Amazon.com Review
After a brief breather in book three (Lucinda's Secret), the Spiderwick Chronicles heat up with doppelgangers, then dwarves, then a dastardly double-cross, as this five-part series approaches its dramatic end.

The Grace kids (9-year-old twins Simon and Jared, and 13-year-old Mallory) might think that things have finally quieted down for them, but the nefarious faerie world has many more surprises in store. In the second chapter, titled, "IN WHICH the Grace twins are triplets," a mysterious and menacing shape-shifter shows up at Mallory's fencing match--and before Simon and Jared can suss out what's up, their sister disappears, presumably kidnapped. Eager to recover Mallory, the two descend into a strange subterranean world beneath a nearby quarry, only to find themselves prisoners and then privy to a wicked (and almost unbelievable) plan. The twins do end up tracking down Mallory, but only in very peculiar circumstances--not the least of which that she's wearing a dress.

Author Holly Black once again skillfully manages to weave in plenty of creepy details (including a bloody final chapter) without whitewashing or leaving young readers feeling too creeped out--and she gets able assistance from Tony DeTerlizzi's ever-evocative pen-and-ink drawings (especially in the looming menace of the Mulgarath). Fans of the series will have a hard time waiting for the final installment, titled fittingly, ominously, The Wrath of Mulgarath. (Ages 6 to 10) --Paul Hughes

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6–The Grace children are back for their fourth adventure in the quest to understand and protect Arthur Spiderwick's guide, a book that offers information about the faerie world. Mallory, the oldest, goes missing from a fencing match. The twins, Jared and Simon, must solve a riddle to save her from evil dwarves who want to create a world totally out of metal with their sister as their queen. This installment in the fast-paced series continues with short chapters and well-developed, likable characters. Black-and-white drawings enhance the suspenseful mood. Reluctant readers and fans alike will enjoy this adventure and look forward to the finale.–Krista Tokarz, Cuyahoga County Public Library, OH

The Spiderwick chronicles (The Iron Wood Tree)
By A Customer
This book is about two brothers and there sister. There sister, Mallory gets stollen by elfs of the iron wood tree. She is put into a glass case and that that makes her never age. So her two brothers, Simon and Jared try to save her and they do. They open the case and get her out and they return home with out being harmed. On the way out they get chased by metel dogs (every thing in the iron wood tree place is made of metal.) But they make it home.

I think all poeple would like this book because its about a mystery and you can relate in some ways. You can also imigine what happening in the story too.

Nice development of young characters
By Atheen
This volume is almost a Snow White story, except here the girl's twin brothers are her rescuers and the dwarves are the villians.

I especially enjoyed this book, because being female, I like to see strong female characters presented for young readers. I also like seeing children come to appreciate their sibbling's abilities and value. The book also devels however lightly with the issue of growing up and with not wanting to compete with someone you like.

The plot is very active--not that the others weren't. It carries the reader through the adventure and sets up the tension for the final volume, making it very evident that they are all of a whole fabric.

Again, the book is very nicely bound, the illustrations are very nice, and the price is reasonable enough that it may be easily added to a child's own library.

The End Is Near
By Erika Sorocco
Things have been quiet for the Grace children ever since they tricked a group of nefarious faeries a few weeks ago. But when you're a resident of the Spiderwick Estate, and surrounded by various forms of mythical creatures, things can never stay quiet for long. And they don't. Which is quite evident, when Jared runs into a menacing shape-shifter that has taken on his characteristics, at Mallory's fencing match. But before Simon and Jared can figure out who the shape-shifter truly is, or inform Mallory about the mysterious character, she disappears - kidnapped, apparently. In an attempt to save their sister before something terrible happens to her, Simon and Jared embark on a journey into a local quarry, where they soon end up prisoners of some very strange characters, and find Mallory wearing something very strange...a dress.

With each book in the SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES series that I read, I become a bigger and bigger fan of the Grace children. The marvelous adventures they take part in throughout each installment are enthralling, and keep the reader on the edge of their seat; while the spectacular illustrations serve as eye candy for the detail oriented art-lovers. While each book in the series has featured a mixture of dark and light storylines, THE IRONWOOD TREE features the darkest storyline thus far in the series, yet also includes the most detail of what is going on within the walls of the quarry. Overall, THE IRONWOOD TREE is an enchanting story that cannot be missed by those who have read the previous books in the series, as it sets the pace for the last installment, THE WRATH OF MULGARATH.
