In this ambitious book on southern gospel music, Douglas Harrison reexamines the music's historical emergence and its function as a modern cultural phenomenon. Rather than a single rhetoric focusing on the afterlife as compensation for worldly sacrifice, Harrison presents southern gospel as a network of interconnected messages that evangelical Christians use to make individual sense of both Protestant theological doctrines and their own lived experiences. Harrison explores how listeners and consumers of southern gospel integrate its lyrics and music into their own religious experience, building up individual--and potentially subversive--meanings beneath a surface of evangelical consensus.
Reassessing the contributions of such figures as Aldine Kieffer, James D. Vaughan, and Bill and Gloria Gaither, Then Sings My Soul traces an alternative history of southern gospel in the twentieth century, one that emphasizes the music's interaction with broader shifts in American life beyond the narrow confines of southern gospel's borders. His discussion includes the "gay-gospel paradox"--the experience of non-heterosexuals in gospel music--as a cipher for fundamentalism's conflict with the postmodern world.

Review
"Harrison's work suggests that autobiographical approaches to popular culture have the potential to resonate far beyond a solitary author. It suggests that there might be a whole lot more to the music than has previously been considered."--Register of the Kentucky Historical Society
"A significant contribution to understanding Southern white gospel music and evangelical religious practice. Harrison treats seriously a music that has long been dismissed and neglected as simplistic and is thus vastly understudied."--Jeff Todd Titon, author of Powerhouse for God: Speech, Chant, and Song in an Appalachian Baptist Church
"A compelling and eloquent first book-length critical analysis of the music and social context of modern Southern gospel. Truly one couldn't conjure up a scholar better equipped to write on this topic, which Harrison addresses with notable authority and ambition."--David W. Stowe, author of No Sympathy for the Devil: Christian Pop Music and the Transformation of American Evangelicalism
"Resists facile caricature and simplistic interpretation of a musical tradition which, although it has demonstrated global appeal, remains linked to rural white Southern fundamentalism. . . . Harrison's book complicates our sense of who 'we' are and where that 'beautiful shore' may be. He makes us believe that even within fundamentalist evangelicalism, these borders are not nearly so fixed as we might have supposed."--Religion Dispatches
"A thoughtful and provocative monograph that addresses lacunae in ethnographic research on southern evangelical culture, religion, and music by delineating the important historical roles played by composer/publisher Aldine S. Kieffer (and his partner Ephraim Ruebush), and by songwriter/performer Bill Gaither (and his wife Gloria)."--Journal of Folklore Research
"A powerful and effective sample of self-reflexive scholarship."--Southern Spaces
"Both the most important book about American vernacular music in a generation and a revelatory addition to our rich literature about the lived experience of American evangelicalism. Harrison shows how a fundamentalist evangelical culture can foster individualized moments of wonder-working transcendence that move beneath, around, and through the trappings of power and conformity."--The Journal of Southern History

Book starts out great but then falls a part

Good job of research but then it takes a turn to more of a personal agenda than just the historical facts.

Glory-rolling joy. Sincerity gives wings to strength.
By Parpar
Gifted wordsmith, the author skillfully creates an easy flowing historical narrative of a genre that is an object of his long time passion. His truly contagious love for its old days, present and hopeful future makes the book a captivating read. Pleasantly elaborate and intellectually stimulating use of English language evokes nostalgic memories of times before twitter and modern network news, that seem to be written for, and by, the 5th graders. He is reviving the glorious art of good writing while remaining contemporary and engaging.
It's an academic piece, yet it carefully avoids burdening the reader with dry, boring textbook style, obscure names and nonessential trivia. Author presents history in a curious, exciting manner, making it an easy read and a fascinating combo of a cultural and historical review, political analysis and philosophical meditation.
Harrison takes you on a pleasure journey thru the past into the future in an eternal quest of human soul for the beauty of timeless art. While the shameful history of condoning racism and other evils of fundamentalist religion as well as questionable theology, shady morality and ties with prosperity preachers that mark its present day deservingly darken the image of Southern Gospel, making it's professed faith hardly believable, the magical power of fabulously talented singing in flawless harmony atones for many sins of this rascally ill reputed stepchild of mainstream Christian music while transcending race, historical and cultural boundaries and revealing the music's power to heal a hurting heart in its darkest hour. To quote Pablo Picasso, "Great art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life". And then sings my soul...
I recommend it as a great book for those who love Christian music of any genre, culture or creed, and enjoy an insightful, though provoking, politically incorrect, concise and un-watered down talk about its evolution and transformational force. Read and enjoy it slowly; you bound to miss something if you do it in haste.

Insightful and Entertaining
By J.C. Robertson
Like, Dr. Harrison, I grew up immersed in southern gospel music, but unlike Harrison, I didn't stop to think about the music's broader influence in American culture. In Then Sings My Soul, Harrison does exactly that.
This thought-provoking book tackles the deeper meaning that lies beneath the lyrics and the way the music shapes the narrative of our lives.
As a scholar, Harrison dives deep into the music's past, it's present and it's future. As a man who grew up with this music, he approaches it with a personal nostalgia that makes for a delightfully entertaining read.
Tales of his own upbringing in a country church and the women who influenced his love of southern gospel (I suspect he could write a whole book on Maude and Maxine) give this scholarly work a beautiful human component. If only more scholars would to bring their insight to light with such an entertaining flair!
