Outfoxed, by Mike Twohy

Quack, quack—woof? A quick-thinking duck keeps a fox on his toes in this witty romp from a New Yorker cartoonist.

One dark night in the henhouse, a hungry fox in search of his dinner gets more than he bargains for. Instead of a chicken, Fox grabs a duck. A very smart duck. A duck so sly, he plans to convince Fox that he isn’t a duck but a—dog! Yes, a dog.

This clever story and its accompanying visual narrative will delight readers young and old—because if it looks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, it HAS to be a duck…right?

K-Gr 2–If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…but wait, this white-feathered yellow-billed bird is barking like a dog, slobbering like a dog, chewing up socks like a dog. What gives? That's what Fox wants to know after he inadvertently grabs a duck out of the henhouse intent on enjoying a chicken dinner. But maybe a duck will do? Clever duck manages to avoid the cookpot by declaring, “You are mistaken, sir. I am NOT a DUCK!” and adopting a variety of classic doggy behaviors such as wagging her tail and peeing on the carpet. Finally, Fox relents and takes the “dog” back to the farm where she belongs, only to find a surprise in the house that blows the lid off the whole ruse. The hilarious illustrations sketched with marker and colored pencil are designed like large comic book panels and have a real slapstick appeal that is perfectly suited to the comedic text. Review
Cartoonist Twohy delivers lackluster laughs in this tale of a clever duck and not-too-bright fox.

The story opens with confusingly scriptlike narration (without the benefit of a stage/screen setup) as a cloaked fox breaks into a chicken coop. Without looking, Fox grabs a hen and runs (strangely, on all fours, despite wearing a trench coat and sneakers on his find feet). Readers may be confused as to why Fox is on the run, but a page turn reveals the guard dogs on his tail. The thick-lined, comic book–esque illustrations depict Fox making a narrow escape and arriving home to discover he mistakenly bagged a duck. But Duck is not resigned to be dinner and goes about attempting to convince Fox that she is a dog in a protracted pantomime. Unsure, Fox tries to trick Duck into revealing her true nature and fails, returning Duck to her home the following day. Just as Fox returns to his den and begins to regret having given up a potential pet, he discovers his mistake. While this book may elicit laughs, the choppy pacing, grammatical shortcuts and confusing lack of direction as to what should be read first on a given page (the narration or the speech/thought bubbles?) will make for difficult read-alouds.

A conniving fox breaks into a henhouse one night and makes off with what he
thinks is a chicken. When he arrives home, he discovers that the bird he stuffed into
his coat pocket is actually a duck—or is it? The clever duck pretends to be a dog,
carrying his ruse to elaborate lengths, from barking and wagging his tail (well, his
tailfeathers) to chewing up the fox’s clothes and peeing on the carpet. The puzzled
fox is bamboozled by this behavior and returns the duck/dog to the farm, explaining
that “foxes don’t eat dogs and foxes don’t have pets.” After returning home, the fox
wonders if maybe he should have kept the little guy after all—until he spots the
egg that the “dog” left behind and realizes he’s been played. The story unfolds in
panel sequences like a comic, with in-image dialogue the only words, and Twohy
adeptly uses that format to successfully convey both the humor and the drama of
this interlude between fox and duck. The narration of the text is peppered with
asides in speech balloons from the duck and the fox, and the duck’s formal address
of the fox (“You are mistaken, sir. I am NOT a DUCK!”) also adds to the humor.
The duck’s doglike behavior (especially the peeing on the carpet) will cause giggles,
and kids will enjoy being in on the duck’s deception. The lively illustrations, rendered
in marker and colored pencil, have a casual but controlled line, and the clear
compositions and expressive figures make the action easy to follow. The mostly
accessible vocabulary and brevity of the text will put this within reach of many
primary grade readers and the comic-like format may appeal to reluctant readers.
This would be a “quacker-jack” addition to a duck- or fox-themed storytime, or
an interesting title to contrast with Beatrix Potter’s lengthier The Tale of Jemima
Puddle-Duck. JH (Bulletin)

