About the Author

Charlie Papazian is the founder of the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) and the Association of Brewers and the current president of the Brewers Association. The creator of the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup, he is the founding publisher of the magazines Zymurgy (for homebrewers) and The New Brewer (for professional craftbrewers). He lives in Boulder, Colorado, with his wife, Sandra, and daughter, Carla, where he still avidly homebrews lagers, ales, and honey meads.

My husband was advised to get this book by other home brewers both in classes and online. He has made some very respectable beer. Although the price of the book is very reasonable it created the need for quite an investment of other brew making equipment and products. Well whatever keeps him off the streets.

Great basic to intermediate resource!

When I started brewing I borrowed the 3rd edition from a friend to learn the ropes. I have now been brewing for 3 years and wanted to get this new edition mostly as a reference source. Its a great book with lots of basic info to get you up and brewing as well as some more advanced topics to help you fine tune and improve your beer. There are a few new tweaks in this edition, but I mostly use it to quickly review beer styles/ingredients/technical stuff.

This is the 4th time I have purchased this book. First was the 1st edition, then 3 copies of the second edition. I kept handing out copies for people to read and they never came back. Excellent book for the beginning home brewer and even a seasoned brewer. There is a lot of very well presented information garnished with levity and a lot of "Don't worry, have a home brew" philosophy.

With her help, Kitto discovers that a cave on the island holds the large treasure that his uncle had been planning to recover when his ship was attacked by pirates under the command of the vengeful Captain John Morris. When another group of pirates arrives, the ragtag group decides to join forces to outwit Morris, escape the island, and try to find Kitto's younger brother and uncle. This exciting tale has all of the essential elements of a grand adventure-a flamboyant, hook-handed pirate; bloody battles; hidden treasure; a vicious crocodile; and a peg-legged boy-and the inclusion of escaped slaves and Native Americans makes for a unique and well-rounded story. It doesn’t help that he and four others are stranded on an island where the landscape is rough. When a pirate crew lands on the island as well, things get heated, but Kitto finds a solution in the form of a common enemy and ties to the past that are buried deeper than buried treasure. With detailed prose, elementary school teacher Eames relays his characters’ fast-paced adventures with just the right blend of history and excitement. His greatest talent lies in delivering action sequences in a way that maintains momentum and delivers information, all with an eye toward historical accuracy.

EXCELLENT READ!!

Homeland: Carrie's Run is a prequel to the first season of Homeland. It tells a lot about her life, her mental illness, and her work in the Middle East and how she wound up working with the CIA. Since I am a big fan of the series, I thought the book was great, since it gives a lot of background info on Carrie.
I am hoping the writer does the same type book on the other major characters in the series.
I highly recommend this book if you're into Homeland!

I sincerely hope that Mr. Kaplan will continue writing Homeland books. This one is so good that you should not start reading it Mo-Fri as you will not want to do anything else, just read and wonder what will happen on next page.
It is breathtaking, vivid description of the Iraq war, I had my eyes wet when reading about those terrible atrocities.
This book would be great on screen, looking forward to see it sometimes.

Tiki Barber is a record-holding retired running back for the New York Giants. He married and is the father of four children.

Ronde Barber is a record-holding cornerback who retired after fifteen seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is one of only two cornerbacks selected to the Pro Bowl five times. He is married with two daughters.

Jump Shot 1 A NEW DOOR OPENS
“Thanks, man.” Ronde Barber exchanged an elaborate handshake with one of his many fans at Hidden Valley Junior High School.

“Yeah, dude, thanks a lot,” said Ronde’s identical twin, Tiki, slapping the boy on the back.

“No, thank you guys. For everything.”

Ronde didn’t even know the kid’s name. He didn’t know him, and he was pretty sure Tiki didn’t either.

It happened a lot like that. These days, in the second term of their last year at Hidden Valley Junior High, the Barber twins were “Big Men on Campus”—stars of the school’s history-making football team. The Eagles had been State Champions two years running and, this past season, owners of a perfect record.

Everyone knew their names all right, even at a big school like Hidden Valley. But there were plenty of kids whose names Tiki and Ronde didn’t know, or had forgotten.

