O Anticristo (Portuguese Edition), by Friedrich Nietzsche

– Somente os dias vindouros me pertencem. Alguns homens nascem póstumos."

excelente

Uma leitura realmente impactante. Uma forte crítica ao cristianismo sem negar o Cristo, que na visão de Nietzsche seria o único cristão genuino.

I really wasn't cut out for Nietzsche's work
By Marcelo Almeida
I guess Nietzsche is not my thing. The book was extremely boring and seemed just a bunch of thoughts bundled together without a lot of care or attention. We all get that he is frustrated and acid towards religion and that's just fine with me but it seems like he whines all the way through the book and that's just depressing. After about 80 pages or so, every page I turned I felt like ditching the book. I don't know if it was the translation to Portuguese but the grammar was pretty solid, can't complain about that.
I apologize to all fans of Nietzsche's work. I'll just leave you to his books and never bother you again.

"Please, don't let him take me."

Kelly Denning's heart twisted as his large blue eyes beseeched her. "I won't, Billy. I'll do my best to keep you safe."

"Promise?"

Kelly made a large X over her rapidly beating heart. Nothing was going to happen to Billy. "Cross my heart and hope to…"

Die. Not today. Not on my agenda this week.

She forced a bright smile, hoping the terrified child could see it in the dimness. "Cross my heart and hope to never lie."

"But you're an Arcane. My mommy says Arcanes lie all the time because your magick is weaker, not like us Elementals. Is she right?" His voice shook. "I don't know what to believe anymore. I just want to go home."

Not wanting his mother's prejudice to shake his faith, Kelly chose her words with care. "I promise you, I'll do everything I can to get you back to your parents."

"They won't want me anymore after this," Billy said in a small voice. "I won't be an Elemental if they drain my powers like they keep saying they will."

Emotion clogged her throat. Billy wouldn't be alive, either. But she had no intention of scaring him further.

"Your powers are still inside you. No one can take away who you are, honey."

"Not even a Dark Lord?"

Kelly sucked in a breath. Dark Lords were rare, but they were the most powerful Mages of all, created from pure evil. Only Arcanes were known to achieve this transformation through an ancient spell, which gave Elementals a natural fear of their weaker brethren.

"Especially not a Dark Lord."

"Will anyone save us? My dad knows some navy SEALs. They rescue people." Billy's voice trembled.

The two fangers upstairs would drain a navy SEAL dry. Ordinary navy SEALs couldn't save them. They needed someone higher on the food chain.

Her thoughts drifted to Sam Shaymore. He was a powerful Elemental Phantom Mage and, her sources said, a navy SEAL. Sam would rescue Billy, but Kelly doubted he'd take her along. Because, like other Elementals, Sam Shaymore blamed her father for killing his entire family.

I'm not like my father, Sam.

"Maybe," Kelly ventured. "But if they don't, we have to save ourselves. Just stick close to me, and do as I say."

No matter what happened to her, Billy must live.

Kelly hugged her knees, winced. Not a good idea. Still hadn't healed yet. Scanning the inside of the cramped, dark room, she assessed their prison's weak points as Billy huddled close.

He was the privileged son of a powerful Elemental Phantom Mage. Someone had stolen Billy out of his bed and brought him to this island to siphon away all his ripening magick. The process would kill him.

Not as long as I'm here, Kelly thought grimly.

Kelly's organization, Sight Finders, rescued Mage children. She'd discovered the missing Billy's whereabouts through an anonymous email tip. But the words that chilled her the most had been these: Arcanes are conspiring to create a Dark Lord. They plan to execute all Elemental Mages.

The email warned Billy was in Florida, where he'd be transported to this tiny island in the Caribbean. She'd stolen aboard the boat in Miami and nearly succeeded in freeing him. But the fangers had caught her and imprisoned her, as well.

Kelly stood, wincing at her protesting leg muscles. She peered out the slats of a narrow window. A thin ray of sunlight speared the darkness. They'd have to make a break for it now, before the vampires awakened. She could create a diversion and.

"Someone's coming," Billy whispered.

