pity. Elsie and new neighbor Landon Troyer are attracted to each other, but she wants him to see her as a capable person so refuses to tell him that she is going blind. When Roman tells Landon, he fears his being away for extended business trips would leave his beloved helpless. He soon learns why she loathes her family's help, never asks anyone for assistance, and conceals her sight problem; but Landon's peace of mind needs his Elsie safe.

The final Days of Redemption Amish family drama is an engaging tale as each Keim member and their mates continue to struggle with issues though the prime focus is on Elsie's relationships with her loved ones built on how each acts towards her and her with them. Readers will enjoy this engaging tale as the heroine believes love is the real handicap.

Great conclusion to the series!

Eventide, by Shelley Shepard Gray, is the third book in The Days of Redemption series. I read the first two books and thought they were great, so I was excited to read Eventide.

Elsie Keim is a young adult Amish woman who lives with her large extended family. She has an eye disease that is slowly causing her to become blind, and because of this her family is very overprotective. Elsie's siblings have found love, and she wants the same but doesn't think any man would want her. She wants to be independent and for her family to stop coddling her.

A new young man lives in next door, handsome Landon Troyer. There is a spark between Elsie and Landon, and Elsie decides to keep her condition a secret. Will the truth come out, and will Landon still want a relationship with her? Will Elsie's family give her the space she wants?

Eventide was another wonderful story in the series. Shelley Shepard Gray is so talented at making you feel like you personally know the characters and feel for them. I didn't want the book to end! Also included in the book is a 'P.S.' section with 'About the Author', 'About the Book', and a sneak peek at Ms. Gray's next book!
