    From Booklist
*Starred Review* This is the story of how best-selling novelist Patchett (State of Wonder, 2011) became a writer. As a young child in California and, after her parents’ divorce, Nashville, she knew she had to write, and she was fortunate, as she so warmly and vividly explains, in her writing teachers—Allan Gurganus, Grace Paley, and Russell Banks—and in her success supporting herself by writing nonfiction for magazines and newspapers, beginning with Seventeen and extending to the New York Times Magazine, GQ, Vogue, and Gourmet. Patchett now assembles a retrospective set of 22 sterling personal essays to form an episodic, piquant, instructive, and entertaining self-portrait. She reflects on her family, life on a Tennessee farm, literary discipline and inspiration, and her failed first marriage. Her second marriage is central to her hilarious account of an RV road trip, and the full measure of Patchett’s toughness and daring surfaces in “The Wall,” a riveting account of her father, a captain when he retired after 30 years on the Los Angeles police force, coaching her as she takes the grueling admission test for the Los Angeles Police Academy. A self-described “workhorse” who has even opened an independent bookstore, Patchett is a commanding and incisive storyteller, whether her tales are true or imagined. --Donna Seaman

    Review
“I had been so engaged by Ann Patchett’s multifaceted story, so lured in by her confiding voice, that I forgot I was on the job. […] As the best personal essays often do, Patchett’s is a two-way mirror, reflecting both the author and her readers.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Patchett’s mastery of nonfiction [is] every bit the equal of her skill as a novelist.” (Shelf Awareness)

“All the essays were a joy to read...No matter your interest, you’ll find words in this book that speak to you.” (Real Simple)

“Each of the essays is its own delight and resonates with warmth and humor… If read straight through, the book presents a lovely and lyrical look at a life well lived.” (Library Journal)

“Patchett’s is a no-nonsense voice: clear, sane, companionable… [T]he funny, frank and nervy ‘The Getaway Car’ (possibly worth the book’s price) plunges readers, roller-coaster style, into the story of Patchett’s writing life—essentially, this collection’s real subject.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“[I]n this terrific, wide-ranging collection, Patchett demonstrates how a pro does it.” (NPR's Fresh Air)

    From the Back Cover

     A Globe & Mail 100 Selection

The New York Times bestselling author of State of Wonder, Run, and Bel Canto creates a resonant portrait of a life in this collection of writings on love, friendship, work, and art.

"The tricky thing about being a writer, or about being any kind of artist, is that in addition to making art you also have to make a living."

So begins This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage, an examination of the things Ann Patchett is fully committed to—the art and craft of writing, the depths of friendship, an elderly dog, and one spectacular nun. Writing nonfiction, which started off as a means of keeping her insufficiently lucrative fiction afloat, evolved over time to be its own kind of art, the art of telling the truth as opposed to the art of making things up. Bringing her narrative gifts to bear on her own life, Patchett uses insight and compassion to turn very personal experiences into stories that will resonate with every reader.

These essays twine to create both a portrait of life and a philosophy of life. Obstacles that at first appear insurmountable—scaling a six-foot wall in order to join the Los Angeles Police Department, opening an independent bookstore, and sitting down to write a novel—are eventually mastered with quiet tenacity and a sheer force of will. The actual happy marriage, which was the one thing she felt she wasn't capable of, ultimately proves to be a metaphor as well as a fact: Patchett has devoted her life to the people and ideals she loves the most.

An irresistible blend of literature and memoir, This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage is a unique examination of the heart, mind, and soul of one of our most revered and gifted writers.

"Just open your eyes and look at the world."
    By E. Bukowsky
Before Ann Patchett achieved fame as a novelist, she honed her writing skills as a contributor to Seventeen, where she worked for eight years. She also wrote articles for such publications as Elle, Vogue, Gourmet, and the New York Times Magazine. These free-lance jobs paid Ann's bills and taught her self-discipline, flexibility, and humility. "This is the Story of a Happy Marriage" is a compilation of Ann Patchett's most memorable essays.

All of Patchett's pieces are nicely done, but some are particularly meaningful. I was deeply moved by the author's account of the time she spent with her aging grandmother, who was gradually losing her sight, memory, and ability to think clearly. "The Mercies" is a wonderful tribute to the nuns, especially Sister Nena, who taught Ann to read and write when she was slow to catch on and thought no one would notice. Years later, Sister Nena and Ann reconnected; the two became close friends. Ann supported her former teacher with money for needy children and also offered her time, effort, and comradeship. She no longer regarded Sister Nena as a forbidding and judgmental presence. Instead she recognized her as an exemplary human being to be reckoned with--an independent, compassionate, hard-working, and indomitable force of nature.

