But Mr. Trigg reminds Sam to (1) Do her research and (2) Stay objective. And in the process of practicing good journalism, Sam realizes that while John looks and sounds great, he might not actually be the best pick.

Cast Your Ballot! Chapter 1

POLLS A PROVING GROUND FOR RISING STAR REPORTER

It is election season at Cherry Valley Middle School, and I cannot wait to cover it for our school newspaper, the Cherry Valley Voice. Everyone pays attention to the news around election time, so I’m really psyched to be in the middle of it. Plus, it’s good training ground for when I get older and am a star reporter covering the presidential election somewhere (watch for me!). I am obsessed with journalism and have spent years reading posts, blogs, newspapers, and magazines and watching coverage of real elections on TV, and I am ready to get in there and do it myself! I can just see the headline: Polls a Proving Ground for Rising Star Reporter.

Elections have it all: person-on-the-street interviews, polls, background digging, daily highs and lows, analysis—the best stuff journalism has to offer. And what’s great is I’ll get to do it all–and under my own byline, Sam Martone. Oh, along with that of my writing partner and the crush of my life, Michael Lawrence. Michael and I make a good writing team. Luckily, the paper’s faculty supervisor, Mr. Trigg, agrees, so he partners us up for most stories. I have to say, we do make a great pair.

Today Mr. Trigg announced in our newspaper staff meeting that we’d begin election coverage for the next issue. Everyone began whispering with their neighbor (Michael was late, as usual, so I didn’t have a neighbor to whisper with at that exact moment), and Mr. Trigg had to call us all to order again.

“Wonderful enthusiasm here today!” He chuckled. “Nothing like an election to get the journalistic juices flowing! All right, then, let’s talk assignments. Nikil Gupta and Niall Carey, how about a piece on the election process here at Cherry Valley Middle? Let’s focus on: How do people get nominated? How do the campaigns work? Where and how do we vote?”

Mr. Trigg looked at his notes, and just then, Michael entered with a sheepish grin. He nodded at Mr. Trigg apologetically and quickly joined me on the love seat just inside the newsroom door. I always grab this seat early and save him the other half—it’s the best seat for late arrivals, which is what Michael always is. Plus, it is called a love seat, right? Swoon!

“Ah, Mr. Lawrence. So glad you could join us today,” said Mr. Trigg, peering at Michael over his reading glasses. Michael is one of Mr. Trigg’s favorites since he’s an amazing writer and has a photographic memory, so Mr. Trigg lets Michael get away with a lot of other stuff, like lateness. “I’d like you and Ms. Martone to do profiles of the candidates for school president. Front-page stories. Lots of background, person-on-the-street, and primary interviews with the candidates. Okay, you two?”

He looked at us, and we nodded vigorously and smiled. This was a plum assignment. It would be fun to research and write, and we’d get to work together, which wasn’t always a given. I was ecstatic.

“The two candidates are John Scott and . . .” He looked down at his notes. “It’s here somewhere . . . hiding . . . I wouldn’t want to be running against John Scott either! Oh, here it is! Anthony Wright. Okay?”

“Got it,” I said, writing their names down in my trusty notebook even though of course I knew already. I had been reading a lot of posts about who was running, and paying attention for weeks already.

“Good note-taking, Pasty,” whispered Michael.

I nodded, happy enough to ignore his nickname for me for the millionth time, as well as the fact that he always teases me for writing things down in my notebook.

Mr. Trigg continued. “Let us all remember, reporters, that we are impartial. As the press, we merely reflect what the public says, and we strive to be the ultimate in fair and accurate reporting, especially when it comes to elections. Now, opinion pieces are a different matter, but I don’t know that we’ll be using them this time around. Feelings do get hurt,” said Mr. Trigg, rolling his eyes heavenward. “In the words of the late, great Winston Churchill, ‘There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion.’ Too true, dear Winston, too true,” he said, shaking his head sadly.

Everyone giggled, since Mr. Trigg has this unbelievable ability to find the perfect Churchill quotation for anything. Everyone makes bets on how many times Trigger will mention Churchill in a meeting. Some kids even think he makes the quotations up. I always write them down because I like them, so I’m here to say they’re all real because I’ve Googled them! I actually think they’d make a great article one day.

After the meeting Michael and I both had to run to classes, but we made a plan to meet up later and brainstorm.

“Who are you voting for, by the way?” he asked, a twinkle in his eye.

“I am a journalist! I am objective!” I said indignantly. “I won’t know until I have all the facts and can make an informed decision!”

“Innocent until proven guilty, then?” he teased with that adorable smile of his.

“Of course,” I huffed, but I smiled back. How could I not?

At lunch I ate with my best friend, Hailey Jones, and our friends Kristen and Jenna. We are going to the movies this Friday and out for pizza at Slices, and we wanted to talk about which movie to see.

“Action is where it’s at, my friends,” declared Hailey. She wanted us to go see a movie about a spaceship that loses control or something.

“Uh, nothing personal, Hails, but you know that’s not really my bag,” I said.

Hailey rolled her eyes as she took another bite of her usual lunch: white rice with salt and butter (yes, it’s kind of gross, and yes, Hailey’s mother would not be happy if she knew that’s what she ate most days). She said, “You just want to go to one of those old-fashioned Jane Austen novel movies or talky-talky movies you like. I just can’t sit still for that!”

Kristen and Jenna were used to Hailey’s and my battling over details, but everyone knows that underneath it all we’re best friends.

“Well, I have to be true to myself,” I said, all fake righteous.

“So do I! I just want to kick back, relax, and get scared!”

Everyone laughed, as Hailey had intended, and she smiled a lopsided grin. I didn’t want to propose a vote because I knew Jenna and Kristen wanted to see the same movie about old-fashioned times that I did, and it wouldn’t be fair to gang up on Hailey. We’d just have to let the movie times decide what we saw and never mind accounting for people’s interests.

“Oh, and by the way, there will be way more cute boys at my movie than yours!” said Hailey in one last attempt.