It wasn’t that they were stuck up about their superhero status. Not at all. But it was hard to remember everyone’s name who knew yours, when yours had been plastered all over the school paper, the local TV news, the Roanoke Reporter, and even newspapers as far away as Richmond.

Remembering names wasn’t a big problem by any means. It was great being popular. The only real problem was, their football career at Hidden Valley was over. Ever since the final celebrations had ended, Ronde’s and Tiki’s lives had become more and more . . . well, boring. Oh, school was okay, and it was fun catching up on their favorite TV shows—but it was winter, and it was cold, and there was nothing really important going on in their lives anymore!

No practices to get their blood pumping. No video strategy sessions with the team to get their minds racing. No big games to look forward to every week.

It was only the end of January, but to Ronde, it felt like winter had been dragging on for months! And here they were, on a Thursday afternoon that had already turned dark by four o’clock, waiting to get into the gym so they could sit in the bleachers, crammed in with all their friends and those other kids whose names they didn’t even know or couldn’t remember . . . just to watch a basketball game!

Watching was not the same as playing, Ronde thought sadly. And basketball, while it was fun, was only the Barbers’ second-favorite sport. Besides, while Hidden Valley Junior High had always been a powerhouse in football, it had never done well in basketball. The team hadn’t won a league championship in forty years, and for five straight seasons, they’d fallen short of making the play-offs.

This year’s team was better than most, but their record was only about .500 at this point, midway through the season. And the only reason it wasn’t worse was the team’s all-star point guard, Sean Morton.

Sean was only in eighth grade, but he was already a league all-star, and was being talked about for the All-Virginia team. Sean—or “Sugar,” as everyone called him for his sweet jump shot—was averaging twenty points a game, and his brilliant ball-handling was reason enough to come see an Eagles game.

So the bleachers were packed. And most of them were here not so much to root for the team, as to see “Sugar” put up some serious numbers.

“I can’t believe this is the first game we’ve been to this year,” Tiki said as they climbed up into the bleachers and found two seats together, way back near the top row.

“I know,” Ronde said, sitting down. “It’s weird being in the stands, watching the game.”

“Tell me about it.” Tiki reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a bag of peanuts. “Want some?”

Ronde cupped his palm and caught the peanuts just as the game began. Sugar, wearing number 1 on the back of his uniform, with EAGLES on the front in capital letters, caught the tip-off and dribbled upcourt. His ball-handling was impressive—fancy moves, a through-the-knees fake, then a no-look pass to the shooting guard, Brian Reynolds. Reynolds, with a clear look at the basket, put up a shot—and missed.

Sugar groaned out loud, shook his head, and made a face before retreating back upcourt.

Reynolds was slow getting back, and the player he was supposed to be guarding sank an easy running layup to start the scoring.

“Come on!” Sugar shouted, gesturing for Reynolds to kick it into gear.

Ronde looked at Tiki, who returned his gaze. Like many sets of identical twins, they often found that they were thinking the same thing at the same time. Right now was one of those times. Ronde knew Tiki was also thinking about Cody Hansen, their quarterback on the Eagles when they were in eighth grade.

Cody used to yell at his teammates like that. And it never worked, either.

Sure enough, these basketball Eagles soon found themselves trailing badly. And the more they fell behind, the more Sugar Morton held on to his dribble, taking most of the shots himself, and not including his teammates much. The rest of the Eagles seemed to be moving a step slower than Sugar. Slower than their opponents, the Colts of Martinsville Junior High, as well.

By halftime, Sugar had scored twenty-two points, but the rest of the Eagles had managed a paltry five. That made the score 36–27, Patriots. Thirty-six was a lot of points for one half, showing that the Eagles were barely bothering to play defense.

“Sure glad we’re not in that locker room,” Tiki said as they waited for the second half to start.

“Yeah. We were lucky. At least we were always in the hunt for a play-off spot,” Ronde said.

“These guys’ll never make it, the way they’re going. They’ll be lucky to finish over .500.”

“Yeah, and they should be much better, with a guy like Sugar chuckin’ it up there like that.”

