This well-written combat memoir is heartfelt, earnest, honest, and melancholy—a poignant look at two intense tours in Vietnam. During his first tour in Vietnam, from 1967 to 1968, Dick Taylor was a well-trained and highly motivated amateur assigned to advise a hard-bitten Army of the Republic of Vietnam infantry battalion working in the mud and streams of IV Corps. He became savvy in a hurry and found that he was both brave and resourceful. He barely survived the Tet Offensive of 1968, and then served on an advisory team staff. For the next two years, Taylor earned a Ranger tab, served on a division staff, and schooled on. He met his wife, and married her days before he returned to Vietnam. Taylor’s second tour, from 1970 to 1971, was altogether different. He immediately assumed command of Bravo Company, 1/7 Cav, and excelled as a commander and a leader. He was aggressive in the field, confident in his command, and assertive with his superiors. He fought a good war, a successful war, and when he was forced to take a staff job it was as his battalion’s intelligence officer. But the war was winding down, its purpose lost. Taylor’s spirit’s flagged, but not his fidelity.

My experiences in Vietnam as reflected in this seminal work influenced my novels of love in war: Eden Lost (Philippine-American War), Return to Eden (World War II), Almost Eden (Vietnam), and The Falcon and the Dove (Iraq). War imprints those involved and also those who love them. It is a timeless dimension that unfolds in many different ways, and is especially true when both the warrior and the lover are caught up in the drama. These make enjoyable reads but are not the fantasy romances that are so popular, rather gritty, hard and realistic relationships that are influenced by the harshest of environments of life and death equations. Outstanding new Vietnam Memoir

I read this in advance galley and submitted a review to a periodical. This is an outstanding book about a young lieutenant (Richard Taylor) who traveled to Vietnam as a boy and became a man very quickly. As he notes, he was looking for an adventure of a lifetime and he found it. Prodigal is a remarkably moving story. It is naturally enough a combat memoir, but it is a heartfelt and at times (almost too) personal autobiography detailing Taylor's pair of tours to Nam.
His first was 1967, when Taylor was assigned to a veteran Army of the Republic of Vietnam outfit. Taylor details the patrols and enemy action, and the boredom and yearning for home very well. His tour ended with his involvement in the middle of the 1968 Tet Offensive, in which he was almost killed. The book is just starting. Taylor meets and falls for Sandy and the second half of the book is about his second tour and his long distance relationship (very sad, very moving). He returned in 1970 to lead Bravo Company (1/7 Cavalry). Without doubt Taylor was a good combat officer. He mentions a lot of other men and officers, offers assessments, is pretty straightforward about the whole affair.
The book includes maps (which are good) and photos (which I have not seen as they were not in the advance galley). Prodigal is a fine story, and one of many finally coming from the pens of a generation of soldiers who gave everything they had and have yet to be fully thanked.

Dick and I were Classmates and graduated from North Georgia College in 1966.The Prodigal tells it like it was not only from a Combat viewpoint but from a
wife /husband relationship.With most of us being newly married before deploying ,thus putting a long distance strain on our marriage ,we would also have to deal with the fact that the War had changed us in a dramatic way !!

I`m no professional critic, but I`m a huge fan of the barbarian.
This is not a review that details every aspect of the book because I think those two have already done a masterful job in pinpointing every little thing about this arch. This review is rather some impressions I had while reading the book, nothing fancy here.
Well, all I can say is that this is THE BEST ADAPTATION ever made by the trio Truman/Giorello/Villarrubia. And saying it is the best it is something really big.
This team is responsable for such gems as Cimmeria and Iron Shadows in the Moon adaptations(just check out the reviews of those books here on Amazon and see for yourself why people claim this team to be one of the best Conan has ever seen). And they deserve their reputation, specially when we are talking about such pearl as Phoenix on the Sword.
The story is tight, convincing, very well written and organized and is accompanied by Giorello`s art, which has become a standard when it comes to the current series.
The colors are quite good and they match the art pretty well. My review on the previous book of this team, The Scarlet Citadel, was not so positive when it comes to the colors, because I had the impression that on The Scarlet Citadel Vilarrubia`s tones seem to compete with Giorello`s art: they were too heavy in some panels and the choices made for some pages made them look bad.
But here on Phoenix on the Sword Vilarrubia renders every tone in a very balanced way and they only add to the artistic atmosphere in every single page, with no exception.
This book proves that what was already very good has become better. I can only fanthom what this team will be doing in their next work, if they just keep improving.
Recommended for those that are not so acquainted with Conan just yet and a must for the die-hard fans.

