Review

"This two-volume set is the first in the publisher's new series, ‘Handbooks in Economics,’ devoted to publication of authoritative references focused on particular branches of economics, in this case, CGE modeling, which is a tool used ubiquitously for policy analysis and development. The series' handbooks are intended to be self-contained, offering background and a survey of prevailing and competing views as well as current developments - in a manner suitable both for professional reference and as supplementary reading for advanced graduate courses." --Reference and Research Book News, December 2013

"The chapters in these volumes address many of the most challenging economic policy issues facing both developed and developing countries and regions. The books are required reading for anyone wishing to understand the power and range of computable general equilibrium modelling as an input to strategy analysis and policy making." --Larry Dwyer, University of New South Wales

"The rich CGE applications presented in these volumes show that CGE modeling is a vital tool for policy analysis. These chapters will be valuable resources for students and scholars who are interested in new insights and developments." --Jian Xie, The World Bank

and this is easily the most brilliant book I have ever read on ...
By Bethe
I have been a cross-cultural researcher, anthropologist, and professor for many, many years, and this is easily the most brilliant book I have ever read on the subject. It is written in accessible language (apart from the Introduction, which absolutely fascinated me but will likely scare many students) with many quotes from veteran researchers such as Tom Peacock, Linda Tuhiwai Smith, and more than 70 others from many parts of the world. Dr. Miller Cleary treats research in terms of "critical theory" -- whose questions? whose benefit? how to enter? what is respect? is IRB enough? What I most value are her treatments of identity and of culture. So many qualitative research projects these days depend upon both, but the "old chestnut" definitions I so often see quoted in dissertation drafts don't hold up to the demands of critical theory. They can impede even veteran scholars in realizing that ethics and even doing cross-cultural research will mean serious reconsideration of self.

This is a pricey book, and I borrowed a copy to read it, but I use it so much that I am going to buy it as soon as I post this review.

Surprisingly, the videogame had a better plot!
By Sean J. Hagins
Before i start this review, i want to explain that i saw the videogame first, so that may have swayed my judgement of this book.

The plot of the book is ok-with threatening letters and pranks (and sometimes more serious doings) happening to students and teachers at a girls boarding school. The only thing is, the videogame actually has a better structured plot! When the headmistress calls Nancy (and George in the book, not the game) to operate undercover and try to flush out the person responsible for the misdeeds, in the book she poses these 18-year olds as student teachers. At that age, they can pretend to be students-wouldn't that make more sense, because the students are more likely to confide (or let something slip) in front of a fellow student as one of their peers than a teacher? Also, the plot has been changed quite a bit for the game. But the thing is, videogames based on books are usually less cohesive than books-not more so (granted, i am referring to shoot-em-up games like Star Wars-Shadows of the Empire, which is a completely different genre. Since the book came out first, i would probably say it was an enjoyable read when released, but to me, a book, or movie loses all credibilty when a knock-off copy (whether a game, a remake of a movie, etc) exceeds it. Usually, remakes aren't as good in my opinion.

I'm sorry if this review dwelt on the game more than the book. The thing is-i played it with a friend, and that was the only reason i got the book. Which left me VERY disappointed

WOW!
By A Customer
WOW, what an awesome book. This mystery was full of atmosphere and great scenes (very scary). The overall plot is very strong and felt like a very traditional Nancy Drew story. The writing was above par, and I would recommend this kids and adults. This felt like a very traditional story in an updated format. More like this, please!

but this one was a bit of a disappointment to me
By Charles
(SPOILER ALERT, I'm going to reveal some plot points, although I wont reveal the identity of the criminal) I'm a fan of the Nancy Drew books in general, but this one was a bit of a disappointment to me. It takes off on such a fast pace that it seems like the author was just in a rush to crank it out. Nancy gets hired to look into a series of pranks at the school. She poses as a teacher's aid along with her friends. Almost instantly (unbelievably quickly) a note is left for Nancy. I'm all for getting our hero into trouble early into the book, but this one really pushed the limits of believably. The killer tries to saw through an elevator cable with a hand-saw, and apparently is fast enough to dive out a window to avoid being detected, but runs around in broad daylight with a cat mask and full "villain" costume without anyone noticing.

The explanation in the end was less than satisfying in my opinion. There are a lot of good Drew books out there, but this one is pretty low on my list. The plot didn't really make much sense, which I can sometimes overlook if there is enough danger and intrigue to make the journey worthwhile. (You know, if Nancy gets locked up and has to make a daring escape, or fight off a pack of ghost dogs...) this one just didnt have it.