Fox faces a dilemma after a late-night chicken heist. He had broken into the henhouse under the cover of darkness; back in his brightly lit den, he’s surprised to find that he’s nabbed a duck by mistake. The problem? The duck claims to be a dog, sniffing and slobbering and wagging with puppy-like enthusiasm. Fox is skeptical. Duck, however, is very convincing, and by the time Duck “runs into [the] living room and pees on [the] carpet,” Fox gives up for the night: “I might still have you for breakfast.” Duck’s bold scheme (and Fox’s credulity) will thrill young readers, even those who’ve previously encountered the old dinner-tricks-predator-and-gets-away premise. Cartoonist Twohy knows how to wield a black line; his comical illustrations are integral to the storytelling, conveying tone and helping to advance the story. The straight-faced narrator’s commentary—“in the morning Fox wakes up to hot duck breath and a wet face”—manages to play up the farce while letting Duck’s shenanigans speak for themselves. Fox is howling mad to discover he’s been hoodwinked, but storytime audiences will howl with laughter when Fox finds what the “little doggie” left behind. The yolk’s on Fox, but at least he can have the egg for dinner. kitty flynn

Great Story (and gift) For Parents (and grandparents) Of Young Children
By Bethesda Bibliophile
Twohy, a cartoonist for The New Yorker, uses his gifts for drawing and humor to tell the story of a duck who tries to be more sly than the fox who grabs him from a dark chicken coop in the dead of night. Our children (now grown) bought the book for friends with small children and we have seen the photos of kids entranced by Twohy's colorful drawings as a parent (or grandparent) reads the amusing story of how a duck seeks to avoid becoming a fox's dinner. One clue is lots of chewed up socks and underwear. The story is clever enough for adult readers to appreciate and embellish on for young children, who will not only follow closely the colorful and entertaining drawings, but will also be caught up by the story, i.e., will the duck outfox the fox? Based on the warm reception our children's gifts of the book produced, we now give it to new grandparents.

A resourceful and daring duck
By Kate Fenton
Outrageously silly and hilarious. Mike Twohy has a gift for drawing animals with lots of personality. Can hardly wait for my great niece to see it; I know she will get a huge kick out of the story and lively drawings, though she is a few years older than when "Poindexter" came out.

Sly duck
By Patrick Mich Joseph
If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it's a duck. But what if it barks? That's the question for fox to figure out in this great new book by New Yorker cartoonist Mike Twohy. My kids (9 and 6) love it, especially the surprise ending! Four little thumbs way up!

Hot Mineral Springs, Colorado
1888

"What do you mean, I can't?" Abby Bowen fought to keep from slamming her hands on her hips and glaring down at the rotund man seated in front of her.

"I'm sorry, miss," the mayor and head chairman of Hot Mineral Springs, Mr. Prinker, said as his cheeks flushed.

"Why didn't you tell me this before I bought the place?" She clenched her teeth as hot anger boiled inside her. There was no excuse for this. None whatsoever.

"We didn't know what your intentions were for the building. We assumed you wanted to open a dress shop or a restaurant or even a luxurious mineral spa for women. We already have one for men, you know." He grabbed the lapels of his jacket and puffed out his chest like a zealous rooster who was full of himself. "Any one of those would have been allowed. However, we—" he glanced around the large rectangle table at each of the seven town committee members "—cannot allow a single woman to open a theater. Why, something of that nature would be quite scandalous and ruin our town's fine upstanding reputation. Not to say your own, young lady." He shook his forefinger at her.

Abby wanted to latch onto his meaty finger and shove it up his bulbous red nose. But that attitude would get her nowhere, much less please the Lord. She quelled her anger as she searched for another option. Why some townspeople thought women who ran a theater were of questionable repute, she didn't understand. In other towns, people did it all the time, and it was not considered a scandal.

"It's too bad that your name is not Mr. Bowen," Mr. Prinker said as if in deep thought. "For if it was, we might consider your proposal. However, as it stands, we will have to refuse the license required by our town to open such an establishment."

Such an establishment? What did that mean? Whatever it meant, she didn't care. She just wanted to make sure she understood him correctly. "Let me see if I get this straight. Are you saying if I was a man, I would be able to obtain this license?"

"In a manner of speaking, that's precisely what I'm saying. However—" he rubbed his double chin for the longest moment of her life "—there is one other alternative."

"And what, pray tell, is that?" Abby didn't even try to keep the sarcasm from her voice. She'd about had enough of these men and their preposterous accusations.

"If you were to take on a male business partner, a gentleman with an outstanding reputation, then we would consider allowing you to open your theater. Isn't that right, gentlemen?"

They all nodded their heads.

What?! Surely these buffoons weren't serious. Were they? Abby gazed at each man to see if they indeed were. Their stoic faces confirmed her assessment. She shook her head at the utterly and completely outlandish idea. "So you're saying, if I obtain a male—" she emphasized the word male with abhorrence "—business partner, then you will allow me to open my theater? Correct?"

"Yes, ma'am. We feel it's the only proper way. I am certain, ma'am, that you will find there are many upstanding men in our community who would be more than willing to help you with your business adventure. Including any one of us here in this room." The mayor's horse teeth overtook his supercilious grin.

