Second to last book in the series and a good addition
By R. Adams
I have read all of Delaney's Last Apprentice books and can say with out a doubt that it is one of the best young adult stories published in the past 10 years. As with any series, some books are better than others. I really liked book 4, Attack of the Fiend, where we learn that Alice is the daughter of the Fiend (a devil like god) and Boney Lizzy, a powerful witch. I thought that the series wandered off story for a bit in books 6 and 7 (Clash of the Demons and Rise of the Huntress). They were excellent books, but did not move the main plot along as fast as I would have liked. Beginning with book 8 (Rage of the Fallen), Delaney has picked up the pace and we are now rushing to a dramatic conclusion in book 13. In I am Alice, we find Alice entering the dark in search of the Fiend's domain and the final Hero Sword, Destiny Blade, which will be used in a ritual to kill the Fiend once and for all. Alice knows that she will be part of the ritual and that Tom Ward, her one true live, must sacrifice her in order to kill the Fiend. If the ritual fails, Tom will die at the hand of the Fiend and the world will be plunged into a long period of chaos ruled by the Fiend. Alice knows the ending of the ritual, but is willing to be the sacrifice to save Tom. As she enters the dark, Alice meets many enemies and one friend from previous books. More than any other volume, I am Alice requires that you have read the previous books and remember some of their details, as Alice often refers to past events as she moves through the dark. I really liked how Delaney reintroduces many of these past characters as a way to fill in some of Alice's back story. We see her early days being trained as a witch by Boney Lizzy and how she was tested to see just how strong a witch she will become. The story is sort of a Whose Who of past villains. We also see just how much a Hell like place the dark really is. There is a lot of action in the book and as usual some parts which will scare the pants off of younger readers. For anyone who has not read this series, I highly recommend it. I can hardly wait for the final volume of this story arc. There is a hint in I am Alice of a possible future series featuring Slither and his Kobalos brothers. I will buy any book about the Last Apprentice world and hope the Delaney continues to entertain and scare us with many future volumes.

This was incredible, maybe even the best book too! This book was simply stunning, the Spooks Apprentice is coming to a close, and it isn't ending quietly!

Overlong with Easy-Outs
By SpirituallySpeaking
THIS is the book I've been waiting for this entire series. Alice is, by far, the best and most well-drawn character of this series and I've really been waiting for her to take center stage. At first, it was a bit jarring to get back into "Alice" mode because the last time we saw her, it was THREE books ago. She went to go "into the dark" and we never heard from her again. You know, it was kind of like those situations on soap operas where a character just goes upstairs and then...you never see them again in any episode. Very weird.

The sad part was that the in the previous two books in the series, Lure of the Dead and Slyther, the plots had absolutely NOTHING to do with the overall story arch. It's like they are their own separate novels. In fact, you could completely remove those two books (along with Night of the Huntress) and the series/story would still be completely intact.

I also felt that Alice's voice was off. She spoke so much in this book (internal monologue and external dialogue) that it was obvious that Delaney had lost the knack for her country girl, working class dialect. I missed that. Perhaps it's because Delaney hasn't written for the character of Alice in a couple of years. In much of the book, she speaks just as plainly as the other characters. Her dialogue could be switched with Thorne's and it would sound exactly the same. That stripped her of an important part of her identity for me. She just didn't sound like Alice.

The biggest problem I had with the book is that at this point, the plot needs to be RACING FORWARD to an amazing conclusion. Instead, Delaney takes us back in time, not once but twice to share memories of Alice that aren't integral to plot. In fact, he stops the plot at two critical points to tell these back-stories. This throws a HUGE brick wall into the momentum of the book, twice. The worst is the first time.

Alice experiences a betrayal and is in a life or death situation while we STOP cold and go back to learn about how she met Betsy Gammon. This detour, no kidding, easily takes up HALF of the 432-page book. By the time you get back to the present moment, you almost don't care. Worst of all, Betsy Gammon isn't important at all. Delaney is using Alice's time in the dark to re-introduce old villains who have been slain over the series and create a sort of gauntlet Alice must pass through to find the Dolorous blade. That's a cool device...but Betsy was never introduced. She a new character, so he had to tell her entire story here. Big mistake, as it KILLS the momentum. There were plenty of other great villains Delaney could have used in this moment that needed no additional explanation. Worse yet, the Betsy Gammon story isn't even that great. I felt like BOTH off-shoot back-stories in this book should have been included in the companion book, which isn't part of the series, that tells of Alice's youth. That was the place to put that information, not here.

The second detour involves a back-story about Alice's fear of spiders. It's actually a great story and the chapter, "The Testing" is the best in the whole book. Sadly, none of it is needed here since it just grinds the momentum to a stand still again.

I loved the way Delaney sets up "the dark" and creates different atmospheres within it. I just wish we'd stayed in the dark MUCH longer. Instead, we get back-story that doesn't propel us forward.

I did enjoy seeing the character of Thorne and almost became more interested in her than Alice. Alice can't really use her magic and so, sort of, becomes the "charge" of Thorne. It is she who is the real hero of the book. I kept waiting for Alice to come into her own in this adventure, but she kept falling into the "damsel in distress" mode having to be rescued by Thorne again and again. Yes, she does have a great moment near the end, but it's really too little too late.

All through the saga, there seem to be times when Delaney is giving Alice an easy out. The way gods and monsters are killed seems too easy, too convenient...especially since she isn't using magic.

Probably the biggest disappointment is when Alice emerges from the dark and Grimalkin tells her, "You really didn't need to do any of that. I have the Doomdryte. All you need to do is say this long spell flawlessly and the Fiend will die." Really? I felt cheated, like a fool and Alice should have, too. She went through all that...and I read all that...and NONE of it mattered?! That's like the classic, "It was all a dream" cop-out ending. What?! Once again, Delaney writes a book that's not even necessary to this series. That would be 4 books now that don't play into the overall plot.

I also take issue with the easy out of reading a spell and the Fiend dies. Yes, it's long. Yes, it has to be read flawlessly, but that challenge PALES in comparison to young Tom having to murder the girl he loves and Alice knowing she'll never be with him. THAT'S a challenge to overcome. THAT'S a sacrifice. I felt like Delaney painted himself into a corner and then the last easy out he gave was to himself.
