From Library Journal
Published in 1984, 1981, and 1982, respectively, these novels feature action, intrigue, violence, and murder. In the Hitchcock vein, they also portray protagonists who are just ordinary people?a professor, an architect, and a fishing-boat captain?who are dragged into extraordinary circumstances. LJ's reviewer found Death in China "tautly written," adding that Montalbano and Hiaasen have a "fine flair for characters and settings" (LJ 4/1/84).

Review

“A tautly written, fast-paced thriller that captures the real China.” — The New York Times“A terrific story. . . Montalbano and Hiaasen have brought it off splendidly.” — Time“Montalbano and Hiaasen have created a . . . maelstrom of intrigues, deceits, lusts, and canards. Like China itself, what often seems to be too implausible turns out to be real.” —The Wall Street Journal

From the Inside Flap
An American investigating his mentor's murder finds himself ensnared in a web of lies and treachery in China, where even tomorrow's weather is a state secret. From a nightmarish interrogation to assassination by cobra, A Death in China takes readers on a trip with no rest stops through a world of claustrophobic mistrust and terrifying danger.

Unmemorable
By A Customer
Hiassen fans will be disappointed. This book has none of the characteristic twisted, insane humor of most of his work. In fact, it is a rather formulaic spy/action/thriller book. If it were a movie, it would star Jean-Claude VanDamme. This is not to say that it is a bad book, per say, but it is very predictable. It has all of the usual elements, and though it does have some interesting bits here and there, it is ultimately just another predictable spy/action/thriller book.

Love Carl Hiaasen. This book is not the normal funny story line with odd ball characters. A good summer read.

The Steel Wedge: U.S. Marine Corps Armor in Pacific Island Combat, by Eric Hammel

Conceived as a visual record rather than a definitive history, The Steel Wedge is a substantial photographic archive—246 photos, many never before published—focused on the coming of age of U.S. Marine Corps tanks, tank destroyers, and armored amphibian tractors through the Pacific island-hopping campaign from earliest pre-war development to Okinawa in 1945.

A slice of the Marine Corps experience in the Pacific Theater during World War II, The Steel Wedge employs explanatory captions and narrative text to supplement its large and broad array of combat photographs. It is the first book ever to focus mainly upon this outstanding photographic record.

The Steel Wedge: U. S. Marine Corps Armor in Pacific Island Combat; A Pictorial Record
By Ray Stewart
Eric Hammel has given us yet another magnificent book! A "pictorial record" indeed, but so much more. "The Steel Wedge" speaks not just to the legendary bravery of Marines in general and the Marine Tanker in particular in the WWII Pacific War campaign, but develops for the reader the moment-by-moment, face-to-face brutality of an often-fanatical enemy. At one end of the battle environment spectrum there's the Marine and his enemy, at the other end is the larger strategic picture of the development of Marine Tank/Infantry tactics and Navy/Marine Corps Amphibious Doctrine. And, almost as an aside, Hammel helps the reader understand how our Navy/Marine Corps Team developed amphibious capability - equipment, training, tactics, doctrine - required to defeat a fight-to-the-death enemy dug into the rocks strewn across the Pacific. He details not just how Marine "boots" negotiated the beaches and jungle to carry the battle to the entrenched enemy in fortified positions but how tanks were used to facilitate the success of these bloody assaults.

Hammel's liberal use and placement of official photographs (i.e., the title "A Pictorial Record"!) complements his narrative, expanding the story of Marine Tankers' action without a lot of wasted words. In fact, many of the pictures are their own study and tell a significant part of the story of day-to-day living (and dying) of Marine Tankers in their fight against both the enemy and the environment, and with the "system".

With the opening 10 pages of the first chapter - "Marine Corps Tanks: A Beginning" - Eric takes the reader briefly from 1775 to the late 1930s and the preparation for the coming amphibious offensive. Commencing with the chapter on Guadalcanal, one joins the Marine Tankers in their fight through the WWII Pacific Campaign, island after island, from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. The pictures and narratives are enhanced by the 17 detailed maps, a glossary, and some of the abbreviations in common use at the time of the 13 the assaulted enemy bastions.