With self-deprecating humor, refreshing candor, and lovely, expressive writing, the author generously shares details about her past and reveals what her experiences have taught her about relationships, intellectual freedom, and personal growth. The best entries in this collection are wise, witty, poignant, and refreshingly down-to-earth. Patchett discusses how challenging it is to find a partner who appreciates your strengths and is tolerant of your weaknesses; how fortunate people are who spend each day doing the work that they love; how important family is (even when our relatives disappoint us, they influence who we become); and what a great gift it is to offer others solace, a helping hand, and friendship when they need it most. "This is how we change the world," she says. "We grab hold of it. We change ourselves." (Four and a half stars.)

True stories from inside the real life and times of novelist Ann Patchett.
    By Sharon Isch
Over the past several years I have spent many enjoyable hours in the company of Ann Patchett's fictional characters and their joys and travails. I rank her "Bel Canto" among my top five fiction faves and probably always will.

Now I find myself here, greatly enjoying getting to know her real-life world--how she knew from childhood that she would become a writer, and used the profits from writing for magazines and newspapers to buy herself time to write fiction...the long history and impact of divorce in her family...why it took a crisis and an 11-year courtship to persuade her to have a second go at wedlock...why she hates Christmas, loves dogs and probably couldn't live without one, and loves kids but has never wanted any of her own...the many influences of Catholicism and Tennessee in her life...tales of adventures she's set out on as part of her research for books and magazine articles--like vacationing in a Winnebago and training for and passing the rigorous physical tests for becoming an LAPD cop....and the uproar that ensued at Clemson after it assigned its incoming freshman class to read "Truth and Beauty," her book about her friendship with Lucy Grealy, and how she handled that.

At this writing, I've read about three quarters of this collection of pieces written for or adapted from magazines, newspapers and speeches--most of them running about five or six pages, and a couple, including the title story, about 25 or 30. It's my plan to parcel out the remainder in smallish bits for those times when I'm looking for a quick read that's sure to be interesting and seasoned with food for thought. I can just about always count on Patchett for that.

    Good Company
    By Rita Sydney
Once begun on these essays, I finished them in a couple sittings, sorry to have my time with Ann Patchett come to an end.

Written between 1996 and 2012 for a variety of publications (Gourmet to Wall Street Journal) the author describes diverse experiences: touring in a Winnebago; watching Met operas in her home town at a big screen theatre; going on book tour; taking the exam for the Los Angeles Police Academy; staying at the Bel-Air hotel; opening her bookstore, Parnassus, in Nashville.

The title of the collection is from the essay that describes how the author came to marry Karl after over 10 years of on/off commitment but refusing to wed. She'd been married before years ago ("My divorce began less than a week before we were married.") and vowed never to divorce again.

Because Patchett's life is the background for many essays, Karl is a part of several: the RV trip, the rescue of the dog who became her beloved Rose, a memorable meal in Paris.

The author knew she wanted to be a fiction writer from an early age. Other decisions grew out of her early life. She and her sister "weren't the products of our parents' happy marriages; we were the flotsam of their divorces....I was still in high school when I decided I didn't want children....I would never inflict childhood on anybody..."

This is not to imply Patchett is an uncaring person. The two essays about her grandmother show patient loving support as the women declines. The final essay in the volume is about her relationship with 78 year old Sister Nena who as a young nun had a life-altering role in young Ann's life.

Rose, the rescue dog, was a big part of the author's life. During the pet's last year when she couldn't walk any more, Patchett wheels her out every day in a stroller because the animal still enjoys the scents, the breeze, the motion. When Patchett finally mourns enough after losing Rose and mentions to her sister the possibility of getting another dog, sister responds: "Some little dog out there has won the lottery and she doesn't even know it yet."

One of the longer pieces in the book deals with the process of writing. Patchett goes into some of what she learned from writing teachers. The need to practice writing she describes thus:

"Think of a sink pipe filled with sticky sediment. The only way to get clean water is to force a small ocean through the tap. Most of us are filled up with bad stories, boring stories, self-indulgent stories, searing words of unendurable melodrama. We must get all of them out of our system in order to find the good stories that may or may not exist in the fresh water underneath."

Having written several successful novels the author understands her own particular writing process. It starts in her head and for a long time there's no words on paper, not even notes. "It's like walking through a field in a snowstorm and for a long time I see nothing but the snow, but then in the distance there's something, a tree or a figure or smoke, I just don't know. I always have the sensation that I'm straining to see what's in front of me. The snow lessens for a minute and I catch a glimpse of an idea, but when I get closer the light starts to fade. I squint constantly. It goes on like this for a long time."

In introducing the collection the author writes, "The job of these essays had been to support art, not to be art, but maybe that was what spared them from self-consciousness."

Perhaps that's what makes these essays so enjoyably readable. The topics are explored in a lively, thoughtful way without being "arty." For example, about some advice a teacher once gave her, "It worked its way into my brain and then stuck it's foot in the door so that other bits of wisdom might follow."