As good as what's come before

The original story (written by Robert E. Howard (REH), Conan's creator) was first published in the pulp magazine 'Weird Tales' back in 1932. From their the story has been reprinted many times in hardback and paperback anthologies that focused on, of course, CONAN stories. Then, in 1970 Marvel Comics acquired the rights to the CONAN properties and the comic book became quite a success with Roy Thomas at the helm, adapting many REH stories. However it was in 1976 that the CONAN Annual #2 hit the stands and that was my first exposure to 'The Phoenix on the Sword.' The art was superb with a prologue by the great John Buscema and the remainder of the story was done equally as well by Vicente Alcazar and Yong Montano. From that, it became my favorite Conan story.
Now, all these years later I found myself excited all over again. Dark Horse Comics has done a great job with the CONAN legend and Timothy Turman's adaptation does not disappoint. Tomas Giorello manages to capture the John Buscema CONAN style, making him larger then life; a scarred barbarian that is literally an unstoppable force of nature. But Jose Villarubia's colors finish this off creating mood and a colorful grittiness that I think REH himself would give a nod of approval to if he were with us today.
I highly recommend this if your tastes lean in the direction of Sword and Sorcery. It is in effect a short story, but the term Graphic Novel fits this well as you get so much more and it fulfills the potential that this medium of entertainment has to offer. 5 stars and more!!

Top notch Sword & Sorcery fun!!!

In the opening story board's of the dark Horse "Conan" Graphic Novel series a disgruntled Wazir is telling a curious young prince Conan tales! Other than a brief glimpse into the Thoth -Amon character in the "Conan" series it is in this "King Conan" Graphic novel we see who that disgruntled evil looking Wazir really was or is in relationship to Conan!!! Thoth Amon one of Conan's most threatening opponents he ever faced!!! I collected Dark Horses "Conan" series from volume #0 to #12 and Conan had yet to take the throne & the artwork was starting to fade from Graphic Novel quality to Comic book quality so I purchased four "King Conan" tales. I wanted to make sure my graphic Novel collection had some story's of Conan as King of Aquilonia. I am very happy I did & the art quality is top notch as well as the story translation. Now I can relax & collect at my leisure.

Robert E. Howard had a amazing gift considering he was basically a self taught author. His gift for describing mood & vividly detailed scenery & the action in fight sequences in so few words at a poetic pace that imprinted the scene so perfectly in the mind's eye of the reader that transforming his story's into graphic Novel's is a match made in heaven!!! Being a artist myself I have drawn many scene's from his Turlough O'Brien & Athelstane the Saxon tales & would love to see those unfinished story's compiled together with the finished tales & made into a graphic Novel!!! I have collected the Dark Horse "Conan" series #0 through #12 & picked up 4 of the "King Conan" graphic novel series considering these 2 series the best in the many collected offerings of Conan material. I have been a huge Robert E. Howard fan since discovering Zebras release of the collection of short story's "The Pigeon's from Hell" at age ten . Over the years I went through many stages of being a R.E.H. fan from collecting different publisher's, to checking out the "Comic Book Conan", & even went through my Howard purest fan stage. Now at age 50 I am rediscovering R.E.H.'s work through "The Graphic Novel format"! It is my opinion R.E.H. pumped out adult fantasy hero's like Stan Lee pumped out Super hero's! Some how the movie industry has always seemed to fall short of capturing R.E.H.'s hero's to film successfully. Ironically enough I think the best job to date has been the movie 'Solomon Kane" which was a non Howard origins tale but totally captured Howards hero to perfection & even manages to explain how this puritan has learned such great fighting skill, something only eluded to in one of Robert E. Howards poems. I truly hope they make another Solomon Kane movie based this time on Howards work! Considering other than Solomon Kane Howards hero's have paled by comparison to his story's on the big screen, I am truly happy that Dark Horse is doing a great job bringing Conan to life, & I highly recommend the graphic Novel format's "Conan" & King Conan" over the other versions of collected retold comic book offering's. Finally through the graphic Novel's you get a better or should I say truer peek into the colorful world Howard created for his brawny hero! While J.R.R. Tolkien dedicated a life time to building Middle Earth along with complete alphabet's & language's for his characters Robert E. Howard did equally well creating elaborate landscapes fantastic flora & fauna often as threatening as the antagonist his characters faced! While the mood of many Conan tales was dark the world he adventured in was full of vivid color right down to the megalithic structures of Lappa lazuli. Emerald, Gold & rare earth element's! I am also glad they wrote Conan as being more than just a so called "Barbarian" Considering his ability to read, write & speak multiple language's, knowing metal forging, Astronomy well enough to pilot a ship & knowing pharmaceutics from the plants in his natural world & his unerring ability to quickly rise to the top position of every endeavor he chose to pursue, even when he was a cultural outsider would indicate to me he was sporting an I.Q. around 160+!!! These graphic novel's stay very close to Howard's original tales & when they deviate it isn't to the point of changing Conan's character just polishing his rough edges... he was written in the 1930's after all. I think with Robert E. Howards love for art he would totally approve of the "Conan" of the graphic Novel's as well as any other of his many character's to be reborn in this vibrant format!