“Hmm. You have a point,” I had to admit. “But any cute boys in particular?” These three girls all know about my huge crush on Michael.

Hailey’s eyes twinkled. “We could invite him!”

“No. It’s a girls’ night,” I said firmly. We’d been planning on this date for weeks. Not that I would really have the nerve to invite him anyway. Or maybe I would. Would that be weird? I realized they were all looking at me. “Anyway, I’m not going to base my activities on Michael Lawrence’s interests!” I declared.

“Famous last words!” Hailey laughed.

“Humph,” I said. “Let’s change the subject. What do you all know about the candidates for school president?”

“Ooh, John Scott is sooo cute!” said Jenna.

“Majorly,” agreed Kristen.

“Hails?” I asked.

“He’s cute, I guess. But I didn’t know we were voting on looks alone,” she said.

“That’s my girl!” I cheered. “Good answer!”

“Not that I know anything about the other guy,” she said.

“Who is the other guy?” asked Kristen.

“Anthony Wright,” I said, shrugging a little.

“No, but who is he?” asked Jenna.

“Yeah, I know what you mean,” I agreed. “Pretty low on the radar.”

“Like, invisible.” Kristen nodded.

“I’ve got to write profiles on both of them for the next issue of the Voice, so I’ll know a lot more very soon,” I said.

“Need an assistant for the Scott interview?” joked Jenna.

“I already have one!” I declared. And, spotting Michael across the cafeteria, I said, “And he’s right there!”

“Old lover boy himself,” teased Hailey.

Here are some of the reasons I love Michael: He is tall and in very good shape from being on the football and baseball teams. He has dark hair with bright blue eyes, which is a great combo, and dimples. He is a good dresser—lots of flannel shirts and khakis—but it’s not just the way he looks. He also has nice manners, and he’s an excellent writer and a talented cook.

Michael and I mostly get along very well, but we sometimes fight, and I hate that. I wan...

How to Love, by Katie Cotugno

For fans of Sarah Dessen and John Green, this is a breathtaking debut about a couple who fall in love...twice.

Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember. But he's never noticed that Reena even exists...until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. Then Sawyer disappears without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there's a new love in Reena's life: her daughter. Reena's gotten used to life without Sawyer, but just as suddenly as he disappeared, he turns up again. Reena wants nothing to do with him, though she'd be lying if she said his being back wasn't stirring something in her.

After everything that's happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

Amazon.com Review
The Official How to Love Playlist By Katie Cotugno

From Joni Mitchell to Leann Rimes to Te Vaka, I listened to all of it while I wrote this book. Songs that fit the story, songs I thought Sawyer and Reena might like, songs that just plain gave me a lot of Big Feelings. Here are a few that are still in heavy rotation:

1. “Down in the Valley” by the Head and the Heart

Live music plays such an important role in How to Love, and the Head and the Heart puts on maybe the best live show I’ve ever seen. This track in particular is such a Sawyer song to me.

2. “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” by Bob Dylan, performed by Miley Cyrus

This is a Bob Dylan song, but I have to say that Miley’s version is my very fave. “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome” is a song about knowing you’re going to get left behind and not being able to do a single thing to stop it.

3. “So Far Around the Bend” by the National

I mean, if “I know you’re a serious lady” isn’t a perfect description of Reena, I don’t know what is.

4. “I Dream of Chicago” by Parlours

This one’s a traveling song, and a beautiful one.

5. “Reunion” by Indigo Girls

“Reunion” always makes me think of Reena’s relationship with her family—both the Monteros and the LeGrandes—especially the lines “I have no need for anger with intimate strangers/I have nothing to hide.”

6. “Poison and Wine” by the Civil Wars

This one’s about a good/bad love affair, and it aches.

7. “Bring It on Home to Me” by Sam Cooke, performed by Tony Lucca

This song is actually mentioned by name in the book. It’s a Sam Cooke song, but the Tony Lucca cover is the sexiest. It’s just science.

8. “All This and Heaven Too” by Florence and the Machine

In my head, “All This and Heaven Too” is Reena’s theme song. To me, at least, it’s about a smart girl trying to figure out, you know—how to love.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up–Sawyer LaGrande's unexplained disappearance rocked Serena Montero's world. It was love at first sight, and then he ran away and left her pregnant. Now he's back in town and ready to pick up where they left off. Serena, however, has a steady boyfriend and is now the mother of a two-year-old. She had to repair her broken heart and make peace with her very Catholic father, who does not approve of her out-of-wedlock child. She is older and wiser, but Sawyer was the love of her life. Will she make the same mistake twice? The language and content of this novel will appeal to teens, but the structure is an issue. Every other chapter is a flashback, making the plot seem choppy and disjointed. The portrayal of a Catholic Hispanic family in modern-day Florida is refreshing, but the shuffling between the present and the past may make it hard for readers to lose themselves in the characters. The story's mood is rather depressing; Serena deals with the death of her mother, the death of her best friend, Sawyer's abandonment, her child, her family's disapproval, and her father's heart attack. Yet, despite her struggles, she is still able to find her silver lining at the end of the story. How to Love may not appeal to a wide audience, but patrons who read and enjoyed Jamie McGuire's Beautiful Disaster (S & S, 2012) will find Sawyer and Serena's frustrating relationship familiar.–Jeni Tahaney, Duncanville High School Library, TXα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
The before: responsible 16-year-old Reena pushes to graduate from high school early so that she can get the hell out of Florida and attend Northwestern. But Sawyer LeGrande, a boy who has been in Reena’s life forever—and who she has loved forever—finally notices her. After a few months of dating, troubled Sawyer disappears and Reena discovers she is pregnant. The after: Sawyer returns after several years away, and it turns out he still stirs something in Reena that can’t be ignored. The “Before” and “After” chapters alternate and can be summed up by the following: “I didn’t understand what I had with Sawyer: I couldn’t figure out how he could make me so happy and so miserable all at once.” Cotugno’s debut ambitiously, and intriguingly, follows a couple who fall in love twice, over two different time periods. But Sawyer and Reena don’t appear to change much, and their constant arguing may leave readers wondering why—other than a clear physical attraction and a shared daughter—the past appears to be repeating itself. Still, the compelling voices of the characters and strong writing should carry readers along. Grades 9-12. --Ann Kelley

