Review

"This is an authoritative and thorough overview of a field of growing significance to neuroscience. Metal ion metabolism is intimately involved with the causes of most neurodegenerative disease, and is an area of unexploited importance for potential drug development. This work is timely, and tremendously useful with an excellent choice of subjects, beautifully and rigorously presented"

Traveling Between Worlds: German-American EncountersFrom Texas A&M University Press

In Traveling between Worlds, six authors explore the connectedness between Germans and Americans in the nineteenth century and their mutual impact on transatlantic history. Despite the ocean between them, these two groups of people were linked not only by the emigration from one to the other but also by ongoing interactions, especially among their intellectuals.

Christof Mauch’s introduction examines the history of the German-American exchange and of cultural exchanges in general. Focusing on various aspects of the German-American relationship, Eberhard Bruning, John T. Walker, Thomas Adam, Gabriele Lingelbach, Andrew P. Yox, and Christiane Harzig examine the cultural and communicative exchanges that occurred both between the two countries and within them. Topics such as travel, cultural interpretation, ideological and intellectual transfer, the immigrant experience, and German-American poetry are all considered.

Traveling between Worlds demonstrates that exchange was facilitated and maintained by ordinary individuals such as teachers and scholars, immigrants and natives, and held implications that last to this day.

Israel Has Moved, by Diana Pinto

Born in Europe’s shadow, haunted by the Holocaust, and inspired by the Enlightenment, Israel has changed. Where is this diverse and self-absorbed country heading today? How do its citizens see themselves, globally and historically? Israel Has Moved is a profound and sometimes unsettling account of a country that is no longer where we might think.

Review
Pinto's strength as a writer is her penetrating understanding of what lies beneath the surface of the clichés...Pinto describes a recognizable Israeli mindset which owes nothing to the discourse of post-colonial narratives but rather a unique viewpoint, developed out of centuries of statelessness...Pinto has written about the country rather than being drawn, as so many intellectuals are, to the seamline, the conflict. Knowing that the occupation is wrong, that Zionism was a category error, absolves them of the duty of giving Israel and Israelis any real thought. In China and India the opposite is the case; they're fascinated by how the place works, what exactly is the secret of its ability to live outside geography. Pinto is the writer to turn to, though her own head is as bashed against the wall of futility as everybody else's. (Linda Grant The Independent 2013-03-02)

[Pinto] presents impressions and interviews that reveal both Israeli truculence to go its own road as well as deep schisms within Israeli society. The author's vivid characterizations of Israeli society expose its deeply problematic nature: as 'autistic,' in that its brilliant young people and leaders operate within a self-contained obliviousness of others; as a 'realm of collective psychosis' in thinking, as ultranationalist religious Zionists do, that the Temple in Jerusalem could ever be rebuilt, since it would obliterate the Dome of the Rock, a holy site for Muslims; as a postmodern Utopia in its scientific and genetic advances; as a 'very large and ultrasophisticated aquarium' containing exotic fishes, all 'turning rapidly away to avoid the others, and all of this in utter silence.' From the choosing of which road to take into Jerusalem (through heroic landmarks or the less-traveled Route 443 leading to various Arab exits) to the country's spectacular embrace of high technology and Asian investment, which offer a glaring juxtaposition to the pre-modern lifestyles of the ultraorthodox, everywhere Israel is awash in contradictions. But does Israel really care who thinks so? Fewer and fewer sophisticated Israelis bother to envision a two-state solution, and Pinto fears that this solipsism is engendering a dangerous "self-satisfaction bordering on hubris"--and it can't last...A solid work of intellectual criticism. (Kirkus Reviews 2012-12-01)

In every chapter vivid colors depict in exquisite detail some delimited aspect of life. Diana Pinto has an eye for the telling detail that helps us feel the complexity, the nuance, the texture, and the flow of social, economic, cultural, and political life in Israel today. (Tony Smith, Tufts University)

Diana Pinto's book is brilliant. She draws a portrait of Israel as a living entity, warts and all, caught between the euphoric power of its creativity, and the weaknesses of its historical contradictions and political impasses. Studded with multi-layered illuminating anecdotes and metaphors, the book could easily pass as a fascinating travel journal. But rigorous intellectual categories lurk behind the highly readable style. (Saul Friedlander, University of California, Los Angeles)

A terrific book, so well written that it is hard to put down while offering deep and analytical insights that must be taken seriously by anyone concerned with contemporary Israel. (Susan Neiman, Director, Einstein Forum)