The latest pickle Heather Wells gets herself into perfectly demonstrates the magic of Meg Cabot

I grew up on Meg Cabot's books. The Princess Diaries, All-American Girl, Avalon High, The Mediator... these are the novels that shaped my love for the young adult genre, which was why I jumped on the chance to review the newest book in her most popular adult fiction series. The Heather Wells Mysteries have been around for quite a while, but in this most recent installment, the quirky, lovable heroine is back, and she's getting married—but that doesn't mean things will be calming down for her. In fact, it's just the opposite; when a student in her residence hall turns up dead even before classes start at New York College, she'll have to use her resources—and her wits—to get to the bottom of the fishy business going on in Fischer Hall—and save her wedding.

The Bride Wore Size 12 is true to Cabot's hilarious, pitch-perfect style. Impossible to put down and funny to the core, it's fabulously misleading and unpredictable until that one moment when the truth will click and everything rushes together. While it will have you at the edge of your seat and your heart pounding erratically throughout, I consider it a triumphant flourish of a feel-good novel—because just reading it will definitely make you a happier person.

Heather is a delightful narrator—both likable and genuine! I love how she's hard-working, clumsy (there's a little bit of each of us in her personality!), but still super sharp. What I admire so much is how, even though she never strays far from her beliefs and herself, she still has vulnerabilities and tenderness that make her so human. Empowered by the people who love and care for her at her side—as well as the thought of finally marrying the man of her dreams—she is able to plow through any problem that's headed her way, including the unfortunate incident among the students and an unpleasant reminder of her past.

I was also extremely impressed by how true-to-life the university backdrop of the novel was, as Cabot's fictional settings tend to be. It's SO realistic, and I can vouch for this with certainty because there are exact parallels with my own college; Meg Cabot definitely outdid herself with creating a "typical" college campus. I did feel like some of the mystery scenarios aren't as realistic, such as how easily Heather is able to get information from security and the police, but those are little logistics. For a mystery novel with less gravity than most, however, that wasn't too big an issue.

Although this book is the 5th in the series, it makes a phenomenal standalone novel. I had no problem following, even without having read the previous books. However, now my curiosity is piqued to actually try them—that's how much I loved this one!

Pros: Heather is such a likable heroine // Cooper is dreamy // College is realistically described // Breezily hysterical // Very effortless readability // Every single character is vivid and so well portrayed, even the villains and minor characters! // Cute contemporary tone // Murder mystery is actually well plotted and suspenseful

Cons: Not as much romance as I would have liked, but I'm guessing the previous novels have more of Heather and Cooper! // Slightly unrealistic depiction of a murder case

Verdict: The latest pickle Heather Wells gets herself into perfectly demonstrates the magic of Meg Cabot; the story the acclaimed author creates is addicting, suspenseful but still light-hearted, and one of those books you just hate to put down. The snarky yet compassionate, tongue-in-cheek yet sincere, and entertaining yet straightforward tone dictates a college-set murder investigation in this contemporary cozy mystery. If you're looking for a new adult novel with substance and style—as well as a good laugh—don't miss out on The Bride Wore Size 12 and the entire series.