Heavy footsteps. Her palms grew clammy. Kelly rubbed them against her dirty jeans. Oh, gods, she knew what was coming next. She slipped the silver pendant off her neck and put it around Billy's neck.

"This will keep you safe. The triskele has much power."

Billy's eyes grew huge. "No, Kelly, what about you? You need magick protection, too!"

"I'll be fine. Stay in the corner. They can't hurt you if you wear the necklace."

"Kelly." The little boy's voice came as a whisper. "You're an Arcane. My mother says Arcanes are bad people. They're different from us and can't be trusted to be anything more than servants."

Grief twisted her heart. She knelt by the little boy and gathered his hands into hers.

"Listen to me, Billy. Whatever you've been told is wrong. My people are gentle and would rather practice their craft of chanting spells. Yes, they've been subservient for generations to Elementals. But they would sooner die themselves than turn to darkness and kill another to gain more power."

Billy's eyes were solemn. "But someone among your people has."

She squeezed his hands, unable to argue that point.

The door opened, showing a shaft of sunlight. Kelly winced as someone seized her wrist. The Arcane Mage grinned, showing a row of yellowed teeth. Her stomach roiled at the thought of a fellow Arcane hurting an innocent child. She laughed, hoping to calm Billy's fears. "Time to play the game again, right boys? It's a fun game."

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw another Arcane slap a heavy stick against his fat thigh. Her knees felt weak.

"Right," said the voice thick with menace. "Time to play the game."

As he swam through the clear Caribbean water, U.S. Navy SEAL Sam "Shay" Shaymore fought the instincts of his Mage shifter magick to change into an ocean-dwelling animal. With the three other SEALs using the nav boards equipped with compasses, they moved silently in swim pairs, their Drager rebreathers showing no telltale bubbles.

He kept his breathing even, slowed his banging heart rate. Dangerous as hell executing an op in broad daylight. But their orders were clear. Attack in the daylight, soon as possible. Ensign Grant "Sully" Sullivan had done recon on the target's mansion. Billy was being held in a first-floor room, guarded in daylight by two Arcane Mages armed with M16s and two nasty vamps at night. The heat sig from the night-vision binocs showed that he was still alive as of last night. A female, probably the nanny who'd kidnapped Billy, remained with him.

The top brass ordering this op knew nine-year-old Billy Rogers, the only son of a powerful U.S. senator, was being held captive. Keegan Byrne, the four-star admiral and Primary Elemental Mage who commanded the SEALs, knew a little more. Like the fact that Billy's dad was also a Phantom Elemental and an Elder on the stately Council of Mages.

It was an op loaded with policy-maker land mines. The worst kind for a SEAL on the elite Phoenix Force, a secret group of navy SEALs who were all paranorms. A human media explosion would ensue afterward, followed by the paranormal uproar created by the powerful Council of Mages.

Shay didn't care. The hell with afterward. Billy was all that mattered.

He and his teammates surfaced near the seawall. Blending in with the craggy rocks, they removed and stashed their gear.

Shay slicked back his hair with a hand, scanning the lush grounds for movement. Their point man, Lieutenant Matthew "Dakota" Parker, gave the signal for all clear. No one around. Time to move in, boys.

With a flick of his wrist, Shay cut the alarm by sending an electromagnetic current rippling into the system. The four SEALs crept up near a stand of palms, HK416 assault rifles at the ready. Silent as wraiths, they slipped away.

Shay hunkered down behind a group of palm trees, watching the other SEALs. Dakota shifted into a wolf and ran up the outside stairs. The Mages on the balcony would catch his scent and investigate, leaving the way clear for Sully and Petty Officer Third Class Ryder "Renegade" Thompson to capture the nanny and dipatch the vamps and Mages and grab Billy.

He clicked his radio twice. Answering clicks signaled as they all moved into position.

And then a woman stepped out of the house onto the patio and sank into a chaise longue by the pool.

Damn! Shay lifted his binoculars. The female daylight hugger must be the nanny. He bit back a curse and spoke into his throat mic, breaking radio silence.

"Alpha One, this is Bravo Two. I have a visual on Tango Five. Oscar Mike."