Brilliant and beautifully written. Even those who disagree with Pinto's analysis cannot deny its force and her deep love and concern for Israel. An equally anguished and powerful rebuttal can be expected from Jerusalem. (Shlomo Avineri, author of The Making of Modern Zionism)

This book takes Israel's built environment as a departure point to offer broader reflections on shifts in the nation's psyche, sometimes to brilliant and startling effect. Diana Pinto delineates the physical landscape of present-day Israel--its highways, restaurants and shopping malls--using it to describe the country as it is, not as the rest of the world would like it to be...Pinto's acute--and, in my view, apt--diagnosis of Israel's defining ailment is that it is 'autistic': trapped inside its own increasingly comfortable, security-defended bubble, unable to connect with--much less identify with--its neighbors, starting with the Palestinians...Overall, the effect is of enjoying an engaging and trenchant dinner party conversation with an intelligent traveller brimming with impressions from a trip. (John Reed Financial Times 2013-03-24)

It’s rare for any book nowadays to cast totally new light on the Israel-Palestine conflict, but Diana Pinto’s Israel Has Moved does just that. She argues that the political, military and financial elite of Israel are turning away from Europe and even from America, which they regard as mired in economic difficulties and riven by ideological contradictions, and are looking to align themselves with those regimes in the Far East, China in particular, which have, like them, scant regard for human rights and a fierce determination to succeed economically and politically. Written out of a profound reverence for Enlightenment values, this desperately sad yet elegant and witty book asks us to contemplate the possibility that the Enlightenment, far from gradually conquering the globe, may, after 250 years, be slowly dying before our eyes. (Gabriel Josipovici Times Literary Supplement 2013-11-29)

Exquisite narration of the present Israeli gestalt, informed by the past 20 years and 20 centuries.
By J. D. Frost
Beautifully written and accurate to the finest nuance. I've been traveling to Israel annually for more than thirty years - this author has encapsulated and elucidated modern Israeli culture(s) world views and gestalt in a page turner that is also an intellectual travel diary. Comparable to Amos Oz's Here and There in the Land of Israel, for the new century.

provocative but no data or context
By Paul Burstein
Pinto's book begins provocatively. She claims that "Israel has abandoned its Arab neighborhood," and, what's more, is "in the process of forfeiting its more than 2,000-year-old anchoring...within the grand Western symbiosis of Athens, Rome, and Jerusalem....Israel today thinks of itself as living in its own cyberspace...inside its own utopia," while "its postmodern future is being built on scientific innovation, and yet the country seems to be rooting itself in an increasingly ancient, even archaic, past whose tenets are ever more religiously and ethnically exclusive" (p. 1). And it concludes provocatively as well. Israelis no longer think much about a two-state solution because it seems unattainable. Instead, "Today's Israel, dashing toward the future with an incredible creative energy but also with a self-satisfaction bordering on hubris will not be able to endure in its current setting" (p. 190).

Though well-written and full of interesting observations, Israel Has Moved basically repeats two conventional tropes. First is the idea of the "bubble," claiming that Israelis, especially the well-off in and around Tel Aviv, are living in a fantasy world, oblivious to the harm they are causing others and the danger they are in. Second is the claim that Israelis don't think very much about the two-state solution, a view encapsulated in the headline of Ethan Bronner's New York Times article of May 25, "What Mideast Crisis? Israelis Have Moved On."

I'll mention three problems with the book. First, Pinto very confidentally makes bold claims about Israel (as in "Israel has abandoned its Arab neighborhood") and Israelis without any evidence to back them up, beyond her own impressions, gathered who knows how? Of course some of the claims are figurative (Pinto knows Israel hasn't moved physically) but they still represent very bold claims about Israelis' state of mind based on--what? Second, though it is surely true that many Israelis ignore the danger they're in on a day-to-day basis, it's difficult to claim that this is a general phenomenon, given the constant coverage of Israel's problems, domestic and foreign, in the media, literature, the arts, publications by think tanks, etc., etc. Third, Pinto is guilty of what she accuses Israelis of--ignoring the outside world. If one had visited the U.S. during much of the Cold War, when there was a real threat of nuclear annhilation, when the Civil Rights movement was at its peak, when the U.S. was staying in Vietnam despite protests against its being there, what would one have found most people--not all, by any means--thinking about on a daily basis? Earning a living, family relationships, shopping, and so on. That didn't mean people didn't care about the threat of nuclear war, or civil rights, or Vietnam--it just meant that people don't spend their time worrying about big issues they can't do anything about. It would have helped a lot had Pinto treated Israelis like regular people, responding to big national and international conflicts and dangers much the way others do. Or if Israelis are uniquely oblivious to their circumstances, it would have been helpful to provide some evidence that this is so. Pinto has provided some thought-provoking rhetoric, but no one should mistake this for a book from which one can learn much about Israel.