“Oh, well,” Tiki said, shrugging. “Not much we can do about it from up here.”

The second half began with Sugar on the bench, steaming about something. Probably the way his teammates are playing, thought Ronde.

When Sugar finally got back in the game, the Eagles were trailing by fifteen points. He proceeded to put on a one-man show, sinking shot after shot, even though the Colts were constantly double-teaming him.

“He’s got an open man!” Tiki shouted more than once. But Sugar never seemed to want to let go of the ball unless he was launching it toward the basket.

In the end, he made the score fairly close—67–63—but the Eagles still wound up on the short end of the stick.

Tiki and Ronde left the gym along with the rest of the crowd. They crossed the parking lot and kept walking, headed for the public bus stop a block farther down James Street. It wasn’t the time of year to be riding bikes—too cold for that—and there were no school buses this late in the day.

Riding home, the brothers didn’t say much at first. Each was absorbed in his own private thoughts. Finally, Tiki muttered, “Man, this really rots, you know?”

Ronde knew what he meant. “Not being part of the team anymore? Yeah. I know.”

“Life’s just not the same. It’s like something’s missing.”

“Well, we’ve still got classes,” Ronde said. “And you’re gonna be writing your advice column for the school newspaper.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me,” Tiki said, making a face. “I wish I’d never promised Laura I’d do that after the season ended.” Laura Sommer was the editor and publisher of the Hidden Valley Gazette, which she had turned from a one-page handout to a real, twice-monthly newspaper that the whole school looked forward to reading.

“Point is, you promised her you’d do it,” Ronde said. “And while you’re at it, who knows, you might wind up helping somebody out there.”

“Yeah, right,” Tiki said, dismissing the thought.

But Ronde could tell he’d made his point. “Besides, there’s also the job at Mr. Landzberg’s warehouse,” he said. “He offered us twenty hours a week, and said we could split the job between us if we wanted. That could end up being a lot of money.”

Justin Landzberg had been a teammate of theirs on the Eagles, and his dad owned a local department store with its own warehouse. “They always need stockboys,” Justin told them when they informed him that they were fourteen now, and able to get working papers.

Tiki and Ronde’s mom worked two jobs. Times were tough in Roanoke, and it was hard for a single mom to make enough money to bring the boys up and pay all the bills. The twins had always wanted to help by contributing to the family budget, but until now, they’d been too young.

“I guess you’re right,” Tiki said, still thinking about their days of glory on the football field. “I mean, all things come to an end, right? Even the best things.”

“It was the best, wasn’t it?” Ronde remembered with a smile. “They can never take those championships away from us.”

“Or that perfect season.”

“Or all those great plays . . .”

“All the comebacks . . .”

They both sighed, and fell silent again.

“I’m never gonna forget it,” Tiki finally said. “Even if we make it to the NFL.”

Ronde gave him a playful shove. “What do you mean, ‘if’?”

“Still,” Tiki said as their stop approached. “I wish we had something fun to do between now and next fall.”

“You never know,” Ronde said as they got off the bus. “Something might turn up tomorrow morning.”

Little did he know how right he was.

“Yo! Ronde!”

Ronde turned from his locker to see Mr. Jackson coming toward him. Mr. Jackson was his science teacher, and immediately Ronde thought he must have messed up on the latest quiz or homework assignment. But the smile on Mr. Jackson’s face told a different story.

“What’d I do?” Ronde blurted out.

“Nothing! What are you worried about?” Mr. Jackson said with a chuckle. “Last I looked, you were running an A minus.”

Ronde beamed. He was good at science, and proud of it too.

Mr. Jackson’s smile faded. “Look, Ronde, you got a minute? I need to talk to you about something. Or you could come to my office fourth period. You have lunch fourth period, right?”

“We can talk now,” Ronde said. “I’ve got study hall.”

“Good, good,” said Mr. Jackson. “Let’s sit on that bench over there in the lobby. It’ll quiet down soon as passing’s over.”

Two minutes later, the halls had emptied, and they could hear themselves think. “Here’s the thing,” Mr. Jackson began. “It’s about the team, basically. I’ve got a problem I’m hoping you or your brother can help me with.”