Happy Sister
By Brooksie
I know nothing about Doctor Who but I got this for my little sister, and she ADORES it. The minute she saw the man's face she yelled out happily and began to read the first few pages before exclaiming that a Rose and Jack were in there. Don't exactly know what that meant as the first thing that came to mind was the Titanic when hearing those two names, but she hugged me plenty so the two must have been important. Either way, she loved it and said that 'Nine' was perfectly well written. 100% she rated it.

Best of the 9 era
By Susan Livingstone
I just finished reading "Only Human" for the 3rd time. And I *still* laughed out loud at this hilarious and sometimes touching book.

Ok, I have yet to read a Doctor Who novel that ranks as meaningful fiction (although "The Adventuress of Henrietta Street" takes an earnest stab at it), but with that in mind, all you have to do is slightly lower your literary expectations, raise your willingness to suspend your disbelief, and it becomes nearly impossible not to love this little story. Let's face it, if you're the sort who requires logical explanations, factual science, and plots that never betray the tiniest of holes, then you're not going to be a fan of Doctor Who in the first place. Just apply the same critical generosity to this novel, and you're going to enjoy it tremendously.

For one thing, the author HAD to have been working mostly off of writer's guidelines and finished scripts. It's possible that he, in fact, had never even SEEN an episode of the new series, since the book appeared on shelves a mere 5 months after the first episode was broadcast, if I have my dates right (according to the wiki, it was released September 8, 2005). I'm not at all sure how long it takes to write a novel like this, and what hoops it has to go through to get edited, published, printed, bound, and in the stores, but it's got to take several months, I would imagine. And if that's the case, then his ability to nail the characters so brilliantly is astonishing - you can truly hear the Doctor, Rose, and Captain Jack saying the lines they're given here.

As I said, this book is very funny. You won't just smile, or even chuckle - the humor here is of the laugh-out-loud kind, and I LOL'd many times before it was all over. If you're looking for emotion, it's here. You want some thematic depth, wildly imaginative ideas, thought-provoking commentary on the human condition, and nutty, non-stop action, that's here too. If you're a Cap'n Jack fan, you might bemoan the backseat he's relegated to, but whenever he DOES put in an appearance, it's invariably hilarious. If you are a Doc/Rose shipper, the book beautifully shows the tentative, ambiguous, indefinable relationship between this Doctor and his companion in its early days.

Well, some reviewers have said they were disappointed in this book. Obviously, you can't please everyone. But if you haven't yet read a Who novel, because you weren't sure if they were "adult friendly" or worth your time, start with this one. I'm betting you won't be sorry you did.

+++

Rose blinked and ran a hand through her hair. 'So we're not just thick, we're evil? Why d'you hang around us so much, then?'

The Doctor looked into her eyes, serious. 'You can be brilliant, terrible, generous, cruel. But you're never boring.'

A tribesman dressed in a garland of flowers, evidently some kind of officiating priest, ran up to them, slapped Rose with another oily fish and shouted, 'Let the ceremony begin!'

'See,' said the Doctor.

Mondays were Hope Petersen's favorite day. They were quiet days. Mondays helped her forget Sundays, where the family dinner table reminded her of the one person no longer there.

Hope stopped typing to stare out the window of her small office in the lower level of Three Corner Community Church. It'd been almost three years since Sara had died, and she could hear her sister's voice telling her to get over it already. To move on. Stop trying to fix Mom and Dad and get a boyfriend.

"Fat chance," Hope muttered.

Working in a small church consumed her time and kept her anchored to the northern Michigan farm community where she'd grown up. It wasn't easy meeting the right kind of guy.

Hope turned her focus back to updating the church website with the previous Sunday's sermon. Delivered by an elder on the board who was filling in until they hired a permanent minister, the notes were pretty short. And dull, from the looks of them. She was glad she'd missed it.

"Hello, Hope."

She knew that deep voice despite not having heard it in years. Hating the shiver that raced through her, Hope balled her hands into fists and looked up.

Sinclair Marsh stood in the doorway of the office, waiting for her response. His mouth lifted into the boyishly crooked smile she remembered well. That smile had always landed him whatever he wanted. That same smile had enticed Sara to follow his reckless, Pied Piper path to her death.

He'd aged. Could be the dark-rimmed glasses he now wore, which made his hazel eyes look like they'd seen too much. It didn't matter. His simple words of greeting turned her inside out.

"What are you doing here?" Hope's thick voice came out in a rough whisper.

"You don't know?"

"Know what?" Her voice grew stronger even though her throat threatened to close up. The church board had been interviewing for months. Surely they hadn't made their decision while she was gone.

"I'm the new pastor."

Hope clenched her teeth to keep from saying something she shouldn't. Too many descriptions came to mind when she thought of Sin Marsh, and pastor wasn't one of them.