What is wrong with this girl?
By Mckelle George
I agree with another reviewer that although How to Love has some pretty decent writing, and the formatting of the "before and after" helps move the story along at a weaving, pleasant pace . . . The main character, Reena, becomes increasingly unlikable the longer the book goes on. Sawyer is a terrible boyfriend--a terrible person, in fact--in so many ways. Reena seems in lust with him, infatuated with this this inexplicable appeal that comes off very bad-boy Twilight-y, nothing more. Sawyer makes many mistakes, as does Reena, but there are no redeemable qualities to counteract this. Reena herself is exhausting and whiny. If the girl had actually learned something from all the heartache she went through, perhaps acknowledged and grew from some of her flaws, my review might be different, but as it was, both protagonists were so incessantly unlikable I couldn't put up with the book anymore. It was too unbelievable that she wouldn't walk away from him.

Too bad. I like Cotugno, and her writing. But even an angsty romance should be one you want to root for, but I was rooting for her to kick Sawyer to the curb the whole time.

Ruined by an unhealthy romance that never got better
By Ashley Evans
How to Love could have easily been a 4--or maybe even 5--star book, but there was one massive problem: Sawyer. Sawyer literally stole those stars one by one. POOF! GONE! He just chipped away at them every time he pulled a jerk move that made me want to pummel his face in with rocks.

How to Love started out pretty strong for me. I had kind of a morbid interest in it, very similar to My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi. Teenage pregnancy? I was curious. I wanted all the details; I wanted to know exactly how/when/why it happened. But FYI, they never actually tell us how she got pregnant. NEVER. That's what I wanted to know. We don't know when it happened, or if they used a condom or not. All we know is that she woke up with morning sickness one day.

At first, I could really relate to Reena. She was the girl who loved quiet summers playing card games and hanging out with her best friend. But all around her, people were "moving on". She lost her best friend to the drinking and partying scene. I could totally relate. Reena just wanted things to be the way they always were; she didn't want things to change. She wasn't interested in partying or any of that.

"I wasn't shy, exactly. That's never what it was. I just didn't know how to do this, is all, the clang and chatter of high school."
"I had no friends in tenth grade. Okay, that's dramatic. I had friends. I didn't eat lunch alone on a toilet seat or anything. Mostly, I just didn't eat lunch. I went to the library."

THAT WAS ME!!! I could totally relate.

But everything went to the dogs as soon as Sawyer stepped on the scene...

I feel like we were supposed to love Sawyer despite his faults. He was supposed to be the "bad boy" in high school who made mistakes, but then comes back and redeems himself. But I felt like I never had a reason to like Sawyer or forgive him, but I had so many reasons to hate him. Sawyer was not a nice guy. He was constantly drunk, on drugs, flirting with other girls, and dragging Reena to parties. Reena obviously hated parties, but she went along with him. And while he was out popping pills and getting drunk and hitting it up with other girls, she was hiding out in the kitchen desperately wanting to go home. EVERY TIME.

"We'll just stop by for a minute," he always said before we got there, but in the end a minute usually took an hour or more.

"I didn't want to, was the problem, and so I sat on the counter in any number of kitchens, drinking warm bear out of a red plastic cup and watching the minutes go by on the digital clock on the microwave, hoping no one said anything to me as they moved through the room, and wishing I was home watching reruns with Soledad. [..] Once, I brought a book and hid in the pantry to read it."

But you know what? She always gave in. She always continued to go with him, even if she really didn't want to, and hid in pantries when she got there. So I slowly started to lose sympathy for her. How can I sympathize with a girl who puts herself through this? She could have told Sawyer she didn't want to go. She could have dumped his pathetic, druggie butt. But no, she didn't. She complains and fights with him, but she never breaks up with him. WHY??? As far as I saw, he had exactly zero redeeming qualities. He never had "nice" or "sweet" moments. He was always a royal jerk.

** MINOR SPOILER **
And when Reena got accepted into college, Sawyer wanted to take her out on a nice date to celebrate... But guess what... he said they had to make "a little stop" on the way.. SO HE COULD MEET WITH HIS DRUG DEALER!! And he freaking brought her along. What a jerk move. Who does that?
** END MINOR SPOILER **

And in an "after" chapter, when Reena finally confronted Sawyer for leaving her without even saying goodbye, guess what he said? He actually had the balls to try to pin it on her.

"You know, what I love about all this is how conveniently you forgot that you were on your way out, too, when I left. You told me every day."

He's basically saying it's okay that he left her, because she was planning on leaving anyway... TO GO TO COLLEGE!!! That does not give him the right to just walk out without even saying goodbye.

Long story short, Sawyer was a huge huge huge jerk, and he never did anything to make me like him. He never did nice things for Reena, he never had sweet moments. He was always high out of his mind or drunk or having sex with her. This is going to sound so "disapproving parent" of me, but he was a bad influence. He was encouraging her to do drugs and skip class. And I know some teenagers are like that, but the key thing here is that Reena didn't want to do those things, and yet he kept pressuring her to. There was never a reason for Reena to like him.. she just did. It was pure lust, as far as I'm concerned. And on top of that, she had a great guy in the "after" chapters, but she ditched him to go running back to Sawyer. Why???

As Sawyer became more and more of a jerk, he knocked stars off my rating. As Reena kept running back to him, I lost sympathy for her. At first I felt bad for her because Sawyer ran out on her... but now... honestly.... she kind of had it coming. She stayed with this guy when he was nothing but disrespectful to her. He was always a flaky boyfriend, so it's no surprising that he just up and left one day.