This book is like spending time with an interesting person. I think other readers will find it so too.

Marriage Shock: The Transformation of Women into Wives, by Dalma Heyn

Relationship expert Dalma Heyn asks not what is good for marriage but what is good for women in marriage—a question, she finds, that promises a much different answer and more fulfilling lives
Marriage, as we are told, makes a woman complete, more womanly. Why, then, do so many brides discover that the fun-loving, passionate single gal they used to be has been transformed into a woman recognizable only as a wife—a woman who unconsciously represses her own needs, wants, and vitality “for the sake of the marriage”? Attacking the pervasive cultural myths that ask a wife to choose between her marriage and her own growth and self-expansion, Marriage Shock explores the ways in which wives can overcome deeply ingrained social and personal expectations and flourish both as wives and as individuals. This ebook features a new introduction by Dalma Heyn and an illustrated biography including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

    From Library Journal
The divorce rate is so high, Heyn contends, because newly married women are gripped by the vision of the self-sacrificing Victorian "angel of the house," suppressing their true personalities and needs not at the instigation of their husbands but in homage to this outmoded ideal. Aside from the fact that nothing but anecdotal evidence is offered to support this contention, the book's problem is that this is basically all it says; thus, it seems tedious though it is short. Many feminist authors, from Virginia Woolf to Carol Gilligan, have discussed the same issue in a broader context. Since the author's previous book (The Erotic Silence of the American Wife, LJ 6/15/92) was successful, public libraries may need to purchase for demand; otherwise, this title can be skipped.
-?Mary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, Wash.

    From Kirkus Reviews
A fervent but unconvincing argument that marriage as we know it is bad for women. A logical extension of Heyn's The Erotic Silence of the American Wife (1992), which looked at female adultery, this work is also based largely on anecdotal evidence. A longtime editor and writer for women's magazines (McCall's, Mademoiselle, Self), Heyn draws on a nonscientific sampling of letters and survey responses from readers of McCall's and New Woman as well as interviews with these and other mostly middle-class women. Her thesis is that when they marry, women give up most of what they enjoy about themselves in favor of a more conventional and proper version of themselves. The dutiful and good wife they aspire to be, she claims, is a middle-class invention first described fully in conduct books of the 18th and 19th centuries. Marriage shock, says Heyn, marks the moment of experiencing this split between what the woman is and what culture tells her she should be. That married women have a higher rate of depression than single women or married men is no accident, the author contends, nor is the fact that today most divorces are initiated by women. Excerpts from her interviews with various married women illustrate what Heyn sees as the suppression of desire and the absence of an honest relationship in marriage. Deception, guilt, and unhappiness seem to be the earmarks of modern marriage. Heyn's answer to this crisis? Revolutionize marriage. Overthrow those old-fashioned ideas about what a wife is supposed to be. Imagine marriage based on a new standard of sexual conduct in which women's desires are acknowledged as real. Think of pleasure, not self-improvement, of sexuality, not self-sacrifice. The kind of ``expert'' analysis of relationships that abounds in women's magazines, this all sounds as though it was conceived at least a generation ago. An "AHA!" Moment!!!
    By A Customer
This book provided what eluded me for decades - what turns capable vibrant independent women into Barbies, into Stepford Wives. I stumbled across it in my mid-thirties, great job, great income, feeling strong about myself and my abilities in the wake of a difficult divorce - I had remarried - to someone diametrically opposed in every way to the first hubby - and WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? I'm cooking dinner every night, watering all his houseplants, clucking about dustballs and forgoing bike rides and gym visits and nights out with pals to stay in and WHAT? sew curtains???
It wasn't due to husband demands, nor did I have Donna Reed as a mom, - I needed an explanation as to why I was so hellbent on being The Wife - and this book provided an answer. Ms. Heyn's use of interviews and anecdote show how cultural influences permeat our lives, their power rivalling the more direct influences of family and spouse. The accompanying historical evidences were factual and interesting to read. I am amazed that this book has not gained more of a following, as its simple message can be a boon to those newly married, wondering Is this all there is? or What was I thinking?
Ms. Heyn has seen the enemy, and shows it to us in a way that allows us to beat it.

