The Styx, by Jonathon King

A powerful historical novel of greed, murder, and conspiracy set in turn-of-the-century Palm Beach

The Great Migration of the 1890s remade south Florida as Northern developers, former sharecroppers, and recent immigrants rushed to the state to seek their fortunes. Sitting atop it all was the Royal Poinciana Hotel, built on the shores of Palm Beach by real estate tycoon Henry Flagler. Nearby was the Styx, an African American community that housed many of the Royal Poinciana’s 1,200 workers. Shortly after the hotel’s completion, the Styx would be mysteriously burned to the ground in a tragedy clouded for generations by rumor and myth—until now. Riveting and suspenseful, The Styx is a historical novel that brings to life the frenzy of Reconstruction-era Florida, the racial tensions simmering beneath the surface, and the events that changed one community forever. This ebook contains an illustrated biography of the author featuring never-before-seen photos.

The Styx RULES!
By A. Hallonquist
I've long been a fan of Jonathon King. Now I am more than a fan, I am a die hard fan.

I spent this long weekend curled up with this book. The first chapter was a little difficult for me, as I'm used to more contemporary writings. This book takes place around 1903 in Palm Beach and West Palm Beach.

But once I got going, I couldn't put it down and finished it today! King's writing style nailed the era perfectly; the New York Irish ex Cop now Pinkerton man, Palm Beach snooty society (that hasn't changed) and beginning of settling the area with it's dirty little secrets (racism for one).

King has outdone himself and this is by far, one of the best books I've read in, well, I can't remember. Being a native Floridian with family that was here since 1919, it brought back many memories of stories my family passed along.

I can see a sequel for Mr. Byrne as well.

I certainly hope so.

Thank you Mr. King!

Riveting
By J. P. Weimer
I am a long-term fan of Jonathon King's novels--specifically, the Max Freeman novels such as "The Blue Edge of Midnight", "A Visible Darkness", "Eye of Vengence", etc. I've been periphereally aware of "The Styx" for some time, but could never find it anywhere until just recently, via Amazon. I'm not sure where "The Styx" falls chronologically within the pantheon of King's novels--i.e., the first, somewhere in the middle, whatever, but it is certainly a different kind of book than the Max Freeman tales. However, it is a riveting story that revolves around the destruction of a black community, the Styx, at the turn of the 20th Century when the land rush to Florida was in full bloom. There's an engrossing mystery plot, anchored by a vivid description of the various social strata of that era and of the racism and greed that prevailed.

Murder mystery set against the background of the early 1900s Florida land grab
By Terreciel
I am not sure how historically accurate this book really is, but it sounds plausible. Certainly there were land grabs in places that were just being settled and robber baron railroad tycoon developers to whom the law didn't apply. This aspect was, in my opinion, the best part of the story.

The story alternates mainly between the points of view of a NY Irish ex-cop turned Pinkerton agent and the impulsive, unconventional genteel daughter of the hotel manager of a luxurious hotel in Palm Beach. The Pinkerton agent gets an assignment to be a personal bodyguard for a rich railroad baron/land developer as he travels from NY to Florida. The agent has his own motive for the journey: to find his brother in Florida.

Meanwhile, the shanty town in which the Negros live, most of whom work as staff at the luxury hotel, burns to the ground while all the staff has been generously given the night off to go to a carnival. In addition, a body is found in the burned wreckage, a white gentleman.

The manager's daughter sets off to find out the why/how/who of the fire and the murder. The Pinkerton agent's search for his brother starts to cross paths with the daughter in her mission to discover the truth of the tragic occurrence. Of course they become attracted to each other. The mystery takes the necessary twists and turns, but about 3/4 of the way through, I started having a hard time believing that a young genteel woman in a highly structured society would be allowed to get away with the things she does in her quest to find the arsonist and murderer. In light of the way the story is presented, the ending is unbelievable. Not in a good way, just plain unbelievable.

I've never read anything by Jonathan King before. He seems to be a highly regarded mystery writer, although other readers have commented that The Styx is somewhat of a departure from his other books. Even though the ending is unsatisfying, the majority of the book makes it worth investing a few free hours in.