I feel like How to Love has all the makings of a really good book. It's well written, I like the alternating "before" and "after" chapters, and it's an interesting story. But it is completely ruined by Sawyer. He was a horrible character and slowly made me detest the book. And since Reena kept running back to him, I started to detest her as well. She also had this really annoying habit of raging at Sawyer for being a jerk, and then when he'd say "What's wrong? Are you mad?" she'd lie and say nothing was wrong. So he'd be out flirting with other girls, she'd start acting b**chy towards him, he'd ask what the problem was, and she'd say NOTHING. She just let everything go and never stood up for herself.

If, somehow, you don't detest Sawyer, then I think it's really easy to love this book. But if you get as annoyed with his horrible jerkyness as I did, then it's kind of a book-ruiner. The problem is that How to Love is ALL about the romance and loving and all that, but when you have a horrible love interest, that just makes the book painful to read.

Parents beware!
By muddyboy1
Is this book well written? - Yes! Did the book keep my interest? - Absolutely! Did I like the books message? It is horrible! The title of the book should be changed into How to be infatuated with a boy and make bad decisions that will ruin your life? I would never want a teenage daughter on mine reading this book. The story is about a 16 year old girl with straight A's ready to go to Northwestern University who falls under the spell of a drug using member of a rock band. She gets pregnant and time and again she gets opportunities to make good decisions. I keep rooting for her. This was what kept my interest. Spoiler alert - don't read the next sentence! I kept hoping that she would see this guy as a manipulative jerk but she never does. There should be a sequel in which he leaves her with three kids and she realizes that this isn't How to Love it is How to Ruin Your Life!

Amazon.com Review
“Real or Fiction? Things I Didn’t Make Up” by Sean Williams

You’d think a novel about teleporters (a.k.a. “d-mat”) would be totally sci-fi, but it’s not, I swear. Just about everything in this book either exists right now or is right around the corner. For instance:

1. Put “teleportation” into Google, and you’ll find hundreds of links to real science experiments showing that in principle it’s possible. The only thing separating us from d-mat is engineering. (Truly a humungous amount of engineering, but we’ll get there. Trust me.)

2. One of the truly cool spin-offs of d-mat is fabbing—taking a pattern of something that’s gone through d-mat and re-creating it from that pattern over and over again. This might sound amazing, but again it’s not fundamentally different from 3D printing, which we have right now.

3. Then there are Clair’s lenses. Contact lenses that work like miniature TVs or telescopes exist today. With a built-in gestural interface, this could give us a Google Glass that works. From there it’s just a short step to using the equivalent of Facebook “likes” to change the world.

4. What else? Oh yeah, the Skylifter. There’s a company that makes UFO-shaped blimps for cranes, cargo lifters, even palatial passenger transport. I want one. (Hint hint, if anyone from Skylifter is reading.) Then there’s beaming concentrated solar power down to Earth from satellites in space, reading speech directly from the mind, having one time zone for the entire planet, and surveillance drones—all things that are entirely possible, if not happening right now.

6. Not all the news is good, of course: the Water Wars are obviously one downside of the impending eco-apocalypse, along with higher sea levels and flooded cities. But there really are schemes to relocate endangered species to environments far from where they evolved. Elephants in Australia could happen one day.

7. Lastly, one of my favorite things in Twinmaker is the Sphinx Observatory, with its Ice Palace and an elevator that goes up the heart of a mountain. It sounds too cool to be true, but I assure you it isn’t. Look it up and marvel, as I often do, at the beauty of all things science.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Best-selling sf author Williams borrows elements of the world he created for his adult novel The Resurrected Man (2005) in his YA debut. Thanks to D-mat technology, teen Clair can jump around the globe in a matter of minutes simply by entering a booth. Along with her best friend Libby’s boyfriend, with whom she shares an attraction, Clair is trying to join an elite party crew by using D-mat’s Lucky Jump feature. They initially dismiss Improvement, a way to transform yourself through a series of jumps, but then Libby uses Improvement to remove her prominent birthmark, and as the disturbing consequences roll out, Clair digs for answers, along with a cult that believes D-mat steals souls—and much more. Williams is adept at weaving together the disparate story strands: the sociopolitical implications of a giant corporation that has access to the very code to your being, and the frantic lives of teens caught in the middle of a devastating conspiracy. In the masterful hands of Williams, the technology, which has eerie parallels to contemporary life, provides a solid platform for great storytelling, and teens will revel in the drama, Clair’s tenacity, and the memorable characters who discover that their utopia isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Readers looking for another strong Katniss-type character to follow through a treacherous near-future will hope for a sequel. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: New York Times best-selling author Williams’ plunge into YA is big news, and a full-scale, multiplatform marketing campaign is ensuring that the word gets out. Grades 9-12. --Erin Downey Howerton

“In the masterful hands of Williams, the technology, which has eerie parallels to contemporary life, provides a solid platform for great storytelling, and teens will revel in the drama, Clair’s tenacity, and the memorable characters who discover that their utopia isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.” (Booklist (starred review))

“The dangers, casualties and well-written action scenes keep tensions high. Williams marries accessibly explored moral ramifications of future technologies-a hallmark of mature science fiction-with a strong, capable teen heroine and heart-pounding action.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Compelling...handily juggles ethical debates, swift action, and a well-developed setting.” (The Horn Book)

“Williams spins a sprawling and complex tale, built on an impressively well-constructed premise and held together with intrigue and tension.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Give this one to teens who enjoy action-packed books such as Veronica Roth’s “Divergent” trilogy” (School Library Journal)

“Fast-paced” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

“TWINMAKER took my breath away. A triumph of thrilling action and vivid imagination.” (Alison Goodman, author of EON and EONA)

“A mind-blowing adventure about what it means to be human, and what it means to find ourselves.” (Scott Westerfeld, author of UGLIES and LEVIATHAN)

“A gripping YA thriller, coming of age and love story that transports the reader to a future that looks a whole lot better than it really is ... Highly Recommended.” (Garth Nix, author of the Old Kingdom series)

“TWINMAKER asks smart questions without easy answers, and presents a future so simultaneously wonderful and terrible you can only believe in it. A thrilling, existential head trip worthy of my favorite anime, I couldn’t stop reading this book. More importantly, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.” (Alaya Dawn Johnson, author of THE SUMMER PRINCE)

“Twinmaker is a gripping scifi story of friendship, identity + accidentally destroying the universe.” (Amie Kaufman, New York Times bestselling author of These Broken Stars and Illuminae)

Cool concept, great execution!
By Evie Seo
Teleportation, cloning, body snatchers, government conspiracies and themes of identity and self image - Sean Williams explores all that and more in his first YA novel, Twinmaker. It's a great, intellectually stimulating Science Fiction thriller, and one that is sure to appeal to teens and adults alike.