Oh, how she wanted to reach over and whip that arrogant smirk right off his thin lips. Humpft. As if she needed their help running a business. There wasn't one person in this room with whom she'd ever consider doing business with. They all looked shiftier and greedier than a gang of bank robbers.

"Excuse me a moment, gentlemen." She all but choked on that last word. These men were no gentlemen.

"Of course." Mr. Prinker's smile couldn't get any phonier than it was right now.

Abby stepped outside the room and slipped around the corner so she could be alone a few minutes. She paced up and down the sparkling-clean hallway, wringing her gloved hands. With each step she took on the polished hardwood floor, her button-up shoes echoed, her pink silk bustle gown swished and the pink plume on her hat danced.

She couldn't believe this whole ludicrous thing was even happening. After spending the last year and a half going to plays and even participating in a few, she knew what she wanted to do with her life. That desire had only escalated when her ex-fiance, David Blakely, had broken their engagement—the very day she had told him she could never bear children. After that, every time she'd seen him with his wife, the woman he had married two weeks after he had ended their engagement almost one year ago, and their newborn son, the dagger of rejection plunged deeper into her heart. That's when she had plotted her escape from the Idaho Territory. Eventually, as she worked on her new life, the pain had gone away, and her focus turned completely to fulfilling her dream, a dream that was about to die before it even got started. All because of a room full of portentous, dishonest, stodgy old men.

And if she were honest with herself, her own stupidity, as well.

Why hadn't she listened to her brothers? Haydon, Michael and Jess had warned her about buying a building without seeing it first. But no, she had assured them the ad stated the mansion at the edge of town was previously owned by a prominent family, so therefore, it had to have been well taken care of. They weren't convinced. But she refused to let that stop her. Her stubborn exuberant way took charge as did her dream of life outside the confines of her family. Thus, she let them know she had prayed about the whole thing and was confident in her decision to go ahead with her plans.

The theater was third in her line of dreams, but it was all she had left to dream about. So using the money her father had left her, money he had intended for her and her siblings to use to fulfill their dreams, she'd gone ahead and purchased the place sight unseen. What a mistake that turned out to be.

The very day she arrived in Hot Mineral Springs, Colorado, she quickly discovered her brothers had been right. No maintenance had been done on the home since the owner had moved back east years ago. Because of the mansion's abandoned condition, there was no way for her to sell the place and get her money back so that she could move somewhere else. Someplace where she would be allowed to open up her business.

Abby stopped pacing. For a brief moment she closed her eyes and sighed. No, like it or not, she was stuck with the place.

She flicked her thumbnail with her teeth as she tried to come up with a plan, but nothing came to mind.

Oh, if only she could have opened her dinner theater back home in Paradise Haven, but she couldn't. They already had one, and the town wasn't big enough for two. Not only that, she had to move away.

She just had to.

Being at home constantly reminded her of the two things she wanted most out of life but could never have—children of her own and the love of her life, David. What she needed to do now was to expunge the past and its painful memories. She'd start now by forcing her mind to take a turn in another direction, to figure out a way to make her business adventure work. Operating a theater would not only keep her busy, but it would give her life meaning. Something she desperately needed.

With a new resolve, Abby determined it would be a hot day in a shed full of ice before she would allow anyone to throw away her opportunity for happiness and fulfillment. No one, not even these men, would steal those things from her. There had to be a way to fulfill her dream.

There just had to.

It was in the next moment Abby remembered that it was God who had led her here. And it would be God who would solve the obstacles before her. She sent up a quick prayer for wisdom, and within seconds a plan formulated in her mind. It was a drastic one, but it just might work. Knowing it would be strictly for business purposes, she would place an advertisement for a business partner. A male one. She rolled her eyes at that one. But she'd do it. That would fix these pompous men's wagons fine enough.

Satisfied and feeling somewhat pleased with her scheme, she headed back into the boardroom. Abby put on her best acting face and eyed each man with a sweet smile. "Gentlemen, I've decided to do what you have asked. I will take on a gentleman business partner."

Their faces lit up and greed ravished their eager eyes.

"But—" she held up her hand "—it won't be with anyone here. Good day, sirs." With those words, she whirled on her heels and breezed out of the conference room, leaving each man with his mouth hanging wide open.

Now all she needed to do was make haste and find a gentleman who would be willing to become her partner. Was there such a man? One who would agree to the terms she'd already started formulating in her mind?

Outside, the light breeze brought with it the smell of sulfur from the hot mineral springs. She'd been here two months now and she still hadn't gotten used to the rotten-egg odor. To think that people actually bathed in that smelly water made her shudder. How revolting.