New Approach
By elliott ashkenazi
Unusual approach to a subject that has received much attention. Her conclusions are difficult to ignore. The drift of Israel away from founding principles is inescapable, but there is no one to talk to on other side of the table.

Operation Matador, by Chit Chung Ong

When Singapore fell to the Japanese in February 1942, Churchill called it the “largest capitulation in British history.” Till today, the myth persists that this was due to the British forces’ being caught off-guard, with their guns facing the wrong direction—towards the sea. This book offers an alternative insight into why Malaya and Singapore were captured by the Japanese.

The question of the landward defence of Singapore and Malaya was first raised as early as 1918, eventually taking the form of Operation Matador, the elaborate planning and preparations for which amply demonstrate that the British fully expected the Japanese to attack Singapore from the rear, and had formulated a plan to stop the Japanese at the Kra Isthmus. Yet, when the Japanese forces landed, they found Malaya and Singapore defended by an emasculated fleet, obsolescent aircraft, inadequate artillery and no tanks. The battle for Malaya and Singapore was lost even before the first shot was fired—in the corridors of power at Whitehall. Churchill’s half-hearted support for Operation Matador meant that Malaya was starved of the necessary reinforcements, and the commanders on the spot were expected to “make bricks without straw.” The question that remains: If implemented, might Operation Matador have stopped the Japanese?

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this humorous and captivating Regency take on the Cinderella story, carriage worker's daughter Isabella Smith sneaks into the Kingsborough masquerade ball, hoping to have some fun before becoming engaged to the dull and demanding Timothy Roberts. Isabella, wearing a mask and the beautiful gown that she's kept hidden in her attic, captures the attention of Anthony, Duke of Kingsborough, and sparks immediately fly. When Isabella hastily exits, Anthony is devastated but knows he must locate her—especially when friends assert that she was wearing the dress in which their kidnapped daughter was last seen. Isabella realizes that her mother, who hates the aristocracy, will never approve of her flirtation with Anthony, yet as her dislike for Mr. Roberts grows, so does her affection for the duke. Before finding love, the two must confront society's rules, family secrets, and vengeful debutantes. Regency fans will happily devour this tale's heady passion, comical interludes, and engaging story. (Sept.)

From Booklist
All Isabella Chilcott wants is one dance at a ball before doing her duty and marrying the eminently respectable (and mind-numbingly predictable) Timothy Roberts. So when presented with the chance to attend the Kingsborough ball, the first to be held in five years, Isabella isn’t about to let the opportunity pass her by. Dressed in an exquisite gown she finds in the attic (Wherever did her mother get this creation?) Isabella is having the time of her life masquerading as “Miss Smith” until Anthony Hurst, the Duke of Kingsborough, asks her to dance. One waltz with Anthony soon leads to another, and before she knows what is happening, Isabella is kissing him. While Isabella may be resigned to the idea that the two of them have no romantic future, Anthony is equally determined to make the mystery woman he is kissing his forever. Barnes, who got her literary start with Avon’s e-publishing imprint, Impulse, makes her print debut with a flawless, fairy tale–like romance that will enchant readers with its perfect blend of sharp wit and sizzling sensuality. --John Charles

Pleasant 1st in series
By ConstantReader
I actually would give this book 3 1/2 stars because I enjoyed it and it kept me reading. Isabella Chilcott is the daughter of a carriage driver. To achieve a lifelong ambition, she crashes the masquerade ball of the local duke in order to live her dream before settling down with the pompous ass her parents promised her to. The obvious happens: the duke falls in love with the mysterious lady, the feeling is mutual, she disappears at the midnight unmasking, and the duke has to run around the area looking for his lost love a la Cinderella. He finds her fairly quickly, but he then has to contend with her belief that she has to marry the ass her parents chose, as well as her mother's dislike of aristocrats. This takes up the majority of the book. That's quite a weakness, since these issues don't make much sense. The idea that a girl will refuse the duke she loves in favor of someone she's not really committed to and doesn't have much of a relationship with is hardly believable. Likewise the idea that any rational parent would prefer an arranged match with a carriage maker instead of a besotted duke begging for her hand is ludicrous. The reason for the parent's prejudice is obvious from the beginning, but it takes the book a while to get there. Nevetheless, Isabella and her love Anthony are a romantic couple and the story was pleasant, if not original. There is also a thread left hanging in the plot, involving secondary characters that will be folllowed up in the next book. I'm going to look for it, because I think this author is promising and I enjoy the way she draws her characters.