In his panic about his science grades, Ronde had forgotten that in addition to being his science teacher, Mr. Jackson was also Hidden Valley’s basketball coach.

“The team is in trouble,” Mr. Jackson said. “And now I come to find out that Brian Reynolds is transferring out; going to military school, starting Monday.”

“Whoa. That’s too bad,” Ronde said. Brian was the team’s starting shooting guard. He scored more points than anyone on the squad except Sugar. “But—”

“But how can you help? That’s what I was about to ask you!” Mr. Jackson’s smile returned. “I can move Rory Mathis up to starter. But now I’ve got an opening on my bench, with no obvious candidates to fill it. So I’m asking myself, ‘Who at this school might be good at basketball, but didn’t try out for the team, for whatever reason. . . .’ ”

In the silence, Ronde realized what Mr. Jackson was offering. “You mean us?”

Mr. Jackson put both hands out, palms up. “I didn’t call you aside just to chat.”

Ronde swallowed hard. His heart was suddenly racing with excitement, but he tried not to show just how eager he was.

“You know, I’m sure we’d be interested, Mr. J. We’re always playing one-on-one in the driveway, you know, and we can handle the ball pretty well. Although neither of us is a great shooter,” he warned, not wanting the coach to get too hopeful. After all, Mr. Jackson was asking them to fill in for a shooting guard, wasn’t he?

“Well, I understand why you both never came out for tryouts,” Jackson said. “I know Coach Wheeler didn’t want either of you getting hurt doing any other sports.”

Ronde nodded. It was true. Football had always been the most important thing to him and Tiki. It was true that they often played hoops in their driveway, although not “always,” as he’d told Mr. Jackson. They’d played some pick-up baseball too, in summer, and run races against each other for fun, just like any two athletic brothers on planet Earth.

But joining the basketball team was another step up, for sure. Why shouldn’t they try their hand at other sports, now that they didn’t have to worry about football until high school? In fact, Ronde made a mental note, right then and there, to try out for the baseball team in early March.

“Don’t misunderstand me,” Mr. Jackson said, holding up a hand. “I’ve only got one spot on the roster. I’ll leave it up to you and Tiki which of you wants to give it a try.”

Ronde froze, with his jaw wide open. He’d been about to say something else, but now, for the life of him, he couldn’t remember what it was.

Only one of them was going to be on the basketball team?

Absolutely Fantastic, Worth Every Penny!

Call the Shots is fun, full of great characters, and is just a great light hearted read. Calame has done a fantastic job maintaining the perfect balance of awkward teenager and relatable/likable character. Of course readers of the previous two books in the series, Swim the Fly and Beat the Band, will rejoice in seeing their favorite rag-tag group of teens back again in this seemingly final book in the trilogy.

Of course, while I recommend to read the books in the order they were released, Calame has created a series where if necessary each book could stand on its own, perfect for readers to jump in at any moment.

Of course, besides fun characters, readers will crack up with Coop's insane plans, which in past books has included everything from going to a nude beach (and seeing things they all wish they could forget), joining battle of the bands when none of them know how to play an instrument, and now in Call the Shots, shooting a horror movie on a $1000 budget to win at terror fest, a horror film festival in New York.

Really this book is fantastic for anyone looking for a light engaging read, where you'll relate to the characters, have fun following in their insane plans, and be glued until the last page. All in all a great read that I'd easily recommend.

This book is and isn't like Moby Dick

How this book is like Moby Dick: the word dick, or synonyms, are used frequently. The protagonist suffers. It's an adventure story. Destined to become a classic.

How this book is not like Moby Dick: it's more entertaining, funnier, and occasionally crude and lewd -which makes it a much better read for a teenage boy. Or an adult man, with the brain of the teenage boy - which apparently is most of them.

If you are a fundamentalist, you will be offended, and this book is not for you. But for those with an open mind, you will find that it's well-written, full of heart and it does a wonderful job of depicting both the agony and ecstasy of being a teenager. It's essentially a book about friendship, longing, and growing up. I laughed out loud, and also found it very moving at times.