She'd been amazed to learn that Indians believed the waters to be sacred. That they relaxed in the natural hot mineral pools here, believing it healed their minds, bodies and souls.

To think that the mayor actually thought she would want to open a women's spa utilizing that water. Did women actually bathe in that stinky stuff, too? She wrinkled her nose, then hiked a shoulder. If they indeed did, she might have to consider opening a spa. Something she would have to discuss with her business partner. Or would she? Could she do one on her own and the other with him? Whoever he was.

The very idea of having a partner, someone who would have a say in how things were run, was about as pleasant as the thought of a million spiders crawling all over her. Over the past two years, she planned exactly how she wanted to run her dinner theater. What it would be like. What meals would be served. What plays would be staged. What furniture and place settings she would use. All of it. Down to the very last detail. Would her new business partner, if she found one, try to change those plans? What was she thinking? She shook her head at her own silliness. Of course he wouldn't. She wouldn't let him.

Maybe the man would agree to split the business 60/40. That way she would have controlling interest of how things were run. Mr. Barker, her new stepfather back in Paradise Haven, whose business-savvy mind she'd questioned almost daily over the past year and a half all the way up until the day of her departure, had taught her that. But.. She sighed. Where would she find such a man who would be willing to do that? She didn't know, but God did. Her lips curled upward with the knowledge that God was in control and that He would work it all out.

Abby gazed up at the clear, blue sky and sent up her prayer request. When she finished, she thanked God for the answer. After all, that's what living by faith was all about. Trusting Him for the answer before it ever came. Two scriptures popped into her mind. Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. And Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Confident she had done that very thing, her attention slid downward toward the tall mountains surrounding the eighty-five-hundred-feet-above-sea-level town. The high altitude had taken some time getting used to. At first, breathing the thin air had been difficult, and she had gotten a lot of headaches. Drinking more water seemed to help. Eventually, she had gotten used to the thinner air, and the headaches were gone. Because of that, she now loved living in these majestic mountains. Mountains unlike any she'd ever seen back home in Paradise Haven in the Idaho Territory.

Back there, the land was much different from here with its rolling hills, bunch grass, tall wheat and rich volcanic ash soil. Here there were large hay meadows, oodles and oodles of sagebrush and high mountains covered with aspen, blue spruce and ponderosa pine trees. Hidden in those breathtaking mountains were running brooks of crystal clear water, concealed waterfalls, wildflowers, caves, bears, mountain lions, bobcats, foxes, coyotes and lots of lots of deer and elk. Her favorite things in this remote mountain town were the hummingbirds, the tiny striped ground squirrels and the itty-bitty chipmunks. Each brightened her day with their cute antics.

The desire to stay in this beautiful town snuggled cozily into her. Only one way to make that happen, though. She'd better get to it. And now. Anxious to get home so she could word her advertisement carefully, and post it as soon as possible, she picked up her pace, sending up yet another prayer. "God, send me the right man. And make it quick."

Harrison Kingsley sat at his deceased father's massive mahogany desk and re-read Abigail Bowen's advertisement for the fifteenth time.

Wanted: Business Partner.

Prosperous business opportunity for the right gentleman. Guaranteed full return on investment within three months, including interest. If interested, please contact newspaper for more information.

At first he'd thought the ad had been some kind of prank, but his gut told him it wasn't. Years ago, he'd learned to follow his gut instincts and to trust in them, so three weeks ago he had contacted the paper. They informed him all correspondences would be made through them.

Within a week of responding to the advertisement, he'd received his first reply and was shocked to discover the advertisement had been written by a woman, a woman who had asked many questions about his life. Such as, how old he was, what he did for a living, where he was from, why he was interested in becoming a business partner and many more. Harrison answered each one honestly, and even asked some of his own. The hardest one to answer was, "Why are you willing to invest?"

Need. That's why. He glanced at the legal paper lying on his desk mere inches from his fingers. With a heavy sigh, he picked up his father's will and re-read the final stipulation, the very one he had memorized by now.

Notwithstanding anything contained herein, in order for my son, Harrison James Kingsley, to receive his full inheritance as set forth above, he must first prove that he is capable of operating my businesses. As proof of such capability, Harrison must start his own business, which business may be in any manner of industry or trade but which (a) must be located in a community other than Boston and specifically in a community in which he is unknown to the other residents, and (b) must show a profit of at least 1,000 dollars before his twenty-fifth birthday. If he fails to satisfy the foregoing requirements on or before his twenty-fifth birthday, all my assets will be divided equally between the following charities…

Anger bubbled up inside Harrison as it did every time he read that section of his father's will. He tossed the paper onto the desk, pinched his eyes shut and pressed the bridge of his nose with his fingertips and thumb. How could his father do this to him? Give him so little time to accomplish this? Did his father really hate him that much? Or was he still punishing him for the death of his mother? Harrison didn't know. But what he did know was that his father still controlled him, even from the grave.