The introduction of Marine tanks in the WWII Pacific was with M3A1 Gun Tanks and their assault across the beaches of Guadalcanal. There was no written tank/infantry or Navy/Marine coordination doctrine at the time. Only the imagination and resourcefulness carried the fight. Tankers couldn't see where they were going and the Grunts couldn't communicate with the Tank crew to provide direction. "Operator error" and equipment malfunctions accounted for the majority of the tank losses on Guadalcanal. However, by mid-1943, while both doctrine and equipment modifications proved helpful in New Georgia, the deep mud and impassable terrain limited the successful deployment of tanks on Bougainville. Tarawa was a different story. Newly developed tactics, the new M4A2 tank with better communications - but mostly the bravery of Tankers and Grunts - overcame the enemy and terrain with assault after assault of a dug in, fight-to-the-death enemy to a nail-biting - and never assured - victory. And so it went - the new M5A1 tank and supporting equipment and training, with constantly upgraded tank/infantry tactics, battled across New Britain, Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and, finally - Okinawa.

Signature Eric Hammel brings these "dots in the Pacific", where thousands of brave Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines fought - to this day and to most, still not much more than dots - to life and death as no other author and scholar could.

From the day-to-day grit and blood of amphibious assaults across the Pacific Island beaches from the sea to final victory - with all the pieces between - Eric Hammel holds his readers. While doing so he focuses on the fledgling Marine Corps Tanker Community for special recognition.

Steel Wedge
By J. Budde
I picked the Kindle version and will say it was easy reading on my laptop, the majority of the material I have seen before which is why I rated the publication average. Hard to say if it's the authors fault or that I read a lot on this subject matter, most likely the latter.

Thoughts Matter: Discovering the Spiritual Journey (The Matters Series), by Mary Margaret Funk

Cassian taught that real intimacy with God in prayer demands renouncing one's former way of life, the thoughts belonging to that former way of life, and one's very idea of God. In Thoughts Matter, Mary Margaret Funk focuses on the second of these: renouncing the thoughts belonging to one's former way of life. Her eight chapters focus on different thoughts"-food, sex, anger, dejection, acedia (profound weariness of the soul), vainglory (taking credit for good actions), and pride.

Funk explains well how failure to control these thoughts can undermine our spiritual life, and she instructs readers on how effectively to overcome these thoughts and to focus instead on thoughts in harmony with God's will. The result is an experience of joy, hope, and freedom from enslavement to our appetites. Readers will come away enlightened, strengthened, and inspired to delve more deeply into a life of intimacy with God.

Tradition retrieval
By Ann
In Thoughts Matter (Discovering the Spiritual Journey) Sr. Meg retrieves for us in contemporary language and modern day settings what John Cassian wrote about in the 4th century. How by knowing our thoughts and stabilizing them we can seek union with God who is our heart's desire. Since reading Thoughts Matter I have become aware of my thoughts, which ones lead me to God (virtues), which ones lead me away from God (vices) and how to catch them at the earliest opportunity. My thoughts are in service of my relationship with God and a skilful means of sustaining that relationship. Also Thoughts Matter has been a great help to me in creating an ever presence of a Christ consciousness in my life. Thanks Sr. Meg for highlighting this desert tradition. Ann F.

Clearly explains the thought process
By Karen
In her book Thoughts Matter, Meg Funk clearly lays out the thought processes and how we can give conscent to the thought or let the thought go. We are face with so many decisions everyday, if we are not aware of where or how these thoughts are affecting our lives, our drives, or our moods, how can we change the things in our lives that need to be changed? This book is well written and easy to understand. Meg Funk gives clear and natural human examples. Enjoy

Good content, poorly organized
By Mark Schenk
The author provides some good food for thought in this book as she attempts to make the writing of John Cassian and the desert fathers accessible to the average reader. Unfortunately, the book is burdened by poor organization and writing style that often distracts the reader from the point she is trying to make. Sentences often seem disjointed and there are frequent, unnecessary repititions. A good editor could have greatly improved this book, and it is worth improving. Perhaps some day we will see a second edition.