Rating: 8 out of 10 hearts (4 stars): An engaging read; highly recommended.

I've read the complete series, and all of Meg's books. This was one of my favorites. I'll miss Heather & Cooper. It was the perfect ending to a modern love story

Well written, with dynamic characters, humor, and lots of suspense, this book does not disappoint! Heather Wells must once again solve the mystery of a dead student in the dorm, this time an RA. Putting clues together and asking the right questions, Heather once again figures out who done it!

While earning a degree in acting, Lesley fell in love with theatrical costuming, and pursued that as a career while nurturing her passion for writing on the side. Courtney Jacobs doubted there could be enough coffee in all of Thornton Springs, Montana, to see her through this movie shoot.

After filling her paper cup with the morale-boosting brew, she headed back toward the set. All around her, sleep-deprived crew members hustled to transform this charming burg into an old Western town. She checked her watch. 7:00 a.m. Within an hour, Keith Kingsley, the temperamental director of North to Montana—N2M to insiders—would be ready to call "action," and he wasn't exactly known for his patience.

"Move it or bleed!" A rigger bellowed as he charged past, swinging an aluminum grip stand just over Courtney's head.

She danced around a coil of electrical cables then sidestepped a set painter as he examined the distressing he'd given a storefront. Wincing as the gaffer shouted out coarse instructions to his crew of lighting techs, she ducked to avoid a swooping boom pole.

A contented sigh slipped through her lips. With just four independent films on her resume—two a year since graduating from college—she felt lucky to have booked a major studio-backed project so early in her career.

She'd been hired as personal assistant to the star, Angela Bijou—an A-list actress with a reputation for supreme diva behavior and for taking up with her leading men. Angela had made it clear from day one that Jeffrey Mark Caulfield (sizzling from the recent success of The Pharaoh's Tomb), would be no exception.

The bleep of Courtney's cell phone drew her from her wandering thoughts. Balancing her stillfull cup on the edge of her clipboard, she opened a text from the key costumer.

Courtney gnawed at her lower lip. If Ms. Bijou didn't know about the fttng, it would be one more thing for her to take out on Courtney.

Hurrying down the center of the newly dirtencrusted street, she clenched her cup between her teeth and shoved her clipboard under her arm. She flicked open the phone keyboard and tapped out a response while dodging a gaggle of grips positioning an old wooden wagon by the edge of the just-built boardwalk.

Nearing the area where the first scene of the day would be shot, Courtney hit Send and scanned the street. Several cast members milled about in costume but—no surprise—Angela wasn't among them. Giving a cursory glance to the berry-pink Swatch she'd been given as a thank-you from her actress on her last movie, she headed toward the makeup trailer in the hope that Angela had made it to her call on time.

Striding across the set, she drank in the liveliness of her surroundings. It was great being a part of something this vital. So what if her job at the moment was keeping the leading lady on-schedule? She was an indispensable cog in the machine.

"Court-neeey!"

Stopping in her tracks, Courtney spun around to face the familiar angry command. From the first day of rehearsals, Angela Bijou had demonstrated an annoying articulation of Courtney's name that made the word itself sound like an outright accusation.

"You had better explain what's going on here!" The woman stormed toward Courtney with a heated, resolute gait and fire in her famous jade-green eyes. Her flimsy peach-silk cover-up and matching turban signified that she hadn't yet made it to hair or wardrobe, and screamed "Look at me—I'm a star."

Courtney opened her mouth to respond, but Angela cut her off with a tirade that rivaled a hurricane.

"Are you completely incompetent?" Angela screeched as she planted her lithe form two feet from where Courtney stood.

As the blood rose to her face, Courtney became painfully aware that the entire cast and crew had turned to gawk. "What's the matter, Ms. Bijou?" She fought to keep her tone level.

"What's the matter?" Angela tossed her platinum pin-curled head back with such force her tiny neck made a faint cracking sound. "The 'matter' is that I have no water in my trailer."