A Shockingly Bad Book
By J. Weaver
This book is not shocking. Nothing that happens (and I do mean nothing) is unexpected or unpredictable or tawdry or sinister. What's shocking about it is that an actual book publisher decided to print it. I mean, I was almost embarrassed to read it because of how predictable and juvenile it is.

The plot revolves around Isabella Chilcott, a naive young woman who sneaks into the Duke of Kingsborough's ball wearing a gown that her mother had hidden in the attic. She and her sister have known about the dress for years but have never asked their mother about it because they didn't want to get in trouble for playing in the attic. The author takes quite a heavy-handed approach at spinning her version of Cinderella. But there really isn't any magic to this story, just a series of obvious events with a lusty duke and an annoyingly submissive young girl who is planning to marry a man her parents have chosen for her (and whom she finds condescending, boring, and domineering), despite the Duke's proclamation (the night of their first meeting) that he thinks he might fall in love with her and would like to court her.

The dialogue (heck the entire plotting) of the novel is unrealistic and juvenile. I've never understood reviewers who've said they wanted to just throw a book at the wall, but this book finally made me empathize with them. From the stilted dialogue to the unlikeable characters and obvious plotting, there isn't a single thing about this book I could recommend.

Too smutty (and too cliche) for my tastes, however, there is an actual bit of plot in there.
By L. Perry
Not a fan. But I'll be the first to admit that in my book-obsession, I occasionally snatch up things that are a poor fit for my reading tastes. This was one of those moments.

I did finish it, for the purpose of reviewing it, but that was really my only reason for completing this book. I personally prefer a less smutty read. However, I must also acknowledge that (happily) this book is not cover-to-cover raunchiness. It's got it's moments of that, though. You'll make your own call as to whether that's too much or not enough. It's somewhere between PG-13 and R, but it's not an X.

There was a bit of plot, there was a bit of character, there was some writing talent on display.

But, really, I prefer heroines at least a little less helpless.

Read something else, I think.

Your Worst Nightmare (You're invited to a Creepover Book 17), by P.J. Night

In one of the scariest Creepovers yet, a class trip to the caves leads to underground horror.

The seventh graders at Jefferson Middle School are superexcited to be going on their first-ever, overnight class trip to the famous Ravensburg Caverns. But what they don’t know is that there are local rumors about the Ravensburg Caverns. Rumors that a group of kids one hundred years ago got trapped in the caves and never came out. Legend has it that if you listen closely, you can still hear the echoes of their cries. And unfortunately for best friends Kristi Chen and Olivia Pappas and a few of their friends, their fun trip away from home will take a turn for the worse when they stumble into the same trap—only to discover that their worst nightmares have come alive…

This frightening fable is rated a Level 5 on the Creep-o-Meter.

Your Worst Nightmare

CHAPTER 1
“You don’t have to wait, Mom,” Kristi Chen said firmly. “I’ll be fine. Just drop me off like it’s a regular school day.”

Mrs. Chen pursed her lips. “Are you sure, honey?” she asked. “It looks like the other parents are staying until the buses leave.”

“But don’t you have an important meeting?” Kristi replied. She actually couldn’t remember if her mom had a meeting or not, but it was safe to assume that she did.

“Yes,” Mrs. Chen admitted with a sigh. She glanced at her watch before she could stop herself. As one of the busiest lawyers in the state, Mrs. Chen was always rushing off to a big meeting or a court date.

“So go!” Kristi exclaimed. “Seriously, why waste your time standing around breathing in bus fumes?”

“Okay,” Mrs. Chen finally gave in. She wrapped her arms around Kristi for a big hug. “Be careful, Kristi. Don’t go off by yourself; listen to your teachers; stay safe. I’ll be out of town starting tomorrow for a deposition so I won’t see you until Wednesday, but I told Tanya to pick you up at eight o’clock tomorrow night. Just call her if the buses are running late.”

“Okay, Mom! Love you! Bye!” Kristi cried. She grabbed her overnight bag and backpack and bolted from the car before her mom could change her mind.