Highlander Betrayed (Guardians of the Targe Book 1), by Laurin Wittig

Hidden deep in the rugged Scottish Highlands lies the Highland Targe, an ancient relic guarded for centuries by clan MacAlpin. It is said the Targe can shield the heart of the Highlands from invaders and now, as part of his plan to crush the Scottish rebellion, the English king wants the Targe for himself...

Rowan MacGregor, orphaned niece to the chief of the MacAlpins and the rock her family depends upon, is worried. With the dwindling health of her aunt, the Guardian of the Targe, the protections that have kept the clan safe and prosperous are fading, and the new Guardian, one of her cousins, has yet to be chosen. Rowan wants nothing more than to see the clan protected again, but when it seems that will never happen, she despairs—even when a handsome and charming stranger comes to her aid.

Nicholas fitz Hugh is not what he seems. Half-English, half-Scottish, he turned his back on his Scottish heritage early in his life, giving his loyalty to England instead. Now he is a talented and cunning spy charged with finding and stealing the Highland Targe for his king.

But when Nicholas finds himself falling for the bonny Rowan and wanting to protect the family she holds so dear, he is forced to choose between his king’s will and his own: Will he betray his king and his mission? Or will he turn his back on the woman he has come to love?

Review
"Laurin Wittig weaves a lush tale, filled with characters you love, and set in a world you never want to leave." —Tanya Anne Crosby, New York Times bestselling author

"Laurin Wittig has a gift for writing fresh, romantic, passionate Scottish medievals. Highlander Betrayed is one of the most compelling medieval historical romances I have ever read. It has everything: romance, smooth writing, an unpredictable plot, and a wee bit of the paranormal. I loved it!" —New York Times bestselling author Colleen Gleason

"...a great love story, complete with betrayal and magic...a real page turner." —Linda Hays-Gibbs, The Romance Reviews, 5 Stars

About the Author
Laurin Wittig was marked by her Scottish heritage at birth, when her parents chose her uniquely spelled name from a plethora of Scottish family monikers. At ten, she attended her first MacGregor clan gathering and her first ceilidh, where she danced with the hereditary chieftain of the clan. At eleven, she visited Scotland, and it has fueled her imagination ever since. She studied anthropology at Brown University before launching a career in the computer industry. But as a voracious reader, it was only natural she would become a storyteller too. She penned her first book when her children were young, writing whenever they napped. Her novel The Devil of Kilmartin won the National Readers' Choice Award for short historical romance, and all of her books have appeared on the Amazon Top 100 Historical Romance and Top 100 Historical Fiction lists. Wittig lives in southeastern Virginia with her two children, her husband, and their rescue Eskie.

Action-packed, Mystical, and an All-Around Great Read
By Past Romance
This. Book. Was. Fantastic.

I consider myself a fan of this author and have read all of her previous work. HIGHLANDER BETRAYED is yet another in her long string of spellbinding reads. Laurin Wittig carefully weaves her tales of love and romance into a rich tapestry of adventure, bravery, legend and lore. I just love each and every one of them!

In this book, which is the first of the Guardians of the Targe triology, she transplants readers to the Scotland of 1307. England's King Edward wishes to crush the Scot's spirit by stealing the Highland Targe, a relic believed to act as a sheild protecting the Highlanders. He sends his best and most trusted spy, Nicholas Fitz Hugh, to retrieve or destroy the Targe. Half English and half Scot, and a man with a gift for playing a variety of roles, Nicholas seems a very likely choice. But how will he feel about channeling his inner Highlander and returning to the land and people that spurned him, the bastard son of a hated Sassanatch?

