About the Author
John Leonard is currently a principal scientist at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, where he is primarily involved with synthetic route design and development activities. Prior to this he was a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Salford, UK.
Garry Procter is a professor and director of teaching in the School of Chemistry at the University of Manchester, UK. Before this he was director of undergraduate laboratories in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University.
Barry Lygo is currently a professor of chemistry at the University of Nottingham, UK, working in the field of asymmetric catalysis and synthesis.

Organic Chemists and Students Must Have!

The book discusses fundamental techniques in organic laboratory. Topics that I found very useful are running the reaction (i.e. air-sensitive and water-sensitive chemistry), monitoring reaction (i.e.thin-layer chromatography), working up reaction (have you wondered why ammonium chloride is a good reagent to work up the reaction? how to efficiently separate layers without emulsions?, etc), purifying compounds (i.e. distillation, recrystallization, determining the sizes of columns, choice of eluting solvents,...) The book should be on the shelf of every chemist.

Great book. Easily readable. Very practical.

This is a great book. As a graduate student studying medicinal chemistry, I have run into many situations in the lab that undergrad just did not prepare me for. This book is really helping to bring me up to speed with my techniques. It seems as though most chemistry books are somewhat theoretical and abstract in nature, but "Advanced Practical Organic Chemistry" provides the reader with easy to read (based on the assumption of at least a basic background in organic chemistry) tutorial and reference for many day-to-day procedures that are encountered in the lab. It was easy enough to read cover to cover in just a couple days, but is also so full of info. that I continue to look back and reference it almost daily. While there are several well-drawn illustrations, if I could want anything more out of this book, it would perhaps be a few more illustrations to go along with the assembly of some of the apparatuses.

As a physical chemist/spectroscopist by training who suddenly found myself needing to synthesize & characterize some model compounds for my experiments, I found this book to be a very helpful review of modern synthetic techniques, particularly in regards to purifying starting materials, dealing with air-sensitive compounds, and monitoring the reaction's progress. Definitely a recommended reference for any chemist. It's companion, "Advanced Practical Inorganic and Metalorganic Chemistry", is also highly recommended, though if I had to choose between the two I'd say that "Advanced Practical Organic Chemistry" is most useful.