Twinmaker offers an action-packed, dramatic and twisty ride. With every page turned, you learn something new - often disturbing or shocking - about the world and the technology that rules it. And you get really curious. You want to get down to the bottom of it all and find out what's really going on here. You begin to question characters and their motives, second guess them and wonder who is really the "bad guy" here. It's an addictive and absorbing read for sure and, while at times the pacing was a little bit too slow for me, I did enjoy it a lot. Especially the thorough and complex worldbuilding, the fascinating technology and all the awesome scientific details. All Sci Fi fans will love this one for sure!

At the same time, while I loved all the Science Fiction elements, I did not connect with any of the characters. I'm not sure why. They were well fleshed out and they all had distinct personalities, but I just couldn't relate to any of them. I felt indifferent towards them and didn't really care what would happen to them in the end. I was more interested in the conspiracy surrounding the advanced technology and the mystery behind it, than I was in the fates of the people involved in this story.

I really liked the idea of being able to travel to any place in the world in a blink of an eye. It was such a cool and sweet concept, and yet considering how things could (and did) easily go wrong, it was also quite a scary one! Just think about the possibilities, though! No more air or ground travel, no more pollution, so many problems solved just like that! You could hang out with your friends who live on the other side of the planet, and you could do it as often as you wanted, without wasting time on travelling or paying a penny to get there! But that's not even all of it! D-mats (the teleportation devices), can do so much more than just teleport you to a different location. The fabbers can recognize patterns of things and then re-create them, you can order food, clothing.. and just about anything else you need (as long as it's not a living thing - it's the only rule), and you'll get it within minutes, seconds even!

But every great technological improvement comes with its risks and possible consequences. D-mat is not perfect. There are people out there who want to use it to their own advantage, and those people don't care about every-day users. There are glitches in the system that can cause permanent damage to your body and brain, even death. They promise improvement, but what they really do is steal your soul and your body. What price are you willing to pay for being smarter, prettier, braver, faster, more skilled in something? Twinmaker invites you to think about technology and how it affects our lives. It's a "food for thought" kind of book, but also just a really well-written futuristic thriller.

Overall, I had a lot of fun reading Twinmaker and will definitely be reading the sequel when it comes out. The ending was simply mind-blowing, I can't wait to find out what happens next! I recommend this book to those of you who enjoy well-thought-out, complex plot lines full of fascinating ideas and thrilling developments. You'll love how intelligent and deftly plotted this book is!

Hmm
By Amazon Customer
Well, I like the concept of this book, but it was filled to the brim with boring passages that couldn't capture me. After the halfway mark, I had to skip everything but dialogue and a couple of necessary paragraphs so I could finish as soon as possible. The book idea is good, and the characters are developed, but it was a bit too wordy for me.

Very interesting story despite some confusing technology
By Christine
Actual Rating: 3.5 Stars

TWINMAKER is a futuristic sci-fi thriller that captures readers' attentions from the very first page. In this day and age you can travel anywhere you want through a "d-mat." It breaks apart your data and reassembles you somewhere else. After a friend decides to use this technology to request an improvement to her facial features, Clair's world turns upside down. Libby no longer is herself and Clair has found out the true dangers of this Improvement. It's now up to her and a couple of skeptics of the whole d-mat thing to enlighten the world on what can happen if you use this machine too much and for the wrong reasons. It's action-packed and Clair's adventure becomes more and more terrifying. Improvement isn't just about changing your appearance anymore, someone is out to take over the minds of bodies and replicate them all over the world for their benefit.

Yeah, I'll be the first to admit that this book was really confusing at the beginning. We're thrown into all this complicated technology and the explanations for them are not the most helpful. I tried to envision how d-mat and these lenses that everyone wears worked. The lenses basically connect you to the internet and allow you to make calls and such. It was only after a couple of chapters in and getting to witness Clair using these things that I could start to understand them. Even after finishing the book, I still really can't tell you how these work but I do have enough of an idea that I could follow along with the story. As more and more revelations about the world in which Clair lives in came to light, the more over my head d-mat was. But! Not fully understanding the ins and out of this technology did not end up taking away from the story. I still really enjoyed reading this.

We are instantly sucked into this exciting world where one simple sentence can transfer you to any part of the world that you can imagine. You obviously get a good grasp on the appeal of this machine and its capabilities. Slowly but surely, though, we start to see what could go wrong, and just how wrong it can get. The plot was immediately enticing and had me eager to read more. I really flew through this book. Each new chapter brought some exciting and thrilling drama that I had to see played out. The action gets amped up about halfway through and keeps you constantly on your toes.

Jesse and Clair were both very interesting characters. Jesse grew up in a home were d-mats were not allowed. His father calls people like Clair, who do use the d-mats, "zombies." You can tell that their interests are on a completely different spectrum. Their dynamic together was perfect and I loved seeing their "friendship" go from two people very wary of each other to two people who realized they couldn't be fighting this problem without the other. The other characters, however, were never exactly developed. If one of them died, I didn't necessarily feel anything. But the two most important characters to the story were developed well!