He shifted his stance to make room for Judy Graves. Judy was an elder and longtime member of the church board. The backbone of the church, Judy was their financial guru as well as head of the volunteer program. And Judy happened to be best friends with Hope's mom.

Hope looked toward Judy. She wanted answers. "I thought you were going with someone named Smythe."

"I'm plan B." Sinclair stepped forward as if reminding her of his presence.

As if she'd forget. Why hadn't they told her?

Judy stared her down, sending strong messages of her own. "I'm giving Pastor Sinclair the tour. He'll need to see the year-to-date financials, as well as go over day-today stuff. I'm going to show him his office so he can get settled in, but I'll be back."

With a gaping mouth, Hope watched the two of them leave. Well, her Monday was officially shot! Thoughts spinning, she gulped for air, but the June breeze coming in through the open window wasn't enough. Suffocation was eminent if she didn't hightail her way out of there.

Grabbing her purse, Hope headed for her car. She tossed her purse on the passenger seat but didn't climb in. The wind ruffled her short hair and swirled the folds of her long gauzy skirt against her legs.

Of all the men they could have hired, why Sinclair Marsh? Since when had he come home?

She stared at the ripe hayfields across the road until her vision blurred with memories. Not quite three years ago, her dad's hayfield had needed its final cut. Hope could smell the sweetness of freshly cut hay—could almost taste the dust kicked up from the tractor. Sara's laughter rolled through her memory, too. Sara had been so full of laughter.

Hope was supposed to help her sister with that cut, but she'd gone shopping instead for her planned trip to Spain. Hope had landed a job with a worldwide missions organization and could hardly wait to leave.

Besides, Ryan Marsh was Sara's fiance and he and Sinclair had come over to lend a hand. Like always, they'd goofed around. Only this time, their antics had ended with Sara dead—crushed under the tractor after it had flipped. Sinclair had mowed a patch of grass into the letter S on the side of a hill, and he'd dared Sara to do the same….

Hope heard footsteps on the tarmac, but she didn't turn around. If it was Sinclair, she might just let him have it.

"You okay?" Judy touched her shoulder.

She flinched. "I can't work here."

"I had a feeling you might react this way."

Hope whirled around and slammed her car door. "But you hired him anyway!"

"It wasn't my decision alone. We interviewed him last week, and the board unanimously approved Sinclair after Reverend Smythe took a position downstate."

Hope reveled in the satisfaction that for once, Sinclair had come in second place. But the smug feeling was shortlived. "Why didn't you call me?"

"You were on vacation. I love your new hairstyle, by the way."

Hope shrugged off the compliment. She would have liked to have known about Sinclair. She'd have had time to prepare instead of seeing him out of the blue like this.

Even though she'd grown up with Sinclair and they'd hung around like pals, Hope had never felt comfortable around guys. Growing up with a mouth full of braces and a chest a tad too big made her want to hide. And hide she did—under clothes, hair…even her eyeglasses gave her a sense of protection.

Not anymore. She'd long since gotten rid of the baggy clothes and glasses, and thanks to the prodding of a girlfriend from college, Hope had finally cut her mop of hair. The two of them had spent last week in Toronto shopping and taking in shows.

Hope shifted her stance, wishing she could find a way to hide again. "I'm not going back in there. You're going to have to find somebody else."

Judy's eyes narrowed. "What about the school?"

For years the church had raised money to build an addition for a couple of real classrooms. The extra space would accommodate Sunday school classes and enable them to start a small preschool during the week. Hope also wanted to include a summer program. Too many single moms in the church had too few options during the summer months.

Hope had a dual degree in early education and Spanish. She'd been dreaming about running the educational interests of the church for as long as she could remember. As part of the building project committee, she'd researched state licensing requirements, commercial financing and local builders. The church had been poised to accept bids for construction once the pledges were paid. And then their previous minister had retired early due to health concerns and moved away.

Interim pastors and a wavering church body had stalled the plan. They needed the right man leading the charge to get the project back on track. Sinclair Marsh could not be that man.

"Without you, that school doesn't stand a chance."

Hope lifted her chin. "The groundwork's all there."

Judy scanned the surrounding fields before focusing back on her. "Sinclair has a new idea that's less costly. Some of the board members like it. A lot."

"What kind of new idea?" Hope could only imagine the irresponsible suggestions Sinclair might have.

"A youth center, Hope. He'd like to propose a place for teens to hang out and stay away from trouble."

"Out here?" Hope sputtered. Had they been in town, she could see the need for something like that. But they were a few miles out. Fruit farms dotted the hills and valleys between older homes, and new subdivisions had been halted because of the downturn in the economy. "That's a stupid idea."