Fabulous Story of Love and Faith
By The eBook Investigator
Abby Bowen's fiancee left her heart broken and she forges forward with her dream of opening a dinner theater in Colorado. Problem is the town council won't approve her business license...because she is a woman. They demand she find a male business partner or she would never be approved. She is a strong woman as well as Christian and sets a wonderful example of turning everything over to the Lord.

Harrison Kingsley, a widower with twin, four-year-old sons, answers her ad for his own reasons. He doesn't believe in God anymore because he blames Him for taking his wife away and denying him his father's love. But, Abby impresses him with her strength and faith. He and his boys are falling in love with the beautiful Abby but Harrison must return to Boston to repair his name and make amends to all of the people his father cheated.

This is an amazing love story that I read in one sitting. I could not put it down. I highly recommend this read and I don't think you will be sorry. Well worth it!

Christian Historical Romance
By Wendy Sparkes
Abby Bowen is not impressed. Having her dream of marriage and children quashed, she has moved to Colorado to pursue the only other dream she has - opening a dinner theatre. But the mayor and the other committee members aren't sure of a woman leading such a business. They give her an ultimatum: Find a male business partner or they will not give her a license.

To Harrison Kingsley, Abby's advertisement seems perfect. He can help her achieve her dream, and also fulfil the terms of his father's will, which state he needs to open his own business.

Falling in love was not part of the plan!

A nice, faith filled historical romance from new-to-me author Debra Ullrick. I connected with Abby who has had such a huge dream taken away and is struggling with the consequences of that, and yet keeps moving forward, trusting God even though she doesn't understand why; I appreciated Harrison for his letting Abby take the lead in her dream, yet willing to be a supportive business partner and helping her where he could as well as his commitment to right the wrongs his father had done to his home community; and as for those twins, I enjoyed their exuberance and their loving hearts.

Abby siblings have their stories told in:
#1 The Unexpected Bride (Love Inspired Historical)
#2 The Unlikely Wife (Mills & Boon Love Inspired Historical)
#3 Groom Wanted (Love Inspired Historical)

I haven't read these 3, but didn't feel I was missing anything from Abby's story by not having read them.

A great book by a fantastic author
By T. Worthen
I really enjoy books written by Ms. Ullrick. This story has suspense, romance, faith, and humor rolled into a very great story. This author has a way with words that make you feel like you are actually watching the action instead of just reading it. You can picture the people, rooms and scenery that are described. This story has a strong leading lady and an impressive leading man with 2 normal children. These little boys like to get into trouble just like normal little boys. They aren't just a mention in the story but are actually part of the story.

I hope Ms. Ullrick continues to write stories like this and I will keep an eye out for future books.

If you like a story with a little bit of everything in it then this book would be a good book for you to read unless you are looking for crime and blood then don't bother.

História do Direito (Portuguese Edition), by Marcus Vinicius Ribeiro

Excellent book for a beginner home improver
By Howard Kay
I used this book as the guide for building floor to ceiling built in oak bookshelves. It was clear and the pictures helped a lot. I also used some of the techniques described in the beginning of the book which helped a lot.

A little out of date
By William Rice
I found this book dated. It seems like it was written in the late 80s, early 90s and just updated some language as they released a new edition. The long explanation on how to install Formica countertops and the window seat being two projects i just don't see people doing these days. However, I did find many good tips and tricks, good pictures that clearly show the point they are trying to get across and projects that gave good starting points make this book valuable regardless.
Just know this book is a series of projects, if they are not what you want to do you might not find it interesting.

A Radiant Sky (A Beautiful Dark), by Jocelyn Davies

Perfect for fans of Lauren Kate's Fallen series and Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush saga, this darkly romantic story that began with A Beautiful Dark and gathered intensity in A Fractured Light comes to a thrilling conclusion in A Radiant Sky.