A revolutionary way to save marriage.
    By A Customer
This important, quietly subversive book suggests that the only way we can save marriage is by radically overhauling it -- so it has room for real, live, whole women. If you've ever wondered why you (or your wife) felt flat, gray and depressed in the first, supposedly blissful year of marriage, or why over 60 percent of American marriages end in divorce, two-thirds of them instigated by women, you've got to read this book -- it's an eye-opener. Yet it is not even remotely anti-male, or even anti-marriage. Rather, it unmasks a couple of fictional cultural characters -- the preachy Witness and the impossibly Good Wife -- who possess us like dybbuks at the altar. This book is a veritable exorcism that can give you back the self you lost and the lover you married

A compelling, well-written new theory on women and marraige.
    By A Customer
I recently had the opportunity to read "Marriage Shock" & was absolutely riveted by this insightful treatise on what happens to women's identities after marriage. The book made me aware of a psychological phenomena peculiar to married women in which I have unwittingly participated for the last 14 years. What an eye-opener! Ms. Heyn's theory that married women subconsciouly & automatically, "edit" their behavior from their prior, single lives in order to conform to the role of "the good wife" is demonstrated by the fascinating, often quirky examples provided by the women who were the subjects of her interviews. The author's personal and refreshingly expressive style is just great. The reader can almost hear Ms. Heyn's voice as she reasons her way through some of the most engaging subject matter recently presented in print. This is a serious book, not a piece of Self-Help How-To fluff. Ms. Heyn is no Martha Stewart, and some of what you read may take you aback, but I think that you will be unable to put this book down. Any thinking woman who doesn't see a little of herself and every married woman she knows in "Marriage Shock" is not looking hard enough

    "I want your body."

Callie Matthews jerked around to see her boss, her very sexy Hollywood-plastic-surgeon boss standing only a few feet away in the foyer of his office. When he reached behind his back, the lock to the front door slid into place with a quick flick of his wrist.

"Excuse me?" she asked, thankful the office was now closed.

A naughty grin spread across Noah Foster's face, showcasing that killer smile that never failed to make women weak in the knees as their panties were dropping. Granted, her panties had always remained in place, but still…

Mercy, she was so shallow, because if he so much as crooked a finger for her to follow him into the break room and.

"Hear me out," he said, holding his hands up. "I know you want to catch your big break by acting—"

O-kay. So they obviously weren't having the same thoughts about him wanting to tear off her underwear in the break room. Such a shame.

"But," he went on, oblivious to her naughty thoughts, "I have a proposition for you."

Those last three words were like music to her ears. That break-room fantasy might come true after all.

"I have an upcoming ad campaign I'd like you to model for."

She shook her head. "I'm sorry. What?"

Model? The chubby teen that still lived inside her nearly laughed. But Callie had long since left that girl behind in Kansas.

Noah moved toward her, never taking his gaze from hers, never breaking that signature smile. "I'd like you to do the modeling for the ad to launch my new office across town."

Callie came to her feet and moved around the desk. "Obviously, you haven't thought this through."

He raked his eyes down her body, sending all kinds of yummy thoughts swirling through her overactive imagination. "Oh, but I have. And it's you I want."

Oh, baby. If only those words were used under different circumstances.

"You have tons of clients you could use," she told him as she turned and marched down the hall to the lounge to retrieve her purse. "Besides, I've never modeled."

Like most transplants to L.A., Callie had come eager to be the next actress that would make Hollywood directors and producers sit up in their chairs and take notice of her remarkable talents. Unfortunately, her agent couldn't get her any auditions that weren't embarrassing. So far she'd done a commercial for zit cream and one for STD meds. Yeah, not the claim to fame she'd been hoping for. But she had to start somewhere, right?

Wait, maybe that whole STD thing was why Noah wasn't so interested in seeing her outside the office. He did know that was purely acting…didn't he? She was free and clear in that department, especially considering her lack of sexual experience. Not that she was a virgin, but she might as well be for the two pathetic encounters she'd had.

"I just want a few pictures of you, Callie." Noah followed her and rested an impressive broad shoulder against the door-jamb. "The ads we're going for will showcase the natural side of surgery, how to stay young and fresh."

Callie mimicked his action and crossed her own arms over her chest and leaned against the counter. "But other than that minor chin scar you did microdermabrasion on, I haven't had anything else done. Isn't that false advertising?"

"Not at all," he argued. "If you had never been a client, then that would be false advertisement. But you're perfect, Callie. You're beautiful, the camera will love you, and you'll be on billboards across town. Tell me you don't want that kind of exposure."

Well, this was a giant step up from zit cream and STDs.

"You think this will help with my acting?" she asked.

    He shrugged. "It can't hurt."

There was a role coming up in an Anthony Price film that she would give anything for, and her agent had yet to get her an audition. But maybe if she had the right connections…

"I have a proposition to throw back at you," she countered.

Dark brows drew together as his eyes narrowed. "You make me nervous when you get that look. Last time you had a lightbulb moment we ended up with a cappuccino machine in the break room that shot mystery liquid all over the walls and the floor."

She waved a hand through the air. "Minor technical difficulty."

He sighed. "Let's hear it, Callie."

"You talk to Olivia Dane about getting me an audition for this upcoming film of Anthony's and I'll pose for you."

If Noah called the Grande Dane of Hollywood, who just so happened to be their number-one client and mother to the hotshot producer on the new film Callie was aching to get a part in, Callie would forever be grateful.