Double clicks on the radio acknowledged the transmission.

It took seconds for him to analyze the new threat. He could take her out, but brass wanted her for questioning. Instead of stealth, he opted for shifting. His magick was powerful, but the form was nonthreatening.

Inside he smiled.

Little Miss Sunshine, you're all mine.

Every bone in her body hurt. As part of the game, they'd beat her while she tried to stifle her screams to keep from terrifying Billy. Kelly refused to talk as they tried to get information on how she'd discovered their operation. As punishment, the Mages would dump her in the cell for a few minutes to assure Billy she was still alive and then put her into the sunshine.

Unlike other Arcanes, Kelly healed from exposure to direct sunlight. Probably a result of wearing the powerful triskele for so many years.

They'd bring her back into the darkness when she recovered. Just to hurt her all over again. Only this time, they'd beaten her a little harder. Billy had given her back the triskele to wear.

"Please, Kelly. It has good magick and will help you," he'd whispered.

She closed her eyes, and the ache in her muscles eased as the triskele amplified the sun's gentle strength. She heard a small, hopeful meow.

House cat. She gave a vague smile.

"Where did you come from, kitty? I thought the vamps di...

Treatment of the heroine is hard to swallow
By Jen (Red Hot Books)
I had some mixed feelings going on as read this book. I was really drawn into the romance. It was angsty and full of mistrust and old hurts. It was sexy and held my interest from beginning to end. But. There are some strong racist overtones that disturbed me throughout the story. Don't get me wrong, it's not about the color of anyone's skin, but make-believe species or not, the prejudice was hard to read at times.

Sam and Kelly are two different classes of mage. He is Elemental. She is Arcane. In their world, his class rules, while hers is maligned and treated as servants. But 12 years ago, they were young and in love and committed to making things work between them. Until it appeared her father killed his family. He left her that day and they have been apart ever since.

Now Kelly works to rescue kidnapped Elemental children. The Arcanes who are fed up with oppression are taking the kids to drain them of magic, in the hopes to conquer the Elementals who have mistreated them so long. Kelly is willing to risk everything to stop her misguided people. It's as she is trying to rescue one of the kids that she is reunited with Sam. He is now a Navy SEAL and his team mistakes her for one of the kidnappers. She must make him believe the truth and convince him to help her in her mission before it's too late.

Kelly and Sam are clearly two people who have never gotten over each other. But they are both so damaged by their past. I think the author tried to make Sam more sympathetic by showing us how torn up he was over his family's deaths. Unfortunately, it was hard to look past how he and everyone else treated Kelly. Society sees her as less than nothing. The mages of Sam's class can basically do anything to her. The way people speak to her is appalling. And while Sam isn't like that all the time, there are parts of the book he clearly judges her... not just for her father's actions, but for her race. Neither is fair. He LEFT her alone all those years ago. She lost just as much as he did that day. Now he still acts like she was someone who did him wrong. It's just not fair. She is truly a good person and she gets treated like dirt over and over again. Mostly by other people, but by Sam too. It's hard to get over.

That aside, there is good sexual tension there --and real emotion as well. Kelly is an extremely sympathetic character. I really wanted to see her happy ending. The thing is... when she finally gets it... it's wrapped up in a bow that is just a little too shiny. The end is just a little too easy. Especially in the bigger picture.

Like I said, mixed feelings. I didn't want to put it down, because it held my interest... but the treatment of the heroine was hard to take.

Hidden dangers and very passionate
By A. Richard
The Phoenix Force miniseries continues with another original story about a very special team of navy SEALs who possess paranormal abilities. In the second book, numerous Mages have opposing views on what action needs to be taken against threats to their kind. Now two individuals must risk their futures and possibility their lives in order to keep the situation from claiming innocents. The gifted Bonnie Vanak has constructed an intriguingly believable world for her supernatural beings, and PHANTOM WOLF is packed with hidden dangers throughout.