Nicholas assumes the role of a wandering Highlander seeking his way home and makes his way into Scotland and into the path of Rowan MacGregor. Pulling her to safety away from a collapsing wall gives him just the entrance he seeks to the inside of the clan's walls. The walls that likely hide the Targe within. Rowan herself could be an important tool he could use to gain the information he needs to complete the King's mission.

Rowan is startled by her reaction to the stranger. His touch is oddly comforting in her world that is rapidly spinning out of control (literally, you will see when you read the book!) Could he truly be a man for her? Can he be trusted? Why was he just outside their walls at just the right moment?

Nicholas is a fascinating hero. He starts out as the enemy, the spy who seeks to destroy Rowan and her clan all in exchange for power, wealth, and the glory of his king. But then he begins to remember his Highland heritage, and finds himself feeling at home for the first time in his life. His journey is touching and powerful. His struggle is best summed up by this passage, which is one of my favorites, from the book:

"Damned weakness. He hadn't been bothered by a conscience in a long time, only doing what was best for himself, and the king, which was, after all, in Nicholas's best interest. Even in this assignment he let the king dictate his conscience, or the withered thing that might have once been his conscience."

There's a mystical element to this book as well, as the reader follows the story of the Highland Targe and it's legend and powers. Normally, I'm not a big fan of paranormal elements, but this novel carefully mingles it into the tale in a way that it adds greater depth and emotion to the story instead of being just a sideshow. It's an integral part of the history, the culture, and the clan.

This is a very enjoyable Highland romance that will keep you up turning pages into the wee hours of the night and daydreaming the next day about a world of wee beasties, weans, plaids, magical stones, legendary powers....and men weilding claymores. :)

Highlander Betrayed
By Lindsey
When Highlander Betrayed begins we meet Nicholas, who is the Master Spy for King Edward of England. Obsessed with the need for power and superiority, the king tasks Nicholas with finding and stealing the Highland Targe, a relic which is said to protect the Highlands from attack. Tasked with Nicholas is Archie, another spy for the King, and together they set out to steal the Targe at all costs.

In the Highlands lives a clan who has the Targe in it's possession, and among the clan is Rowan, a young girl who has long grown to love the family who took her in after the unusual death of her parents. Soon she meets Nicholas, who seems to appear out of nowhere to save her and her cousin from an accident, and she begins to feel things for him that she has never felt before. But can she trust this stranger or will he prove to be a danger to all she and her clan hold dear? Will betrayal come for her or the King? And will she be strong enough to do all fate has in store for her to protect her clan?

This book was an interesting read for me. I love reading of the Highlands, and I was excited to see how the author would write about them. Personally, I thought this book started out slowly, and it was hard to get into the story. I was not particularly a fan of Nicholas, but once he met Rowen, I enjoyed reading about their romance, and then their trials and tribulations as a result of the King's quest for power.

The conflict in the story was written very well, and I enjoyed the family elements. However, I must say that at times I was very frustrated with Rowan's family and their attitude towards her for something that she had no control over. I wanted to reach through the pages and shake them for their behavior.

Overall, though slow in the beginning, I was pulled into the story and the last 3/4 of the book flew by. I was excited to see how the book would end, and now that I do know, I would definitely consider continuing the series with book 2.

Please note that I received this book for free through the Goodreads First Reads program, and this is my honest review of Laurin Wittig's book Highlander Betrayed.