Courtney let that register. All this fuss over a plumbing problem?

"D'eau Douce." Angela crossed her willowy arms. "Imported from France. Does that ring a bell? I'm supposed to have four sixteen-ounce bottles chilling in my trailer every morning when I arrive."

"Oh…" Courtney skimmed her memory. "For. .drinking?"

"Yes, for drinking!" Angela gave her a scowl that implied she should audition for the next season of American Idiot. "I wash my face in pure Norwegian spring water, which by the way I didn't see in there, either."

Courtney heard herself utter something about making a few phone calls to Norway as she took a giant step backward.

"Look." Angela apparently wasn't done yelling. "I need sixty-four ounces a day. How else am I supposed to keep my skin so youthful and clear?" She drew her fingertips across her youthful, clear cheek for emphasis. "Every. Single. Day."

"Uh…okay, Ms. Bijou." Courtney scribbled out a note on the top page of her clipboard as she took a half step in what she hoped was the direction of water of all desirable nationalities. A thought stopped her cold. "Was that sixty-four ounces of the drinking water or the washing kind?"

Angela's eyes narrowed. "Don't play dumb. Obviously, you knew about this."

Gripping her half cup of tepid coffee between her thumb and her index finger, Courtney flipped through the papers on her clipboard as if to exonerate herself from this allegation. She knew nothing about her actress's water preference and made a mental note to be sure always to ask in the future.

With what she hoped would read as a competent smile, she turned to go, smacking into a carpenter as he flew past with an armload of railroad ties. Coffee flew from her cup, splashing across her papers and down the front of her sea-green T-shirt. She winced.

Angela's shrieking voice rang out from behind. "Check my contract! I need my water every day I'm on the set. I'm supposed to have it!"

Courtney clutched her clipboard to her stained front and darted toward what appeared to be a grocery store on the next block. If the past five minutes were any indication of things to come, this shoot was going to be a nightmare.

Can't Wait for More From This Author!

From the first moment I met poor, frazzled Courtney (in a small Montana grocery store, trying to buy French spring-water for her uppity actress employer) I knew this story was going to be a keeper. Add in a hunky cowboy, a few horses, and a writer who can convey humor like few I've ever seen, and you have the perfect smorgasbord of a story. You'll laugh, your heart will flutter, and most importantly, you'll be touched by the gentle spiritual message.

So what are you waiting for? Grab yourself a cup of coffee and a slice of Montana huckleberry pie and curl up for a read you won't soon forget!

Well done, Mrs. McDaniel! Looking forward to the next book in this series!

What a Ride!

If you're looking for a sweet stay-cation all the way to Montana with a cowboy, a Hollywood film crew complete with diva, and a few gold nuggets of truth woven in, you'll love Lesley Ann McDaniel's new romance! Poor Courtney, the stressed out assistant to the diva herself, is just hoping she won't get fired. She's finally landed this job which she hopes will take her far in a filmmaking career, but it's all she can do to keep the actress happy.

Enter Adam, handsome cowboy, who just wants is to keep his ranch, which is the only reason he let the crew film there. Neither of them anticipated the ride they were in for, stampeding their hearts and even making them look a little deeper at their spiritual walks.

With plenty of action, spicy dialogue and laugh out loud humor, this book is a winner!

Lights, Cowboy, Action, Lesley Ann McDaniel's debut book, gives a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of movie making―and in Montana, of all places.
Courtney, a diva actress's assistant, is run ragged satisfying the diva's wishes for coffee, tea or French bottled water. Then a dilemma arises―Angela, the diva, wants Courtney to set up a date for her with Adam Greene, the owner of the ranch where they're shooting the film. The conflict? Courtney is finding herself every minute to be more and more attracted to the same handsome ranch owner. Will she save her job by wrangling the date? Will she alienate Adam, who's more interested in the diva's assistant than the diva? Will Courtney break her own heart?

The characters lived for me - even the self-centered ditsy diva. This may be McDaniel's debut book, but it's a well-rounded story, interestingly written and has beautiful descriptions of Montana that obviously come from the author's own heart. I loved the humor, the twists and turns of the plot and the peek at an actress's way of life. I highly recommend this book to my friends.

