A experiência de ter tido uma infância pobre contribuiu para que Manuel Antônio de Almeida desenvolvesse a sua obra.Destaca-se, ao lado de O filho do pescador de Antônio Gonçalves Teixeira e Sousa e A moreninha, de Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, entre as primeiras produções românticas da literatura brasileira.

While Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias has since been recognized as an important work of Brazilian Literature, it was initially considered a failure. After appearing in weekly installments in the newspaper Correio Mercantil in 1852 and 1853, sales of the two-volume published edition were so insignificant that Almeida apparently abandoned writing. As a literary work, it turns the conventions of the novel of manners on their head -- characters don't neatly fall into the "good" or "bad" categories, but seem to be both likeable and distasteful. And unlike most novels of manners, Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias is concerned with the lower classes.
About the Author
Perhaps the most revolutionary author of his age in Brazil, Manuel António de Almeida (1831-1861) produced one of the most innovative novels in Brazilian Literature, Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias. In his relatively short life (30 years), Almeida became the director of both the Imperial Opera Academy and the National Press, and at the latter became the mentor for the promising young writer, Machado de Assis. But while campaigning for political office, Almeida perished in the shipwreck of the Hermes in November 1861.

Como professora de Literatura, recomendo esse livro a todos que gostem do Romantismo brasileiro. Além disso, é uma importante obra dessa fase e muito solicitado nos melhores vestibulares do país.