When Sam Shaymore and Kelly Denning were much younger, they thought their feelings were more important than what society dictated for their Mage classes. His Elemental Mage status meant he was seen as powerful while those who had Arcane standing like her had very few rights, but they were not going to let their hearts be ruled by these guidelines. Sadly, an unthinkable event was too much for their relationship to withstand and they parted ways.

Both have put their whole lives into their careers and not let anyone get close again. Sam is a navy SEAL on the Phoenix Force team, where his shape-shifting capability plus other talents often comes in handy. Kelly continuously tries to help Mage children, and hearing about the kidnapping of several has her going to rescue them. When her plan does not going according to her wishes, she comes to realize Sam is the only one who can help her. However, he and his teammates have been sent to Honduras to bring her back for not doing as commanded. Kelly tries to make Sam understand the allegations she has made are true, yet much in his life could be lost if he decides to assist her.

Stories where lovers are reunited are some of my favorites, and the emotional ties between Sam and Kelly are some of the strongest I have read. The incident that destroyed their relationship would be difficult for anyone to overcome, and so many of their conversations in the present have a connection to their past. The many disagreements they have over the differences in their classes are often conveyed with extremely earnest feelings, and I certainly felt the serious intensity of each word. The author makes it very clear as to how the perception of someone can cloud the judgment of another person, even when no personal knowledge is actually known. Bonnie Vanak has a knack for creating likable characters, and this couple touched me on so many levels at different times during the story. They made me feel the sadness over what happened in their lives, and some of these moments are especially poignant. When they shed a tear, I wanted to right along with them. There are also several light-hearted scenes, and the one where there is a reversing of roles really had me chuckling because of what they experienced. Both of them are very determined and stubborn, and I liked how Kelly never gave in regardless of the circumstances she had to face. She is a gutsy woman with commendable values, and her responses to each new incident had me enjoying her character even more. When she and Sam interact, I came to know him much better, too, and discovered just how much he keeps hidden from others. While they try to make themselves believe the emotional ties between them were severed while apart, it along with their sexual desire is just as strong as in the past. The eagerness they express when sexually intimate is off the scale, and just proves how much they still care. Some twists in the story are unanticipated and took me completely by surprise, proving Bonnie Vanak is skillfully clever. PHANTOM WOLF is constantly entertaining and remarkably fascinating. With so many hunky Phoenix Force team members, there will hopefully be quite a few more books in this enthralling series.

A Question of Honor: A Bess Crawford Mystery (Bess Crawford Mysteries Book 5), by Charles Todd

In the latest mystery from New York Times bestselling author Charles Todd, World War I nurse and amateur sleuth Bess Crawford investigates an old murder that occurred during her childhood in India, a search for the truth that will transform her and leave her pondering a troubling question: How can facts lie?

Bess Crawford enjoyed a wondrous childhood in India, where her father, a colonel in the British Army, was stationed on the Northwest Frontier. But an unforgettable incident darkened that happy time. In 1908, Colonel Crawford's regiment discovered that it had a murderer in its ranks, an officer who killed five people in India and England yet was never brought to trial. In the eyes of many of these soldiers, men defined by honor and duty, the crime was a stain on the regiment's reputation and on the good name of Bess's father, the Colonel Sahib, who had trained the killer.

A decade later, tending to the wounded on the battlefields of France during World War I, Bess learns from a dying Indian sergeant that the supposed murderer, Lieutenant Wade, is alive—and serving at the Front. Bess cannot believe the shocking news. According to reliable reports, Wade's body had been seen deep in the Khyber Pass, where he had died trying to reach Afghanistan. Soon, though, her mind is racing. How had he escaped from India? What had driven a good man to murder in cold blood?

Wanting answers, she uses her leave to investigate. In the village where the first three killings took place, she discovers that the locals are certain that the British soldier was innocent. Yet the present owner of the house where the crime was committed believes otherwise, and is convinced that Bess's father helped Wade flee. To settle the matter once and for all, Bess sets out to find Wade and let the courts decide.

But when she stumbles on the horrific truth, something that even the famous writer Rudyard Kipling had kept secret all his life, she is shaken to her very core. The facts will damn Wade even as they reveal a brutal reality, a reality that could have been her own fate.