"Well, it's an idea that struck a chord with the board, especially Chuck. We need you here, Hope. I need you."

She looked into Judy's earnest gaze, knowing she was sunk. Hope had promised her friend Dorrie that she'd never give up on the preschool, and yet here she was, ready to quit. All because of Sinclair Marsh.

Swallowing hard, Hope thought about another issue.

"What about Mom and Dad?"

"I believe with all my heart that God wants Sinclair to lead our church. I can't say I know why, but it feels right. Maybe in time we'll figure that out, but right now I pray your parents will give him a chance. I want you to do that, too."

"I can't." Her eyes blurred again. "Not after what happened."

Judy pulled her into a warm embrace. "No matter the influence, your sister was an adult who made her own choice to do something foolish. I know you miss her, Hope, but harboring unforgiveness toward Sinclair isn't good for you. It isn't good for anyone."

She shook her head against Judy's strong shoulder. As far as Hope was concerned, Sinclair was the reason she no longer had a sister.

"You've got to let it go."

Hope pulled out of the older woman's embrace. "How? There isn't a day that goes by that feels right. Dad misses Sara. I can see it in his eyes. It's like I'm left with clouds and can't make the sun shine again."

"It's not up to you to make the sun shine for them. They have to find that sunshine on their own." Judy squeezed her shoulder. "You think about that school. You have a calling for it. Can you really walk away?"

Hope sucked in her bottom lip. Judy knew the right buttons to push. God could work it all out, but what if quitting messed up His plan?

A youth center? Hope had talked Sinclair out of his set course several times when they were kids. Could she do it again?

Judy gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Come back when you're ready."

Hope watched her mother's lifelong friend walk away, knowing Judy was right. If she quit now, what chance did Hope have for getting the preschool project back on track? It'd fizzle and die—another dream gone.

An image of the completed addition blazed through her mind. Dorrie and her two girls were part of that image. They needed supervision over the summer break. Lots of kids did. Hope knew the community and its needs. Unfortunately, so did Sinclair. After all, he was a local boy returned home.

Tipping her head back with a groan, Hope stared at the blue sky above. Like it or not, people depended on her and she needed to get back to work.

Sinclair took in the small space of his barren office. He had a desk, a couple chairs and a bookshelf. He could easily see Hope's empty desk from his. The church offices had been situated along the side of the basement opposite the kitchen and an open area used for Sunday school and probably fellowship dinners. He had a nice-sized window with a view of hayfields, and beyond the parking lot, cherry orchards covered the hills and more fields.

He spotted Hope pacing. She'd changed since the last time he'd seen her. A family member's death did that to a person on some level, but he also detected a confidence in her that he didn't remember. Her outward appearance was different, too—so different, it had taken him a couple minutes to recognize her.

Hope had slimmed down, losing her college freshman fifteen and then some. With her bushy long hair cut into a short cap of dusky waves, she looked good. Maybe too good. And they'd be working together.

He'd searched online for ministry positions in northern Michigan for months. There were three churches in his hometown of LeNaro, but the only pastoral staff opening had been here—a community church three miles north of town and smack in the middle of cherry farm country.

He should have known that Hope might still work in this office. She'd worked here through college, but she'd been planning to go to Spain the summer he'd left. He never thought to ask about her during his interview.

He stepped away from the window. Knowing Hope ran the office wouldn't have made a lick of difference in his decision. He'd come home to make amends for his past. If he faced an uphill battle, it was no less than he deserved.

His brother Ryan barely spoke to him, and Hope still blamed him for Sara's death. He could see it in her eyes. Her pretty gray eyes that were no longer hidden behind Coke-bottle glasses.

Judy stuck her head into his office. "You okay?"

He nodded, even though it felt like he'd been hit in the gut by a ground ball that had taken a bad hop. "I take it Jim and Teresa Petersen attend here, as well. Maybe I should call and let them know."

It was his first position as a pastor, and he'd walked into a personal beehive. He could take getting stung, but for how long?

"I'll talk to them tonight and let you know how it goes." Judy's eyes softened.

"Thanks."

Three years ago, Judy Graves had encouraged him to work through Sara's accident by sticking around to face his part in it. Judy had been firmly in his corner during the short police investigation. It looked like she was still there.

"You're here for a reason, Sinclair. Don't forget that."

"It's why I came home."

Judy gave him a thatta-boy nod and left.

Sinclair glanced back at the window, where sunlight streamed into the room. He stood and opened it, letting in a cool breeze despite the uncommonly hot weather for mid-June in northern Michigan. He'd never grown accustomed to the oppressive heat he'd experienced in the years he spent in Haiti, but he'd managed. He'd worked through it. He'd do the same with Hope, if she'd let him.