Overall, I think that despite the couple of issues I had with the technology specifics and the secondary characters, TWINMAKER was a thrilling and enjoyable read. The ending happened fast and left me sort of confused but I hear there is going to be a sequel. I'm hoping that the questions I was left with at the ending will be answered in book #2. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.

many topics covered
By W Boudville
Hsu gives you a wide spread of topics. The book certainly has an impressive coverage. It talks about most types of digital modulation techniques, like Pulse Code Modulation. Plus, there is an explanation of random processes and simple probability. Necessary because of the inherent stochastic nature of much of communications. Which then leads directly into information theory, and the key Shannon concepts of how to find a quantitative measure of information in a channel with a given signal power and noise power.

Understand, though, that the very breadth of the discussion means that Hsu often only has time for a brief venture into each topic. But, then again, the book's title does say "Outline". This is really a review book, rather than a text from which to learn material for the first time.

Broad overview of communications topics
By calvinnme
This is an excellent supplement for upper level undergraduate electrical engineering students enrolled in a communications class, particularly if either "Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems" by Lathi or "Communication Systems Engineering" by Proakis is being used as the main textbook. This outline follows along with the topics in those books particularly well. The first two chapters go into the basics of signals and systems and discuss linearity, time invariance, impulse response, and the Fourier and Hilbert transforms. The next two chapters discuss the principles of amplitude and frequency modulation. The next four chapters cover the idea of random processes from the standpoint of communication theory. First the concepts of probability and random variables are introduced. Then random processes themselves are outlined. Finally these concepts are applied in chapters on noise in communication and hypothesis testing. I think this section of the outline does a particularly good job of presenting material and worked problems on possibly one of the hardest topics to understand in electrical engineering undergraduate studies. The final two chapters of the outline cover the basics of information theory and error control coding.

The depth of material presented is not sufficient for self-study, but is very good supplemental material. The problems are excellent with many worked out examples, and there are more than enough illustrations and figures to help explain the subject. I highly recommend this outline.

A good course supplement text.
By R. D. Starwalt
A concise and useful analysis approach on the subject. It is intended for a junior or higher level college audience. I used this for more technical details while taking an engineering technology course on communications.

The eleventh Lost Diary detailing Columbus’ first voyage across the Atlantic and his historic landing in the ‘New World’. As told by Luc Landahoya who tries to work out where he’s going.

The diary tells the story within a 12-month span from Spring 1492 when Columbus got the official go-ahead from Ferdinand and Isabella, to the Spring of 1493 when he returned in triumph following his ‘discovery’ of the New World.
Life aboard ship, New World discoveries that still survive today tobacco, hammocks, barbecues, canoes, maize etc. The power of the ‘press’ – printed accounts of Colubus’ triumphs spread fast and coming at the end of the 15th Century, the 1492 voyage was part of a significant turning point in european and world history. There are plenty of good-natured laughs in this story – Columbus was convinced he was sailing to China and Japan. He was also convinced he was travelling to a land of untold riches but took along cheap glass beads of worthless trinkets and glass beads as gifts.

It’s New Year’s Eve, and for the three Peterson sisters, that means their family’s huge bash. Their house is the perfect place for a party—if you don’t mind the drive. That’s because the Petersons live way out at the edge of town, where there are no other houses for miles…except for the old one next door that’s been abandoned for as long as anyone can remember. The Peterson girls have seen strange things going on at that house over years, but they’ve always been able to dismiss them. Until now. This New Year’s Eve, the mysteries hidden in the house want to be discovered. And they won’t be ignored any longer…

The House Next Door

CHAPTER 1
December 31st

“I’m glad it will be dark by the time our guests arrive,” Alyssa Peterson remarked to her sister and mom as they drove down their quiet, one-lane street. “That way nobody will have to see that house.”

“It looks creepier than usual today,” Amanda replied. “At least in the summer it’s hidden behind the trees.”

“I wish the town would just tear it down once and for all,” Mrs. Peterson agreed as she turned to pull into their driveway, kicking up dust in their trail. Their last-minute trip to the grocery store for a few missing party items had resulted in bags and bags of must-have snacks. She gently leaned on the horn. A second later her youngest daughter, Anne, bounded out of the house to help unload the car.

The girls were almost finished bringing the bags inside when Alyssa motioned for her two younger sisters to huddle around her.

“Everyone at the party tonight will probably want to hear stories about the house next door, but let’s try not talk about it,” she began. “This is going to be our biggest and best New Year’s Eve party yet, and for once I’d like the party to be about us and not that thing next door. Agreed?”

As if on cue, all three sisters turned and stared at the house. The house was something they avoided as much as possible. Its facade was in shambles—glass was cracked on some of the windows, shingles often blew off the roof, and paint was stripped from the wooden boards that loosely held the house together—but they had heard the inside was even more decayed. None of the Petersons had actually been inside the house, but according to town gossip, floorboards were rotting away, doors were hanging loosely on rusty hinges, and some of the electrical wiring was dangerously exposed. Judging on the condition of the lawn, it was easy to believe the rumors. An old-fashioned wheelbarrow was overturned and corroded with rust on the dead grass. And a broken light post that stood near the wheelbarrow sometimes flicked and buzzed with a surge of electricity.

The sisters turned back and looked at one another.

“Agreed!” Amanda and Anne said in unison.

“It’s almost time, Amanda!” Mrs. Peterson called up the stairs to the second floor. Amanda quickly glanced at the clock on her nightstand and frowned. Her guests would start arriving soon, and she wasn’t close to being ready for her family’s annual New Year’s Eve party. She swiped a tiny brush across her fingernail, adding a final coat of dark berry-red polish.

“Be right down!” Amanda replied. She lightly blew on her fingernails—trying to dry them as quickly as possible—as she walked over to the mirror hanging on the back of her bedroom door for one final chance to examine her outfit before joining her sisters downstairs. The corner of her mouth tilted slightly upward as she admired her new skirt in the reflection. It was a Christmas present from her younger sister, Anne, and to her surprise, she loved the soft pink color. She twirled around and the skirt’s light, airy fabric billowed around her. Smoothing down the ruffles, she looked herself over from head to toe, from the slightly darker pink shirt to the white ballet slippers. All right, she thought, maybe I’ve gone a little too girly. She slipped out of her shoes and tugged on her favorite pair of silver-metallic high-top sneakers. As she tied the laces, she started thinking about Paul Furby, hoping that he would finally notice her this year.