Amazon.com Review
Author One-on-One: Charles Todd and Deborah Crombie

Deborah Crombie is the bestselling author of 15 mystery novels featuring Scotland Yard Detective Inspector James, and Detective Superintendent Kincaid, including her latest, The Sound of Broken Glass.

Deborah Crombie: Even though this is the fifth book in the "Bess Crawford" mystery series, it reads like a stand-alone novel. What's your trick to writing a series novel that can be enjoyed by a newcomer as well as a fan?

Charles Todd: We try to put ourselves in the readers’ shoes, so that he or she can start the series anywhere, and still feel right at home. That means concentrating on the current plot and setting, to make it as exciting as if it were the first time Bess ever tried to solve a mystery. That keeps the character fresh too, because our enthusiasm for Bess comes through.

DC: There is a wonderful subtext to the relationship between Bess, the WWI battlefield nurse, and Simon, her father's right-hand man in the military. What's really going on there?

CT: Simon and Bess haven’t told us yet. There’s most certainly chemistry there, a lot of it. Perhaps it hasn’t dawned on them yet that there might be something more between them. Still, every once in a while, a twinge of jealousy crops up…

DC: The scenes of the British Army in India during the Colonial era (which form the background for the current story) are so colorful and fascinating, not the usual stuff of a mystery series. What inspired you to give Bess and her family a history in India?

CT: India made Bess such an intriguing character to work with. We didn’t want her to be a staid Victorian. Instead she experiences Army life and understands duty. Her education includes a different, exotic culture. And the memory of the 1857 Indian Mutiny is always fresh, a constant reminder of danger. If you’re going to write about a woman who can stand on her own two feet, there has to be an explanation of how she learned to be so independent. A traditional background wouldn’t have worked.

DC: Will Bess ever meet up with Inspector Rutledge, the protagonist of your other mystery series?

CT: So far, we haven’t come up with any good reason for letting them meet. But there is one character who is in both series—Melinda Crawford. She’s a cousin of Bess’s family and has an Army background in India herself. She’s also a close friend of Rutledge’s family. Who knows if she’ll ever introduce these two? And what will Simon have to say to that?

DC: Bess is such a wonderful character, she feels so contemporary while still being true to her time. She has a real talent of drawing information out of others. What--or who--was your inspiration for Bess?

CT: The familiar Victorian woman, repressed and living under the thumb of her father and then her husband, is only one side of the picture. Intrepid Englishwomen traveled the world as missionaries or like Melinda Crawford, for adventure. Even the Suffragettes were ready to endure prison for their cause. The nurses who served in France, saving lives, were remarkable for their courage and devotion to duty. These are the real-life women who inspired Bess, women on the threshold of our time but still a very real part of their own.

From Booklist
A battlefield nurse familiar with the horrors of trench warfare, Sister Bess Crawford is tirelessly competent, stubborn, and endlessly in motion, though perpetually exhausted. Lieutenant Wade, previously with Bess father’s regiment, reputedly killed five civilians in India and two in England and was presumed killed while attempting to flee. Wade was therefore never brought to justice, casting a pall over regimental honor. Now, years later, Bess bumps into him on the battlefield before he disappears again, and in her moral indignation she sets off in search of an explanation. While on leave, Bess takes shameless advantage of her friend Simon, forcing him to drive her around as she vets shifty and suspicious characters connected to Wade’s childhood and leaves a trail of deadly consequences in her wake. Despite this flitting about, suspense is lacking in this heavily interpretive fifth installment in the series, though series fans will enjoy another adventure of the intrepid and endlessly curious Bess—a heroine whose intuition rivals tht of Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs but whose spunk doesn’t quite match that of Anne Perry’s Hester Latterly. --Jen Baker