Since the night of her seventeenth birthday, Skye has been torn between two opposites: light and dark, the Order and the Rebellion, Devin and Asher. But in a shocking decision, she chose neither. With the help of her friends, Skye now forges her own path, setting out to gather an uprising of Rogues. These half-angels may be the key to maintaining the balance. But completing the mission is more difficult—and dangerous—than she could have imagined. And it comes at a cost: her greatest love may now be a lethal enemy. Because it's not just the Order that sees her as a threat. The Rebellion does, too. Dark days lie ahead, and if Skye is to survive, she'll need to rely on her extraordinary powers and the strength of her will. Because she has a future—and a love—that's worth fighting for.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Faced with a choice between light and dark, the Order and the Rebellion, 17-year-old Skye, daughter of two fallen angels, chooses neither. Instead, she has decided that the only way to end the war between the two groups of angels is to forge a new path. This decision means giving up her boyfriend, Asher, whose loyalty lies with the Rebellion. It means being hunted by both factions, who will use all of their powers to either destroy her or control her Rogue powers for themselves. It means anyone who joins Skye-human, angel, or Rogue-is in danger. Skye's heart is broken and whispers in her mind tell her that she'll fail, but destiny can be rewritten and love could be the powerful force that wins the day. Davies packs a lot into this trilogy finale. Several new characters are introduced, old characters change loyalties, and secrets are finally revealed before the myriad threads come together in a satisfying ending. Readers who have enjoyed the earlier titles will devour this one and want more (the ending leaves that door open). Newcomers to the series can easily pick up A Radiant Sky as their introduction. Either way, this fast-paced, well-written novel should have no trouble attracting readers.—Heather Miller Cover, Homewood Public Library, AL

From Booklist
In the final title in Davies’ popular Beautiful Dark series, Skye has refused to align herself with either the Order or the Rebellion, choosing instead to create a third army, the Uprising, in an attempt to save the world. In doing so, she has severed her ties with Asher, the Rebel angel whom she loves and turned a suspicious eye on her Guardian angel friend, Deven. But her high-school friends vow loyalty to Skye and her ideals, in spite of the danger her friendship demands. This title introduces a delightful young person with budding powers much like Skye’s; follows the search for two Rogues who were friends of Skye’s parents; and features a love-smitten Aunt Jo. Once again, Davies has melded the mundane and the paranormal into an exciting story of good and evil, order and chaos, and love and loss—all in the span of Skye’s senior year. When the characters finally line up to fight to keep the balance of the heavens in check, it will signal the ultimate battle for love, peace, and normal high-school adolescence. Grades 8-11. --Frances Bradburn

At least the series looks good on my shelve
By Sofia Lazaridou
The end was AWFUL! The final battle was for most of its part underwhelming and two people died. And those two people could have been alive and living happily, but for some unexplained reason the author killed them and didn't bring them back. She could, especially with everything else that happened. You can't build a story that will make the reader like this character again, only to have him killed later.

The only reason I am not saying I want my money back is because the book is pretty and looks good on my shelve. The ending was one of the biggest disappointments and the way things ended seemed just as an excuse and an easy way to get away with the war we the author prepared us for. An epilogue was in need. I liked the ending sentence, but the story needed the epilogue. We didn't even see S key or anyone grieving for the loss of the person who died.

Skye for most of the book was pinning for Asher and he wasn't present. I wanted in the end to see Ian and Skye together. Asher should have been the one to die. Ian has been always there for Skye and was supporting her so he would have been an exquisite choice, but time and time again, I was told that Ian was never going to be something other than friend for Skye. Skye was focusing too much on Asher and that made her weak in my eyes. The day of the final battle she goes to search him!

Cassie and Dan were the cutest couple in this book and my faith. Earth (see what the author did here?) is a new character and was too easy to like her. I wish she was the main character instead of Skye. Skye couldn't put two and two together. Again! It makes me wonder how she wasn't killed. The story should have been a little more focused on the relationship between Aaron, aunt Jo and Earth.

The plot had many holes and I can say that the only taste I had in my mouth after the book ended was a disappointment. The author could have explored the story and given us a true battle. The last chapters were just a rushed way to rush a trilogy that I had been reading for the last three years. I gave my money for this book and I can say that I would not recommend this to anyone because the end is not something anyone should read.

Good for readers who enjoy angel/Nephilim sub-genres
By Sash & Em: A Tale of Two Bookies
Rating: 3.5 stars (I rounded up on GR because I loved the rest of the trilogy.)

The Scenery: I love that this is set in Telluride, Colorado. Just from reading the books and the beautiful imagery, I would jump at the chance to go visit. I am really hoping that Love the Bean is a real place…*sigh*

The Characters: I really adored Skye in this trilogy and there are a few other characters that really become endearing in this last book. However, there are also a few that you kind of want to throttle…I’ll leave that for you to decide.

The Plot: I could’ve called that from a mile away. Sorry, guys. I did enjoy a majority of the book…so many feels, so many twists and turns, but sadly they were a bit predictable.