“Amanda, we need you downstairs now!” Mrs. Peterson called again.

Amanda swung the door open and stepped into the hallway just as raindrops began pattering on the roof. She ran back into her room and peered out the window. Thick, dark clouds hung heavily over their house. She leaned closer into the window until she could see down to the porch below. After lots and lots of begging by the three sisters, their parents had finally agreed that this year the adults would stay upstairs while the girls would be allowed to host their own party in the basement. It would be guys and girls until midnight, and then the boys would leave. The girls would stay for a sleepover and Mr. Peterson’s famous New Year’s Day breakfast. Strictly no adults allowed. And the sisters were hoping the mild southern Texas weather would hold throughout the night so they could mingle outside on the porch too. But as Amanda saw the rain streaking down her window, she wondered if they were doomed. She hoped this bit of rain would pass soon.

Slowly, her gaze swept across the wildflower fields and toward the creepy old neighboring house. She could barely even make out its silhouette in the dark night, but her thoughts raced to a memory she’d rather forget.

Months earlier, Amanda had been throwing a softball back and forth with Anne, breaking in her new catcher’s mitt. Amanda was always far more athletic than her sisters, so when she tossed the ball to Anne, she didn’t expect her sister to hurl it back so forcefully. It went straight over Amanda’s head and way past their lawn. After scouring the meadow for the lost ball, Amanda finally found it, and she turned to tell Anne. But when she reached down to pick it up, the ball had disappeared again. Amanda walked a little farther and still couldn’t find it. As she walked on, she saw the ball roll out of the tall weeds and into the lifeless yard of the abandoned house—as if something or someone was using the ball to lure her closer to it. When Amanda finally snatched the ball up, she was right next to the house, nearer than she’d ever been. She heard whispers coming from inside. She wasn’t sure, but it sounded like they were saying “stay away.” She ran back to Anne and told her that she was done playing catch and wanted to go back inside.

The thought of that day still made Amanda uncomfortable. She sighed and decided it was finally time to join her sisters before her mom called her again.

Amanda flew down the stairs. She stopped abruptly when she reached the dining room, blinking her eyes in disbelief. Her parents had transformed their country-style home into a glamorous nightclub. While they were at the grocery store, Mr. Peterson must have swapped the large shabby-chic wooden dining-room table, where the family ate dinner together every night, with three tall glass-and-chrome tables. Amanda ran her finger along the smooth glass as she walked past each table. Her eyes feasted on plates piled high with fresh shrimp and cocktail sauce, sushi, spring rolls, and seven different kinds of dip surrounded by veggies and crackers. There was even a chocolate fountain for dipping fruit and pieces of cake, and a large crystal bowl filled with frothy, pink punch. The Petersons’ New Year’s Eve party had never been so elaborate.

Ten years earlier, when the Petersons first moved to Glory, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Peterson had invited a few of their coworkers over to clink glasses at midnight. Every year, as they made more friends, more guests were invited and the party had gotten increasingly impressive. Amanda had never seen her home as luxuriously decorated as it was tonight. This year, it seemed like all of Glory had been invited, and that made them the most famous family in town—at least for tonight.

Then, all of a sudden, the lights went dim. Amanda spun around and watched as speckles of light began to dance on the walls. She looked up to see a giant mirrored disco ball slowly turning above her.

“What do you think?” Anne asked.

The corner of Amanda’s mouth lifted and she nodded. “Amazing!”

“Let’s grab the snacks,” Anne suggested. “Mom’s just about finished.”

Amanda followed her younger sister into the kitchen, where Mrs. Peterson was standing at the counter dipping large, red strawberries into a bowl filled with dark chocolate. She was wearing a bright red dress and black, shiny patent-leather heels. She also wore the earrings Mr. Peterson had hidden in her Christmas stocking. The earrings sparkled in the light. Amanda couldn’t help but think her mom looked glamorous, even though she was wearing her old stained apron over her party dress.

Mrs. Peterson glanced at Amanda and grinned. “You look beautiful, Amanda! I knew we could get you out of those old jeans.”

“I told Alyssa you’d like my present,” Anne said, looking very smug while sitting on a stool at the counter next to their mom. “She said you wouldn’t be seen in public wearing it because it’s a skirt.”

“I do like it.” Amanda smiled at her sister. “Are these for us, Mom?” Amanda asked, walking over to a large plate filled with the delicious chocolate-covered strawberries.

“I made them especially for you,” Mrs. Peterson said, knowing her middle daughter loved the secret ingredient—a pinch of sea salt in the dark chocolate. The sweet-salty combo was Amanda’s favorite indulgence.

“Thanks, Mom,” Amanda replied. She grabbed the plate and headed for the basement stairs. Anne wrinkled her nose at the passing strawberries, never really caring much for any kind of fruit—even those covered in chocolate. She hopped off the stool, grabbed a few bottles of soda, and was quickly on Amanda’s heels. Mrs. Peterson chuckled and shook her head. Even though her three girls were close in age, they were very different from one another.

Alyssa was twelve; Amanda was eleven; and Anne was ten. It was a family tradition for everyone in the Peterson family to have a first name that started with A. The girls always told their friends it was easy to remember who was oldest because their names lined up in alphabetical order: Alyssa, Amanda, then Anne. Being the oldest, Alyssa was known as the responsible one. Not only was she a straight-A student and on the honor roll, she was also the treasurer of her seventh-grade class and secretary of the Environmental Club. Amanda was in sixth grade and loved to play sports, especially in the warm Texas sun, and was already cocaptain of the varsity volleyball squad. And Anne, the youngest and in fifth grade, was a social butterfly—spunky, fun-loving, and always up for a dare! But as different as they were, they were as close as sisters could be. Also with Anne’s recent growth spurt—that added two inches to her height—the girls often overheard people saying that they could pass for triplets.