Best one yet in the series
By Carol S.
For several books, we've learned about Bess Crawford, a colonel's daughter working as a nurse just behind the front lines of WWI. An integral part of Bess's background is her childhood in India; her father was a colonel stationed there and we have heard through the various series in the book how living in India--and how being a respected colonel's daughter--shaped Bess. "A Question of Honor" begins with a prologue harkening back to that time in India. Bess is a presumably a young teenager and she and her family are shocked to hear of the sudden death of a fellow military family's daughter. The daughter was left in England in the care of a sort of foster family, which apparently was a common thing at this time for fear of the many dangers (disease and civil unrest at the top of the list) that living in India presented to a military man's family. We see how deeply this child's death affects Bess's family, and several others stationed with her, including some of the men in her father's regiment. Shortly afterward, one of her father's men is accused of several vicious murders. This cast a long shadow over Bess's father, making him, as leader of his regiment, look bad and troubling all those who had known this Lt. Wade. No one could have predicted he was a murderer; when Wade escapes military custody, there is no trial to bring the facts to light.

Fast forward to 1918. Bess is still working at the front, trying to save soldiers' lives with her nursing skills. A dying patient confides in Bess that he has seen Wade, that he is alive. Bess has always been troubled by the conflict between the Lt. Wade she knew and the one who supposedly killed several people, and so she begins digging around a bit to see if she can learn more. She becomes enmeshed in trying to determine exactly what happened ten years ago, including whether Wade committed the murders of which he is accused and whether he is in fact alive or whether he died in the Middle East ten years ago. The result is one of her most challenging mysteries yet.

I first became a fan of Charles Todd by reading the Ian Rutledge series of mysteries, which are set in the years immediately following WWI and feature a former military man who now works for the police but who is still plagued by what is essentially post-traumatic stress syndrome. The Bess Crawford series has never been as good; partly because the books seem a bit shorter and deliberately lighter in tone, but also because the plots haven't been as complex or rich. Compared to a Rutledge novel, "A Question of Honor" still feels a bit lightweight. However, the mystery is fleshed out better and the fact that the crimes are based in the past makes it a bit more credible that a nurse actively serving at the front could untangle it. The Bess Crawford series will always suffer to some extent from that credibility gap: she isn't a police officer or detective, and she has a grueling and soul-crushing job as battlefield nurse, so just how is she able to (a) encounter all these murder mysteries, and (b) have the time or energy to gallivant back and forth and investigate them, but I found myself able to overlook the credibility gap by getting involved in the storyline. Overall, I enjoyed reading the book as a lighter alternative to the Rutledge series (in the sense of a less introspective heroine, more reliance on coincidence to move the plot along) that doesn't skimp on the historical background.

Where can I even begin?
By Too Old For This
Where can I even begin?
1. This was a slow slog from the get-go. It took several weeks to finish, when I'd normally be done in a day or two.
2. The characters are flat and underdeveloped.
3. Some scenes and characters (e.g. Simon and his cottage) are an obvious rip off from Jacqueline Winspear's work.
4. The writing is choppy, like a high-schooler trying his/her hand at a first book. The sentences are short and the dialogue is uninventive. Note the frequent (and maddening use) of "she grinned", "he grinned", "they grinned."
5. The authors are so unfamiliar with England, that they have decided that swishing out a teapot with boiling water before making tea is for cleaning out the pot. Do they really think Brits don't wash up the tea dishes, pot included? Swishing the tea pot for boiling water is for warming the pot, so that the end product—a good cuppa—is nice and hot. If an occasional used tea leaf is dislodged in the swishing process, so be it.
6. The authors are under the impression that "putting up food in jars" is a World-War-One Britishism. This concept even turns up as a repeat motif in the book. Er, NO: it is a very American expression from at least as far back as the Depression. In England, the term "bottling" is used, for instance, in preserving gooseberries.
7. The authors have assumed that it is easy to drive hither and yon in England and that it always has been. One moment Bess Crawford is in Kent, the next in Somerset, the next up in London. Then there are trips to Dover, apparently at the drop of a pin. Have the authors even tried those drives under current conditions on the motorways? Have they even tried getting from Point A to Point B, from one county to the next now? They are evidently out of touch with what English driving conditions were like in the first half of the 20th century, let alone the 1920's.
8. While Bess Crawford and Simon are magically zooming all over the countryside, they also manage to spirit themselves over to France (and back) on the ferries/boats without it being an all-day event between Calais and London. Some travel would be in order for Charles Todd, and not in the modern-day hydrofoils.
9. Although the authors did not drift into the every-page American modernisms that infect their previous novels, a "Question of Honor" still has those aplenty.
For the amount this book costs, I think the authors could spend a lot more care in developing the writing beyond a "draft", researching material on-site, by consulting "old timers", and finding an editor who is familiar with England.
For a much more genuine series featuring a young woman detective in post-World-War-One England and far more careful editing, I recommend the work of Carola Dunn.