The Love: Also, here a little predictable for YA…semi-love triangles. Girls love bad boys (Rebels, if you will), but Sky also has some love to go around for a Guardian. I think the love triangle needs to retire, y’all. I wanted to see a bit more depth in the character’s relationships. The deepest one I saw was between two who were fated to be together and Dan & Cassie!

The Bad Guys: …are everywhere…and everyone. There is a lot of back and forth here with dark and light, allies and enemies…former friends that are now enemies but still care about each other. Whew. A lot going on, am I right? Then there are the GENUINE bad dudes. The ones that are easy to hate and it makes you cringe every time they make an appearance.

The Good Guys: …seem to be a tiny group…or are they? Well, at least you get introduced to some REALLY awesome characters (some even younger than you might expect). Ready for the battle royale?

The Ending: We all knew we would end up here. The end. The battle to end all battles (supposedly). It has been brewing since the first book and now we have reached the culmination of all of Skye’s choices. I was actually caught off guard by how the book ended, and honestly…I don’t know how to feel about it. Let me know what y’all thought!

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to readers that enjoy the angel/Nephilim sub-genres and if you loved the first two books of the series. It was a really quick read for me and over all I enjoyed it.

Near perfect conclusion
By Britt R.
The Beautiful Dark series has been one of my favorite angel-centered young adult series and I'm sad to see it end. There was character growth, a great plot, two swoon worthy guys, and a main character who isn't perfect but doesn't let that get in her way. A Radiant Sky was a wonderful ending to this series, and even though it had a couple moments that were a little cheesy, I loved it.

Skye has grown up a lot in the past year. Since discovering she is the daughter of angels, one from the Order and the other from the Rebellion, she's had attempts on her life, on her friends' lives, and watched as people she cares about suffer. Instead of taking the easy way out by picking a side to fight for, she defies everyone and chooses to fight for herself, for her cause. She will not belong to either faction and allow herself to be controlled as a means to an end. Making this choice puts both sides against her and puts the lives of those around her at risk.

Skye has really come into her own power. She's embracing her powers, learning how to fight and control them. She's playing an active role now, making her decisions and not allowing them to be made for her. She's standing up to her fears and learning how to fight past them, even if she can't get rid of them. Her family and friends are what make her strong and she uses those bonds to motivate her. It was wonderful to read her becoming the woman she needed to be in order to fight for the world she loves.

Asher is a little absent in this novel, but I don't really mind. It forced Skye to realize who was important and worth fighting for. The moment they come back together is completely worth every moment of Asher being gone. Devin also plays an interesting role in this novel. The love triangle is gone, but that doesn't mean he isn't in Skye's life anymore. They come to an agreement about their relationship, one that they both can live with, and in the end it makes them both stronger.

There were only a couple moments that took me out of the novel. I'm all for personal reflection and realization, but there were times when it went past reflection and moved into nearly eye-roll inducing. It didn't happen enough to really hurt the book for me, but I could have done without them. There were also a few things that fell into place a little too perfectly; a little more challenge surrounding those moments would have been nice.

A Radiant Sky is a fantastic conclusion to a great series. It is the showdown between order and chaos, where the outcome isn't known until the very end. It kept me guessing and intrigued, wondering how things would unfold and what the losses would be. And when I finally reached those last words, everything felt right. It was the ending Skye earned.

A poignant, powerful fantasy by the author of The Dark Is Rising sequence. Ages 12-up.
Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review
From the author of The Dark Is Rising and its sequels; another fantasy powered by cryptic messages and high-sounding allusions. Cally's father is dying and her mother has gone to help him; Westerly, raised without a father, has just seen his mother killed. Cooper thrusts these two, who have never met, into an unnamed land where they travel, for unclear reasons, toward the sea despite an abundance of obstacles--a tower of dreams, a desert, a snowstorm--and the always abrupt, unsettling appearance of menacing Lady, Taranis. Though periodically helped by guides more familiar with this alien territory, essentially they struggle on their own, both with the assorted physical dangers and, as emphatically, with the emotional strains they seem to represent. "Your world is all change, all journeying, and nothing happens and no one that lives is ever lost," advises Snake. Lugan, another sometime speaker of truths, promises they will know "all the discoveries and lovely astonishments that go with the grief and the pain, in a land ruled by Death." Cooper has a real talent for creating mood, for building suspense from obscure dialogue and brief encounters, but the long, intentionally hooded beginning may confuse more readers than it attracts, and the outcome, despite inflected explanations, seems fitting but not quite fresh. (Kirkus Reviews, October 20, 1983)

I really liked the first half
By Maya Chhabra
I read this on the recommendation of the same friend as The Winter Prince, but this one wasn't as much of a success. I really liked the first half, with its mysterious urgency and perils, as we struggle, like Callie and West, to understand the rules of this new world and the reason for their journey. Everything through the mysterious castle was marvelous and all of a piece, but once we got to Callie and West's journey through the desert, the tension dropped, and the allegorical ending was a bit obvious for me. The gender roles sometimes rubbed me the wrong way, but the book and the characters seemed aware of the that.

