This two-volume set features an array of prominent American luminaries, in no particular order, from the last century, featuring everyone from the actual (Louis Sullivan) to the fictional (Bart Simpson and Superman both make the list), from the world of hip-hop (Grandmaster Flash) and entertainment (Johnny Carson) and beyond. Lesser-known figures, such as Roone Arledge (responsible for prime-time football broadcasts), appear alongside luminaries such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Bill Gates. Essays give each subject a three- to five-page treatment. Included in each essay are the major tenets of each person’s life, his or her cultural significance and/or influence, and a mini bibliographic reference. An additional selected bibliography offers further opportunity to continue more in-depth research, and an index at the back of the book guides readers to each entry, with the main entries conveniently highlighted in bold. Though each chapter is well written and accessible, this collection may have benefited from some sort of grouping by era or arena or field or—at minimum—chronological order; those seeking information about a particular person should prepare to sift through names with neither the benefit of being grouped by time line nor alphabetic order. (Oddly, the time line, in volume 1, continues well after the twentieth century and inexplicably ends with the year 2010.) Although this set could prove useful as a secondary resource for the well-documented figures from the twentieth century, or perhaps serve as a handy resource for the lesser known, the layout and seemingly random assortment of figures makes this an optional purchase. Recommended as a supplemental purchase for high-school and large public libraries. --Joslyn Jones

Mary Cross, PhD, is emerita professor of English at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, NJ, where she was chairman of the English Department. Her published works include Praeger's Bloggerati, Twitterati: How Blogs and Twitter Are Transforming Popular Culture and Greenwood's Madonna: A Biography. She was editor of Greenwood's A Century of American Icons and Praeger's Advertising and Culture: Theoretical Perspectives.

Don't buy or even read this book.

This book is so right wing that it aches. a couple of examples:
The 5 pages on Ronald Reagan by Ms. Cross used the book on Reagan written by Newt Gingrich.
A so called timeline of American events has for the year, 1931:
"President Hoover, calling it "the Great Depression" initiates measures to counteract unemployment rate of 16 percent. Rate rises to 25 percent in 1933." [THANK YOU MR. HOOVER]
"Hoover signs act to make "the Star Spangled Banner . . ." the U.S. official national anthem." [MR. HOOVER, YOUR GREATNESS IS ASSURED]
"World's tallest building . . .Empire State . . . is completed"
And that is it for 1931.
Ms. Cross says that an "editorial board of academics well versed in American history, culture and literature" selected the 100 Greats. I will not put their names down. They would really be embarrassed.
The two tomes under this title really cost a bundle. If you have a lot of bucks to spend foolishly, get it.