Hope wiped her face with fast-food napkins that she had stashed in her car's glove compartment before stepping out of her Jetta. After a therapeutic cry and some soft music, she felt halfway ready to go back to work.

She spotted Sinclair reaching into an ancient candy-apple-red Camaro. He still drove that target for speeding tickets. He hadn't changed.

"Nice image for a minister."

He whirled around and smiled. "What?"

It was a cruel joke that a guy nicknamed Sin had such a tempting smile. She'd always called him by his full name. Not only did she like it better, but she believed using his full name shielded her from the temptation to follow his antics into trouble.

Sometimes it had worked. Sometimes it hadn't.

She pointed at his vehicle. "That car."

His smile only grew wider. "I'm not about an image."

Hope gave a snort and lifted one eyebrow.

Who was he trying to kid? He reeked with the same reckless charm he'd always had. All show and no substance, like the ridiculously fast car he'd driven since high school.

"That car will do you no good come winter, you know."

Hope sounded like somebody's mother. No, worse, someone's grandmother.

Sinclair's smile widened. "I know. I'll figure it out."

He was good at doing that. He constantly lived with a no worries now, figure it out later mentality. She remembered a youth rally they'd attended, and Sinclair had confided in her that he'd been called to the ministry. He'd bragged to her that he'd pastor a church someday, but she'd laughed at the idea. Hope hadn't believed he'd follow through. Yet here he was, her new pastor.

He walked toward her. "I'm worried you might quit."

"I might."

"Please don't."

"Why?" Hope enjoyed watching him squirm for an answer.

Then he looked at her with intense eyes and said, "Because I need you."

How many years had she dreamed of hearing those words come from him? Hope swallowed hard and looked away. Sinclair Marsh never needed anyone.

"That bothers you." His voice was laced with empathy.

"You bother me." Hope didn't want his understanding. She didn't want anything from him anymore.

"I'm sorry to hear that." His voice softened.

Was that regret she read in his eyes? She quickly looked away again. "How 'bout you do your job, and I'll do mine."

"Our jobs cross. We're going to end up in the middle of that intersection quite a bit. What then?"

He made a good point. How in the world were they going to go about their day-to-day duties without crashing into each other? "We'll just have to deal with it."

His gaze softened further. "Hope—"

She held her hand up to stop him from talking about Sara. "Don't go there."

"We have to. Eventually."

"Maybe, but not today." Hope turned and headed for the church office.

Fun Romance with a Great Story
By Twin Willows Farm
Nothing ruins your day like learning your old flame is your new boss - and your new pastor. Especially when your old flame never returned the feelings - and was involved in your sister's accidental death.

Hope Petersen would like nothing more than to quit and walk away, but if she does, she loses her chance of opening a Christian preschool. Sinclair Marsh would rather use the money to build a youth center for the teens.

Working side-by-side as pastor and secretary, they are thrown together far too often for comfort. Sinclair hardly recognizes his "buddy" from their teen years. Hope can't trust Pastor Marsh isn't the same reckless young man she knew as Sin.

Sparks fly from the first page in this rollicking and spirited romance. Plenty of twists to keep the reader turning the pages. I can highly recommend this book!

Book 2
By M. Palmer
Michigan Seasons
Book 2

Sinclair has returned after running for three years. He's taken the job of minister in a local church and wants to make amends to those he hurt. His brother, Ryan, lost his fiancee after Sinclair dared her. But when he sees his friend, Hope, again he realizes she has grown up and falls head over hills for her!

The pain of the accident can be felt by several of the characters. The characters were very well formed without much description. I especially liked Hope's mother who was the mediator and probably had a lot of influence over her father's change of heart.

The romantic tension started almost in the first chapter. Lots of stolen kisses and purely sweet scenes were in this book! Very well done!

Love Prevails
By Christine E. Johnson
Workplace romances are always sticky, but it's even worse when the new "boss" not only threatens to upend your treasured plans but turns out to be a childhood crush. That's what Hope Petersen faces plus the added complication that this man was responsible for her sister's death. Yikes! As the drama heats up, the sparks between them fly. Mindel carefully kindles the romance and then ramps up the conflict and the attraction until the breaking point.

This latest entry in Mindel's books set in Northern Michigan's cherry country is well worth the read.

A Love To Build On

After he crashes his sports car into a gazebo, Adam Holbrook is sentenced to spend thirty days rebuilding it—definitely not Adam's usual glamorous lifestyle. But when Laura Durrant, the contractor scheduled to help him, shows up, everything changes. Suddenly Adam wouldn't mind an extended sentence. And no one's more surprised by this change in attitude than Adam. As they work amid the sawdust and sweat, Laura teaches him about more than carpentry. She teaches him everything he's missed out on—a family, a relationship with God…and maybe even love.