"I'm not asking you to have her give me a part," she went on when he was silent. "I just want an audition to show them what I can do."

God, she hated to sound as if she was begging, but, well…she was. She'd come to L.A. to pursue a dream, not to get this close and have a door slammed in her face.

Callie believed in fate and it was no coincidence she worked for the same plastic surgeon who catered to all of the needs of the most recognized woman in Hollywood.

"Please," she said, offering a sweet smile.

His brows tipped down as he tilted his head. Damn, he had that George Clooney sultry look down pat.

"Your agent can't get you an audition?" he asked.

Callie shrugged. "She claims this isn't the right role for me. But I can't prove myself if I don't get the chance."

He reached out, placed those large, masculine hands on her shoulders and all sorts of happy tingles spread through her. Mercy, she wanted those hands on her without the barrier of clothing.

One dream at a time, Callie.

"Your agent has been in this business for a while," he told her, his voice softening as if he were trying to explain something to a toddler. "Maybe she knows what she's talking about."

"I don't see how it would hurt," she insisted. "If I don't get it, I'm no worse off. But there's that chance I could land this and launch into something I've been dreaming of my entire life."

Dark gray eyes searched her face. "I can't call her. I know how bad you want this, but I couldn't live with myself if I threw you into a lifestyle that isn't as glamorous as you think it is. You haven't been in town that long, Callie. Why don't you ease into this? Anthony Price is a big deal."

No matter how sexy Noah was, she refused to let him ruin her dream. "Fine. I'll get this audition my own way."

He dropped his hands and placed them on his narrow hips. "Let your agent do the grunt work, Callie. Stars weren't born overnight.

"You're a beautiful woman. You won't have a problem getting attention."

Something very warm spread through her at his declaration. To think a man like Noah Foster thought she was beautiful, a man who created beauty for a living, was one of those compliments she'd keep locked away in her heart forever.

"I'll give you fifty thousand dollars to pose."

Callie froze at his abrupt offer. "Fifty thousand? Are you out of your ever-lovin' mind?"

He chuckled. "You know, when you're shocked, your accent becomes really strong."

"I don't have an accent," she told him. "And get back to that offer. Are you kidding me?"

His smile faded. "I don't kid about business or money."

Fifty thousand could go so far. Her parents needed a new roof desperately and she could buy them a second car, something reliable. God, how could she turn down this offer?

As she ran through the pros and cons—and there were definitely more pros—Noah's eyes studied her in that way that always made her nervous. For one thing, he was a Hollywood surgeon to the stars and she always felt as if he was analyzing her. Another reason was because, well, she found her boss drop-dead, curl-your-toes-into-the-carpet sexy. Why on earth the man was still single was beyond her.

Maybe he slobbered when he kissed—that was a total turn-off. Or maybe he was terrible between the sheets.

As she studied him, she knew there was no way a man like Noah Foster would be a slacker in the sack. The man exuded sex appeal, and he looked so amazingly perfect with clothes on she couldn't even imagine what he did to a birthday suit.

Noah offered that killer, dimpled smile as if to reassure her of her future. He was not fighting fair with those damn twin dimples, and she had a feeling her resolve was going to crumble about as fast as her panties would drop if he'd offer that break-room fantasy of hers.

Yeah, she knew she couldn't turn down that money. As much as she'd wanted him to talk to Olivia, she was grateful for the fact he had so much confidence in her to offer such a large amount.

"I'll do the ad," she told him. "If you're sure my look is what you want plastered on billboards."

Crazy thought, but whatever he wanted. He was the one paying.

"You're exactly the look, Callie. I want to capture that youthfulness, that innocence."

Callie laughed. "I'm not that innocent."

"You moved here less than a year ago and you grew up in the Midwest." His lids lowered slightly over those dark eyes as he leaned forward just enough to get into her personal space. "You're practically still a virgin."

Callie's mouth went dry because the word virgin instantly brought to mind sex, and the word sex hovered in her mind while Noah stood this close with his bedroom eyes locked onto hers.

    "I assure you, I'm not a virgin."

    Shut up, Callie.

"Good to know," he told her with that cocky grin. "But I'm glad you've given in to the pictures."

"Have you ever had to fight for anything you want or do you just flash that smile?" she joked.

Something dark passed over his face; his smile faltered, and he swallowed. But just as quick as it came, it passed. "You'd be surprised by what I've had to fight for and what I've lost."

None of her business, she told herself. Everybody had a past, and just because he was a rich, powerful surgeon didn't mean he'd had it easy. But this was the first glimpse she'd had of any kind of pain hidden behind that billion-dollar smile.

    She wasn't a virgin.

Noah inwardly groaned. Callie Matthews might not be a virgin in the sexual sense, but she was certainly very innocent because if she had any clue where his thoughts traveled when he thought of her, she'd be suing him for sexual harassment.

