Review
“An absorbing, sometimes penetrating, and sometimes improbable story . . . It is a tribute to Miss West’s large equipment as a writer that she can mingle all three of these themes in the development of one woman without upsetting the balance of her book or the destiny of her heroine.” —The New York Times
About the Author
Dame Rebecca West (1892–1983) is one of the most critically acclaimed English novelists, journalists, and literary critics of the twentieth century. Uniquely wide-ranging in subject matter and breathtakingly intelligent in her ability to take on the oldest and knottiest problems of human relations, West was a thoroughly entertaining public intellectual. In her eleven novels, beginning with The Return of the Soldier, she explored topics including feminism, socialism, love, betrayal, and identity. West’s prolific journalistic works include her coverage of the Nuremberg trials for the New Yorker, published as A Train of Powder, and Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, her epic study of Yugoslavia. She had a son with H.G. Wells, and later married banker Henry Maxwell Andrews, continuing to write, and publish, until she died in London at age ninety.

A Thinking Person's Romance
By A Customer
West is at her most impressive in this little-known but gorgeous novel. Described as one of the first and few genuine "novel of ideas" written by a woman, this is a profound exploration of human emotions, choices and the interplay of fate and free will. It is also a delightful, quirky love story, with an accessible and funny plot and two endearing main characters.
Isabel is a bored, rich, beautiful American woman living a life of luxury in Paris, where excitement comes in the form of a hot-tempered French lover. Vain, snobbish, yet highly sympathetic, Isabel is also fiercely intelligent and in desperate quest of something more from life than pretty clothes and feckless men -- enjoyable as they have been.
Deciding to settle down and pursue a solid life plan, she ends up getting married -- by accident. How this "accident" happens, you'll have to read the book, it's marvelously done and provides the book's key plot point. Suffice it to say, neither the marriage nor its outcome are predictable in the least. Nothing is "traditionally" romantic in any sense. Yet the novel is deeply satisfying, both emotionally and intellectually. the alughter that it evokes is of a particularly rich and knowing quality; it will linger long in your memory after reading it.

Not your normal love story, but a great romance
By M K Temple
I'd read this book years ago, before our public library started selling off everything that wasn't checked out at least twice a month, and was delighted to find a Kindle edition. West may no longer be the most underrated writer of the twentieth century, but she still deserves attention. The Thinking Read is (ahem) a Different Kind of Love Story. Isabelle Tarry is, like Jane Austen's Emma, a potentially unlikable protagonist: beautiful, rich, and smart. She tries to live according to reason (which, the narrator hints early on, is not a good idea), only to collide violently with irrational, i.e., normal, men. In order to rid herself of a trophy boyfriend who insists they're going to get married, to free herself for a Southern gentleman (the reader may realize, though Isabelle doesn't, that he makes Ashley Wilkes look like Rhett Butler!), she forces herself into behaving badly, only to end up with The Last Man on Earth, a fat, funny, volatile industrialist, one of the least likely romantic heroes in the past or any century (think casting the late, great John Belushi as Henry Ford). The romance begins after marriage: will Isabelle save herself, and Marc, from their decadent 1920s expat crowd to have them become serious French citizens and true lovers? Incidentally, the milieu of this story is that of some of F. Scott Fitzgerald's more depressing stories ("Alas, Babylon"), but West is funnier and more realistic. And, like Austen, probably not a very nice lady in real life, but an immortal artist.

Romantic novel by Rebecca West
By Robin E. Moore
From the bookjacket; "The brillant story of an American woman and her search for a place in the gay, barbaric world of pre-depression Europe." Isabelle Torry, whose story this really is, is a young American widow who has come to Paris to make over her life. In both breeding and character she is exquisitely poised, a woman who never acts in haste or anger, and in reshaping her future she is not of a mind to reshape herself. Almost from the first, however, Paris has meant a love affair with the handsome and secure Andre de Verviers, a fellow so conservative in all important matters of life that he is incurably violent in all trivial ones. Andre's playful melodramas are not to Isabelle's taste, and she determines to break with him and marry an urbane, scholarly American, Laurence Vernon, who has come to Paris to propose. But to break with Andre is not easy, and Isabelle is forced to contrive a melodrama of her own, which unhappily is witnessed by Laurence, and so shocks his values that he is pulled up short. At this moment when she must hold her head high, Isabelle agrees to marry a pudgy French industrialist named Marc Sallafranque, whom she likes greatly, but with whom she is not the least bit in love.