Adam Holbrook stood and faced the bench of the Honorable Judge Hankins A. Wallace. The man seated there didn't look anything like what he'd expected. He'd envisioned the judge in a small rural town like Dover, Mississippi, to be a balding, overweight, quirky character with horn-rimmed glasses perched on the end of his nose. One look at this magistrate had given Adam his first moment of concern.

Judge Wallace was stern-faced and imposing, and it had nothing to do with his being elevated behind the bench. Broad shoulders, steely brown eyes and a set to his jaw that made it clear he was in charge. Adam's throat went dry. He glanced over at his court-appointed attorney. He'd considered calling his own attorney yesterday after he'd been arrested for reckless endangerment and destroying public property, a result of his accidently running his car into the town's park and damaging a small building. But his attorney was also his most recent girlfriend and the relationship had ended badly, so he'd chosen to go with a court-appointed lawyer. Now he questioned that decision.

"Adam Holbrook?"

"Yes, Your Honor." He put as much respect and sincerity into his tone as possible.

"Were you driving drunk in my town, Mr. Holbrook?"

"No, sir."

The judge's dark gaze pierced him from across the room. "So, then what were you doing when you decided to destroy our beloved landmark?"

He opened his mouth to protest, then changed his mind. Better to eat crow and be on his way. In twenty-eight days he had to be seated at the board of directors meeting of his father's company, Holbrook Electronics, or lose the yearly allowance from his trust fund forever. There were no excuses acceptable. Either be in Atlanta on time or face financial ruin. "I was trying to use the GPS on my phone."

The judge nodded knowingly and glanced at the papers on his desk. "Uh-huh. Well then, let's get straight to it. I'm sure you're anxious to get this over with."

Adam allowed a small grin. "As a matter of fact I am. I have interests in Atlanta that require my immediate attention." He was pleased with his calm, respectful tone. Hope rose. All he had to do now was meet the bail, pay any fines and he could be on his way.

"Do you now?" Judge Wallace took the folder in front of him in his hands and scanned the contents. "It says here you're some kind of minor celebrity. That you like to indulge in all manner of extreme sporting adventures." His tone was thick with disapproval.

Hope took a nosedive. He might have grossly underestimated this small town's justice system. He waited, a heightened sense of anticipation sparking his nerves, similar to the sensation he experienced right before he jumped out of a plane or dived off a cliff.

The judge leaned back in his chair, frowning. "We do things a bit differently here in Dover, Mr. Holbrook. We believe in the punishment fitting the crime."

"I'll be more than happy to have the structure repaired, Your Honor." That should score a few points.

"That's good to hear. That's what I had in mind, as well. You see, that wasn't any old structure you crashed your flashy silver car into. That was an historic landmark. It's the symbol of this town. It's one hundred and thirty years old and we're rather fond of that gazebo."

A small bead of sweat trickled down his back. "Yes, sir."

"So, here's what you're going to do." The judge straightened in his chair and banged his gavel on the bench. "You're hereby sentenced to thirty days under house arrest. And you will spend those days rebuilding the gazebo you damaged. Any spare hours will be spent doing community service."

Adam struggled to grasp what the judge had just said. He couldn't be serious. "Your Honor, I have urgent personal matters in Atlanta that require my presence."

The judge shook his head. "That's unfortunate. Thirty days."

No. Thirty days would mean he'd miss the deadline. There were no contingencies with the rules of his trust fund. No leeway. He either showed up for the meeting or he was cut off. Permanently. Once Arthur Holbrook made a decree it was carved in stone. Especially something like this. "Your Honor, what about bail? I'm able to meet any amount you deem equitable."

"Yes, I'm sure you're more than able. That's the point, Mr. Holbrook. I suspect buying your way out of things is a bad habit with you. No bail."

"Your Honor…"

The judge held up his hand. "I figure that gazebo damage is well within the felony limits. You're fortunate that no one was injured in your little stunt or you could be facing manslaughter charges."

Dryness in his throat made it hard to swallow. He had been greatly relieved that no one had been injured, but he couldn't afford to be stuck in rural Mississippi for a month. He searched frantically for a way out of this mess. He looked to his attorney, who shrugged and shook his head. He was on his own. A surge of anger rushed through his veins. What else was new? Adam faced the bench again. He flashed his most engaging smile. "With all due respect, sir, I don't know how to repair that building."