He refused to be so cliched as to date his receptionist, but damn if he didn't want to see her on more personal, intimate terms. He'd played with fire when he'd cornered her two days ago in the lounge. When he'd moved in closer to her, he'd noticed her bright green eyes widening, the way she kept nervously licking her lips…those sexy, naturally full lips that begged to be kissed. His female clients paid a small fortune for a mouth like Callie's.

Noah eased back in his office chair. She'd be coming in any moment and he intended to keep their relationship professional. No more touching, no more getting pulled under by her hopeful eyes and childlike dreams.

If Callie had any idea what she was in for in this Hollywood wannabe-actress cycle, she'd run back to that cornfield she came from. It wasn't all glitz and glamour. There was no way in hell he'd see another woman he cared about fall to the dark side of Hollywood.

The scars from his fiancée were still too fresh, too deep.

And between the house they'd shared that he had to go home to every day and her ailing grandmother he cared for, Noah had a sickening feeling those wounds would never heal.

And Callie reminded him so much of Malinda sometimes it hurt to even think of the bright way his fiancée used to light up over her future career. Callie was Malinda all over again…only this time he refused to get attached.

He raked a hand through his hair, trying to rid himself of the nightmare that still plagued him.

His fiancée had meant everything to him. He'd have done anything in his power to save her. But he'd failed. He'd failed the one woman he'd loved with his whole heart, the one woman he'd wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Noah refused to ever let his heart become entangled again. He honestly didn't think he could afford another crushing loss.

So there was no way he could talk to Olivia about this role for Callie. He was actually using the modeling as a way to keep her from slipping into a darker world that Callie had no clue about. If he could keep her satisfied with the money, the attention from modeling, perhaps she'd reach those stars in her eyes. Maybe she'd let go of this movie-star fetish.

He had to intervene and do something. And no, he didn't care that he was being devious. He couldn't stand by and watch another innocent woman fall victim to the ugly side of the industry.

Because he already had a nugget of worry where his beautiful, naive receptionist was concerned. He knew what he paid her, but he also knew she was always scraping by. Those few commercials she'd done surely hadn't sucked her into the dark world he wanted to keep her from…had they?

Cynicism had never been part of his life until he'd lived with an addict, and he hated that negative vibe that always seemed to spread through him.

The back door to the office opened and shut. He heard heels click down the tiled hallway, then slow at his office. Noah smiled at the vision that stopped just outside his door.

"Everything okay?" Callie asked, clutching her purse to her shoulder and her lunch bag with the other hand.

"Of course. Why wouldn't it be?"

She gave him a sideways look and a half grin. "Because you're never in the office before me."

That vibrant blue dress hugged her body in a professional yet sexy way, and Noah had to force himself to keep on track and not think about what it would be like to peel that garment down her body…or to think of how she managed to fit anything beneath it. She either had on a thong or nothing. If she was going commando… God, he couldn't go there.

"I had some things to do before my first client showed," he told her, trying to stay professional. "There's a little boy who was recently scarred due to a house fire and might be referred to me. I actually just hung up with a colleague about some options for this boy."

"I remember that referral." Callie smiled wider. "That's what makes you an awesome doctor. I was so excited when you agreed to take on his case."

Noah didn't want her to look at him like some type of savior. And he sure as hell didn't want to get emotionally involved with a child. Children were vulnerable creatures by nature and he worried that his heart simply couldn't take that level of commitment again.

"The boy's aunt is a good client and she asked if I'd look at him. That doesn't mean I can make him perfect. I just have to wait a few weeks because his wounds are still fairly fresh."

"You're at least giving him a chance and hope," Callie told him, still smiling and still looking at him as if he was more than just a doctor. "That in itself is so much, Noah. Don't downplay your talents."

"I'm not, but I'm going into this realistically. There may be nothing I can do, but I'll do everything in my power to help."

All of us know that when your an entertainer of any sort actress of singer or even model the more flawless you are the better. Yes in today's day and age most images of the famous are photo-shopped into looking like the perfect woman but in reality minor flaws are being hidden.

Which to me is not so bad as all woman will tell you we want to look our very best on any picture, but what happens when you loose that flawless image and instead end up with a nasty looking scar that cannot be hidden and thus your entire career and life changes?

Pretty sure you will agree that is a thought no woman famous or not will want to think about. In the new read from the very talented Jules Bennett I as reader was shown the impact such a tragic event can have on a person emotional scarring running much deeper than the actual visible scars, but also that it does not mean you need to give up on all your dreams, as the grass really does look greener on the other side.

The read in short is about Callie she is a wannabe actress who works as receptionist to her look-into-my-eyes-and-I'll-show-you-more-than-one-way-to-do-me-baby, boss Noah. After a tragic turn of events Noah being the best Hollywood plastic surgeon around decides he is the only man fit enough to take on the job of helping Callie recover from her physical and emotional scars, only he does not count on the attraction between them being the one thing he cannot seem to stop himself from acting on.