The rest of the seventh graders at Jefferson Middle School milled around the two buses that were idling by the curb. Kristi had never seen her classmates so excited to be at school on a Monday morning. She adjusted her backpack as she moved toward the crowd, looking for her best friend, Olivia Papas. But, as usual, Olivia found Kristi first.

“Kristi!” Olivia shrieked. “Are you psyched? I’m so psyched! I can’t believe we’re finally going on the field trip!”

“I know!” Kristi replied with a grin. Then she heard a familiar voice call out.

“Olivia! Kristi!”

Olivia’s smile immediately disappeared. She grabbed Kristi’s arm and dragged her around to the other side of the bus. “Oh no. It’s my parents . . .”

“Pretty bad this morning?” Kristi asked sympathetically.

“The worst ever.” Olivia groaned. “They brought the video camera and they’re interviewing kids about the trip. I’m gonna die of embarrassment.”

Kristi couldn’t help laughing. “I’m sorry,” she said. “That’s rough. But look on the bright side—at least they’re not chaperoning.”

“Shhh!” Olivia said, her eyes wide. “Don’t jinx it. Besides, I won’t believe that until the buses are moving and I know they’re not on them! How’d you get rid of your mom?”

Kristi shrugged. “She had a meeting. The usual.”

“Lucky,” Olivia replied. “I wish my parents had a life . . . outside of ruining mine.”

Just then the girls heard a loud whistle. “Attention, seventh graders,” Mr. Tanaka, their social studies teacher, called above all the noise. “Please join me by the flagpole.”

Everyone hurried over toward Mr. Tanaka. Ms. Pierce, the science teacher, stood next to him.

“At last, it’s the day we’ve all been waiting for,” Mr. Tanaka announced. “The annual seventh grade overnight field trip to Ravensburg Caverns is finally here!”

All the kids started cheering. Mr. Tanaka smiled indulgently for a moment before he raised his hands to quiet them.

“If you haven’t already done so, please leave your luggage by the side of the bus so Mr. Carlson and Mr. Reed can load it. Remember, you can keep your backpack with you, but no eating or drinking on the buses,” Mr. Tanaka continued.

“I’d like to remind everyone that even though we’ll be away from school for two days, the regular school rules are still in effect,” Ms. Pierce added. “If you break those rules, you will be sent home immediately.”

Mr. Tanaka eyed the kids sternly for a moment, then he smiled. “Okay! If you’re on bus one, please follow me. If you’re on bus two, go with Ms. Pierce. And let’s get this show on the road!”

“Hurry,” Kristi said to Olivia. “I want to get a good seat. In the back.”

The girls pushed their way through the crowd to bus one—but Mr. and Mrs. Papas stepped in front of them.

“One more hug!” Mrs. Papas cried as she reached for Olivia.

Olivia rolled her eyes as her parents squashed her in a giant bear hug, but only Kristi could see.

“We’re going to miss you so much, Poodle,” Mr. Papas said.

“Dad. You promised you would stop calling me that,” Olivia said through gritted teeth. She glanced around to see if anyone besides Kristi had heard him. The nickname had been stuck to Olivia since second grade, when she used to wear her curly dark hair in two enormous, fluffy pigtails. Everyone at school already knew about it.

“Sorry,” Mr. Papas apologized as he gave Olivia’s hair a little tug. He turned to Kristi. “Take good care of each other, okay, Kristi?”

“Absolutely, Mr. Papas. You can count on me,” Kristi said, trying not to laugh. “But we’d better go.”

“I’m so bad at good-byes,” Mrs. Papas said, wiping her eyes. “I love you, sweetie. Please be careful in the caves. I’m going to be so worried about you.”

“Come on, Mom, I’ll be back tomorrow night. You won’t even notice I’m gone,” Olivia replied. “Bye!” Then she hurried off to the bus, dragging Kristi behind her.

On the bus, Kristi spotted an empty row of seats that was almost at the back. Best of all, it was right in front of Julia Morales and Destiny Ryan, the most popular girls in seventh grade. Maybe she and Olivia could lean over the back of the seat and talk to them for the whole ride.

“Kristi, Kristi, wait,” Olivia said, pulling Kristi over to a row on the opposite side of the bus—and right near the front. “Let’s sit here.”

“Here? In the front? Why?”

“Because my parents are taking pictures on the other side,” Olivia explained. “They won’t be able to see us if we sit over here. Please, Kristi? Please?”