Breathtaking Scottish adventure!
By Nicole Laverdure
Again, a beautiful Scottish medieval romance as I love them.
I fell in love with this book HIGHLANDER BETRAYED written by Laurin Wittig.
It is the first book of her Guardians of the Targe trilogy!
This is the first time that a read a book by this author and to my surprise,
I discovered that she is truly a storyteller that kept my interest until the end.
The Highland Targe is an ancient relic guarded for centuries by the MacAlpins.
I loved her characters, but mainly Rowan and Nicholas. Rowan is the niece of the chief of the MacAlpins and of her aunt, the Guardian of the Targe. Being loyal to her clan and to Scotland, Rowan will do everything to keep the Targe safe. Nicholas, of Scottish heritage, is instead loyal to England. Being a spy for the King of England, he receives a mission to retrieve the Targe at any costs. However, when he meets her, sparks will flare between the two! What will happen when he discovers the relic? Will Nicholas feel torn between his love for Rowan and his loyalty to the King? Will their love be strong enough to survive a treason and betrayal? Will the Targe be kept in the Highlands or England? You will have to read this book to discover the answers.
I loved her other characters Scotia, Jeannette, Kenneth.
Ms. Wittig is truly a great writer and a talented storyteller worth discovering. I love her style of writing!
She is an author of medieval romance full of tenderness, love and adventure. I devoured this book!
If you are a fan of Scottish romance, you will enjoy a great adventure and will not be not be disappointed by this book. I highly recommend this book. I will definitely be reading more books by Laurin Wittig. I am looking forward to read her next book in her Guardians of the Targe trilogy. Thank you Ms. Wittig for sending me ARC and I wish to mention that it is my honest opinion!

The Sense of Dissonance: Accounts of Worth in Economic Life, by David Stark

What counts? In work, as in other areas of life, it is not always clear what standards we are being judged by or how our worth is being determined. This can be disorienting and disconcerting. Because of this, many organizations devote considerable resources to limiting and clarifying the logics used for evaluating worth. But as David Stark argues, firms would often be better off, especially in managing change, if they allowed multiple logics of worth and did not necessarily discourage uncertainty. In fact, in many cases multiple orders of worth are unavoidable, so organizations and firms should learn to harness the benefits of such "heterarchy" rather than seeking to purge it. Stark makes this argument with ethnographic case studies of three companies attempting to cope with rapid change: a machine-tool company in late and postcommunist Hungary, a new-media startup in New York during and after the collapse of the Internet bubble, and a Wall Street investment bank whose trading room was destroyed on 9/11. In each case, the friction of competing criteria of worth promoted an organizational reflexivity that made it easier for the company to change and deal with market uncertainty. Drawing on John Dewey's notion that "perplexing situations" provide opportunities for innovative inquiry, Stark argues that the dissonance of diverse principles can lead to discovery.

From the Inside Flap

"In this book, Stark takes the reader on a fascinating journey of discovery, from the socialist factories of Eastern Europe to the new media companies and financial trading floors of Manhattan. Excellent sociological exploration of innovation in organizations
By Jonathan C. Hall
You might not get it from the title, but this book is about the conditions that lead to creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in organizations. According to Stark, the presence of competing notions of value within an organization, or what he calls "dissonance," is one such fundamental condition.

A sociologist, Stark marshals the methodological and interpretive tools of his discipline to make his case. The book is a series of three "ethnographies" of modern creative companies, and Stark's analytical framework draws on figures in the tradition from John Dewey to Bruno Latour. But Stark also self-consciously expands his approach into what he calls "economic sociology." Whereas sociologists are often said to study values while economists study value, for Stark, value and values are part of the same complex, the same conversation, the same negotiation that results in companies creating new things.

The writing is crisp and engaging, driven by narrative in the ethnographies, but equally compelling in the analytical sections. The heart of Stark's argument -- and what he discovers in three very different cases -- is that organizations are better innovators who allow and encourage their members to use and express diverse ideas about the worth of their work, products, services, what have you. Stark writes, "The coexistence of multiple, principled standpoints means that no standopint can be taken for granted as the natural order of things. Creative friction yields and organizational reflexivity."

So, in a for-profit company making widgets, perhaps the marketing person looks for PR potential, the programmer for technical sophistication, the designer for beauty, the accountant for costs. Obvious, right? But the key to spurring innovation is to empower each of these points of view in a governance structure Stark calls heterarchy. "Heterarchy represents an organizational form of distributed intelligence in which units are laterally accountable according to diverse principles of evaluation," he writes.