Amanda entered the basement with Anne close behind her, and she carefully placed the overflowing plate of strawberries next to the rest of the snacks on the coffee table.

“Where have you been?” Alyssa asked. “I’ve been waiting for you both to help me.” She was teetering on a chair, trying to center a gold-and-silver HAPPY NEW YEAR! banner on the wall above the sliding glass doors in the basement. She glanced at her sisters and nearly fell off the chair. She knew Anne couldn’t wait to wear her new dress, but she was surprised to see how grown-up her little sister looked in it! Anne spun in a circle and the cream-colored dress twirled around her. Her eyes twinkled just as brightly as the rhinestones on her black velvet belt. She even added a swipe of lip gloss that matched her cheerful poppy-colored cardigan and flats.

Alyssa was equally surprised to see Amanda—one of the biggest tomboys she knew—wearing a skirt! She was about to say something when a small wobble from the chair snapped her attention back to balancing on it.

“Is this centered?” Alyssa asked, still holding the banner.

Anne stepped back to get a better look, and crossed her arms. “A little to the left,” she directed. Alyssa adjusted the banner.

“No, too much! Now an inch down,” Anne said.

Alyssa sighed. Her arms ached from holding up the sign. “There!” she declared, putting a thumbtack into it. Crooked or too low, the banner was hung. She leaped off the chair as graceful as a cat—a sure sign of the many years she had spent in the ballet studio.

Alyssa eyed the clock and walked over to a small table to pick up the list she created days earlier. Studying it, she frowned. “Okay, guys, we’re now officially running late,” she told her sisters. “It’s seven twenty, and our guests will start to arrive in about ten minutes.” She quickly scanned the goodies on the snack table. “Anne, run upstairs and grab the sparkling cider and plastic champagne flutes. We’ll need them to make a toast at midnight.”

Alyssa then walked back over to the sliding glass doors and looked outside. “Looks like the rain has stopped. Amanda, you’ll need to clean up the porch. Sweep off all the leaves, put some candles around, arrange the chairs in a semicircle, and put the table over there,” she said, pointing to the far side of the porch. “And pick some wildflowers from the meadow. We can use them to brighten up the porch.”

Amanda shot a look at Anne, and they both rolled their eyes. It always seemed like Alyssa was bossing them around, but they were used to it by now.

“I’ll organize the snack table so it doesn’t look like a huge mess,” Alyssa continued. “Remember, we only have ten minutes. So hurry!”

Amanda grabbed the broom, a couple of old jam jars to use as flower vases, and some tea lights from the cupboard and went out to the porch. Winters in Glory, Texas, were usually sunny and warm during the day, but the temperature could dip when the sun went down. Even so, the Peterson sisters agreed that as long as it didn’t rain too much, it would be fun to celebrate outside while the clock ticked toward midnight.

Amanda wiped all the furniture dry and then swept the leaves away. And although the wooden furniture was now arranged and tidy, it still looked drab. Annoyed that Alyssa had been right about needing flowers to brighten up the porch, Amanda sighed loudly and walked behind the Petersons’ house, where she was sure to find some wildflowers in the vast meadow that surrounded their house.

Amanda had always loved smelling the subtle, sweet scent of the wildflowers as she played catch with her dad in the evenings or practiced basketball layups in the driveway. The colorful fields that surrounded their redbrick home made it look just like a picture on a postcard. But she always wished that they lived a little closer to town. Their house was miles away from school, and she always felt so isolated living out in the middle of nowhere, as she usually put it. One tiny, winding dirt road was the only way to get to and from the Petersons’ house. Sometimes her friends’ parents would complain about making the drive for after-school homework sessions and weekend sleepovers. And, to be fair, it really was far from town. Amanda also wished she had neighbors she could visit. Only one house stood along with the Petersons’ at the end of the dusty road. And it had been abandoned since before they had even moved to Glory, so it didn’t really count.

Amanda remembered noticing earlier that day while it was still light, that the prettiest wildflowers were blooming in the field farthest from their home—and closest to the abandoned house. Amanda bit her bottom lip. She didn’t want her sisters to call her chicken, but she also didn’t want to get in trouble. Their parents never wanted them roaming too close to the deserted house.

And that was fine with Amanda and Alyssa. They never liked getting too close anyway. It was a strange house. And it always left them feeling uneasy. Vines—dead and brown—enveloped it, making it look like a bug trapped in a spider web. The mailbox hung from its post by a single rusty nail—waiting to be released to its freedom—and creaked at the smallest passing breeze. And, once, she and Alyssa saw the mailbox swinging back and forth on its nail on a perfectly still and cloudless day.

For some reason, only the youngest Peterson sister, Anne, had never been bothered by the house’s oddities. She had laughed when her sisters told her that a silly old mailbox had made them run as fast as wild horses back into the safety of their own house. And, of course, they later agreed that there had to be a rational explanation for why the mailbox had swayed back and forth on a windless day. An animal could have scampered across and the girls didn’t see it. Still, the thought of anything having to do with the house sent a chill down Amanda’s spine.

As Amanda reached the wildflowers, she thought about that eerie day, and her heart thumped rapidly in her chest. She quickly gathered the prettiest flowers, willing herself not to look over at the old house. The basket she was carrying was just about filled when she heard a screeching sound. Amanda cringed. She couldn’t resist it any longer. She looked up toward the house.

There it stood, forbidding as always, surrounded by the same dead trees. Amanda held her breath as she waited for more sounds to come from the direction of the house. There were none. Amanda puffed out her cheeks while exhaling with relief. But her muscles quickly tightened as she noticed something about the house that sent a cold shock through her veins. The shutters on the attic window, which had been tightly closed and locked ever since the Petersons moved to Glory, were suddenly wide open. The window, now exposed to the world, stared dark and bleak, almost as though the house were alive and glaring straight toward Amanda.