The ending reminded me of a less brutal The Amber Spyglass (a book I love to bits) and I wonder if Seaward influenced that ending.

Moving seaward
By EA Solinas
Susan Cooper is best known for her epic "Dark is Rising Sequence," with all its Celtic legends and sense of mystery. But she tries a different tack in "Seaward," an atmospheric little story that is just a little darker, more complex, and full of symbols and hints.

West's mother was killed by some armed thugs, just as he escaped through a door into a strange land. Cally watched her parents waste away with a strange illness, before slipping through a mirror to the same land. When she encounters West, he's trying to escape from the ruthless, cold-hearted Lady Taranis.

A kindly stranger named Lugan seems to be their best hope for escaping Taranis. As the two travellers cross the world that is an echo of our own, they encounter strange creatures such as the selkies, a talking insect that guides them over a desert, creatures made of stone, and the haunting specters of their own pasts and destinies...

"Seaward" seems like a pretty simple story at first -- two kids travelling across a bleak land. But in that simple storyline Cooper tackles questions about death and life, about grief, loss, love, about good and evil and how sometimes you can't easily classify anyone.

Probably the biggest stumbling block in "Seaward" is the slightly dreamy tone of it all. Unlike Cooper's other books, there is no grounded "homey" base -- it's all like a legend right from the beginning. As a result, it takes awhile for the story to really get going, and there are long stretches where the characters are just walking.

Though the setting is another world, it has hints of Celtic myth. The mysterious Lugan and Taranis aren't fully identifiable until the ending, but they seem like characters out of a legend. And mythic creatures like selkies are linked to the characters, by virtue of the thickened skin on Cally's hands.

Cally and West are very richly drawn, confused and saddled with grief over their parents. It makes it all the more poignant as West overcomes his guilt, and Cally is tempted to find a new family. The only problem is that their romantic feelings seem to come out of left field.

After the mass appeal of the "Dark is Rising" books, Susan Cooper tackles a more oblique, fantastical approach in "Seaward." Deceptively simple, and richly evocative.

Haunting tale
By E. A Solinas
Susan Cooper is best known for her epic "Dark is Rising Sequence," but "Seaward" is not as well-known, while also drawing on the same Celtic legends. It's a little darker, a little differently-written, but a great read for people with enough patience.
Westerly's mother was killed by gunmen, and he escaped through a door into a strange land, with three magical bones. Calliope, a girl with strange thick skin on her hands, watches her parents waste away with a strange illness and leave her alone, and she slips through a mirror to the same land. When Cally encounters West, he is trying to escape from the ruthless, cold-hearted Lady Taranis.
A kindly stranger named Lugan seems to be their best hope for escaping Taranis. As the two travellers cross the world that is an echo of our own, they encounter strange creatures such as the sealpeople (selkies), a talking insect that guides them over a desert, creatures made of stone, and the haunting specters of their own pasts and destinies...
"Seaward" seems like a pretty simple story at first, but in that simple storyline Cooper tackles questions about death and life, about grief, about good and evil. Westerly's guilt over his mother's death and Cally's opportunity to be with the selkies are beautifully drawn. Her writing is dreamy, lush, but thankfully never becomes overwrought.
Cally and West are very alike, very confused and lacking in understanding, but drawn "seaward" and both dealing with grief. Taranis comes across as very childlike and petulant, while Lugan is paternal and kindly. There aren't many supporting characters, but the Stonecutter is pretty unnerving, and Peth is endearing and sad.
Probably the biggest stumbling block in "Seaward" is the slightly dreamy tone of it all. Unlike the "Dark is Rising" books, there is no grounded "homey" base -- it's all like a legend right from the beginning. As a result, it takes awhile for the story to really get going, and there are long stretches where the characters are just walking. There's no cursing or violence, although there is one scene where Cally and West experience some pretty strong physical attraction (though nothing happens). Their romance is a little abrupt as well, although hardly unexpected; in fact, it's pretty sweet.
"Seaward" is a fantastic story, with likeable characters and a deceptively simple storyline. Fans of Cooper and Celtic legends will eat this right up.