I will definitely buy and read the first two books in this series.

Sean's turn to narrate, and it doesn't disappoint. Hilarious.

After Swim the Fly and Beat the Band, I figured I'd be in for a treat when it was Sean's turn to narrate - and Call the Shots didn't disappoint. There are the elements that made the first two great: over-the-top, funny-as-sh** situations (many involving bathroom humor, which I'm a sucker for), an nearly impossible goal, the ceaseless pursuit of girls, and the endless new vocabulary for bodily functions/body parts/etc. But most of all I couldn't wait to see the friends do what great friends do best: have each others' backs, make each other laugh, and really love each other. I nearly cried at the end of this one, saying goodbye to these three goofballs.

My 4 year old has taken a liking to chapter books so after finishing the Magic Tree House collection, I was looking for another series that was wholesome yet interesting. The Box Car Children series is just that with a mystery in each book that the four youngsters (and sometimes their grandfather) work to solve. The language is sometimes old-fashioned and the stories take a little more time to get traction but my son enjoys them and I enjoy reading them too him!

The Mystery in the Sand

This book was about four kids Jessie, Benny, and Violiet . Those four kids like mysteries. One day Benny finds a locket and decides to find the out who it belongs to. I thought this mystery was great . I think mysteries are fun to solve. Based on interviews with 100 middle-class women, Heyn (The Erotic Silence of the American Wife) explores yet another classification of dysfunctional males. Drama Kings are defined as men who have remained "[s]tuck in a my-needs-come-first understanding of relationships." According to the author, women are getting stronger while Drama Kings, afraid of attachment and commitment, create scenes that sabotage intimacy. Heyn presents four categories of these losers, but their descriptions sound like old complaints about men forced into new packaging. The Visitor is a loner who believes "the way to a woman's heart is through her genitals." The Proprietor is a jealous bully who demands constant attention. In contrast, the Easy-going Guy makes up fake girlfriends in order to avoid moving forward in a relationship. The Hit and Run Lover pretends to want closeness, but leaves without warning if there is the smallest problem. Heyn's upbeat message is that, although women can be tricked by Drama Kings, they often leave them, emerging stronger from the encounter and ready for an independent life. Self-help devotees may be engaged by the author's anecdotal style, but her stance that she is writing a feminist text to support strong women rather than a simple relationship guide is not fully convincing .

About the Author

Dalma Heyn, who earned her master’s degree in social work at New York University, has been writing about love, marriage and relationships for twenty-five years. She is the bestselling author of The Erotic Silence of the American Wife, Marriage Shock, and Drama Kings, as well as the host of the regionally broadcast television program The Love Goddess Show. She is the former editor in chief of Health magazine, executive editor of McCall’s, and columnist for Mademoiselle and New Woman. It's Oxygen!

I've always believed that one's sharpest criticisms of others are really truest of oneself, and the previous reviewer of this book, Ellie Reasoner, provides a comic example of that. She said that DRAMA KINGS "set off to validate its own agenda and that's what it did." But, actually, that's what SHE did. It looks like she decided in advance what kind of book this is and then didn't bother to read it. Because actually, Dalma Heyn quite agrees with Reasoner. She doesn't remotely "expect a relationship to contain no flaws," she's not recommending trying to "change the behavior of any man," she doesn't claim that ALL men are "Drama Kings," and her bottom line, too, is, "if he's a jerk, get out of the relationship . . . ditch and move on." If you're in your 30s or 40s, strong, independent, eager to be interdependent, and DATING, you'll run into a lot of "drama kings" simply because that's what's left out there. There are plenty of great men, but naturally they're almost all taken!

To me, Heyn's work is oxygen. It's the only place I know where I can still find, in utterly contemporary form, the exhilaration I felt at the very beginning of feminism -- before it got all militant and strident and dogmatic, when it was just pure discovery, and recognition, and expression of the paralyzingly inexpressible. When it was spell-unbinding.