Kristi sighed as she followed Olivia into the other row. Now they would be sitting just two rows behind Mr. Tanaka. It seemed pretty dumb to Kristi to pick a seat for the entire bus ride just because Olivia’s parents wanted to take a couple of pictures of the bus leaving. But she knew how sensitive Olivia was about her parents, and how smothering they could be.

Olivia dug around in her backpack and pulled out her bright pink hairbrush. “Want me to do your hair?” she asked.

“Yes, please,” Kristi replied. She twisted around in the seat so that her back was facing Olivia. Kristi closed her eyes as Olivia started brushing her long hair.

An obnoxiously loud voice rang through the bus. “Hey, look at that! Usually the poodle is the one being groomed!”

Kristi didn’t need to open her eyes to know who was talking. She’d know that voice anywhere. “Hi, Bobby,” she said.

“Actually, what she meant to say was, ‘Shut up, Bobby,’ ” Olivia said.

But Bobby Lehman had never shut up in his life, and he wasn’t about to start now. He threw his backpack into the seat in front of Kristi and Olivia. “Ooh, Olivia, will you do my hair next? Puh-leeease?” Bobby cooed in a high-pitched, squeaky voice.

Olivia shot Bobby a dirty look as she put down her hairbrush and started playing around with her phone. Almost immediately, Kristi’s phone buzzed with a text from Olivia.

K, u were so right about the seats. I wish we weren’t stuck behind Bobby. UGH!

Kristi gave Olivia a little smile, but she didn’t text her back. She knew Bobby could be really annoying. He was the youngest of four brothers and he always tried so hard to make everyone laugh. He was so desperate to be the center of attention all the time that it often backfired, and Kristi felt a little sorry for him. He didn’t seem to have a lot of friends; even now, he was the only kid on the packed bus who was sitting all by himself. And Kristi never would have admitted it—not even to Olivia—but she actually thought Bobby was cute. Kinda. Sorta. And sometimes he was actually really funny. And when he wasn’t trying to show off, Kristi thought he could be really nice, too.

“So are you guys looking forward to exploring the caves tomorrow?” Bobby continued as the bus pulled out of the school parking lot.

Olivia put on some headphones and started listening to music from her phone. There was no way that Bobby could’ve missed the hint, but he ignored it completely.

“I’m not,” Bobby answered his own question. “Those caves are scary. Not fun scary, really scary.”

“What do you mean?” Kristi asked curiously.

“My brothers told me all about it,” Bobby said loudly. “They said it should be criminal to take kids into the Ravensburg Caverns. After what happened there.”

Kristi raised her eyebrows. She was pretty sure that Bobby was about to tell one of his over-the-top stories. But even so, she couldn’t help asking, “What? What happened?”

“It was a long time ago,” Bobby began as kids in other seats stopped chatting and started listening in. “Almost a hundred years ago, actually. Well, the caves were a really big deal even back then. Like, every day people lined up for a chance to go inside and see the wonders of the Ravensburg Caverns. And schools—just like our school—sent kids there on field trips.”

“So?” yelled Evan Hollis from a few rows behind Kristi.

“So . . . ,” Bobby said, pausing dramatically, “so . . . one time a class disappeared in the caves. Twenty-one kids. Vanished. Gone without a trace.”

Now it seemed like just about everyone on the bus was focused on Bobby. Even Mr. Tanaka had shifted in his seat, like he was listening with one ear.

“The townspeople searched for months,” Bobby said, leaning over the seat back. He had everyone’s attention now and he was determined to keep it. “Even after they had lost all hope that the kids would be found alive, they kept looking. They brought in search-and-rescue dogs and they searched, and they searched . . . and they found nothing. Not a footprint. Not a fingerprint. Not a sweater. Not a hair bow. Not a body. Not even a bone. Twenty-one kids vanished off the face of the earth, as if they had never . . . even . . . existed.”

“But what . . .” Kristi swallowed; her mouth was suddenly very dry. She tried again. “But what happened to them?”

Bobby shrugged. “Nobody knows. Most people think that they must have fallen into, like, an abyss or something. Some of those drops in the cave . . . Even now, they don’t know quite how far they go down. But I don’t think so.”

“How come?” asked Olivia. Kristi wondered when Olivia had taken off her headphones.

“Come on,” Bobby said confidently. “How would twenty-one kids all fall down the same hole? I mean, sure, two or three. Maybe even five. But wouldn’t the ones at the back be able to save themselves? They weren’t, like, babies. They were our age. So whatever happened to those kids was worse. Way worse. And my brother says . . .”