And right there is where the author showed why her books are simply pure magic as I was taken on a ride of pure romance and blazing red hot passion between two people going from friends to lovers with endless possibilities.

The character of Callie was great as she really was a ray of sunshine and always being positive, she really picked herself up out of the ground so when her life chances for the worst I really felt sorry for her and cried right along with each tear she shed.

The character of Noah was amazing yes ladies no jokes even with his issues of a lost love blocking him from really connecting with Callie he still was a fantastic character as the author showed him as a kind caring man ready for anything that comes his way and ready to fight to protect anything that means the world to him.

The backdrop setting was fun, sexy and light even during moments of conflict there was still the playful side to both Callie and Noah. But it also involved some really heart stopping moments as hospital settings were depicted and I could pick up on the pure heart wrenching pain people with scars of any kind need to go through.

The dialogue was really neat as the author used her words to really bring home the message of the past needs to left in the past in order to move towards a future. The sexual heat of this one was scorching but not in the bordering on erotica way that some books of this genre has given me before but in the classic Jules Bennett way that leaves you with hot sex intertwined with romance of the best kind.

There was also the secondary character Max best friend to Noah that I could pick up is truly an amazing character in the making and I truly hope to see him get his own book soon.

I highly recommend this read for all lovers of romance with true life drama and a message that will stay with you for a long time to come.

Magical work Jules keep them coming!

    Quick HOT read!!
    By LB lady
This is a quick little read packed with a whole lot of drama and romance. Noah Foster is a plastic surgeon who is a sweet caring guy with a whole lot of hurt on the inside. He holds himself responsible for what happened to his fiance. She wanted to be a actress but fell into drugs and overdosed one day and passed away. His guilt eats at him and he can't get past that because he couldn't help her. Callie Matthews works for him in his office as a receptionist and has the same goal to be an actress. She reminds Noah of his fiance because of that dream and because she looks similar and is bubbly and full of life. He's also attracted to her. Trying to protect her he offers her a modeling job for his practice. He figures if he can keep her away from acting gigs he can keep her from following his fiance path to destruction. On the way to the photo shoot Callie gets into a terrible car accident that leaves her with a terrible cut on her face damaging her perfect skin and her chances at a acting career and the money she needs to help support her parents. Noah is torn up again with guilt and confused by his feeling for Callie. He can't risk his heart again if it will only be shattered again but he feels a pull towards her that only strengthens as care for her as she heals . Callie has self esteem issues from her past that rear up and she fights depression and heartache over what she's going to do with her life now if Noah can't fix her. Jules Bennett writes about two broken hearts that need each other to mend and be whole. You can feel the confusion and pull between Noah and Callie. The chemistry between the two is sizzling hot!!

Harriet Hume: A London Fantasy, by Rebecca West

In this modern fairy tale, Rebecca West transports her reader with a tale of the polar opposites of mind and spirit, love and power
Harriet Hume’s unchanging beauty and commitment to her art stand in stark contrast to Arnold Condorex’s more worldly goals. After a romantic tryst, she discovers that she can read his mind, but Arnold, with his sights set on moving up in the world, quickly parts from the mysterious lady. As they encounter each other over the years, Harriet’s intuitive powers continue to unsettle Arnold, opening his eyes to the darker elements of his political and financial aspirations, even as he remains drawn to her. Beautifully drawn and filled with magical touches, West’s fantasy explores innate and learned gender roles, as her characters uncover the mystery surrounding their otherworldly connection.

    Review

“One must conclude that the greatest living example of a woman . . . who has been both a thinker and an artist, and who has managed over some sixty years to express some spacious sense of reality, is Rebecca West.” —Samuel Hynes, The Times Literary Supplement

    About the Author

Dame Rebecca West (1892–1983) is one of the most critically acclaimed English novelists, journalists, and literary critics of the twentieth century. Uniquely wide-ranging in subject matter and breathtakingly intelligent in her ability to take on the oldest and knottiest problems of human relations, West was a thoroughly entertaining public intellectual. In her eleven novels, beginning with The Return of the Soldier, she explored topics including feminism, socialism, love, betrayal, and identity. West’s prolific journalistic works include her coverage of the Nuremberg trials for the New Yorker, published as A Train of Powder, and Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, her epic study of Yugoslavia. She had a son with H.G. Wells, and later married banker Henry Maxwell Andrews, continuing to write, and publish, until she died in London at age ninety.

The central plot is fine but...overly florid and wordy.
    By Phred
I think I was supposed to like this book. I really tried. I do not think I got the point of Ms West's Style.