Heyn's first two books were about the mysterious loss of self that women in the 1980s and '90s still often experienced in their relationships with men, especially in marriage. "Marriage Shock" was about the asexual domesticity and dependency that could descend on a vital, independent young woman at the altar or soon after, and its roots in a long-ago historical moment when women's very survival came to depend on pleasing a man. "The Erotic Silence of the American Wife" was about how an affair could be, to paraphrase Kafka, the axe that shattered that frozen sea. It wasn't that the SEX in affairs was fresh and forbidden and therefore hot. It was that the SELF in affairs was natural and uncensored. What happened to women in marriage wasn't their husbands' fault. It was a kind of cultural spell that possessed and dispossessed them both.

Both books were perceived as dangerous. I remember being surprised by the wild misfit between the reviews and what was in the books. Heyn's honesty seemed to panic people to the point where they couldn't hear what she was actually saying. When "Erotic Silence" came out, she was pilloried for advocating affairs -- when what she really advocated was going into marriage with your eyes open to the danger, so you wouldn't lose yourself in the first place. With "Marriage Shock," she was attacked for encouraging women to walk out of marriage -- when all she had done was, first, point out that young women, who had already known the taste of self-possession, were in fact walking out of marriages earlier and earlier; and then, suggest that the way to save marriage was to make it hospitable to whole women.

The news in DRAMA KINGS is that women are just about past that now. They no longer give themselves up in love for much longer than a heartbeat. Instead, they try to give themselves -- huge difference! -- but often to men who are faking rather than taking, "20th-century men" who are attracted to 21st-century women's new strength yet are also driven to sabotage it. When these relationships don't work out, the women Heyn interviewed don't feel like victims. They absorb the experience and stride onward, stronger. Having loved, they're augmented rather than diminished, and readier for the reciprocal real thing if and when it comes along. If it doesn't -- well, they'll marry life!

This book is the exact opposite of all those shrill and gloomy jeremiads -- Maureen Dowd's being the latest -- about how women are paying a high price for having snatched the forbidden fruit of ambition and independence; how if you're educated and over 40 you're more likely to be struck by lightning than to find a man. "Women don't need men any more," Dal says. "They just want them." And that makes all the difference.

3.50 stars - Been there done that

At first, I really thought this was going to be a great book. The female author has a great tone and tongue and cheeek way of writing but...its just "okay". It is not deserving of all of the 5-star reviews that I see on here. In a nutshell, "Drama Kings" does not provide enough info on how to identify this behavior or how to disengage yourself from such an individual. Some reviewers seem to think that contents of this book are groundbreaking -- hardly. This book is about commitment-phobic men. It is material that has been covered in a hundred or so other books. This book would be good for a book club reading as it will definitely provoke discussion, however if you are really interested in this topic, I would strongly recommend reading "Men Who Can't Love" by Steven Carter & Julia Sokol.

Drama Kings

"Drama Kings: The Men Who Drive Strong Women Crazy" by Dalma Heyn is a great "can't put down" read, albeit a potentially uncomfortabe one for those women who are currently involved with and feel stuck in a relationship with someone who manifests the signs of a Drama King. Regardless of one's status, I believe that most, if not all women, will recognize the various syndromes, unfortunately, because they no doubt have experienced

the confusion and disappointments that accompany a relationship with a Drama King, regardless of type.

And, while delving into these issues may be neither a welcome or a pleasant diversion (far easier to just ignore the Drama King signs and hunker down with the familiar), the theories set forth in the book will give any woman with some intelligence a wake-up call in terms of evaluating her own dissatisfaction and what she can do to transform it into something positive, which for the healthy woman with self-esteem most likely would lead to termination of the relationship and moving on, whether as an independent, self-sufficient person or in a relationship with a more highly evolved man.

The book may be revolutionary in it analyses but, notwithstanding the discomfort it may potentially create, the read is well worth the effort, regardless of what a woman may elect to do in the future. In my own view, I think that Drama Kings should be read by every young woman about to embark on a relationship because it will give her the appropriate tools with which to assess a potential relationship as well as by those women who are frustrated in their attempts to make their current relationships more satisfying and meaningful. Hopefully, it will become a classic among womens' literature.