"I suspect not. That's why I'm assigning an expert to help you out. And because you're such an unusual case, you'll be housed with a local family instead of the jail, and you'll be wearing an ankle monitor at all times until you've completed your sentence."

The tone of the judge's voice and the look in his eyes told Adam there was no point in trying to press his case. He'd have to find some other way to get home in time. Missing the yearly meeting with his father was out of the question. He had to be in Atlanta on time or lose everything.

Laura Durrant shut the tailgate on her truck and walked to the cab, pulling herself up into the driver's seat. She'd stopped by her workshop to pick up the tools she would need to get everything secured at the gazebo.

Her heart ached when she thought about the damage the accident had caused. Some daredevil rich guy had lost control of his sports car and driven through the fence surrounding the courthouse square and rammed into their historic gazebo. Now it was up to her to fix it.

As a licensed contractor and builder, her company, LC Construction, specialized in restoring old homes and buildings. Her job was physically and mentally stressful, but she loved every second of it. At least she usually did. At the moment she had more work than she could handle and more problems, too.

She was still kicking herself for agreeing to this project. Her uncle, Judge Wallace, was fond of sentencing those who passed through his court to unusual punishments. Normally she applauded the idea, but this was the first time the punishment had included her. When her uncle had requested her help, she'd been eager to repair the gazebo. No one would do it more lovingly or more accurately than she would.

What she disliked was having to work with Adam Holbrook for the next thirty days. She didn't have time to rehabilitate some spoiled rich guy who had nothing better to do than tool around the country in his vintage sports car. He would only get in the way and slow things down. Unfortunately, she had no choice. But she would make sure he pulled his weight.

One thing she knew for certain. The gazebo would be restored in time for the Founder's Day Festival, Dover's most important event of the year. She'd do whatever it took to make sure that happened.

Adam followed Officer Don Barnes down the hallway, the weight of his newly attached ankle tracking device a grim reminder of his fate. He'd been processed for his house arrest. Now he was being taken to meet his jailers.

Once seated in the back of the patrol car, Adam tried to think of some way out of his predicament. He touched the bandage on his jaw where it had hit the steering wheel when he crashed. He'd been lucky. No major injuries. A scraped jaw, a bruised shoulder and a seriously wounded ego were all he'd suffered. He'd gotten off better than the little gazebo had. He glanced down at his once-elegant silk shirt and the dirt marring his tuxedo pants. He probably should have changed when he left the party in Dallas yesterday morning, but he'd been anxious to get his newly purchased '63 Porsche 356 out on the open highway. He sighed, letting his gaze drift to his feet. He tugged up his pant leg and looked at the ugly black monitor. He was trapped. In a prison without bars.

Turning his attention to the scenery outside the vehicle, he shook his head with bewilderment. The streets along the town square were lined with what most people would see as charming old buildings and an even more charming old courthouse. To him they were just old, out-of-date and dull.

He liked things big and wide open. Dangerous. Risky. For fifty-one weeks a year he was his own man. He went where he wanted and did what he wanted. He'd surfed the big waves in Waimea, heli-skiied in British Columbia and raced a car at Daytona. He lived a life of danger and excitement other men only dreamed of.

At least he used to. Lately, he'd been finding it harder and harder to catch that high. The adrenaline rush wasn't coming as quickly, and the satisfaction from each thrill was missing. He'd been restless and irritable for over a year now and he could find no explanation for the sudden change.

The cruiser pulled to a stop in front of a large two-story white house on the corner that resembled something from a Norman Rockwell painting. Tall columns braced the wide porch. Broad front steps were decorated with pumpkins and fall flowers. Maybe this was a bed and breakfast. He could handle that.

The officer got out of the car at the same moment a man emerged from the house. He stopped at the edge of the porch steps and waited. When the officer opened the rear door, Adam got out, making a quick scan of the neighborhood. The street was lined with giant trees, the stately homes positioned in manicured lawns. Maybe staying with this family wouldn't be so bad after all. Still, he didn't like the idea of being watched over by strangers like some errant teenager.

He glanced up at the man on the porch. His stern expression said it all. He'd tolerate no nonsense in his home. Adam hid the smirk that fought to emerge. Just like his dad. My way or the highway. It was beginning to look like a very long thirty days ahead.

"Don, how's it going today?"

The officer kept a firm hold on Adam's upper arm as he led him to the foot of the steps. At least he'd been spared the handcuffs. "Doing good. I brought your houseguest." He turned to Adam, a disapproving scowl on his narrow face. "Mr. Holbrook, meet your jailer, Mr. Durrant. This here is Adam Holbrook." Without waiting for either man to speak, the officer released Adam and placed his hands on his hips. "His ankle monitor is set for one mile. If LC needs more range, just have her call and we'll adjust it. You need me to go over anything before I go?"

