What kid doesn’t want a pony party? Well, it looks like Tina, the birthday girl, isn’t so thrilled when—surprise!—two ponies arrive at her bash. Annie, Meg, and Jill, or the “Pony Scouts,” are assisting Jill’s mom with Tina’s party, helping kids to mount Inky and Splash and leading the rides. It takes Annie’s admission that she, too, was afraid of riding at first to bolster Tina’s confidence. This level 2 I Can Read!, the ninth title in the Pony Scouts series, once again offers a high-interest topic, which, coupled with plenty of white space, large-print text, and a watercolor illustration on each page, makes for beginning-reader magic. Grades K-2. --Ann Kelley

But when the Pony Scouts arrive at the party, they see that the birthday girl is the only one at the party who is not interested in riding the horses! How could this be? Pony Scouts: Pony Party
By BabyMo
One of my five year old twins discovered the Pony Scouts series at the library. Since then, we have borrowed many of the Pony Scouts books. This series of easy reader books was written by Catherine Hapka and illustrated by Anne Kennedy.
The Pony Scouts is a club made up of three girls. Jill seems to be the leader of the group by default because she lives on a farm with the ponies. Meg and Annie are her friends who love everything to do with ponies.
The Pony Party has the girls accompanying Jill’s mother to a younger child’s birthday party. Jill’s mother has brought the ponies so that the guests can have pony rides. The girls notice that the birthday girl is reluctant to go for a pony ride. Meg tries to talk to Tina, the birthday girl, and decides that the birthday girl is a snob who thinks she is too good to ride ponies. Annie takes a gentler approach and determines that the birthday girl is afraid to ride a pony. Annie reassures her, and the girl has a wonderful time.
I was definitely taken aback by Meg’s attitude. She has demonstrated that she can be impulsive in other pony stories, but she was outright rude in The Pony Party. She was directly rude to the birthday girl. Tina says that she is afraid of getting her shoes dirty, which is CLEARLY an excuse, and Meg tells her, “WHATEVER!” and walks away. She tells her friends that she thinks Tina is a snob.
Annie’s kindness demonstrates that we should never make assumptions about someone’s situation, and that kindness and compassion are ideal qualities to have. It would have been nice if the story pointed out that Meg’s behavior was rude. The implication is a little too subtle
I would still recommend Pony Party, but Meg’s rude behavior was definitely off-putting and this is not one of our favorite books in the series. This book is written at a second grade reading level, and will appeal to children from kindergarten to second grade.