“What?” Kristi and Olivia exclaimed at the same time.

“My brother says that if you listen really carefully in the caves, you can still hear the echoes of their cries for help. Please . . . please . . . please . . . help . . . help . . . help . . . meeeee . . . meeeee . . . meeeee . . . ,” Bobby said, raising his voice to a shrill whisper as he imitated the echoes.

The sound of Bobby’s echoes made chills run down Kristi’s neck. But apparently she was the only one who responded that way: Everyone else on the bus burst into laughter. It was definitely not the response Bobby was hoping for. His whole face darkened.

“Okay, okay, save it for Halloween, Mr. Lehman,” Mr. Tanaka said sternly. “An excellent tall tale . . . but not a true one. You’ll all learn about the real history of the Ravensburg Caverns on our tour tomorrow.”

“It is true,” Bobby said stubbornly. “I know a lot more about the caverns than you do.”

“Watch it, young man,” Mr. Tanaka said, and there was no mistaking the warning in his voice. “And face forward, please. No turning around in your seat while the bus is moving—you know better.”

Bobby slumped down in his seat. Kristi couldn’t see him any longer, but she could imagine the frustrated look on his face. Just then her phone buzzed with another text:

Lame story, right?

Kristy half-smiled, half-shrugged at Olivia. “Hey, I downloaded some new songs last night,” she said, changing the subject abruptly. “Want to listen?”

“Definitely!” Olivia exclaimed, plugging her headphones into Kristi’s phone. Kristy cued up the first song and stared out the window while Olivia listened to it.

She couldn’t stop thinking about the story that Bobby had told. The thought of being lost in the caves . . . lost forever . . . made her wish that she was in second-period Spanish class instead of heading straight for the Ravensburg Caverns. Because you could use a lot of words to describe Bobby—he was definitely a loudmouth, a bragger, an attention hog—but Kristi knew one thing: Bobby Lehman was no liar.

In most people's minds, "eating disorder" (ED) conjures images of a thin, white, upper-middle-class teenage girl. The ED landscape has changed. Countless men and women in midlife and beyond, from all ethnic backgrounds, also struggle with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, purging disorder, and binge eating disorder. Some people have suffered since youth; others relapsed in midlife, often after a stressor such as infidelity, divorce, death of a loved one, menopause, or unemployment. Still others experience eating disorder symptoms for the first time in midlife.

Primary care physicians, ob-gyns, and other practitioners may overlook these disorders in adults or, even worse, demean them for not having outgrown these adolescent problems. Treatments for adults must acknowledge and address the unique challenges faced by those middle-aged or older. Midlife Eating Disorders-a landmark book-guides adults in understanding "Why me?" and "Why now?" It shows a connection between the rise in midlife ED and certain industries that foster discontent with the natural aging process. It also gives readers renewed hope by explaining how to overcome symptoms and access resources and support. Renowned eating disorder specialist Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D., helps partners and family members develop compassion for those who suffer with ED-and helps health professionals appreciate the nuances associated with detecting and treating midlife eating disorders.

From Booklist
First, the bad news. The prevalence of some adult eating disorders is increasing, and these disorders can be deadly. But the good news, according to Bulik, a clinical psychologist and director of the University of North Carolina Eating Disorders Program, is that remission and even recovery from eating disorders is possible at any age. She reviews the causes, features, and age-appropriate treatments of midlife eating disorders from anorexia nervosa to binge eating, bulimia nervosa, and purging. She explores some of the challenges facing adults with eating problems, including parenting, intimacy, pregnancy, and breast-feeding. Low self-esteem often accompanies this set of illnesses, and personal relationships are impacted. Psychotherapy and medication are treatment options. Bulik lays lots of blame on such billion-dollar industries as Big Food, Big Beverage, Big Diet, Big Fashion, and Big Pharma for creating a culture where people feel bad about themselves no matter their age. Her sensitive and steady approach to eating disorders comes with prudent advice: be patient and compassionate; eat regularly and in moderation; practice honesty; seek support. --Tony Miksanek

A light and a lifeline for midlife eating disorders
By Deb
Based on how much I loved Cynthia's previous books of Crave: Why You Binge Eat and How to Stop and The Woman in the Mirror: How to Stop Confusing What You Look Like with Who You Are, it wasn't too much of a surprise that I ate up her most recent treat of a book! As was the case with her other books, Cynthia delivers a wealth of information in such a well-organized and engaging way: it feels like she's sitting right there talking to you!

