Not just for twelve-year-old girls
By Alt
After reading a couple pages of The Adventures of Superhero Girl, I thought "this would be a cute book to give as a gift to a twelve-year-old girl but it's really not for adults." Then I kept reading. Then I read some more. Then I realized I wanted to read it all the way to the end because it's really, really funny. Really.
The Adventures of Superhero Girl is essentially a gag strip. Each page concludes with a laugh or something close -- a snicker, a chuckle, a smile. Superhero Girl knocks over trees to rescue cats. She doesn't have the requirements for the job -- an origin story, an archnemesis -- but she can lift objects that are ten times her own size. Then again, as someone tells her, so can ants. That cracked me up.
Sometimes she forgets to put on her cape. Sometimes she forgets what her superpowers are. Sometimes she forgets to take off her mask when she changes into her secret identity. When she forgets to put on sunblock before donning her costume, she gets tan lines around her mask. That also cracked me up.
In flashbacks we see Superhero Girl as a kid, fighting with her superpowered brother, and later as she chooses a college, decides to strike out on her own, and gets kicked out of school because of all the surprise ninja attacks. It isn't easy being Superhero Girl.
I'm sure a twelve-year-old girl would love this, but even older guys with a sense of humor should enjoy The Adventures of Superhero Girl.

What a surprise ! Faith Erin Hicks hits it out of the park! Amazing comic read
By Don Witzel
Teen girl \ young adult dealing with life while being a superhero. Told in comic strip fashion. Story & charter development top notch, plus humor is right on. I bought this for my Nieces after reading this (14 & 11) they loved it . Give it a go you won't be disappointed ...

A Little Bit of Everything - and All Good
By Pop Bop
The more you get in to this, the more there is to like.
We have a very appealing heroine. Hicks fits a lot of personality and attitude into her simple, expressive drawings and a few thought bubbles per strip. We have great secondary characters - the roomie, the superhero brother, the doubting bystander - who provide context for and commentary on Superhero Girl's various plights.
The humor is remarkably gentle and deadpan. The feel of the book is reminiscent of early "Doonesbury" and some of the most effective parts of the Scott Pilgrim saga. Maybe that's a Canadian thing, and I mean that in the best possible way. This gentle humor highlights the earnestness and sort of hapless nobility of our heroine.
The upshot is that there is a lot packed into this effort. Because it is a strip compilation there is a lot of room for changes in tone, story and mood. Maybe some adolescent angst; maybe some good natured kidding of the superhero genre; maybe a quiet strip with no punchline at all.
I should mention that the drawing is superb. Characters are very expressively rendered. There is no frantic hyperventilating. Imagine how accomplished you have to be to draw a strip that is funny and/or touching with no dialogue at all and only drawing to tell the story. Some of the panels are that good. (The book ends with excerpts from Hicks' "Sketchbook" that show the evolution of the character and her look. That's always interesting and it's a nice bonus here.)
So, if you would like to sample a cheerfully engaging and technically very accomplished work of art, this is a great place to start.
Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to the author or the publisher of this book.