Today, the old consensus on top-down management -- e.g. chain of command, "running a tight ship," etc. -- is disappearing. Hierarchies are not responsive enough to innovate and change directions quickly. Stark's heterarchies might be. And, of course, "innovation" and "survival" are increasingly synonymous. While this book is not exactly a survival guide, it offers compelling principles and cases that illustrate how and why organizations survive or not in our time.

Shaking the sociology of organization
By Jesse Lainer
This is a very welcome challenge to the prevailing consensus among organizational theorists (neo institutionalists). Instead of searching for "taken-for-granted" norms, procedures etc. as a way of explaining everything out there, Stark looks on the very cognizant, reflective manner through which actors build and dismantle institutions. The message is liberating--no longer to we need to look for things in the darkness that our subjects fail to see (that the analysts somehow is able to see). Rather, the goal of the analyst is to analyze the surface of behavior--to see how people consciously navigate their life. Not only is this approach more empirically oriented and realist, it also yields important insights regarding the role of consensus and lack of consensus in organization and more. This is like a breath of fresh air to both organizational theorists and economic sociologists!

From School Library Journal
PreS-K-Lyon takes off to the sky with this exuberant book. Jaunty, bouncing-off-the-tongue rhyming text names aircraft parts, lists different kinds of planes, and describes passenger air-travel experiences, repeating the upbeat refrain, "Planes fly!" throughout. Wiggins's retro-style illustrations amplify the cheerful tone with bright, bold colors and strong, streamlined images. A wonderfully diverse cast of passengers in the aerobus includes a nervous little girl and a little boy. Everything radiates excitement, safety, and competence-even the ominous thunder clouds part for a plane's passage. A reassuring rundown of events that happen between buckling the seatbelt and touching down for landing (including a snack and a nap) makes this title helpful to those new to flying, but it just might fly off the shelves where transportation books are in high demand.-Yelena Alekseyeva-Popova, formerly at Chappaqua Library, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. *Starred Review* From the opening sky-blue endpapers, showing the looping paths of paper airplanes launched by silhouetted children, to the concluding endpapers, in which a variety of planes trace similar looping patterns in the sky, this beautifully designed picture book focuses on flight. After introducing many types of aircraft, their purposes, and some of their features, it brings the viewer on board for the experience of flying in a passenger plane. Lyon’s rhyming text includes staccato lines that name types of flying machines and communicate the experience of flight, alongside original, childlike phrases, such as “Hand-built gliders / take-you-for-a-riders. / Big air buses / room-for-all-of-us-es.” The text leaves plenty of room for illustration, and Wiggins takes full advantage of it in a series of striking images depicting planes in flight, airplane and airport personnel, and a diverse group of passengers. The digital illustrations include a variety of lovely textured effects suggesting light, shadow, and movement. Color is used for beauty and dramatic effect in some scenes, for warmth or definition in others, and in one double-page spread, to create a modern landscape of farmland and mountains as viewed from the air. Children intrigued by flight will enjoy every page of this dynamic picture book. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan

LYON, George Ella. Planes Fly! illus. by Mick Wiggins. 40p. S & S/Atheneum/Richard Jackson Bks. July 2013. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-5025-7; ebook $12.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-5026-4. LC 2012030310.

PreS-K–Lyon takes off to the sky with this exuberant book. Jaunty, bouncing-off-the-tongue rhyming text names aircraft parts, lists different kinds of planes, and describes passenger air-travel experiences, repeating the upbeat refrain, “Planes fly!” throughout. Wiggins’s retro-style illustrations amplify the cheerful tone with bright, bold colors and strong, streamlined images. A wonderfully diverse cast of passengers in the aerobus includes a nervous little girl and a little boy. Everything radiates excitement, safety, and competence–even the ominous thunder clouds part for a plane’s passage. A reassuring rundown of events that happen between buckling the seatbelt and touching down for landing (including a snack and a nap) makes this title helpful to those new to flying, but it just might fly off the shelves where transportation books are in high demand.–Yelena Alekseyeva-Popova, formerly at Chappaqua Library, NY (School Library Journal)

Imagination takes flight in this masterfully illustrated, bouncing verse for the plane-obsessed.