In each of these three stories, which orignally appeared in Esquire magazine in the Seventies and Eighties, narrator Paul Whitehurst recalls significant episodes from his childhood in Virginia during the Depression and the Second World War. In "Love Day," Paul remembers his father's analysis of the economic benefits the war has brought to the South, as he himself sails to Japan with the invasion fleet. In "Shadrach," a dying former slave returns to the rundown plantation where he was born. In the title story, Paul commemorates his mother's agonizing death from cancer. The narratives, as Styron says in a preface, "reflect the experiences of the author," as well as recapitulate, in luminous prose, most of the major themes of his longer fiction, from Set This House on Fire (1951) to Sophie's Choice (1981). A short little trip into a half-comfortable kind of writerly nostalgia in three stories (declares an Author's Note) that ``reflect the experiences of the author at the ages of twenty, ten, and thirteen.'' Bending his hand again to scenes of WW II, Styron visits (``Love Day'') a Marine Division in the Pacific, offering in brief form a standard cast of characters from Many-a-Movie: the tough but just-a-guy commander; the platoon leader who wants to be a writer; the narrator who has secret home-thoughts and, through them, learns something about meaning and fear. Throughout, the rickety narrative is made forgivable--barely--by the pleasures of the period detail. ``Shadrach,'' set in 1935, is more complex--and perhaps overall less convincing, though even more painstaking in its (in this case) recalling of rural Depression-era details. In it, a middle-class boy admits to his envy of the slovenly but life-rich existence of a family of fallen white trash (the Dabneys), to whom a 99-year-old ex-slave returns to die. Finally, set in 1938, amid rumblings of approaching war, ``A Tidewater Morning'' shows a boy rebelling against one kind of tyranny (his mean and niggardly paper-route boss) while his mother (once a classical singer) dies horribly of the inescapable tyranny of cancer and his father crumbles gradually through weakness and pity. Styronic plusses and minuses: the displeasures of the overly- written-about and revisited, and of the rickety narrative shortcut (``This is a farce! We didn't come out here these thousands of miles to sit around that stinking little island and watch our hands and feet rot off. Three Short and Powerful Stories

Three short stories in true Styron style. Seemingly autobiographical but woven by a gentle storyteller,perhaps gazing up at clouds on a sunny afternoon, talking with a son or nephew about to become a man. Passing along powerful life lessons..

When Did You First Meet William Styron?

I first met William Styron when a mutual acquaintance - Sophie's Choice - introduced us at The Modern Library's list of Top 100 Novels. I bumped into him later with his friend Darkness Visible at The Modern Library's list of Top 100 Non-Fiction Books. I thought I knew him by the time he told me all about The Confessions of Nat Turner.

And so it was that I chose to meet him again on A Tidewater Morning at my local Salvation Army bookstore. My cost of admission was $0.25 and I decided to meet him again because his alma mater, Duke University, won the 2010 NCAA Basketball Championship.

Styron's an interesting dude. Both he and his father suffered from depression and his mother died from breast cancer when he was 14. He was a Marine, an editor at McGraw-Hill, and once provoked an employer to fire him so he could write his first novel. He died from pneumonia in Martha's Vineyard at the age of 81.

Above the door to his studio he posted a quote from Gustave Flaubert: "Be regular and orderly in your life so that you may be violent and original in your work."

As I read the three stories that make up A Tidewater Morning I was struck by how unreal his descriptions, characterizations, and dialog were to my senses. Yet, it all works beautifully in the end. The greatest triumph of this book is the way these three stories create an arc of experience that rips your perceived ideas of meaning from the fabric of your life and then sews them back together with even stronger stitching because you made the effort to reach, and read, the title story.

I didn't think A Tidewater Morning compared very well to his other writings until I sat down to write this. But it does. I can tell you this because, although I've never literally met him, I feel now I've not only met him, but know him in a way that was impossible before reading this little book.

I'll tell you what. Let me know if you don't like this book. I'll gladly repay you the quarter I spent on it.

powerful book

I have read most of Styron's books and after reading Darkness Visible, I was very curious about the early years of his life. His obituary mentioned the book as a key to understanding his depression, so I quickly ordered it and couldn't put it down. What a story! Since then I have begun reading his daughter's book called Reading My Father and wonder if she mentions his childhood experiences. I'd recommend all three books to anyone interested in understanding depression. Styron was able to describe it so well.