With its focus on midlife eating disorders, this book stands out among the others on the shelf that tend to be focused more on teenagers and young adults. (This is not your teenage daughter's eating disorder recovery book!) After painting the unique picture of the face of the eating disorders of anorexia, bulimia, purging disorder, and binge eating disorder (BED) in midlife, Cynthia looks at the challenges specific to this age group. She even devotes much-needed attention to the presentation and treatment of eating disorders in men. The final section of the book provides valuable guidance for staying on the path of midlife eating disorder recovery.

The delicious servings of information, wisdom, and encouragement throughout this book certainly meet the nutritional requirements for learning about the causes, context, and treatment of midlife eating disorders. Each chapter is a satisfying meal in and of itself. At the end of the book, Cynthia serves up a delicious dessert in the form of the essential ingredients for recovery that she has gleamed during her thirty years of treating eating disorders...They're too good not to share some bites here, but you'll have to get your hands on the book to savor them in their entirety (pp. 286-289):

* Be patient and compassionate with yourself.
Treatment will not succeed if you are impatient. Eating disorders develop over time, and they go away over time. There is no perfect recovery.

* Eat.
Whether you have anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, purging disorder, BED, or some variation on the theme, eating is your friend and critical to recovery...Not eating gets people with every conceivable eating disorder in trouble.

* Expect bumps along the road.
Recovery is not linear. If you expect it to be linear, you will be disappointed... Obstacles surely get thrown your way, but you get better at learning how to deal with them--because you learn from every obstacle and can respond in a more effective way the next time you encounter it.

* Find something about yourself you can love.
Patients who have done well have been able to lift their self-loathing sheath, if only a little, to recognize and come to love some aspect about themselves that they can view as positive. This is often the first foothold into developing the self-permission for recovery.

* Be persistent.
Don't give up. If a round of treatment fails, do not become defeatist. Try something else, or try another round of the same thing. Eventually, after enough turning and tapping, the lid is going to come off the jar, and you'll be free to progress in recovery.

* Practice radical honesty.
Radical honesty can feel like jumping off the high dive blindfolded, but giving up all of the eating disorder secrets is an essential piece of recovery.

* Rely on your support team.
Recovery is difficult in a vacuum. Define your support team, whether it includes your therapist, physician, partner, parents, friends, or siblings...Eating disorders prey on loneliness.

* Pat yourself on the back, and accept it when others pat you on the back.
Don't let treatment success fly by without acknowledgement. Recovery is hard work, and if you don't allow yourself to feel a sense of accomplishment when you make progress, it will not be a reinforcing experience.

* Don't sit back and expect recovery to come knocking.
No one ever said that recovery was easy. Recovery is not for the meek. You need to go out and seek recovery and put muscle into achieving it.

* Don't hold on to a nugget.
This is related to practicing radical honesty, but it refers to holding on to one last vestige of the eating disorder--not wanting to add that last "feared food" to your diet, allowing yourself one purge per week, skipping breakfast on Sunday...You have to let it all go and find healthier alternatives that allow you achieve the same endpoint--be it security, control, calm or whatever that nugget provides you with--in order to close the door on the eating disorder and move on to the next phase of your life.

Cynthia's groundbreaking book provides both a light and a lifeline for helping individuals and their loved ones navigate the path of midlife eating disorders.

Breaks The Mid-Life Stigma!
By Brian Cuban
As someone who was bulimic well into his 40's I found Dr. Bulik's book an excellent resource in helping me gain a better perspective in dealing with my disorder so late in life. Her book helps dispel the stereotype that young females are the only ones who suffer from eating disorders. As I moved into my 40's, bulimic and suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder, the pressure to looks a certain way was as great as it was when I first became bulimic in my early 20's. Even more, the shame in the act of binging and purging was just a great but with greater perceived consequences of being discovered. It is so important for treatment providers to recognize this and ask the right questions because often times the shame is too great to volunteer the information, especially when we are settled in our lives, with families, careers, etc. Dr. Bulik's book provides an excellent framework for this. I highly recommend it.

OK for research material, wouldn't recommend it for someone suffering with a disorder
By jazzsinger
I choose this book based on reviews as I needed a good tool for references for an article. I found it to be a bit dated, giving stats that are considered common knowledge with eating disorders and it really didn't address the specific concerns relating to women over 40 with the condition. The book is really not, according to me a tool for recovery, but it is a decent reference book for a paper or editorial.