Beautifully composed drawings thrill, as biplanes, jet planes, prop planes and seaplanes take to the skies. Wiggins applies an old travel poster aesthetic to his digital illustrations—and delivers on their promise of adventure, enticing readers into the world of air travel. Soaring into a vast blue sky, he captures the feeling of unlimited space, the freedom of flying. When they are on the ground, his planes are epic, mammoth machines. Even in a storm—with the light bouncing through clouds, illuminating the plane from underneath—the effect is idyllic. His choices, from a warm palette, excellent use of pattern and a texture that alludes to the use of linen paper, make everything about this journey feel special. Lyon’s informative, rhyming text touches on the mechanical (from plane parts and types) as well as the emotional (the experiences of both pilot and passenger). Her verse goes beyond enumerating a plane’s basic purposes to affirming the spirit of flight and exploration: “Climb through clouds / heading for blue— / just like a bird. / Air holds you.”

This exciting invitation to take to the air is one energetic and entertaining journey for adventurers and aviation lovers alike. (Picture book. 3-7) (Kirkus Reviews)

“For children intrigued by flight, Lyon has written an energetic and exciting book in rhyme about planes of all sorts: ‘Bi-planes/tri-planes/gotta-love-the-sky planes/Prop planes/jet planes/how-fast-can-you-get planes.’ With the look of 1930s travel posters, Wiggins’s intensely colored pictures show planes at their most glamorous, zipping between storm clouds and swooping low over forest fires. Even the in-flight snacks look appealing. Perhaps the golden age of travel isn’t over after all.” (New York Times Book Review, Children's Bookshelf)

Lyon packs an impressive dose of aeronautical vocabulary into her succinct survey of “bi-planes / tri-planes / gotta-love-the-sky planes. / Prop planes / jet planes / how-fast-can-you-get planes”—a vocabulary that’s neatly explicated in Wiggins’s sweeping spreads in which, for example, he underlines the loopy acrobatics of three “prop planes” with the straight contrail line of a needle-nosed jet. Meanwhile, leaving most of the defining of terms to a reader-aloud or knowledgeable tot, the author neatly shoehorns such things as “rudders, flaps / ailerons, tail” and “headset, radar / schedule, phone” into her jaunty verse. Segueing into planes’ uses and “your” possible journey, Lyon hints at science (“air holds you”) and outlines an experience that Wiggins brings to graphic life with deftly varied passengers in a pleasantly spacious aircraft interior; landscapes from the air; and a sunset lingering over city lights. His saturated colors, clarity of composition, strategic generalizations, and wealth of significant detail add up to a winning introduction that’s nicely capped by Lyon’s extension of the idea that “world’s mighty big / but there’s just one sky / and it’s yours to travel. / Planes fly!” joanna rudge

I recommend this book

This, and the other two books in this series are a hit with my children. If you have a little one who is fascinated by vehicles, I recommend this book.

Supersonic!
By ATH
I bought this last year at a reading by George Ella (who is a super fantastic human being). My son, then 2, was instantly in love with it. A year later, it's still one of his favorites, and it has helped us actually enjoy flying together a number of times. (The lines, "Eat a little snack / Take a little nap," have fully convinced him that this is proper air travel protocol!) Love it! Trucks Roll is great, too!

My little one loves this beautiful book!
By Mom Reviewer
My 2.5-year-old daughter first encountered this at the library last year and fell immediately in love. We purchased it about 6 months ago and read it together all the time. We even took it on her first plane trip. The book's illustrations and language are poetic. "The world's mighty big, but there's just one sky and it's yours to travel.... Planes fly!"