This is IT! The Evolution of Success Philosophy

Getting to It! ushers in the next phase of personal success evolution. My journey started with authors Zig Ziglar and Napoleon Hill. I dug into the periphery of Tony Robbins and Dale Carnegie. And then I stood and cheered as Stephen R. Covey revolutionized the industry with his seven habits and four quadrants. I've been to the seminars telling me to meet at the top and I've sat in the workshops figuring out what things went first. I can confidently say that Jones Loflin and Todd Musig have taken the years of study and philosophy and brought us to the next level.

The authors write about a large number of people that still aren't setting goals. I can attest this is true based on my experiences working for non-profits, Fortune 500 companies, being employed by the government, and even in activities with my children. Why? I think there's too much clutter, too many items pinging us for attention--too many "its" to figure out. We are too frazzled to figure out if this a second quadrant item or a fourth quadrant item. People walk out of seminars feeling pumped up, but are loaded down with specially designed planners that look like math homework. They end up being overwhelmed and never get anywhere.

This is it. This is the solution that is heavily influenced by everything you've been to, and this is what takes it one step further--actually getting it done. The first chapter or two sets the paradigm and gets everyone on the same sheet of music. Yes, that was just cliché, but it was intentional. If the beginning of the book sounds familiar, it's because it is. Once the authors get everyone up-to-speed (another workism) they take off into new territory.

Like other great books in this genre, we are given new analogies to work with. One of my favorite Covey analogies of the past has been filling a fish tank with big rocks and little rocks. In this book, Getting to It!, the two new analogies are a funnel and an empty lot needing to be cultivated; my favorite of the two being the lot. These are great images that sit in my mind as I tackle "it".

Kudos to the authors and editors of this book for making it flow smoothly. This reads as if I was sitting in a conference, listening to the speaker. I wish there were pictures, charts, and graphs to help illustrate the points, but maybe this is something that shows up in the book form (I read this on my Kindle). This could have especially benefited the authors' discussion about using filters. However, there are bullet points and exercises, so it's not a lost concept. I also found the highlighted quotes featured on some pages were the same ones I highlighted from the text--this means important concepts are made clear.

Despite my long history of reading books like this, I'm walking away having learned two new ideas (beside the already mentioned analogies). One idea is scope creep, which is allowing the scope of "it" to grow and morph away from the original definition. The other idea is the true affect that multitasking has on a person trying to achieve "it".

Overall, this book pulls together most everything we've learned so far in trying to define our lives, better our business, and achieve our dreams--and then it advances us to the next level of thinking. It would be unfair for me to say this is a revolutionary book, but I can say in all honesty that this book is evolutionary. The authors have done a great job of culminating strategies, simplifying them, and presenting them in a new and easy to understand format. If you are looking to better yourself and achieve your personal (or business-driven) goals, then you owe it to yourself to read "Getting to It!"

IT is More than Just a Two-Letter Word

Loflin and Musig have come together again after their success of Juggling for Elephants (2007) to take us deeper into the world of Getting to It. First, this book has changed the way I look at this little two-letter pronoun which so often gets overlooked, as it now means Important Things. These things are whatever need to get done so I can reach my goals, and this little word can represent all of them. Second, this book brought me back to when I first learned how to stay organized. I was starting out with a new company and they spent the time to train everyone on The Franklin Covey method of time management. Getting to It has reminded me of the basic principles I use all of the time, but in a light-hearted, yet meaningful way. I always have set my “Big Rocks” first, but now I not only set them first, but I measure them against the IT and see if IT is something that needs to be in my funnel. If IT does not then out IT goes. Third, the ease of this book’s writing style is reminiscent of books such as Who Moved My Cheese? One gets into IT and then it is over and the light bulb burns bright. Finally, Getting to It is the reminder we all need to do what we love to do, what we are meant to do, what we need to do, versus just doing something for doing sake. Take a couple of hours out of your day and read Getting to It and then share it with those you care about and work with, so everyone can have more time for IT.