A Better Bess
By Bella Rosa
This fifth installment in the Bess Crawford series begins with a prologue set during Bess' teenage years in India, when one of her father's trusted officers is accused of five gruesome murders. The man flees into the Khyber Pass and is assumed to have died. Chapter one picks up ten years later, when a dying man tells Bess he's seen the officer, Lieutenant Wade, alive and serving in the nearby trenches. Within a few days Bess has glimpsed Wade herself, bringing back all the old confusion about his guilt or innocence. In true Bess fashion, she decides to investigate.

Bess is still asking busybody questions of complete strangers, but at least this time around several people find that annoying and one gets downright hostile, so that was refreshing. Bess' connection to this mystery is more personal than usual as well - Lt. Wade's alleged crimes smeared the reputation of her father and his regiment, so getting to the truth is as much about vindicating her father as it is her natural nosiness. Thankfully, there are none of the off-stage machinations from Simon and Colonel Sahib that pushed the plot in the last book, and while there's still no way for the reader to guess the culprit before the end, that works with the structure of this story.

Overall, this was the most satisfying entry in this series since the first. I'm glad I decided to ignore the fact that I'd sworn off this series and grabbed this one for review.

What kid doesn’t want a pony party? Well, it looks like Tina, the birthday girl, isn’t so thrilled when—surprise!—two ponies arrive at her bash. Annie, Meg, and Jill, or the “Pony Scouts,” are assisting Jill’s mom with Tina’s party, helping kids to mount Inky and Splash and leading the rides. It takes Annie’s admission that she, too, was afraid of riding at first to bolster Tina’s confidence. This level 2 I Can Read!, the ninth title in the Pony Scouts series, once again offers a high-interest topic, which, coupled with plenty of white space, large-print text, and a watercolor illustration on each page, makes for beginning-reader magic. Grades K-2. --Ann Kelley

Pony Scouts: Pony Party
By BabyMo
One of my five year old twins discovered the Pony Scouts series at the library. Since then, we have borrowed many of the Pony Scouts books. This series of easy reader books was written by Catherine Hapka and illustrated by Anne Kennedy.

The Pony Scouts is a club made up of three girls. Jill seems to be the leader of the group by default because she lives on a farm with the ponies. Meg and Annie are her friends who love everything to do with ponies.

The Pony Party has the girls accompanying Jill’s mother to a younger child’s birthday party. Jill’s mother has brought the ponies so that the guests can have pony rides. The girls notice that the birthday girl is reluctant to go for a pony ride. Meg tries to talk to Tina, the birthday girl, and decides that the birthday girl is a snob who thinks she is too good to ride ponies. Annie takes a gentler approach and determines that the birthday girl is afraid to ride a pony. Annie reassures her, and the girl has a wonderful time.

I was definitely taken aback by Meg’s attitude. She has demonstrated that she can be impulsive in other pony stories, but she was outright rude in The Pony Party. She was directly rude to the birthday girl. Tina says that she is afraid of getting her shoes dirty, which is CLEARLY an excuse, and Meg tells her, “WHATEVER!” and walks away. She tells her friends that she thinks Tina is a snob.

Annie’s kindness demonstrates that we should never make assumptions about someone’s situation, and that kindness and compassion are ideal qualities to have. It would have been nice if the story pointed out that Meg’s behavior was rude. The implication is a little too subtle

I would still recommend Pony Party, but Meg’s rude behavior was definitely off-putting and this is not one of our favorite books in the series. This book is written at a second grade reading level, and will appeal to children from kindergarten to second grade.
