Homer's Turk, by Jerry Toner

Spanning the Crusades, the Indian Raj, and the postwar decline of the British Empire, Homer’s Turk illuminates how English writers of all eras have relied on Greek and Roman literature to help them understand the world once called “the Orient.” Even today, the Classics frame the West’s relationship with the Islamic world, India, and China.

Review
Expertly traces how the Greek and Roman classics were used in constructing images of the East...This brisk and intelligent study shows the extent to which the classics created many of the presumptions (and prejudices) of the modern political world. (Stuart Kelly The Scotsman 2013-02-23)

In this erudite work of survey, synthesis, and analysis, Toner examines the ways in which English historians and travel writers used the classics as a scaffold for understanding and constructing images of the East through allusion and analogy. His scope is both broad and deep, exploring English notions of Islam, Arabs, and Turks, from the first forays into the Orient through the decline of British imperial might in the postwar period. The real strength of this work is the framework Toner establishes, arguing the flexibility of the classics, and their utility as a mechanism for British social cohesion and as a tool to separate Britain from the East...This is an excellent piece of scholarship. (Evan Anderson Library Journal 2013-01-01)

[Homer's Turk] gently chips away at modern scholarship about Western writing about the Orient...The merit of Toner's book lies in disabusing ideas generated by 'Orientalism.' Homer's Turk explores the world of early Western travel writing and observations about the Middle East and India. The question he tries to answer is how Europeans, who lacked any frame of reference except ancient Greece and Rome, tried to represent the East to their readers. This was a simple enterprise of making sense of a different world. A reading of the book makes clear that links between power and knowledge were more imagined than real. In this, he is among a new generation of writers who have taken a skeptical look at the issue...A splendid effort. (Siddharth Singh Mint 2013-03-31)

The work makes a useful addition to understanding Western ideology. (Publishers Weekly 2012-12-13)

An eminently readable, well documented, and informative book. (Dimitri Gutas, Yale University)

In this stimulating study, Jerry Toner guides us through an extensive body of English political works, historiography, and travel literature dating from medieval times through to the present that draw upon classical Greek and Roman authors to create images of Islam and the East. (Richard Hingley, Durham University)

Toner is a passionate and illuminating guide on the fascinating subject of how the classics has for centuries molded our perceptions of the East and continues to do so today. (Madeline Miller, author of The Song of Achilles)

Writing for a general readership, [Toner] covers in an accessible style a great deal of material from the Byzantine age to the present day, showing numerous ways in which allusions to classical authors have been used to express western (and particularly English) ideas of the East.
(Tim Rood Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2013-07-01)

This is an engaging, timely study of an important and challenging subject. (C. E. Bene Choice 2013-10-01)

Toner’s thesis is both convincing and important. Greek and Roman literature did crucially shape subsequent Western perceptions of the Orient and, in doing so, was only slightly less important than biblical references and Christian theological preoccupations. (Robert Irwin Literary Review 2013-11-01)

Pax Orientalis
By reader 451
Whilst there exists an abundant literature on Western perceptions of the Orient, most of it spawned by Edward Saïd's seminal work, there was never anything on the place of classics. Indeed, this is all the more surprising that Saïd's nod to the Greco-Romans was always perfunctory. Homer's Turk is a reminder that classics remained hugely relevant to European, and specifically British ideas about Oriental civilisations until at least well into the nineteenth century. Classical geography, ancient history, and above all the literary characterisations of Persians, Arabs, and even Indians remained of enduring referential value well after the works themselves had lost the authority they had enjoyed into the Renaissance. The author makes that clear, differentiating between the various uses of classics and classical reference: factual or rhetorical, for familiarisation or to exotic effect, or as mere social marker. The book is divided into two main sections, the first one thematic and the second chronological, with an afterword looking at twentieth-century cinema and, in the last chapter, American viewpoints.

Toner's view is that, whilst classics often served to underline 'us and them' characterisations of the Orient, and in the modern era to justify imperial rule over its peoples, this was not invariably the case. Classical authors could also help produce more even-handed portrayals, as in Gibbon's version of the rise of Islam, an account far more open-minded than earlier, religiously-inspired narratives. Classics were also invoked as proof of the ancient virtues of some Asian peoples, notably the Arabs in nineteenth-century travel literature, or more ambiguously the Turks, who were sometimes regarded as the descendents of the Trojans in Renaissance writing. Inevitably, perhaps, the best chapters are those on the late imperial era, simply because the sources are more colourful or outright shocking. Lord Cromer, that bugbear of the literature on Orientalism, comes in as true to form in his pronouncements on ancient and modern Egypt, for example - though even here classical allusions in the form of reflexions on the fall of Rome are also found to express anxieties as to the justice of British rule. The chapter on cinema, likewise, is a gem and is worth a few good laughs. But Homer's Turk makes its point while at the same time unearthing an impressing array of chronologically varied sources. Accessible but engaging, eschewing the pomposity one sometimes finds in such analyses yet challenging of perceived wisdoms, it has the qualities of the best cultural history.

Gibbon's Turk and Voltaire's Genghis Han
By Lortkipanidze
Homer\s Turk is a fascinating and compact description of Western opinion (especially that of the Brit's) on Turks. It turns out that Voltaire was not the only one to make the Turk a primitive barbarian (because he could not speak directly of his king.)