The plot is fairly straight forward. Harriet Hume is a beautiful professional pianist. Her lover is Arnold Condorex. Arnold is what the English would call a striver. Born into middle class or less, he is determined, At All Costs to be not merely rich and powerful, but accepted by those born to be rich and powerful.

His great skill is as a negotiator (one who finds compromises). Because he chooses his career over Everything including his love for Harriet Hume (she is most often referred to by both names), he will over time compromise every value, marring into wealth not for love, building his career on an ethical compromise and so forth until he compromises one time too often. Ultimatly he finds himself financially ruined, livening in a loveless home, despised by even his man servant.

Harriet will develope magical abilities and will know his every misstep, from leaving her for his career to the final deal that will mean his total destruction. She will reappear in his life at each critical moment and try to warn him. He will always chose to act against her warnings.

    My speculation:

Rebecca West had been a lover to H. G. Wells. He had had a dream, which he made into a short story: A boy who visits a beautiful world by walking through a magical door. The boy would grow to manhood, always looking for the door and always just missing it. He would in death return to this magical door.

This is a story of the road not taken. Harriet Hume is also about the road not taken. In This case, Dame West will focus on the cost of not taking this road and how much you can loose by ignoring how magical life can be.

This book uses a magical/ real world mix not usually associated in English novels. If you like this convention in: By Laura Esquivel: Like Water for Chocolate, you may like it here.

My problem with this book is the rest of the style. It is too florid - almost literally, in that flowers and plants take huge amounts of space - and it is other wise too long. Her two characters make long internal and external speeches. Simple statements are re-engineered to take pages. Too often Dame West envelopes you in fog for who knows why?

Keeping in mind the sub-title, A London Fantasy, It is possible that Harriet Hume may not be a real character. She may have begun as Arnolds' lover and for the rest is a ghost haunting his conscience. She may be some kind of sprite or spirit. Or I may be trying to understand a book whose intent eludes me.

I will read more of Rebecca West's Books. Mostly to see if I `get' any of them; I did not `get' this one.

Direito Ao Processo Qualificado: Processo Civil na Perspectiva do Estado Constitucional (Portuguese Edition), by GUILHERME BOTELHO

The Sound of Your Voice, Only Really Far Away (Secret Language of Girls Book 3), by Frances O'Roark Dowell

Marylin and Kate find that boys can be just as complicated as friendship in this conclusion to the bestselling Secret Language of Girls trilogy, a “quietly perceptive tour de force” (Kirkus Reviews) from the bestselling author of Dovey Coe and The Secret Language of Girls.

Marylin knows that, as a middle school cheerleader, she has certain obligations. She has to smile as she walks down the hall, be friends with the right people, and keep her manicure in tip-top shape. But Marylin is surprised to learn there are also rules about whom she’s allowed to like—and Benjamin, the student body president, is deemed unacceptable. But maybe there is a way to convince the cheerleaders that her interest in Benjamin is for their own good—maybe she’ll pretend that she’s using him to get new cheerleading uniforms!

Kate, of course, finds this ludicrous. She is going to like who she likes, thank you very much. And she just so happens to be spending more time than ever with Matthew Holler. But even a girl who marches to the beat of her own guitar strings can play the wrong notes—and are she and Matthew even playing the same song? She’s just not sure. So when Matthew tells Kate that the school’s Audio Lab needs funding from the student government, she decides to do what she can to help him get it.

But there isn’t enough money to go around, and it soon becomes clear that only one of the two girls can get her way. Ultimately, though, is it even her way? Or are both girls pushing for something they never really wanted in the first place?

    From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-This realistic novel reveals the inner lives of seventh graders negotiating the demands of friends, crushes, and emerging talents. Miriam fights the shallow temptations of popularity, Kate's infatuation with Matthew depletes her sense of self, and Matthew struggles for control of his genuine-but inconsistent-feelings for Kate. The plot hangs loosely on a contest between the cheerleaders and the audio lab for student government funds, but it's the characters who drive the story. They battle their consciences, reflect on the passage of time, and realize that their parents are human beings; they are poignantly bewildered by childhood's retreat. As Kate thinks while pondering the stars one evening, "Life really isn't about fun anymore. It's about bigger things now." The cover will entice children to this breezy story, but the depth of feeling will make them remember it. The third book in the trilogy, The Sound of Your Voice also succeeds on its own.-Denise Ryan, Middlesex Middle School, Darien, CTα(c) Copyright 2013. Review
"She refuses to oversimplify, allowing readers access to the girls’ homes as well as school, making it clear that their inner lives are as complicated as their readers’. Secondary characters, especially the girls’ parents, are likewise given satisfying emotional complexity.... readers leave Kate and Marylin poised between childhood and adulthood—they are not finished, but they are on their way." I like the whole idea of kate trying to figure out who she is, and what she wants to be viewed as, ( or finding her style).... but it's just not very realistic. the writer of the book has to be better equipped with middle schoolers
