Alex Knight struggles to find a place between superheroes and supervillains in this explosive sequel to The Cloak Society, which School Library Journal says has "the same wide appeal as Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson books."
The Cloak Society has just pulled off the greatest takedown in Sterling City's history—but twelve-year-old Alex Knight has turned his back on the supervillains who raised him, and is fighting for the other side. Working with the superheroes is easier said than done, though . . . especially when your new teammates aren't sure your days as a villain are over.
Praised by Publishers Weekly for its "rapid-fire, comic book–style action," the Cloak Society trilogy delivers high-stakes battles, extraordinary superpowers, and an original twist on the superhero stories readers know and love. Fans of the 39 Clues and the Alex Rider Adventures will be hooked!

Gr 5–8—The battle for control over Sterling City has ended and the evil Cloak Society has won. Most of the good-guy Rangers of Justice have been trapped in the Gloom, an alternate dimension. The City's only remaining super-powered protectors are seven teenagers: three young Rangers and four former Cloak members who traded villany for heroism. Struggling to regroup, the teens must learn to work together despite their past differences and rescue the trapped Rangers. Adding to the group's trust issues are two new superpowered teens who want to join the team but whose true motives are suspect. Kraatz does a good job keeping readers guessing who may betray the heroes. Favorite characters from the first book return including telekinetic Alex, shape-shifter Kirbie, and tech genius Gabe. Kraatz continues to please readers who love comic book action with high-tech gadgets, fierce battles, and characters boasting an inventive arsenal of super abilities. Fans of the first installment will enjoy the continuing adventure and eagerly await the next in the series.—Marybeth Kozikowski, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY

“The Cloak Society must have zapped me like kryptonite, because the moment I opened it, I was frozen in place, reading long into the night, unable to move until I turned the last page.” (Christopher Healy, author of The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom)
From the Back Cover
Fallen heroes. Rising villains. The line between ally and enemy has been blurred.
Alex Knight was raised as one of the Cloak Society's most fiercely loyal young members. He eagerly awaited the day when Cloak would rule as the most feared villains in the world.
Then he met Kirbie, a junior member of the city's beloved heroes, the Rangers of Justice. Kirbie opened Alex's eyes to Cloak's true mission. Now Alex is determined to bring Cloak down. And there's no time to lose.
The Cloak Society has just pulled off the greatest takedown in Sterling City's history. Justice Tower is in ruins. And the Rangers of Justice have vanished.
Alex and Kirbie's only hope for defeating Cloak is to bring together the Junior Rangers and the other junior Cloak members who have turned their backs on their former leaders. But after years of hatred and enmity, fighting for the same side is easier said than done.

Couldn't put it down!
By kim pinson
I bought the first book of this series for my son when he was 9. He was a little too young for it though. So I started reading it and I couldn't put it down! I have always love the science fiction stories and loved reading when I was younger. Sadly I don't read as much as I got older and then my kids took over and, ya know, life happened- lol! I almost forgot how much I love to read!! I am so glad that my kids enjoy reading and having me read to them. After I read the first book, The Cloak Society, I could not wait until this one, Villians Rising, came out! It is just as great. Only now I am waiting, yet again, for the next one. You will not be disappointed.

Another great fun read. I mean how can you go wrong. Teenagers with superpowers battling the forces of evil. Nothing complicated. Just a good story and good writing.

...no curfew, no adult supervision, and the city's only hope...
By H. Bala
Amidst the chaff of the superhero in prose, there's a gem or two, and Jeramey Kraatz's The Cloak Society trilogy bodes to be such. The writer intends these books to be relished most by his 'tween readers, except old fogies like me can read and like them, too. The Cloak Society: Villains Rising is the terrific middle child of the trilogy and keeps up the narration from the perspective of 12-year-old telekinetic, Alex Knight.
Ten years after the world had thought itself rid of the diabolical Cloak Society, time to revisit that cautionary chestnut about the "not so fast" and "the bad penny always turns up." For ten years, after being defeated by the Rangers of Justice, Sterling City's preeminent superhero team, the Cloak Society's High Council has bided its time, scheming and setting the stage and training its younger generations of super-villains. In the first book (The Cloak Society), the Cloak Society made its move - and ***SPOILERS*** now for the first book - and took out the Rangers of Justice. That first book also told of how Alex, fourth-generation scion of the Cloak Society, came to realize that he'd been fighting on the wrong side. I guess with a name like "Knight" it was never in the cards for him to stay a baddie.
From the eyes of the world at large: Justice Tower has fallen, and, alarmingly, the Rangers of Justice have vanished. The sequel finds Alex and six other children in hiding, these seven fugitives composed of the remnants of the Junior Rangers and the Cloak Society's turncoat Beta team and challenged with two overriding objectives: foil the Cloak Society's bid to take over Sterling City and, also, rescue the Rangers from the Gloom, a terrifying otherdimensional wasteland that makes the Phantom Zone and the Negative Zone seem like theme parks. So, former rivals forced to work together - Jeramey Kraatz rapidly hones in on the shaky group dynamics of this makeshift team. For fans of Alex's interactions with his megalomaniacal mother and with Kirbie, the Junior Rangers' animal shapeshifter, there may be a bit of a letdown as those relationship threads take a back seat. Kraatz atones somewhat by fleshing out other existing side characters while introducing a crop of new players. These include the Omegas, the Cloak Society's designated covert agents and assassins. As if that's not enough cause to fret, Alex suspects there may be a mole in his fugitive crew. Trust issues aside, and with philosophies and training techniques that clash, yeah, it takes more than a minute to become BFFs.
The writer smartly invests in Alex's character development. I'm waiting to see where he goes with the concept of Alex's formerly only able to view the world thru a haze of blue but now occasionally able to see things in real color. Gratifyingly, time is taken to flesh out two of my other fave characters, the level-headed whiz engineer, Gage, and the exuberant 10-year-old teleporter, Misty (a.k.a. "The Mist"). And Misty's right, by the way, this ragtag bunch needs a team name.
The story packs in enough thrilling action-packed moments. And as in the first book, the third act ramps up to an explosive showdown (I relish the mishmash of super-powers). But there' also food for thought. Kraatz examines the consequences of being "nurtured" in an enclosed society and touches on the themes of not blindly following authority and the importance of developing your own set of morals and values. If you'd read and liked Marvel's comics about Power Pack and the Runaways, The Cloak Society is up that same alley, a group of fractious kids who at last succeeds thru teamwork and a sense of family. Man, the third book - The Cloak Society: Fall of Heroes - can't come soon enough. But, for real, they need a cool team name.