"No, Don. Hank and I worked it all out. Thanks. I have it from here."

The officer offered a small salute and walked off. Adam squared his shoulders and faced the man. Whatever it was, he would endure. He'd jumped out of helicopters. Surviving a month in a small town should be a piece of cake.

The man came closer toward him, a warm smile on his face. Adam's guard went up. What kind of people would welcome a prisoner into their home?

"I guess Don was in a hurry to get back to work. I'm Tom Durrant. Welcome to our home, Mr. Holbrook." He held out his hand.

Adam grasped it, surprised to find the hand strong and calloused. It didn't fit with the stately old home. Adam had always been good at knowing when someone was conning him. Something was going on here.

Durrant turned and went back up the steps, motioning for Adam to follow. Mr. Durrant looked to be late fifties, early sixties. Tall, broad-shouldered, with silver-gray hair, his quick movements spoke of a man in good shape physically. So what was the catch?

Inside the house, Mr. Durrant stopped in the foyer and waited for him to enter, that same pleasant smile on his face. "I know you're anxious to get settled, but I think we need to have a little talk first. Are you hungry? Did you get breakfast this morning?"

"No, sir." Adam followed him into a bright sunny kitchen at the back of the house. The room was large with a round table positioned in a cozy corner filled with windows.

"I thought not. Have a seat and I'll get you fixed up. Coffee?"

He nodded, growing more confused by the moment. Was this where he'd stay? What was going on? Were they trying to kill him with kindness for damaging the little gazebo in the square? Cruel and unusual punishment for sure.

Adam sat down, realizing how out of place he looked in his bedraggled tuxedo. This kitchen was more suited to the jeans and polo shirt his jailer was wearing. Mr. Durrant returned to the table with a plate of cinnamon rolls and a steaming cup of coffee, which made Adam's stomach growl. He'd barely touched his food since being arrested yesterday.

"Here ya go. Eat up. Those rolls were homemade this morning by my wife. She's a great cook."

Adam eyed the man suspiciously. "Thanks." Mr. Durrant waited while Adam doctored his coffee with a little cream and sugar and took a roll from the plate.

"I imagine you have some questions. Let me go over the high points and then I'll show you to your room. Number one, this will be your home for the duration of your sentence. You will be allowed to wander anywhere on our property, but nowhere else. Check-in is whenever you stop work for the day, and you're required to call the police station within five minutes of your arrival here. You'll be picked up for work each day and brought home each night. Oh, and only one phone call per day."

He pulled a cell from his shirt pocket that Adam instantly recognized as his own. He started to reach for it. Mr. Durrant shook his head.

"Sorry. I know how you young people live and die by these things, but we'll keep it down here on that table over there. You can make your calls in here." He smiled. "Don't worry, we'll give you all the privacy you need."

Adam swallowed a bite of cinnamon roll. It was the best he'd ever tasted, but he wasn't in the mood to truly enjoy it. "Is that all?"

Clasping his hands on the table, Mr. Durrant leaned toward him. "Treat my wife and me with respect, behave yourself and everything should be fine. Any other questions?"

Love in a gazebo
By Cynthia Leavelle
Restoring His Heart has a satisfying mix of growing love and spiritual enlightenment. Our hero evolves from a sell-centered extreme sports fanatic to a man capable of loving God and a woman and of sacrificing everything to care for her. The theme of restoration gives hope for all of us who think we can't be fixed. Beatty makes us care about the characters and the little town of Dover, Mississippi.

Great couple
By M. Palmer
Home to Dover
Book 2

What an interesting story - unusual for a LI book! The hero is actually on house arrest in Dover for a month after the judge orders him to help Laura Durrant refurbish the gazebo that he damaged while reckless driving. He just came out of a bad relationship and has a family who doesn't seem to care what happens to him. Unlike a lot of LI books, this doesn't all come out happy in the end...

I loved reading this book and watching both the hero and heroine transform and become a couple. They were attached to each other and there was no "He's not good enough" in spite of the fact that he was technically an inmate at the local jail! Laura's family took Adam under their wings and showed him what love was really all about, as well as re-introducing him to God. So lovely!

Loved it!
By Ashley
I loved this book!! I wasn't prepared to stay up late reading it but it was very hard for me to put it down! I loved how it was very family-oriented. The Durrant's are a very special family and they just touched me deeply. The romance was very well developed and very tender and sweet. I was utterly capitvated by the change in Adam Holbrook and his caring, compassionate side. He was a great hero and I also loved Laura's strength, sassiness, and heart for others. It was a remarkable read and the perfect book to curl up with...
